I saw that DTV went to leasing and I'm thinking about adding a 3rd R10 to my home with no interest in getting HDTV for years. Can anyone here reccomend a place / deal to purchase one new or lovingly used with a card that doesn't have a balance on it?
Thanks!

There are many for sale on eBay. But some have cards, some don't. Buyer beware. Make sure you do your homework.
I read recently that weaknees was selling new R10's for $199. You might check their website, and/or solidsignal and/or ??? - any of several on-line dealers. Just make sure you are really buying, and not leasing, the unit.
You will also have to be very careful when you call D* to activate it. Make certain you get the access card department to annotate that it is an owned, and not leased, unit.

Weakness does indeed have R-10's for sale to exiting customers -

They also have some older Series 2 models for sale as well -

Stock up while you can :)

I don't know about all the stores but both the Compusa stores around me have a bunch of them.

Hey,
I am NEW to this whole thing (DVR-Tivo). I have spent the last couple of hrs reading post on this and another forum. I have a R15 on the way from D-TV, for *free, just the monthly fee. From what I have read the R15 may not be the best thing since sliced bread. Heads will roll if this thing does not record one of the better-half's American Idol or CSI episodes:mad:
I see you can buy the "old" R10's on eBay for a fair price.
(1) What kind of "homework" need to be done??
(2) Is it better to get one w/ or w/o a card??
(3) How do you go about activating the R10?? Can I just pull the card out of one of my activated receivers and be good to go??
Thanks.

Typical eBaying homework. Watch for what's included (remotes, cables, access card). Watch for those "sold as is" sales. With DVRs make sure you're not buying a unit that doesn't include a hard drive.

I've bought them with the cards. If you don't have spares and don't get one with the sale, you must buy one from DTV for $20 a pop. Has an effect on the total price your paying.

You will have to call DTV to activate the unit. Some have reported DTV will not activate a card on your account from another account. I have done this twice without any problem If you have your own card from another receiver all DTV has to do is marry that card to your new R10. No big deal.
However, all this I speak of was done before the lease program. Lord knows what you will run into from the CSR's now. If they don't want to activate a R10 as owned, say thanks, hang up and call again.
Also, check online retailers such as Weaknees. I've read recently they still had new R10's available.
EDI: Oh, look up to post #4 in this thread. That's where I read it. DUH!!!

WolffPack,
Thanks. I'll have to see if the R15 works as avertised, or I get the same troubles as other people on the board.

Hey,
Another "easy" question:
The OP asked "with a card that doesn't have a balance on it" What does this really mean?? What happens if you get a used one that has a " balance" on it??
I checked the FAQs to no avail.
Thanks again for the help.

They don't activate the card until the balance is paid in full.
