View Full Version : How do I switch to another tuner when a show is recording?

I've searched and searched on these forums, and I can't seem to figure out how to switch to my other tuner so that I can watch live tv on one tuner while I am recording a channel on another tuner. Since I record so many shows for my personal weekend viewing that my family does not want to watch during the week, this is of vital importance. I mean, I can't have my small kids watching CSI, but I want to have something to watch when they go to bed late at night.
I had one of the old Direct Tivos before, and they were the best. The only reason I got this R15 was because I needed more than 40 hours recording time.
Thanks,
Michelle

If you are recording on just one of the tuners, I have found that just putting the channel number in will get you to the channel you want. If you don't know the channel, then just use the guide or the mini guide (blue button) and then select the show you want.
As Davenap said, just punch in the channel number & hit select. Also, you can select the channel you want from the guide. Or, the previous button.

This was about the closest thing to my question but it wasn't answered, so I'm posting in this thread instead of creating a new one.
Last night, I was trying to run an experiment (I suspect that Tuner #1 is bad, affecting the closed captions) and I manually recorded House and attempted to watch a different show (on the second tuner) by entering a channel number and a message popped up asking me if I wanted to:
1) Continue recording the show but can't change channel
2) Stop recording, keep the recording and change channel
3) Stop recording, delete and change channel
I was stumped. I simply wanted to keep recording AND watch something else, isn't this possible with a manual recording? Or this works ONLY when the SL is set?
I have two cables hooked up to the R15 but I had unplugged it and used only one tuner when I was trying to test it on my other TV to confirm that it was NOT the TV incompatibility that DirecTV was trying to pass this problem off to. Is it possible that it "thinks" I have only one tuner and I need to run the set up again?
Thanks.

Either you have only one coax coming in from the satellite or somethings broken. It's usually totally invisible. As long at only ONE thing is being recorded (Hist List and look for the R) you can tune to any other channel anytime. Or if TWO shows are being recorded.. two R's in list.. THEN you should get that those choices to "continue recording" etc...

You shouldn't have to run setup again but it you turned it one with only one lead it won't look for the second again untill you do a reset/unplug it. I don't think your first tuner is bad or it wouldn't have started up and given a picture at all when you had one cable connected. Your second tuner could be bad. Make sure you have both cables connected and do a reset then see if you can record a show and change the channel.
I would probably run a system test to see if both tuners are working ok:
menu->setup->installation & test
I believe that's the chain that will get you there. You can run a test, and it'll tell you how your system is running (including both tuners).
BTW, as an aside, has anyone else noticed that the system test no longer gives you signal strength for you tuners? It used to do that. It doesn't anymore...
I have two cables hooked up to the R15 but I had unplugged
Make sure BOTH cables are attached and unplug it, wait 30 seconds and plug it back in.
That should fix it.

Thanks to all. I'll try those suggestions.
At least I know that it isn't supposed to happen that way. :)
