I know it was already deemed "offtopic", but there is one part of it that is relevant to this forum. Never again do I want to hear as an excuse for a missing or dysfunctional feature that "TiVo has a patent on it". :p

Since it still an NDS box will they won't be able to add Tivo functions right? They didn't buy Tivo they just extended the contract right? So there is no reason to believe that they would be able to put Tivo functions into the R15.

Part of it is that they agreed not to assert patents against each other.

What does that mean exactly? Does that me D* can use there patents and tivo can use thiers or just that Tivo won't sue during that 3 year period or saying that they will never sue?

Well, nobody is going to see the agreement, but the SEC filing has a bit more detailed language:
Further, we agreed that neither party would assert its patents against the other party with respect to each company’s products and services deployed prior to the expiration of the agreement, subject to limited exceptions.
Which to me means that (with limited exceptions), DirecTV can add whatever features they want to the R15 or other products up until 2/2010. So it's not "we're not going to sue until 2/2010", but instead "we're never going to sue for anything you do before 2/2010".

That's cool then. Hopefully we'll be able to get a better R15 out of the deal :D. Thanks for clearing that up for me.
Makes you wonder if the release of "30 second slip" and the DTV/Tivo announcement on the same day is just coincidence.

It is a coincidence. TiVo doesn't own 30 second skip. In actuality, it's 30 second slip that is somewhat novel in my opinion. Of course, they're going to have to establish priority before 1/27/06 (http://www.dbstalk.com/showthread.php?p=512567#post512567) to be able to file that one. ;)

Yeah that is a little weird. But why slip? that just seems dumb and annoying, why do we have to wait 3 secs per slip? Maybe it's the only way they could get a consitant 30 secs? Maybe they will turn the 6 sec skip to a 6 sec slip to make it work right.

I suspect it's so you see the ads you're skipping, even if at 10X normal. Probably going to be a little less annoying to advertisers.
I'd probably give it a try, but I suspect I can get better results with 60X FF and autocorrection. I never did like skip, either.

I think it's a very cool thing, many times I used the 30 sec skip on tivo and woud back up if something caught my eye in a commercial or upcoming news and such. This way I see a tad more.

That makes sense. I never used/liked skip either, but only used it on the UTV when the FF would start sticking all the time. I wouldn't have any reason to use it if they could fix FFx3 and FFx4 and make them work better. More so the FFx3 because FFx2 is a little slow. I kind of like FF thru because it's the only time that I might see previews for upcoming shows or funny commericals.
The 30 second slip is also used on the Motorola 6412 units. Its really just a macro function for the remote with the Motorola not sure how its done on the R-15.

me thinks this is a precursor to direct buying / leasing / whatever you want to call it..
TIVO'S ... GUIDE ability ... Suggestion info ... Wish Lists ... and incorporating them into their dvr's

What about the TiVo guide? If you mean the layout, well I can point to probably as many posts for people who hate it as like it. Suggestions annoy me, Wish Lists ya thats a pretty cool feature even though I never used them much.

I meant the guide having very detailed info on shows.
Suggestions and all features they are adding could have the ability to turn them on or off.
Wish lists are awesome
