View Full Version : Loss of some channels

Single receiver, single cable, dual LNB dish in open field (no obstructions).

Receiver shows high 90's signal strength.

Philips DSX5500 Receiver loses about half of its regular basic programming channels, not all, for days at a time.

Resetting the receiver to factory defaults cleared it up once.

DTV Tech says it's a "reception issue and not a receiver issue."

Any thoughts what is causing the loss of channels?

Just a shot in the dark but could it be a LNB issue?

I thought of that, but if there was a wiring issue or an LNB issue, the receiver wouldn't be pulling in other channels with no problems.

Are you losing all odd or all even or a mix?

Hey it could be an LNB. When the LNB is going bad itll kill some channels depending on the transponders it is using. Check all your connections and make sure they are tight. You would be surprised

Yes, check your different transponders to see if it is all even or odd transponders.

How long has the system been installed at its current location? If the dish has just recently been installed in that location, is this when your problem started?

Also check connections at both ends. Make sure no corrosion, that they are on secure, no moisture in them, etc.

A bad connection can result in a big enough voltage drop to knock out even transponders - which is about 1/2 your channels.

Try switching the connection at the dish to the other connector. See if that helps.

I swapped LNB's, changed the connectors (and ground block) from the receiver to the LNB, and everything came up...but...five minutes later, half the channels drop out again.

When I started today, everything was working (this problem is intermittent). Transponders 12, 16, 20 and one other were showing 0 but all other even transponders were high-90's.

Swap out the receiver Phillips don't have the best reputation. It sounds like a heat problem inside the receiver.:)

I still think it is the receiver myself. The problem is DirecTV said it was a "reception rather than a receiver issue" and won't provide a replacement box because of it. <sigh>.

I bet they'd send you another receiver if, all of a sudden, your box won't power up. :D

Thanks to all who responded. It fixed itself - the worst kind of fix - and all is operational.
