I for one was happy with L273, there were faults but none of the subsequent REALLY bad stuff in L274-5 !!

So is Dish rewriting code that is related to the Tivo/DVR case about patent infringement? (time compression or something like that - ie the concept of skipping ahead through the on-disk mpeg stuff)

Funny, Panasonic had the ability to automatically skip commercials on their VHS recorders, so of course it a natural on a disk based recording device! Of course again, the NAB stated that 'users that skip the commercials are stealing the product ' (paraphrased) so this could be another way NAB is screwing their customers (locals via....)

I am sure I am off on the details but Tivo won the first round, and Dish lost but said DVR users are safe to use for now (E* wants that damn $6 / mo fee).

This leads into, will fees increase if DIsh has to pay Tivo for their patents s/w in the DVR some day in the future??

Have Fun!!

According to Tivo's press release at http://www.tivo.com/cms_static/press_87.html "TiVo intends to seek a permanent injunction against EchoStar's DVR products." So if you thought L2.74 and L2.75 were bad, maybe in L2.77 they'll be forced to turn off DVR capability! (Hope not).

E* could now easily use this court loss as justification for a hefty DVR fee increase (whether financially necessary or not).

Utility patents expire after 20 years. I don't know what the effective date for Tivo's patents are (they own dozens, and even more are pending). So maybe by 2020 or so the DVR fees can be dropped?
