I recorded the HDNET test pattern for the first time today. I looked at it for a minute and couldn't see anything wrong with the screen. I thought that it might give me some insight as to why the guide is partially cut off at the bottom but everything looked perfectly aligned on the test pattern.

Can anyone tell me what the pupose of the test pattern is and what you can determine from it?

In theory if you align to the HDNet test pattern, you will be aligned to a standard alignment.

However, and this is a big however, it doesn't guarantee that all broadcasters (or the receiver menu software) is aligned to the same standards.

So I'm guessing your mileage will still vary. I haven't aligned to the test pattern yet, but in aligning manually I find that some channels want to be aligned higher or more to the left than others.

If I align the ESPN bottom scroller to the bottom of my screen, I find the tops of other channels cut off... or vice-versa.

It appears that not everyone is aligning their broadcast signals to the same standard.

You use them to make some basic display adjustments to improve your HDTV picture.

I've found that I only need to lower the brightness (black level) a couple of notches and then the TV's DVD input is right on the money. I use the HDNet test patterns to calibrate my sat input, and AVIA for my DVD input.

The test pattern time in now on Tuesday @ 6:50 AM ET

wow... similar post in the general dish forum... here's what i said:

I wish the receiver would have it built in... also you'll find that if you adjust to HDNet pattern, a bunch of voom channels will be off... i wish they'd all line up their content to one (standard) pattern... the kungfu channel is often off, i end up with a huge black bar on the bottom and small on top, but if i flip to hdnet, show, discovery, hbo and the black bars are perfectly centered...

voom, wake up!

I regularly find the scroll at the top of the HDNews Voom channel to be cut off, and titles across their weather maps to be similarly cut off.

Also, on my CRT I cannot get the entire width of the picture on the screen no matter what I do, and on the News channel this often means text in the legend (snow, rain, etc.) is cutoff no matter how I align.
