View Full Version : how do I force 10B8
How do you force the 10B8 software to download? I keep seeing info on inputing a code, but no info on how you go about it. I purchased the DTV-R15 ( model 300) after years with a DISH 510 and the No skip is killing me. Any newbie info on the R-15 and DirecTV in general is much appreacted. As posted elsewhere the manual is nor very informative.
Thanks

You can't force it unless it's already there for you to download. It's not there for everyone at the same time.

thk63, Welcome to DBSTalk. :) The other members have pointed out the "02468" code, i won't dwell on that, but as far as "newbie info", browse our forum and you will find a wealth of information on the R15. Our members pride themselves in posting the most up-to-date information as possible. ;)

then why have it at all other then your initial setup of the unit? also why doesn't this thing call Directv? or does it? and if it does, hoe do you tell? My Tivos could be forced to call TiVo... If I remember correctly.

Not sure what you are asking here. DirecTV puts the software for it's various receivers and DVR's into the data stream so that (a) when a new unit is installed it will get the latest software, and (b) to update all existing equipment when a new release is issued. What happened in the case of 10B8 is that it was put into the data stream for some internal (to DirecTV) purposes and was not coded to do the automatic upgrade for all receivers. However, as long as it is there, it is possible to force the R15 to look for an upgrade, which is how those people that already have it managed to get it. It is on spot beams, so it is not in the data stream nationwide.

If you have a phone line connected, the R15 will call DirecTV to report pay per view purchases. It does not call for other purposes. Tivo units called for a variety of reasons, and more frequently (daily?). The R15 calls less often (monthly? - not sure).

The normal (not forced) upgrade requires the box to reset, doesn't it? I had assumed there was some kind of late-night or early-morning schedule so as not to disrupt our viewing/recording. Which would explain queueing the release, and the ability to force it.
