View Full Version : Poll: R15 Hangs/Lock-ups/freezes
For the purpose of this poll, let's define hangs/lock-up's/freezing as any problem that requires a reset or pulling the plug to correct.

I have had 1 since I owned it, Nov last year. With that I must also state that it may have been doing something and I didn't wait for it to finish and jus thought it was locked. I would also venture to say since the last update I don't even get the slow downs anymore.

I didn't really have an exact match to the options in the poll. Mine has locked up 3 times. It's paused for 10 minutes or so many more than that. But all prior to 10B8. Given that, the times I've had problems was when MYVOD was under 20% available and I had about 30 SLs. Lower numbers of MYVOD and SLs did not cause problems.

If i recall correctly, i've had only 3 "lockups" requiring a restart, since November. Granted i have had some "slow responses" from time to time. Mine has never had any more than 20 SL's and no more than 65 in TDL. It has recorded what i've ask it to, but more than i've ask it to as well. (i.e. FR/RP).
Why are some experiencing these "lockups" & "freezes" and some are not?.........I wish we had an answer. :(
Some users are going through "H$LL" with their units and i can appreciate their frustration, as i would be frustrated also, if i experienced their problems, but i don't and it concerns me the most, that "sooooooooooooo" many bugs exist with "soooooooooo" many units and there are others that hardly experience any. "WHY"?????:confused:................No one seems to have an answer, only speculation and i believe that quite a few of our members here, are "right on" with their theories. :)

When mine locked up last night I felt the top when i was pulling the plug. It was pretty warm. I pulled the lid (It's nice that they don't have the void waranty sticker like on my Dish box;) ). The hard drive was pretty hot. Leads me to suspect a heat issue. I left the cover off overnight. Apparently the drive is spunup in standby mode. It was warm this morning, and I could tell it was spinning when I put my hand on it. I would think it could be spun down in standby.
I've got my box on top of my VCR on a shelf in my entertainment center right above my TV. I think I ve got enough airflow. I've got 8" - 10" on both sides, 2" on top and 6" behind it. I think I'll move it to the top of the entertainment center after the basketball gme and see if it helps any.

How many SLs do you have? I noticed a dramatic slowdown as I was loading SLs today when I hit 25.

qwerty, sounds like you have enough clearance. My thoughts when i first got the R15 was, "why doesn't the fan always run"? Seems it would help dispel the heat allot more efficiently, rather than only coming on "on demand" as it is currently set up to do. To be frankly honest, i have only noticed my fan running only a few times since getting this first unit in November. With this in mind, could be why some problems are occurring for some units.

I've got 25. I think I'll delete a few of those too and hopefully see an improvement.
Lock-ups and freezing are one thing on tehir own, but when you sit down with your family and say lets watch that movie we recorded... "just give me 15 or 20 minutes honey, it locked up again!"

We may be on to something here. 3 days since I paired down to 19 SL's and moved the box on top of the entertainment center, and no lock-ups! I'm wincining. I know "It" is just waiting for me to hit the Post Quick Reply Button. Gulp, here goes...
I have always had 50 SL's and they dont seem to be the main problem even though they are probably part of it. I used to think they were but then I would have lockups all the time and I dont. I will get a few lockups in a couple days, I will reset by pulling the plug then I can go weeks with out another lockup. If SL's were the main problem I would have the lockups constantly and I dont.
I also have noticed no speed decrease by having so many SL's and its still much faster than my DirecTivos. I question some peoples findings as their box is hacked, uses different HD's and their usage seems to be to find ways to force the R-15 to lockup vs using it like an average user does.

I had a black screen two weeks ago. I could watch VOD but not live channels. Reset fixed this. So far this happened only once.
When I got the R15s(2), one of my first ones was DOA. Before I registered it, the unit took an update and never came back up. (Tech took it with him)

I haven't moded/hacked any of 3 of mine (haven't opened them at all) or put them through hard cord testing. I just recorded the extact same things that I had on my UTV's. I think your right that it's not just SL's but I do think that is a big part of it. I've noticed in the last few weeks that it's been more stable. The only thing that i've done different is I haven't moved, add or delete SL's. I finally got thing pretty well balanced now between the units (conflict and dups on the HR10-250 just incase). So I'm thinking that the more SL and the more your moving things on the priorty list or todo list the more lockups you get.
4 days now. I was having 1 or 2 a day last week. I don't know if it was heat, SL's or something else. I was going to say I don't care as long as it stops, but I do wish I knew the cause. I sure hope it doesn't happen again.
Hopefully the DirecTV guys will see this poll. It's really not scientific, but indicates that nearly 85% of the users have had a lock-up, and 1/3 of them have them a at least a couple times a month. I think correcting that should be their #1 priority. (#1 being the highest ;) )
