Why Not...

Every Channel that is availble should be
offered to Customers...

I'm all for new channels but am curious as to the price tag of such an increased line-up. Charlie talks about cable being expensive but my in-laws have it & get a lot more than I could w/E* PLUS high speed internet for just a few more bucks than I pay now. (AT 100, 3 Premiums, distant nets & Supers, 1 additional receiver). Maybe they should work on pricing/restructuring current packages before they add more stuff to over charge for.

Most channels dont come in an east and west. And what is the use any way? There are PVR's to help with the schedualing.

KeithLINY

The Price Tag for DISH should be nothing, except for
DISH's cost for Recievers.

DISH Customers Cost should be nothing..

BTW: All the above channels are available on C Band
(some might not be offered to CBand customers)

PQ is great now isn't it!?! And since you subs DESERVE it we're going to crank up the compression just a little bit more so we can add 60 more duplicated channels! Isn't Dish great!! Great service, UNLIMITED bandwidth, and picture quality that has to be seen to be believed!

I seriously doubt they will offer a west coast feed of most of those channels over adding another channel. I would rather see a new channel than a repeat of another 3 hours later.

Dont forget the MTV and VH-1 suite channels.

KeithLINY
07-15-02, 12:44 PM
Oh yea, I forgot these channels:

MTV Jams
MTV Hits
MTV University
VH 1 Soul
VH 1 Country
VH 1 Mega Hits
VH Uno
VH 1 West

Does any Canadian satellite service offer any of these video music channels? Dont they package like movie channels in a package, music channels in a package, and so forth, and for less, giving more choice? If they could do that up there then they could do it here too, Dish and DirecTv CHOOSE not to although if everyone gets a bigger package then the price would be cheaper but I am sure the Canadian Satellite providers have a similar pricing structure for their combined packages like here so why cant they have the smaller packages here?

AJ2086
07-15-02, 02:38 PM
You wont get VH Uno it will be put into Para Todos if it isnt already there. That goes for all the spanish language channels.

Kevin

All those extra channels would be nice! Keep your hopes up after the merger because alot of bandwidth will be freed up and there will be lots more room for extra channels. Even though E* is strapped for bandwidth at the moment, they should look into adding some of those Cinemax channels that you mentioned.

Geeeeez! What a waste of space and

I would trade them all for MTVX! (If viacom didn't replace it with MTV Jams) Vh-1 country would be nice though, imagine that, a country music channel from Viacom with no Miss Cleo commercial every 3 videos :)

Save bandwidth for real programming, if the times are off for you, get a PVR & get real, JEEZ!

Adrian_R
07-15-02, 11:24 PM
Jeez, why the crappy attitude towards someone mentioning that they would want West Coast feeds for some channels?

I understand the bandwidth issue, but I know for a fact a couple of people who would move from cable to satellite in an instant, but don't because they don't like it that their shows are on tv before they get home from work. And these are people who don't deal with technology (PVR's) well, they are lucky to get the VCR clock set, or have children, etc.

So there is a need for West Coast feeds. Its not a "stupid" idea to want them. I'd rather have new channels than West Coast feeds myself, but that's because I own a PVR, but I can definately see how for some it would be a great thing to have.

Then again, if Charlie doesn't even know these channels exist (per his last chat), then its unlikely that they'll ever be added in any case! :)

Jacob S
07-15-02, 11:50 PM
I believe they will try to add new channels before the west coast feeds but eventually add them when all the locals are up and they do not have many more channels to add when bandwidth will no longer be an issue but with HDTV coming the number of channels could decrease as they look at areas to remove if they cannot get more space for these HDTV channels.

According to various reports, Dish has about 500,000 PVRs installed, and according to the 90-day report, 3% of the E*'s population consists of 501s. Therefore, everyone else has a VCR or just watching the programming.

Now, I live in California, not Connecticut. For some of these cable channels that have both an east and west coast feeds, paid programming start at 9 PM. With channels with a single feed, they repeat the evening programming twice. Unless I program my PVR ahead of time, my programming selection is somewhat limited at night, especially since effective this week, my schedule is 11a-8p Thuesdays, Thursday, and Friday, and 9a-6p Saturdays and Sundays.

Right now, until Echostar VIII is launched, Dish cannot add West coast feeds due to capacity issues.

As for additional programming, besides West Coast feeds, I would like to have a Old-Time Radio Drama audio channel. The audio would be mono, not stereo, and wouldn't take up much bandwidth. Yesterday USA (http://www.yesterdayusa.com/) has a free feed just for the asking.

Just switch to Digital Cable where the picture quality is much better anyway and they have all those channels!!!

Chris Freeland
07-16-02, 02:19 PM
Wow! I have not seen one of these, what new channels can we add threads for a long time:). Until the merger is approved and closed, I do not look for many if any new channels other then locals added. Once the merger is closed and the New E* starts consolidating to one platform, then maby some new channels and more west feeds of current channels can be added. At the very least if the merger is approved we will likely have Trio and the other exclusive D* channels made available to us soon after the merger is complete.:)

Jacob S
07-16-02, 05:28 PM
There would be that great feeling again like you get when you first get a satellite system again if the merger would go through.

I dropped AT&T Broadband-Sacramento right after they switched from Comcast. The customer support sucked. I'm getting as good a picture from DBS if not better than from cable.

There is no way, not even cable modem, that I will deal with AT&T broadband.

One channel I would like to see that as far as I know does not appear on cable or dbs is BBC World, a great news program that gives world news every hour on the hour. Any idea why it is not seen in the US?

I have Dish Network and Time Warner Digital cable..... I must say that the digital cable does have a better PQ.... I know most Dish owners don't believe that but in my area that statement is true.... And there is no rain fade...... I have the high speed internet also....... And if Dish don't add my locals soon (satellite dealer told us they would be added in october.... that being october of 2001...LOL...anything for a sale), I'm gonna have to give up on my Dish or move out...... I'm spending my golf money to pay the Dish bill...... Sooner or later, I got to give up...... But, the longer the heat index stays around 110 degrees, there want be no golfing..... I got the Dish network when Time Warner wasn't up to par but they have gotten 100% better and surpassed the Dish Network..... In my opinion.....

One more thing, the majority of those channels are on digital cable..... I pay 60.00 per month and get the digital movie package (encore, sundance, flix east and west, IFC, FoxMovies) and the digital sports package (which is fox sports south and 3 digital fox sports net ... atlantic, central, and pacific).... If you add the locals and sports package on dish the price is about the same and i wouldn't get all the channels I have on digital cable...... And yes they have HDTV on Time Warner and that HBO on Demand and Video Demand on PPV (where you can pause, rewind, etc.)

If you're perfectly happy with your Time Warner digital cable, then more power to you. I wish I were that lucky with my cable company.

Keith don't you realize that with Digital cable not all of the channels are digital. I don't know how it is in SC but I know that my parents in CT and some friends in NY that most of their channels have crappy reception.

I have no lines or shadows on any of my channels with DISH.

Also the Top 150 includes the Encore package, a sports channel and all of the regulars for something like $40 + another $6 for the locals and that's only $46.

What do you watch on multiple Fox Sports Channels anyway as most games outside of the local viewing area are blacked out?

Why have both satellite and cable?

Mark Holtz
07-18-02, 11:52 AM
One thing that I've noticed: Dish and DirecTV have better intergrated PVRs into their systems, while the cablecos are only just starting to realize that PVRs may be a good idea.

Who let the dogs out? You're kidding, right? You must be in the 1 single cable area in the country that has decent digital cable. You should try AT&T Broadless Band, they are awful.

I switched to the Dish Network a few years ago when I was having trouble with the cable..... Since then, they added high speed internet and we got a special on the whole service for a year.... I have 2 more months and the rates go to normal... Right now I pay 69.95 for both internet and cable w/digital...... It was only 20.00 more for the digital cable and I talked my ole lady into getting it to see the difference between the services..... Well as time has rolled on, the cable has gotten alot better..... Yes, the top 50 channels are analog but they are pretty good (not as good as dish but not far away)..... I prefer the Dish but ole lady wants the high speed internet and likes having cable in all the rooms..... If my locals was to get added in few months I would keep the dish otherwise I think the cable will be the rule..... After the special, the cable will run about 60.00 per month..... I like all the sports channels for talk shows and college sports.....

What about CSPAN 3? I think they need to add this channel.

I am one of those who switched from digital cable to Dish because I wanted a better picture without the noise in the analog channels on cable. Right now PQ on Dish I think is worse then it was when I first got it (1999). I hate when I see pixeling of anykind, especially when watching football on local channels which supposedly don't get a lot of bandwidth.
I am all for more channels, but PQ is more important for me. Also now that I have a 721, I have no need for a lot of west coast feeds. ALthough I do like the west coast locals (I have two) they actually have some different programs as opposed to west coast cable channels which are just time shifted..

Even after E*8 is launched, don't expect very much more GI channels to be added at lease until all 210 DMAs are launched. E* will still be very hard up for capacity.

They will add a channel or two every so often if there is enough demand for it, just like they have added the National Geographic Channel and Much Music. Maybe by giving us one every once in a while it wont spoil us all at once and have something to look forward to.

Dont the FTA receiver get all of those channels they have up on the satellite before subscribers can purchase them?

TNGTony

Jacob,

To be fair, Dish was FORCED to add National Geographic and Fox Sprts West 2 (coming soon) in order to finalize the deal for the retransmission consent of the Fox owned and operated stations.

Similar deals were the cause of other channel additions (retentions) like Lifetime Movie Channel (Hearst) and ABC Family/ESPN Classic (Disney).

Are you kidding BBC World is all the World News, not some of it, and in a slant free reporting style.

Most major news organizations CNN, and the Major networks seem to slant to the Neutral to Liberal side of stories as well as Americanize the News. FOX News or FAUX News is so slanted to the Right it's not even funny.

More European English language channels....

I seem to remember there being a Dutch channel in English along with a few others. It'snice to get TV with a little European flair (I have TV-5, but my French is only so-so so I get lost sometimes...)

The wife speaks it better than me which is why we have it.........
