First of all I know this works in Latin America, you can suscribe to Directv in one country and take the receiver to a different country and get all the channels like if you were in the original country. my father in law does it.
Well I live in the US and I wanted to try that out here, so I brougth my mom's second directv from Colombia, receiver and access card, I hooked it up and it to one of my american directv lines here, and it doesn't work, it gets the signal from the satellite when I go to setup and check the signal strenght is at least 90, but the receiver still says searching for signal.
So I am wondering if I may just need to change the access card instead of the whole receiver, or if maybe just the satellites are different for north america and south america. any ideas?
DirecTV Latin America is on a different sattelite, you would need a dish pointed at Galaxy 3C at 95 degrees to see that programming.

Any idea how to point the dish to that satellite? I have an extra multisatellite dish laying around in my garage so I guess I can just install that one for use with the colombian receiver.
So do you know if th edirection is similar to the one that we use for American directv? how can I point it right if I don't have the signal finder installers use.
I've never done this before I always get the free install when I move, so any help would be appreciated.
Thanks
There are some websites out there that tell you where to point it. The World Direct channels in the 2000s are also on that satellite, so someone here might be able to point you in the right direction on where to get the coordinates for your location.
US dish will not work. Direct Latin America use bigger dish and LNB is hard to find. Also, where you live? South US has signal but higher you go signal will get weak and need bigger dish. If you have right dish you can point to 95 degree satellite, just left from D* 101. Another thing, is not legal to use in US. That just in case you didn’t know.
Good luck.

Yes I am in southeasth US, and I have a multiswitch dish, so I guess I need to install it just like the one I already have installed and simply change the azimuth a little bit to the left, is that right?
Any idea why it would be illegal to have that if you are still paying for the monthly service with the original service?
I am going to give it a try just to see if it works, until I confirm if is true that isn't legal.
Thanks
