It appears that this uplink will be online this summer ... a step in the right direction away from relying on E* for uplink.

Yes, this is very good news for SA. I just found out this week that they have already hired at least one person for this new uplink center. We'll keep our ears open for more news...

Actually he's probably the chief operator. Knowing the background of the individual they hired I would not see him taking a "sit at the console and watch TV" position but more of an engineering position making sure that it's all working.

IF Sky Angel breaks away from Dish will I still be able to receive it on my 301 receiver with Dish Network dish pointed at 61.5?

If I need new equipment it will be costly to continue since I will need to buy new equipment and hire a tech to reaim the dish or install new dish if the dish network dish isn't compatible.

Also I would lose the Dish Network PI channels that are on 61.5.

I don't expect E* and SA to break their networks apart. It would cause problems for subscribers to both networks if they were not sharing the 'core' data between E* and SA transponders. E* only and SA only subscribers would be less affected.

The main problem for SA would be what to use IF they didn't just use E* receivers. There is certainly a benefit to them to have E* constantly improving receivers. Plus having 12 million potential customers with receivers that need only the addition of a dish (for those without 61.5°) is a bonus.

I believe SA will do whatever they can to keep their ties to E* equipment and the data streams.

What they are (apparently) changing is that SA will be uplinking their own transponders. E* manages to uplink transponders from six uplink centers and share the data streams ... it shouldn't be too hard to send the stream to SA to include on their service.

Would an uplink center in Cleveland TN be able to hit 129 and 148 as well as 61.5?

Would an uplink center in Cleveland TN be able to hit 129 and 148 as well as 61.5?As long as Sky Angel has no licenses at those locations it is a moot point - but those satellites are visible from TN (129° more so than 148°).

Being able to see the satellite from an uplink doesn't help unless you have permission to send signals to that satellite. Ceil and E* are unlikely to allow that.
