Important news about the recent channel outage

May 25, 2006

As you may already be aware, on April 14th, Good Friday, we experienced a sudden loss of programming on 10 of our 36 channels. EchoStar Communications Corp., owner of the DISH Network satellite service, communicated to us that this loss was due to a technical failure of its EchoStar III satellite that we are currently sharing with EchoStar per a technical agreement we have with the company. We were successful in working with EchoStar to get seven of our 10 channels back on the air fairly quickly. Regrettably, three channels were not reinstated, and this technical failure evolved into contractual issues with EchoStar that, due to confidentiality restrictions in our agreement, we cannot publicly discuss. Unfortunately, despite our best efforts, we were unable to negotiate through the issues and are now prohibited from reinstating the channels that carried Three Angels Broadcasting, Golden Eagle Broadcasting and SPIRIT. Now that there is finality concerning our negotiations with EchoStar and it is certain that we will not be able to provide these three channels at this time, I wanted you to understand the reason.

I deeply regret the inconvenience that this interruption in programming may have caused you. As many of you know, we’ve faced a number of challenges with our relationship with EchoStar over the past few years; the Lord has guided us to positive outcomes in these cases (Romans 8:28) and we will continue to trust in Him for guidance and strength (Proverbs 3:5,6).

Presently we are exploring an option that might enable us to add one or two channels sometime in the future. We are happy to be able to continue carrying “3ABN Today” on our Angel One channel and hope to work with 3ABN to air special events, such as 3ABN’s “Ten Commandments Weekend” special that we carried in May on our special events channel, Angel Two. We continue to carry Safe TV which airs several of the same programs that 3ABN airs, including Sabbath programming. Additionally, in early June, we are trading the SuperChannel TBN feed with the national Trinity Broadcasting Network (TBN) feed on Channel 9709. TBN carries many of the same programs that aired on Golden Eagle and many others that were not previously airing on Sky Angel. Also, there are programs that aired on Golden Eagle that are airing on other Sky Angel channels as well, such as Richard Roberts’ “Hour of Healing” on our Angel One and Angel Two channels. Additionally, while Sky Angel already offers more contemporary Christian music than any other cable or satellite provider, we will be looking for ways to add more Christian music in cooperation with SPIRIT Television.

I ask for your prayers as we continue to move forward with the vision the Lord gave my father, Robert Johnson, Sr., for this project a little more than 25 years ago. Sky Angel’s mission is to build and operate a global direct broadcast satellite system, using our own satellites, as the most effective means of assuring that the Gospel will penetrate every nation, culture and people—even the most unreachable regions of the world. To build and launch our own satellite will cost in the neighborhood of $150 million dollars to achieve. It’s an awesome mission in both magnitude and cost, however, one that our studies have shown is attainable with the dedication of our staff and the growing support of Christians here in America subscribing to the Sky Angel service. We have been in negotiations with a satellite manufacturer for some time and have begun an effort to identify sources that will be helpful in raising the necessary funds. Sometimes the challenge seems almost beyond comprehension, but I’m constantly reminded that with God’s help everything is possible and that God’s will always prevails. As we grow, it is my prayer that additional resources will become available that will enable Sky Angel to support various other works of ministry around the world with one common purpose: to share the life-changing message of Jesus Christ.

Yes, Sky Angel is a television service, still delivering into your home, church or business a wonderful array of TV and radio channels to edify, inform and entertain. But Sky Angel is also a unique work of ministry whose impact for the Kingdom has the potential to be huge. I pray that we can count on your support as we continue to trust in the Lord to guide us during this challenging yet exciting journey.

In His service,

Rob Johnson

Wow! This is not good for Sky Angel. They already had a limited number of channels in my view. This could hurt new subscriptions and renewals.

I wonder if there were any offers by either side to include these channels as public interest channels from the 61.5 bird so both Dish and Sky Angel customers could view them. I know Sky Angel doesn't want Dish to carry more Christian channels but this would be a good temporary solution.

Another suggestion would be for Sky Angel to share Worship TV and Spirit on the same channel. Each could air 12 hours a day.

Also, for what good it will do, I will email a letter to Charlie reminding him that Sky Angel is important to me as a Dish customer. If Sky Angel goes under then that would allow me to look at DirecTV as an option for my other programming. Up to this point I haven't even considered DirecTV because they don't have Sky Angel.

Any other suggestions for a solution?

This would be very bad news for Sky Angel.

Obviously SA didn't have a clause in the contract with Dish that if a failure occured on a transponder SA was using, that SA could take back a transponder that they leased to Dish.

Looks like Spirit and KTV will start sharing channel 9703

From the Sky Angel web site (http://www.skyangel.com/Programming/Index.asp?IdS=001789-CC49580&x=003|001&Reference=&Id=62&t=Tv)

SPIRIT (Coming soon to KTV)

Coming soon to KTV-Kids & Teens Television/Sky Angel Channel 9703 as a special programming segment: The best hits from yesterday and today, SPIRIT Television features music videos—not too hard, not too light—from popular contemporary Christian artists such as Avalon, Zoe Girl, Third Day and Mercy Me. Viewers will also enjoy a fresh mix of on-air personalities, music news and programming.

Those that can see these things have not seen a technical reason with the satellite why that transponder cannot carry the same content as before. It is almost as if E* has decided that since E3 is a certain percent unusable due to transponder failures that they have simply decided to scale back SA's use by the same percentage.

This is where having their own uplink will help. Even if E* is in full breach of contract they hold the keys to SA being on the air at all. E* controls the mux.

Putting Daystar back on seems to be part of this. Charlie isn't afraid of being sued.

Maybe he can try putting 3ABN, Golden Eagle and SPIRIT up as well.

Wait. DISH can now launch a new package called "UltraLord" featuring religious channels that aren't seen on Sky Angel! :D

Christian Family Basic Tier

Are you implying that Christians are not Americans? That would be ironic since alot of Christians seem to think that being American requires one to be Christian.

No implication intended ... perhaps
Bob's "American Christian Family Basic Tier" ?

Just think, it would be another tier on Dish Network that you could not add premimums or porn channels too :) There are enough "relgious" channels out there that Skyangel does not carry that E* could build up a nice package of Christian/relgious themed channels if they really really really wanted to annony skyangel!

Some channels I found on lyngsat that "could" be a nice "Christian/Relgious themed package" if Dish wanted to really step on Skyangel's toes.

I cannot believe SA is not bringing back these 3 channels (I especially liked Spirit). I have the 4 secular channels blocked-(Hallmark, Hallmark Movie, Home & Garden and Fox) I refuse to watch them. When we signed up with SA in March of 2005 I enjoyed and trusted all the channels I was receiving. I think it was a matter of months and everything was changing more secular. Does this type of stuff happen all the time with SA or is it a fluke? (Maybe Satan is following me.) My choice of channels are getting smaller and smaller.

There is no doubt that SA needs to, now more than ever, start moving toward building they're own delivery system to their subs. I know they said it would take 150 million to launch their own bird. That's a challenge. But I think the constant moving, changing, sharing, adding, and deleting of it's channels grows tiresome to thieir viewers. When you have a channel on the system, people get used to it being there and don't like it when it goes away. It's ok once in a while to make changes, but SA has had to make a LOT of changes in the past few years. I've been a SA sub for over 6 years now. I like the programming but don't like the constant changes. I pary thay can accomplish their goal.
About the religious Dish package, that's a good line up of channels. It would be great to see SA able to pick all those up someday. I also have Direct and they carry World Harvest, DayStar, The Church Channel, TBN, The Word Network, TCT, NRB, BYU, & EWTN.

If you have a full-power TBN station in your market you may be able to get 5 SD networks OTA on one digital channel! Here in northern Ohio I receive WDLI-DT rf ch 39 (licensed to Canton but transmitted out of Akron). On this one channel I get:
17-1 TBN, 17-2 Church Channel, 17-3 JCTV, 17-4 Enlace TBN, and 17-5 Smile of a Child.

Why do you refuse to watch those 4 channels? I hear that HGTV, and the Hallmark Channels have good stuff on them even though it aint religious. You can leave Fox News out though.

It doesn't have to be religious. I just don't enjoy watching sex or nudity on television (or in public, newspapers, magazines, radio etc...), I think that should be left in the privacy of a bedroom between a male husband and a female wife. I guess I shouldn't assume, but I'm figuring the commercials will be full of it too. I tried Fox News and it was bad with the nudity I figured if news needs this, I can imagine an entertainment channel.

I enjoy watching sex and nudity. I don't enjoy watching pointless violence of the use of objectionable language.

You don't need Sky Angel's channels (unless they changed drastically) or any cable or satellite. You can just use a over-the-air antenna for free and see it all the time or just go to your local grocery or shopping center. Plenty of it at the check-outs. You're pretty lucky, it's everywhere!

I missed the entire point of your post. If it even had one.

It had one.

You're in the wrong forum if you want to discuss watching sex and nudity on TV. That kind of programming has nothing to do with SkyAngel's offerings (except brief clips on Fox News which probably wouldn't be enough to satisfy someone looking for sex and nudity but would be enough to annoy those looking to avoid sex and nudity on TV).

You can find sex and nudity in the places MellowYBird listed - but generally NOT on the SkyAngel service.

FWIW, I have always been a big advocate of the TV Guardian and ProtecTV foul language filter systems. It seems that you just can't get through a movie without a few F#, D#, A# and other unessesary utterances of profanity.
