View Full Version : Help With Satellite/Cable Choice
Hi All,
We are moving in two weeks and are trying to decide whether to keep cable or go with DISH/DirecTV.
Currently with Time Warner, we have 6 tv's on cable, with HBO and Starz. We have one digital box and two regular dvr's. The other three tv's only have the analog channels. We are paying about $100 a month.
We'd like to price a similar setup on DirecTV. I'd like to keep HBO, but not necessarily Starz. Can I get some recommendations from the forum regulars here on the best setup and best price/vendor to go with?
Thanks in advance to everyone for the help.

I've got Total Choice Premier on six total receivers with two of them being DVRs. My package runs about $125 a month, so you should be able to get in at the $100 or less price with just the two movie packages and one of the lower packages.
The regular receivers won't cost you anything up front. However, there is an upfront cost for the DVRs.

I agree with TigersFan. See my equipment below. One of the R15's and the two R10 are not active. Other than that they all are active with Total Choice Premier. My bill runs $123 a month.
Hi All,
Thanks for the replies. My problem is unless I can save a decent amount of money, it isn't worth switching from cable to satellite. It doesn't appear from the replies that I really can save much, if any, money.
TWC Cable and Satellite are about equal in the programming that I watch, their isn't really an advantage to either one there. The issue is the money.
Thanks again to everyone!!!

If you go with Total Choice ($45), HBO($12), and lease fee for 5 receivers(First one free)($25). That adds up to $82+tax. You could still keep stars and still be cheaper. Plus you get all channels on all TV's where you only got all channels on 3 of your 6 tv's. It might be worth switching.
EDIT: I forgot the DVR fee... Add $6 to the total.

Is it worth it to buy any equipment on eBay? Does it save the monthly lease fees?

If you own your equipment you pay a monthly mirror fee. If you lease the equipment you pay a monthly lease fee. Both are waived on the first receiver so only apply to receiver #2 on up. Only difference with lease is DTV will replace it if it breaks.
