Hey,

I am looking into getting satellite (not sure between directv and dish) but I don't really want them to check my credit. Is there a way to just purchase a basic receiver? I don't want/need anything fancy, as I will only be hooking in one tv and don't really want a dvr right now.

Thanks!

Just go to a local satellite retailer in your area and tell them what you told us. I'm sure you'll find they have no problem selling you the equipment.

If I recall correctly, if you don't give DirecTV credit info they will insist upon a deposit of some sort. They are very focused right now on only accepting credit-worthy accounts. They will also require a 1 year committment to activate a new account with a basic receiver.

As far as purchasing a basic receiver, go to newegg.com. You can also try ebay, and there are other places as well. Since you would have to make a 1 year commitment anyhow, why buy a basic box when you can get a leased one and a dish and installation for free?

IIRC, Dish will now let you prepay. Sounds like that would work great with your own equipment.
