Does anyone know movie launch dates...right now I only have 2 movie available. :( This looks like it is going to be interesting. The 24 hour limit sucks! :D I wish they whould have an option for Unlimited Time, Unlimited Viewing, for any and every movie they have for one monthly fee. That would be nice!

The number of movies is limited by the amount of space set aside on your receiver. On a 508 they only set aside room for a couple of movies. On my 622 there are several to choose from (all of them are still 24hr rental and $1 more than the equivalent PPVs which CAN be saved on your DVR for later play).

E* set aside zero space on the 501. I suppose 30 hrs for "user controlled" DVR events doesn't leave room for movies that may or may not be watched.

"ON DEMAND"

Movie CHANNELS are far from On Demand.

I see...How long has On Demand been out? I just got the update a few days ago.

stupid question, but how on my 508 do I tell if I have received the update to access the on-demand?

Press the DVR button. If you get a menu page that has 2 options...One for "My Recordings" and one for "Movies and more". Movies and more is the On Demand Feature.

Hope this helps:)

Yesterday my 510 receiver just received the software for on demand movies. As I was going into the recorded events for the DVR suddenly there was a menu with choices. I believe they were "my recorded events" and "on demand movies" or something like that. Anyway, I went into "my recorded events" to watch something and low and behold there was the full length recording of "brokeback mountain"!?!? Has anyone else received a free movie like this? I have no intention of watching or paying for this movie so it better not show up on my bill.

I haven't seen that.

Thanks John....it wasn't there this morning, but this evening when I loaded up a recording for my kids, there it was!!

The "On Demand" movies are not free ... they are actually $1 more than regular PPV yet can only be viewed for 24hrs. It does take a couple of keypresses to buy one of these movies. IIRC: If you have PPVs locked you will need to enter your password to buy an "On Demand" rental.

Well, the Brokeback Mountain recording is now gone and I never deleted it. It's been over 24 hours since I discovered it on the DVR receiver so it must have been an on demand download. I suggest watching your Dish bill carefully for unathorized downloaded movies. I will refuse to pay for this.

You CANNOT delete on-demand content. E* controls that portion of your hard drive, adding and removing content in a hope that you will see something that you will rent.

If you want to see what has been purchased (in case you are wondering if someone in your household bought an on-demand movie) go to Menu-6-5 "Purchase History". VOD events are listed there (along with any PPVs).

Just because the movie is on your hard drive doesn't mean that someone requested it or that you will be paying for it. You only have to pay for on-demand content if you rent the movie. If you're worried LOCK PPVs and you'll need your password to order any movies.

Thanks. After checking the "Purchase History", there are no purchases showing up. I am the only one living in this appartment and it was the bedroom DVR receiver so nobody even touches that TV but me. Plus it happened during a time when I wasn't home and nobody else was here so there was no way it could have been downloaded. I guess dish just wanted to give me a freebie.

How do you lock out this junk without locking out all PPV channels? I subscribe to MLB EI and prefer to lock out individual channels, not all.

I guess dish just wanted to give me a freebie. One more time with emphasis: The movies are not free.

What dish wants to do is encourage you into paying $1 more to watch that movie within 24hrs of rental than you would if you just set your own DVR timer to the PPV version and watched it as much as you wanted to until you deleted it from your DVR.

This On-Demand thing is pure crap. Why would anyone want to pay a buck more for a movie that is only viewable for 24 hours when you can spend less and record the movie to keep forever ? What genius at E* came up with this one ?

One thing I don't understand is why they don't have an On Demand like Comcast does. That's one thing I miss (and the only thing) about Comcast - is it because of bandwidth, or what?

when you select to watch a DOD movie, it does ask if you want it and indicate how much it costs. Did you see that prompt and did you say yes to it?

And a pre-recorded voice announces over hysterical background laughter, "Thanks, you fool - you could of watched this on PPV for a dollar less and recorded this to your DVR to replay whenever you wanted !!!!' :hurah:

There was no prompt. There was simply a recording of a the movie "Brokeback Mountain" on my DVR hard drive when I got home. This was also the first time the new menu appeared when I hit the DVR button.

James I don't understand what you are saying. If this isn't a freebie then what is it? I had "Brokeback Mountain" on my DVR for 24 hours and I didn't pay for it. What else do you call that? A mistake?

I think what he is tring to say is that the movie was with all his recordings he has on the hard drive. It was appring under "My Recordings" and not under "Movies & More".

Well if it was appearing under "My recordings" I would think it came from PPV. I don't think DOD movies show up there or they might for the 24 hour period. I rented one to see what it was like, but never actually looked in My recordings.

What might have happend is jericho was watching the preview. One thing to remember with DOD, when you go there you will see a list of movies to choose from. Those are a list of movies that have been downloaded and are available viewing at a price. If you did not get the charge dialog, I doubt you will see it on your bill. The DOD feature does offer a way to fiew a preview so that might be what jericho saw. Hard to say at this point, but I think we can conclude nobody is getting a free viewing of brokeback mountain.

Hmm, not that I care but I don't see it. I think I have a 508, anyway it's the model that holds 39 hours of video.

Brokeback was one of the current movies offered "on demand". It should show up if you choose the "on demand" option. You won't be charged for "on demand" unless you actually rent a movie, so don't be afraid of looking to see what is lying in wait on your secret HD.
