I've had my 510 for over two years, and I know that all hard drives die, but it's still sad when it happens. Just a day or two after the arrival of Dish on Demand (just a coincidence :sure:) the hard drive made its farewell noises and became inert. To its credit, the 510 told me about the problem and continues to work as a live-only tuner.

I called Dish tech support fearing the worst. I got a friendly screen-reader. After hearing that I had already tried the rudimentary forms of DVR CPR (full reset, unplug and replug), she pronounced it dead. Then she checked and saw that it was purchased and out of warranty. As my hopes sank, she offered to put me on the $5.99/month Dish warranty program and immediately replace my 510 for free. Woohoo!

The only thing I'll miss is all those vintage shows that are gone forever. You try telling a six-year-old that he'll never see his favorite episode of Mini-Golf Madness ever again. Now you'll excuse me, I've got some overdue computer backups to perform. :)

Even backing up to video tape is better than losing the programs completely. Hard drives are not permanent storage media.
