View Full Version : 622 HDMI port died, then 622 died

my HDMI port went out last weekend after working for a few months.
called CSR and he said it is a known problem with the HDMI/DVI cable
they supplied me with the 942 i was still using - i had my doubts but
went out and bought a straight HDMI/HDMI cable (wanted to do that
anyway!) and of course it still didn't work.

he then had me reset to factory defaults the 622 and then the whole unit
locked up and no amount of hard or soft resets would fix it - great right
in the middle of the weekend of the French Open Tennis finals! so
i had to go watch men's final on girlfriend's Cox cable HD - which isn't
too bad. Cox DVR doesn't have as many good features as Dish but it
*always* works.

although i'll probably be sticking with Dish i would not recommend it to
anyone who's not ready to deal with mega-problems - i almost wish
i had hung on to my 942 - it *finally* after almost a year had the s/w
bugs worked out - but i wanted EPSN2 HD and Dish forced me into
a 622 for it.

bottom line - new 622 coming to me soon - ugh...

It's scary how the HDMI connection seems to work for a while and then all of a sudden stop working. I haven't had problems with it yet, but from stories like this, it seems it could happen any day now.

So is that the new story? It used to be that some televisions were not following the HDMI specification.

A DVI tv would would, of course, not follow the HDMI standard.

maybe i should have clarified i was using the HDMI/DVI cable with the DVI/HDMI
attachment on it (all supplied by Dish w/ 942)

It appears to me with all the problems people are having with the 622 it may be worse than the 921 at the same point in commercial history. I recall mine was working pretty well after 5 months of updates and a forced reboot daily to refresh whatever was required. Today, my 921 is essentially trouble free.

Anyway, my VIP622 arrived today but the scheduled install date is not until the 26th. I guess the fun and games will begin then. I sure hope I will be in that 40% category that many are in who have no issues with the 622.

I would never consider the problems of the 622 on the same scale as those on the 921. They don't even compare. The 622 is much, much better than the 921 ever was.

lujan- When you're the one not having any issues (yet) you would be justified in stating what you did. If you review the posts I made back in the early days of the 921, I too, was not one having many issues. I'm still on my first 921 which, today, is recording and playing back as perfect as it should. IT did take about 9 months before the 921 worked that well for me and since, only has had a 3 month stuttering problem that E* techs knew what they did wrong but took 3 months to find a way to fix what they broke. The 622 HDMI issue seems to be lasting much longer. The stuttering audio is lasting much longer and spontaneous reboots about the same so far as the 921. These seem to be the major issues. The one issue that the 921 had that I don't see with the 622 reports here is failed recording events and erased hard drives. I suffered erased hard drive once at about 6 months into its life but never experienced a missed recording, never. I think some of those who did have these issues may not have set the timers right or had conflicts that presented no warnings. Later, the 921 got better at flaging conflicts for poorly set timers. The 921 also surfaced issues with early adoption of PSIP. While many suffered with this, blaming the 921. In reality it was not the 921's fault but rather the PSIP generator's setup at the station. I worked with one local engineer and we proved that! E* tech in Atlanta was happy to learn that fixing the PSIP generator was the root of those bug reports. Anyway, keep your fingers crossed for me as I begin the game of dealing with E*'s "make our subscribers into lab rats" again! :) All I really want to do is enjoy the great variety of HDTV they are now offering. I'm excited about the 3 new national channels. In effect, with these new channels, I will be returning to E* as my primary HDTV provider. PS- I have decided to keep my 921 until it dies. Having the extra HDTV DVR capability will be worth it. Later I may get a second 622 if they prove trouble free. Currently my 921 is filled up with the James Bond movies.

I'm also not having any problems with the 622. There is the OTA Recording problem, but I solved that by recording the Local HD off Sat. I can't tell the difference in quality. On the other hand, I didn't have problems with the 921 either. I think a lot of the new boxes ... not just Dish's ... and not just DVRs ... have tolerance issues with the hardware.

I can only report what I'm seeing with my 622 and not what others are reporting. I am also only comparing the problems between these two receivers (921 vs. 622). I don't see the issues of the 622 anywhere as serious as the issues we saw with the 921.

While I have seen some number of problems with our original 622 and also its replacement, neither box has ever missed a timer either OTA or Sat.

there is a huge difference between the two on my 622 - OTA is much clearer - not even
close!

Our DC locals seem identical in PQ from Sat and OTA. 37" HD Plasma.

What size HD TV do you have? I suspect larger than 37". :)

my rig is in my signature - 41"
the satellite locals are very jerky (actually they are smooth but missing frames or something)
