The BBC's flagship pop music programme Top of the Pops has been cancelled after 42 years, the BBC has announced.
"The time has come to bring the show to its natural conclusion," said the BBC's director of television Jana Bennett.

In a statement, the BBC said the weekly programme could no longer compete with 24-hour music channels.

Top of the Pops was first broadcast in 1964, from a converted church in Salford, Manchester. The final edition will be shown on 30 July.

The pop programme was only commissioned for six episodes when it began in 1964.

It had to happen sooner or later. In the U.S., American Bandstand didn't last long after MTV came along. When we lived in the UK (81-85) there were still just 3 channels (we were there when Channel 4 started), now with Sky TV, everyone has gotten used to having a variety of choices we would have killed for.

Wow, i remember growing up on Top of the Pops. I cannot believe it is still going and now they are cancelling it. It was a great program in its day. Lots of memories there...

Why get it free when you can "Pay TV" ?

(Maybe they could substitute an infomercial for audio cassette versions of the same music. Maybe even 8-track tapes!
