View Full Version : When will HDTV migrate to 110/119?

Im wondering if eventually the need for a 2nd dish goes away?

I guess it will take the merger for that to happen? Or can it happen sooner with the enhanced HD module? i.e. they could duplicate the HD channels in enhanced format over on 119 and then phase it out once most people convert to the new module.

As more spots go up, are they going to move all locals off 119 (except those used for non-market areas)?

I would love to be able to go back to one dish and get rid of my rats nest of cables.

For Dish to move HD to the core sats, the merger will definitely have to happen, and even then most likely it'll be a long time, if ever. That's my opinion.

The problem dish faces with this is that even with enhanced they get 10-12 non HDTV stations per transponder, but only 2, maybe 3 HDTV ones.

Until demand for HDTV grows to the point that regular "cable" channels all start to convert to HDTV, they will not want to limit the channel selection to the great masses of HDTV oblivous consumer. It is currently much easier to sell 170+ channels plus 50 movie channels than it would be to sell 50 HDTV channels. Adding another 20 obscure channels and having AT200 would probably sell better (not to mention using a bunch of transponders for LIL) than HDTV.

like almost all technology, hdtv will take time to go mainstream, and by then, with or without a merger, there will probably be newer technologies, newer satellites, etc...that will allow everything or almost everything to be placed on a couple of satellites, with the need for only one dish...the unfortunate thing for the early adapters is that they have to struggle through the wait and the changes until it finally reaches the masses...just think dvd and how 3 years ago you couldn't even rent them at most stores...

personally, as I have just purchased an hdtv set, but as of yet to buy a receiver, i will be extremely happy to add a second dish and a dish 6000(or future receiver), knowing i can get a handful of stations (major networks, some movie channels, etc)...I live 20 miles from Los Angeles, which has about 11 OTA channels, but unfortunately my geography prevents me from receiving anything...so if dish could just add a few more worthwile channels, i would be very happy...for the time being that is...

belsokar,

hope you are aware that you will be able to get KCBS-DT (Ch 2) HDTV from DISH since you're in the LA DMA.

i am aware of CBS on dish network...it would be nice however to get all the networks since my viewing is split fairly evenly between the networks...making the $$$ investment just to catch a couple shows in HD isn't quite worth it right now...however, if CBS had NFL in HD, I would buy immediately...

anyone know if HDHBO has any of its popular series in HD? (sopranos,6feet,sex in the city???)

Supranos!

Not 6Feet.

Dunno about SitS, don't watch it.
