View Full Version : Question on how timers work

I just noticed something strange that makes me ask if anyone has more details on how some of the timers work.
I am watching the new show Kyle XY and have a all episodes timer set for the local ota (hd) broadcast. I noticed comments of episodes being on ABC family. I set another timer for that.
I now see an episode on abc family being skipped as a duplicate on Monday. Its apparently a duplicate of the show being shown next Friday on the ota channel.
I would guess that this may be normal behavior but am curious if anyone knows how these differences are resolved.

I set up timers on mine just exactly like you described, and I think I know what's happening. You defined the OTA timer that fires on Fridays before you defined the timer on ABC Family, which fires on the previous Monday. By doing so, the priority of the OTA timer is higher than the ABC Family Timer.
During the nightly update, the timers check themselves against the guide database in their order of priority. If you want the ABC Family timer to record, you have 2 options - manually unskip the timer on Monday, or delete both of the timers and then define the ABC Family timer first, before the OTA timer (if you choose to define that one again).
then define the ABC Family timer first, before the OTA timer (if you choose to define that one again).
Rather than delete the timers, why not just select one of them and change its priority to be higher (if you want it to take precedence) or lower than the timer you want to happen?

The order they are in happens to be what I want, i.e. HD over Sd. But the results really surprised me.

When I tried that, the Monday timers didn't automatcally get unskipped. I believe that's what would happen after the nightly update ran.
