View Full Version : How to Get on the HR20 Waitlist
Folks,
Here's an EMail response from the DIRECTV website that I received on Friday (8/4):
Subject HR20 HD/DVR/MPEG4 Discussion Thread Response (Fae)08/04/2006 07:47 PM Dear Mr. (my name here),
Thanks for keeping in touch. I'm so happy that after the long wait, finally, we will be able to give the HD equipment you very much prefer. For more information about the wait list, please call (888) 355-7530 and a Customer Service Representative will be very glad to assist you.
Thanks again for writing. Please stay tuned to DIRECTV.com/hd for the latest news about HD offers from DIRECTV.
Sincerely,
Fae
DIRECTV Customer Service
The phone number given above takes you to 'Installation Support'. My first call went to a CSR who had apparently been hired only minutes before my call. So after waiting five minutes, I called again.
This time I got a very knowedgeable CSR who knew all about the HR20, its availability in August (yes - THIS August) and after a few minutes delay, had me on the 'waitlist'.
According to the CSR, they will contact me by EMail as they work through the waitlist and I will have the opportunity at that time to accept or decline the HR20 offer. The CSR's do not have the final pricing at this time.
The unit spec's she provided for the HR20 were:
30 Hours of MPEG2 HD
50 Hours of MPEF4 HD
200 Hours of SD
You might as well get in line..............
ADMIN EDIT - Since DBSTalk now has a special arrangement with DirecTV regarding the "Wait List", it's much easier to use our online form by CLICKING HERE (http://hr20-offer.dbstalk.com/).
Why do I get the feeling that this "offer" is going to be something that more than a few people are going to decline?
This doesn't sound like the "free upgrade" that everyone was hoping for.
It sounds more like a "you send us your old $1,000 receiver and we'll lease you a shiny new one for the low low price of $299" like E* did. Maybe you can trade your HR10 for an AT9 and installation.

Maybe because the OP is in San Diego he is able to get on the list now. Makes sense because the rollout is in LA.

I hate to sound like a child, but at this point, it hardly seems worth it to wait for the HR20 in CT. While it sounds great, only 2 local HD channels at launch, God knows when FOX and WTNH will be added. I love D* why am i hanging onto sunday ticket when I get all these games in HD but no pats games in High Def makes what good is sunday ticket if i cant watch MY team in High def. If not for dumb blackout rules, I could live with it.
NO luck for me, and the CSR said late fall...Given that "late fall" is December, I'm not impressed. Sounds like the general availability has slipped again (with all due respect to Earl's repeated admonitions that GA has not been announced). It will be interesting how they reconcile not having the HR20 widely available for the holiday shopping season.
It is a very good thing that the HD stuff will be MPEG2 for this NFL season.

Notice how the people above that were told "late fall" are *not* in the LA market. Exactly as expected. LA in August, more markets to follow as fall rolls on.

I would think that the goal would be to push out all corners of the envelope including testing the receiver with MPEG4 content and AT9 antennas; neither of which I imagine are very popular in LA. Of course you don't want to bite off more than you can chew and maybe they're just concerned about other fundamental aspects of the product and the beta testing of the MPEG4 issues will be continued in a different market later.

I doubt that the MPEG4/satellite interface portion of the receiver is anything they're even particularly concerned with beta testing. That's stuff that gets technical testing in a lab, not worked out while the receiver is in actual customer's homes.
Here's a quote from Chase Carey (CEO) at today's (8/8/06) 2'nd Quarter Finanacial Results Conference:
"...we're also very excited about the launch of our new HD-DVR which is scheduled to be introduced in Los Angeles later this month and nationwide in the following weeks."
It appears to me that they are planning for a fast rollout schedule!
(quote is from 'investor relations' page at DIRECTV.com)

There's no reason not to do a fast rollout after LA. The only reason they're releasing it to LA first is in case of a show-stopping bug. The proximity to the HQ makes it easier on everyone if all of the receivers need to be recalled. Once the receivers are out in LA for a while, they'll go straight to a nationwide rollout.

First of all, I am a new member who just signed up, but I have been reading posts on this site for the last couple of months. Congratulations to this site's administrators....this site is very informative....
Now to the business at hand...I live in South Florida and tried the phone number posted in the initial string. I spoke with a very knowledgeable CSR. She put me on the e-mail list, which she said meant that I would be in line to be contacted to get the HR20, but that "getting on the list" didn't automatically mean that I would be signing up for service with the HR20....I told her that I had upgraded to HD a few months ago (around Father's Day), and that I was promised a free upgrade once the HR20 was rolled out (which I was), and she said that I would get the HR20, an AT9 dish and installation for FREE....:D She made no mention of having to trade in anything, although an "upgrade" by some definition might have to involve a trade....
I asked about the ETA for the rollout. She asked me for my zip code, and put me on hold....she came back and told me that she is being told August-September....:D
Stay tuned....:hurah: :)  :D
I live in Central Florida.
1st call: "There is no list"
2nd call: "That isn't available yet. I don't know when it will be."
3rd call: "That won't be released until fall, when you see it advertised on TV call back and we can schedule your install."
All three calls had no pricing information. The first rep guessed that it would probably be "$99 like all the other upgrades are." The other two reps wouldn't even guess.

To add to this, LA is still served by both MPEG2 and MPEG4 sats for the same stations.

Do you know how BIG the Los Angeles, CA market IS???
Geographically, it is HUGE, population/customer base is HUGE, and, Directv's headquarters and operations are in LA. I think they are taking this opportunity to get the most avid HD sector of the LA market somewhat switched over to MPEG4, to scale back the ONSLAUGHT that would happen if they just suddenly switched over to MPEG4.
Also, remember LA and NY markets are the ones that are used to deliver DNS, ie distant networks both SD and HD to the areas of the country still w/out locals, or having waivers to get the national feeds. They cant just turn off MPEG2 HD DNS to those subscribers w/out a big roll out either, so I think they have been trying to piece-meal it out.
Thats my observation, for what its worth.
They cant just turn off MPEG2 HD DNS to those subscribers w/out a big roll out either, so I think they have been trying to piece-meal it out. They need to go to a market where MPEG2 isn't an option if they want to really test the waters. It really doesn't matter how large the market is if too many of the HR10 users can choose to sit tight. Chicago (3.4 million) and Philly (2.9 million) aren't exactly tiny and all of the customers hungry to record HD locals will be clamoring for the HR20 as it is their only option. A much better test of acceptance.
Using Chicago, Philly or anything on the eastern side of the country won't work. These places are not early adopters. LA is definitely an early adopter of technology and everything else that comes out. The east coast doesn't get into the swing of things until a year later.
Oh and by the way, I called up and got on the email wait list with no problem. Took about three minutes.

I just called and the CSR "Kimberly," who sounded very cute, said there was no waiting list. But, there was an email update list which she put me on. Any news about the HR20 will be emailed to me whenever it's available.
No word on costs but she reminded me the HR10-250 was still available for $750.

For those too lazy to call, I simply sent them an email and they added me to the list. This was my email:
I am anxiously awaiting the arrival of the new HR20 and I read that there is a waiting list to get more information when it is available. I was wondering if my email, ******@****.com could be added to that list. Thanks, Andrew
And their response was:
Thanks for asking about our forthcoming HD DVR. You’re now on our list for regular e-mail updates about this product. We plan to send monthly updates in the next few months, until the product becomes available. At that point, we’ll tell you how to order one.
Thanks again for writing and stay tuned to DIRECTV.com/HD for the latest news and information about HD programming.

"I am anxiously awaiting the arrival of the new HR20 HD DVR and I read that there is a waiting list to get more information when it is available. I was wondering if my email, XXXX could be added to that list."
And I received this reply last night. It looks like they are calling it the DIRECTV Plus HD-DVR (HR20):
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Dear Mr. XXXX,
Thanks for letting us know your interest in purchasing DIRECTV Plus HD-DVR (HR20). I'm sorry to hear that about the confusion about the availability of the HD DVR that has the capability of receiving local channels is HD. The new HR20 receiver brings together the new DIRECTV Plus DVR and DIRECTV HD Receiver. You can record one HD program while watching another and record two different shows at the same time, while watching a pre-recorded program.
This MPEG-4 compatible equipment will be the first DIRECTV HD receiver with interactive capabilities, and is expected to be available sometime in Fall 2006.
If you need something that isn't available online or need further assistance, you can always email us through DIRECTV.com/Feedback and we'll get back to you within 24 hours or you can call us at 1-800-531-5000 (not 1-800-DIRECTV) for fewer automated selections and faster service. Our call center is staffed with knowledgeable Customer Service Representatives and are available, 24 hours a day, seven days a week to assist you.
Thanks again for writing and please stay tuned to DIRECTV.com/HD for the latest news and information about our services.
Sincerely,
Jim

Everything I've read about this thing has been poorly written. That PDF you posted some time ago says "It receives HD local channels via satellite (where available), all the other great DIRECTV channels and has our latest DVR and interactive capabilities.", which would imply it doesn't have ATSC tuners. I really can't wait until someone has one so we can know once-and-for-all what this thing can do (and how well it does it, of course ;)).

I sent another email via DirecTv's Contact Us page yesterday:
"I have been a DirecTV subscriber for about 9 years and want to upgrade to HD with DVR service including HD locals without having to install an OTA antenna. I thought the DIRECTV Plus HD-DVR (HR20) was to be released already, but I have read in your forums that it is still in beta testing. Is there any way to get included in the testing as a beta tester? I do not know how much longer I am willing to stick it out as a DirecTV subscriber for these services when they are available today, and have been available for months, from my local cable provider and other satellite companies."
And received this response:
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Dear Mr. XXXX,
Thanks for your interest in a high definition DVR. As you know, we currently offer an HD DVR that can record programming off of our national HD stations like TNT HD, HBO HD or Discovery HD that are broadcast in MPEG-2 format. However, judging from your email, it sounds like you’re more interested in one that can record off of your local channels through DIRECTV, which are broadcast in MPEG 4 format.
I see that you are aware of our testing of the new HD DVR that can record programming broadcast in both MPEG-2 and MPEG-4 format. The test is currently limited to just the LA market, but once the tests are complete, the receiver will be available nationally in late Aug and Sep 2006. I’m sorry I don’t have any more specific information right now, but stay tuned to directv.com for the latest news about new equipment.
In addition you can learn more about DIRECTV equipment by signing up for our technical newsletter. Just respond to this message and we’ll make sure you get the all of the latest equipment news.
Thanks again for writing.

Adam

I too got the "late August/early September answer" for DMA 40, Birmingham, AL.
The first line CSR said $399 to lease, $749 to own.
The advanced tech CSR saif that these prices were for the LA test market only and are subject to change. She didn't have any details on dish price or installation price.
FWIW, the advanced tech CSR, was extremely polite and was overly apologetic about not having concrete aswers, which I told her was no problem and that I understand the device is still in testing mode.
She also asked if she had answered all of my questions to my satisfaction.
Wow, they must have gone through some serious customer realtions training over there!

I contacted customer service got to the 2nd rep, stated what E network has offered, I will get the new dvr receiver for $150 when it comes out. I also got $10.00 less a month on my bill for 10 months. In the meantime I am getting the 5 lnb dish and h20 until the dvr is available. I am a 10 yr + customer with directv.
I had a very good rep and just stated I wanted a better deal than what dish was offering.

Just tried to "get in line" to get my HR20. Called the install department and they transfered me to another rep. After about 10 minutes of him looking through all the available offers, he says "I'm sorry, but the HR20 won't be available for your area for another 2 months". Said that it has something to do with the testing of the LA locals that currently occupy the 80's channel range. Said that those will be "switching to the new" equipment, which I take to mean they'll be going mpeg2 as well.
In short, those of us in SD county can't get it for 2 months. Ah well!

I do not have a h10, never had any dvr or hd service with directv.
Memphis according to directv website is supposed to get hd locals this month, but rep I talked with said probably the dvr and local hd channels will probably not come online until a couple of months from now. I have antenna in attic and my locals are great in hd. For me since I have gotten cheap sd receivers and free installs in the past I am not upset over $150.00, E network wants $199.99 for their hd dvr and look at the prices for the hd/blue ray players. I agree everyone does not want to pay full price but when I talked with rep she stated you have never been late on payments with us. I wonder if folks trying to get good deals have had poor pay history with directv and they are going to charge you for your slow pay with them.
Whoops, I feel like an idiot...
Nevermind, I deleted my whole post.

Is this list the real deal or something to be suspicious of! I would like to sign up for it if it is real. Also, I live right on the Tennessee state line, about 50 miles from Nashville and I get there locals with MPEG 4. I called DTV and spoke with a CSR and they told me what my deal would be and all that good stuff. When I was advised when the HR20 would be available, the CSR said that I could order one between the last week of August and the first week of September! Does this sound to good to be true??

Called directv customer retention on Friday to see if I could get an HR-10 for free which I could, but the CSR told me that would void me from getting a free HR-20 when they came out. So I said I wanted to wait for the HR20, which she said would probably be out in time for Sunday Ticket... take that for what you will. CSR put a note on my account that I authorized to get a one time upgrade to the HR20 when it comes out, this will include the 5LNB dish install as well. About the only thing I had to agree to was a two year term and to add Superfan, which I already had anyway.

About the same odds in making a 52yrd field goal....
They are trying to make it for the start of the NLF season... but no guarantees.

Because of your question though, we have placed an autorepsonder on the form to verify that signups were successfully processed. Anyone signing up from now on will get a verification e-mail.

There is no doubt that Robert will get them quickly but it's really hard to say which customers will get them first. Our signups are being sent directly to DirecTV which means the allocation might be larger. Robert may only get a certain amount of receivers to sell. That is just a guess though. Which ever way you go, you will eventually get your HR20. :)

So if I currently don't have an AT-9 dish I would think you shouldn't bother with this deal.
If you add it to the cart you will notice it comes with installation and the AT9 dish. I would like to know if insallation comes with a multiswitch to replace my Terk since I have 5 receivers.

Installation of the AT9 is supposed to come with the appropriate multiswitch if you require it. If your installer tries to charge you for this, complain to D*.

I don't see that. I'm an existing customer.

Not at this time since the signups are being sent immediately to DirecTV. If you feel uncomfortable about it, you can always signup again but if you completed the form and you got kicked back to DBSTalk after you pressed submit, I'm 100% sure your registration went through. Of course, another option is to just put your name on both lists. :)
Should I expect any kind of confirmation e-mail from D*after submitting this form?
Thanks
I was a little apprehensive without the immediate feedback, but I feel better after reading this:)

Here is the email from valueelectronics.
For existing customer would the HR20 come with the AT9 dish and installation? Also I have 5 receivers in my home hooked up to a Terk multiswitch. Would I have to purchase an additional multiswitch or would that come with installation?
Thanks for the email. Yes if you purchase the HR20 from us we can get DIRECTV to give you the AT9 dish, new 6x8 switch and installion.
After you receive the HR20 DIRECTV can schedule the install.

I got that far before too, but no where during the process of ordering or in the summary does it say HR20 or HD Plus DVR. Granted it does include installation of the AT9, so it may be the HR20, but I still see no conclusive evidence on their site that it is the HR20. Are you seeing something different in your browser?

Although that summary does sound in line with the HR20.
It does, but it's the same summary they've always used for the HR10. You know that they'll be pimping the extra features of the HR20 when it's available.
How definitely?
Why I think its HR20 it does not mention TiVo. I just got the Tivo (H10) for free, are they still selling these for 399? was told current LA area HR20's or going for 399.
Jeremy W

Why I think its HR20 it does not mention TiVo.
I just thought of something else. Because it doesn't mention Tivo, they may just be sending out whatever DVR is available. If someone from LA orders that item, they'll send them an HR20. But if someone outside of LA orders, they'll send them an HR10.
bonscott87

They haven't promoted the "Tivo" name on receivers for a year or more now ever since the decision to drop them. They refer to all DVR's as...well...a DVR.
You are correct. :(
Just confirmed with D* it is the HR10 not HR20.

Yeah, the HR10 can access locals in HD too. It just has to do it OTA.
You can access premium MPEG2 HD content and local HD OTA with the HR10, so that doesn't wash.
Rest assured that you're not going to get an HR20 until they are more widely released. Also, it is unwise to take anything on the website too literally. They are being vague for a reason.

I wonder if they'll do triple cabling for when the OTA section is turned on.

At the top it says HR20-700S, and at the bottom it says HR20-250. It's obviously a typo from someone who's used to putting in HR10-250 all the time.

KEY FEATURES OF THE HR20
300 GB SATA internal hard drive
Up to 200 hours of SD programming
Up to 50 hours of MPEG-4 HD programming
2 Satellite Tuners
HDMI, Component, S-video, and Composite Output
Image displays ranging from
480i to 1080i
KEY FEATURES OF THE HR20Glad to see that at least DirecTV has the good sense not to use the mfg code.300 GB SATA internal hard driveSomebody needs to let Best Buy in on this.2 Satellite TunersThis troubles me that they're being silent about the OTA capabilities (that admittedly don't exist yet). If this doesn't change before wide release (especially in markets without HD LIL), there's gonna be some major grumbling. There will doubtless be grumbling from the H20 users anxiously waiting to upgrade too.

Actually, I believe only 250 GB is for user use (the rest is for VOD) if I'm not mistaken (but I could have sworn it was going to be a 320 GB hard drive, but then maybe that was the TiVo Series 3 I was thinking of).

It troubles me too, but I can understand why they wouldn't be touting that feature since it's not active yet, but if I were them, I would have been mentioning it (and then put a little part about it not being active yet).

I believe the HR20 is being held back from markets that do not have HD LIL until the OTA is working.
I believe the HR20 is being held back from markets that do not have HD LIL until the OTA is working. That would make sense, but it would be a double slap in the face for those in "lesser" markets.
Hopefully the "public beta" for OTA won't last for two months.

I received e-mail from D yesterday stating HR-20 was available. After calling D and talking to CSR, this is what I was told. Originally the price was $399. After I told him that I had been customer for long time and had service plan, he told me he could knock off $10 a month on my HBO for 6 months. So I asked what price would be to buy 2 units. I was told that you can only purchase 1 per household for first 6 months of rollout. After being on hold for a few minutes he came back and informed me that now my price was free HD/DVR & $21.95 S/H, and free install and dish. After 3 seconds of thinking about it I agreed. Install date he gave me is 9/21. I am a little leery since I could never actually get him to say HR20. He kept telling me it was new HD/DVR. He also wouldn't confirm that they would change multi-switch also. So I guess when they show up, I will find out if I am actually getting NEW unit
no luck getting one in Milwaukee (even though HD-Locals are available here)....

Yup. That was the "VIP" list we signed up for. An email to tell us they were available at Bestbuy for 399.00. Information that was posted on this very form a full day before this "VIP email" notice was sent.
This forum already provides us the latest news, frequently even before some DirecTV employees find out. How exactly does an "exclusive" notice sent out to the "VIP DBSTalk" members with day old news provide an "exclusive" or anything useful at all for that matter. A complete waste of time.
Chris Blount
09-07-06, 02:07 PM
The list was conceived as a method to notify users here at the forum that the HR20 was available. I don't believe there were any promises of special pricing deals. We worked closely with DirecTV to make this happen and to allow our members here at DBSTalk to be one of the first to own the HR20. Best Buy just happened to be the vendor that was supplying them but that was up to DirecTV how they wanted to handle distribution.
I'm sorry if you think it was a complete waste of time. For some, it wasn't. Many are now receiving their HR20's ahead of those who are still waiting for other vendors to ship their product. This was the goal of the list.
We try our best to serve our users in a positive way. Although the HR20 waitlist result didn't come out exactly the way we wanted, it still served hundreds of users here at DBSTalk which is better IMHO than not doing anything at all.
I hope this clarifies things a little. Despite the negative comments, we will continue to help the satellite community in any way we can. We have also noted your feedback and will try and improve things the next time around.

In all fairness DBSTalk members had an opportunity to get the HR20 in time for the NFL season's first day, which no other dealer could offer.
In July I made a deal with DIRECTV senior management to get the first allocation of HR20-700 for my exclusive distribution and somehow at the last moment other senior management decided to give it to BB. Personally and professionally I hold no hard feelings as I understand that big business will always make the best deal for their company possible and BB certainly was a better choice of mass distribution over my company.
I do not think it was fair for anyone to overcharge for the early delivery, but that was not DBSTalk's fault in any way. However, that being said, many folks were happy to get the new HD DVR a few days early and did not mind paying a premium.
We should all be happy for the efforts that DBSTalk’s staff invested in the spirit of helping its members. DBSTalk could have easily sold the static HR20-700 sign up banner to a retailer, but they chose to offer the members a benefit instead.
Anyway it's all over now as HR20-700's are in stock nationwide and will begin to be released possibly as early as this Monday.

I can confirm that HR-20's have arrived at Nashville, TN area Best Buys. However, I have been unable to get my hands on one as my local store is sold out.
Has anyone ordered on Ebay? Did you get the real HR-20? They are selling on Ebay for $297 + $22 S/H vs $399 at Best Buy. I'd love to save $75 if Ebay sellers are legit.
I also question the fact that the Best Buy shows the HR20-700s and ebay has HR20-700 without the 's'.
Anyone have any insight into this discrepency?
Cheers!
