I was reading the manual for the 625 DVR that they just installed and noticed that it has this optical audio output. Right now I have it connected to my Pioneer VSX-D811S receiver. This does have an optical audio input. Would there be any benefit to buying an optical audio chord and connecting this up or will everything sound just as good with the standard RCA chords that came with the DVR?

Thanks,

Neil

I'm not to sure as I "was to lazy" to read the fine print but will eventually when the moment grabs me :p BUT .. I have my DVR 625 optical audio hooked up to my stero receiver and speakers and it sounds "great" (I had a spare cable). They are cheap enough at Radio Shack and may be worth your while. If nothing else, it's less "cable messy" (which is why i did it) and dosen't take up another A/V input. :D

I find that all the channels sound better through the digital audio output, even if they aren't Dolby Digital. Channels with DD and other info is on the EKB Dolby Digital (http://ekb.dbstalk.com/236) page.

I picked up a cable at Target yesterday. They had a Monster one that was 4' and a GE one that was 8'. I decided to go for the Monster, even though it was a little more expensive as I didn't need all that extra cable and with a small extra purchase I had a $5 off coupon for Target (a new store just opened near work). It hooked up easily enough and sounds nice. I looked on the EKB: Dolby Digital page and saw the Showtime channels can have it. We have Showtime for a couple of months, so after hooking it up I went through each channel. On one of them they were showing a movie in Dolby Digital.

I was going to swap out the RCA video cord with the S-video that came with the receiver, but unfortunately, that cord was made incorrectly on one end. Only one end actually fits in. That was quite annoying. I presume it is too much hassle to call Dish and try to get a replacement from them, so I might buy one. The picture looks pretty good anyway.
