I predicted years ago that they'd eventually start overcompressing and maybe downrezing to squeeze in more hd locals.
Well, the numbers don't lie. It's not horrible yet, but watch the bitrates get worse and worse faster than new bandwidth/better compression is added.

I just upgraded about 3 weeks ago from a Dish 6000 to a ViP 211. The HD channels look good for the most part. Not so for the locals. I'm in the Wash, DC metro area and the local channels have a heavily compressed look to them. Hard to describe, but it looks like a soft image (a la SD broadcast) and then an extreme sharpener applied and so you get this weird motion/ghosting effect and unnatural skin tones. Good think I still have my OTA antenna on the stand-by for local broadcast, capture and archiving.

That is a great expression of how the over compression looks. Another way I describe it is it looks like a water color painting in motion.
