Which is better to get for Indian channels....Directv or Dish Network? I know the HindiDirect is 6 channels for $29.99 for Directv vs 12 channels for $54.99 on Dish Network. In India Star Plus is #1 channel for 5 years in a row, which Directv has. Now Directv has NDTV 24x7, Star News, and Doordarshan India too. Dish Network has Sony, Zee, TV Asia, Sharah TV and News, & movie channels. Please help. Thanks

I have both.

Actually, I have the HindiDirect from DirecTV. I truly appreciate the 24x7 news channels like NDTV on this. Plus, having DD India is great too. I don't care a bit about MTV Desi or have only marginal interest about Star Plus.

Then I have Sony+TV Asia from DISH as well. Other family members truly care about some content on Sony. I could live without it. Parents, when they're here care about TV Asia a lot, especially the classic movie/music stuff. Actually, I don't mind some classic movies on TV Asia once in a while either. I absolutely, positively dig classic Hindi music - Mukesh/Rafi/Mannadey etc. (Explains why I hate the MTV Desi stuff.)

Anyway, I don't end up paying a whole lot for both. DISH is my main platform for all programming, with above 2 channels added on. DirecTV is almost an a-la-carte, because I took the DirecTV Basic tier (only $10 a month) and tacked on HindiDirect to it. I don't waste any money on duplicate/redundant programming.

Cool thing about having both DISH and DirecTV is that it gives me great cricket PPV options in the future. Around the time Ashes start, I think I'll subscribe to DirecTV CricketTicket India Half. Then there are some cricket PPV events which are exclusive to DISH. If India are involved in any of them, or I just find them very interesting I might consider subscribing them as well.

Chandu,

Iam somewhat similar execpt - directv is my base (english+hindi direct) and dish for sun tv (tamil channel)

NDTV is my fav channel and couple of good movies in star and sun.

As u said we can watch PPV cricket which comes on both channels but i guess directv is better in the sense champions trophy and world cup will be coming here.

My question now is:

do u have superDISH and if yes have u watched "south asia world" channel which i heard is very good (aka cnbc india)???

It used to come in superdish and now am not sure???

pls respond.

No, I don't have SuperDISH, just a DISH 500 pointing to 119 (I think). And don't have CNBC India or South Asia World. Just those 2 channels I mentioned.

Also, if whatever this Sahara Filmy comes onto my Hindi Direct and I'm not interested in it, I won't be happy with an increased price. I'll let DirecTV know about it by dropping HindiDirect. Hopefully they'll provide it as an option to include it.

DTV is $50 more expensive than Dish but if you speak to a CSR and point out that Dish is providing the exact same series for $50 less, they will give you a credit on your bill. It worked for me but I can't say if they will do this as a general rule.

HD programming is carried on the 119 and 110 satellites, and (almost) all International programming is carried on the 95 sat-two completely different birds. BTW, I heard something about D* moving the last remaining Chinese package on the 119 to the 95 soon. Perhaps they are making room for the channels you seek (but I hope it'll by HGTV-HD instead of MHD!)

Praneeth,

Which satellite/channels was the Champions Trophy shown on on DTV?

As a displaced Aussie, I want to watch the Ashes, but I don't speak Hindi or other non-English languages.... so I don't subscribe to any international package, nor have a 36x24" dish. Up until Jan/Feb of this year, DTV's PPV cricket coverage was on Sat 101 (channels 117-119), so I got these with my standard DTV setup.

I didn't plan to subscribe to Champions Trophy, as I was travelling a lot, but when some prelim games were on, I couldn't find them on my guide. Has all the cricket migrated to Sat 95 now?

Just wondering if I have to get one of my spare 18" dishes pointed at 95, and multiswitch in the equation, before next Wed night!

Thanks

Looks like Directv is giving Dish a run for its money in South Asian International programming:

CricketPlus is an awesome channel given free as part of hindi direct.

They have 2 hours same day highlights of all matches that are shown in DTV on PPV.

Also they are showing all time great classic cricket matches!!!!

Iam also hearing that Star Gold is going to come very soon (its coming to UK this month end) and when this happens....more customers will move to DTV sinnce

STAR (plus,one,news,gold) + NDTV+Cricketplus is much better than 15+ channels on E*

Also i see from satelliteguys (Scot) that some internationals from E* are moving to DTV...dont know which all..we need to wait and see

I have asked Scot for details and will keep u posted.

Hello all:

Good for DirecTV to launch the CricketPlus channel in the US.

So there hads been a lot of talk about wasting bandwidth of the DTV satellites. Now think about this, 120-180 channels for 40-50 USD/month, or 14.99/channel and more for packages for the international and PPC channels/ The margins and markups on these channels and cricket PPV events are much higher than the local channels/packages. ewer viewers maybe, but larger margins. Just plain common economic sense.

I do agree that the Cricket Plus channels should be offered a-la-carte. I have no interest in the Hindi programming package.

AS for cricket lovers and viewers, a coupld of questions:

I noticed that the Cricketplus.tv websitee listed the matches between India and South Africa, and the Ashes. Now are these live events or replays? I understand CricetDirect is shoing the Ashes and the India/South Africa live. Just trying to fugure out if I need on or both? wondering if I need one or both???

Thanks.

Alright mates, I know this is not DirecTV related, but cricket related nonetheless. I know most of us crazy ones aren't really loyal to a platform like DISH or DirecTV. We are loyal to the sport. I even know bunch of us subscribe to multiple platforms.

Considering this, here is new information which would be of interest to you. There is a new channel started on DISH called Zee Sport America (channel number 576) which is right now in free preview mode. This channel will be showing whole bunch of cricket which DISH had acquired rights to. (Meaning all of ICC international cricket - whatever DirecTV's Cricket Ticket showed.) Put it other way, if you had DirecTV Cricket Ticket + Zee Sport America from DISH you would have the whole enchilada.

(I know that in Canada they do have a single channel called ATN-CBN which stands for Asian Television Network - Commonwealth Broadcasting Network http://www.asiantelevision.com/atncbn.htm which shows pretty much the whole enchilada on a single channel, and it can be subscribed to on a single platform, e.g. any one of Bell Expressvu, Rogers Cable etc. However in USA, there is no such single platform solution except willow.tv broadband internet.)

Zee Sport America is on Free Preview until October 3. They are starting off with Pakistan vs. South Africa test which is being shown right this minute. They will also show India vs. Australia second ODI later in the morning.

Apart from cricket, it appears they will also show some other sports e.g. Indian Football, some other Asian Football, and ATP tennis events originating from India. For example they had Kyrgyzstan vs. Cambodia Nehru Cup football few minutes ago, had a promotion by Sania Mirza. They might also carry FIFA World Cup qualifiers for Indian national team or maybe some other Asian World Cup football qualifiers, although I'm not 100% sure about that.

Anyway, that's the info for what it is worth. At this moment, I have no idea how much they will want to charge starting October 3. Assuming it's a reasonable cost, one big advantage of subscribing to this channel might just be that it's a single home for cricket, instead of having to pay for multiple PPV. I just hope it would be a cheaper option than adding up individual PPVs.

Alright, so I'm in front of my receiver and watching NDTV right now. The audio level seems slightly low compared to Star Plus, but nothing I would consider as alarming. With volume setting set to same value as from some of my other input sources (DISH receiver, DVD player etc.) the volume is reasonable such that I can hear everything just fine.

I compared it with some other channels e.g. Doordarshan (OK, I know it's a bad example based on what we already said above, but somehow I noticed the bad bass problem went away!!!), CrickePlus, Setanta and bunch of other stuff. Nothing radically out of the ordinary. Then I tuned to Star News and Star Plus and the volume was much louder than everything else. So maybe the Star family of channels have their volume go up, instead of NDTV going down?

Can you tell if you're comparing NDTV with some other channels, and if yes, what are some of those other channels you watch very frequently? Or are you still seeing just NDTV with very bad volume? If latter, it might be something isolated to your system not seen at my end.

If the volume is set to 8-10 normally, all channels were coming good in terms of audibility. (Star group will be louder, MTV India will be the highest and CNBC/CNN will be right for that level)

In the last 5 days, I need to keep NDTV at 16-18 to get the same audio levels that used to come at 8-10.

I dont see any difference in other channels.

I have raised this issue with DTV and they have told me to wait.

I want to get the feedback from other users before escalating with them.

Appreciate your response.

OK, no. I definitely don't notice such drastic difference. Probably the problem is isolated to a subset of some systems then.

BTW, I'm using R15 for my receiver and regular analog RCA cables for audio connected directly to the display. What is your receiver? Also do you use RCA cables for analog audio or something else for digital audio e.g. optical link to send audio output to a separate amplifier/speaker?

Star TV to expand operations in North America
Tuesday - Oct 16, 2007
Televisionpoint.com Correspondent | Hong Kong
Star TV is expanding distribution of its signature Hindi and Mandarin language programming in North America with the opening of a sales office in Los Angeles. Headed by David Wisnia, Vice-president for Distribution and Sales, the new office will market and drive distribution of Asia's most popular networks in North America.

In the United States, Star is looking to expand distribution of its current slate of four top-rated channels, which are currently available on DirecTV are Star India PLUS, Star One, Star India News and Vijay TV.

Star will also market Star Gold and several Mandarin language channels. Star's Mandarin language channels include Star Chinese, the top-rated general entertainment channel in Taiwan, and Channel [V], the trend-setting youth channel.

Star's Chief Operating Officer, Laureen Ong, says "Asians, particularly those of Indian and Chinese descent, represent the largest growing ethnic group in the United States after Hispanics. We know the US demand for Indian and Chinese programming is growing, and Star is well positioned to offer thousands of hours of quality, original programming to this under-served market."

David Wisnia comes to Star following nearly eight years with Fox Sports International, including four years with Fuel TV. Most recently, Wisnia was Vice-president, Business & Legal Affairs responsible for assisting in providing day-to-day oversight of business and legal affairs department, which supports the Fox Sports/Fuel TV cable television channels, domestically and internationally (including in Latin America, the Middle East and Africa). As part of his business affairs responsibilities, Wisnia was also responsible for launching the Fox Sports networks into Africa and Turkey.

The only solution to this is getting satellite TV. Now I ive in an apartment and they don't allow to install the dish outside the apartments, I want to know if I put the DISH inside the house, will that work?

Also, which is better in terms of price and channel line ups, DISH or Direct TV. I am interested in watching movies, news, cricket, serials etc.

Channel 9X-Price Increase even though they have extra concerts/specials
STAR Gold-FTA or place Sahara Filmy to the black list
Channel V India-Alternative to MTV India most of the former VJ's new shows are on STAR One.

As per the deal, Dish will provide five Asian television channels of Star to South Asian and Chinese viewers.

Star's two Hindi entertainment channels Star Plus and Star One will be included on Dish Network from 19 March. Beginning 26 March, three of Star's Mandarin-language channels - Star Chinese Channel, Star Chinese Movies 2 and Channel [V] Taiwan - will be added to the network.

I think to keep there hindidirect I & II customers directv needs to add new hindi channels soon else everybody is going to ditch them. Dishnetwork has alot of channels and plus a cricket channel (zee sports) that airs live cricket games.

I called directv to cancel my service even though I'm still under contract (ends Sept of this year). I told the customer rep that I can't afford it and he said since I am under contract I can't just cancel my service. Next thing he told me is that I can suspend my service for 6 months (no charge of anykind) and then cancel my service once my contract ends.

NDTV Imagine on HindiDirect Ch. 20xx....oh wait a minute, still up there :nono2:

NEW DELHI: The US has asked India to ease its television downlink policy for international content providers, who need to set up an office in the country or operate through a local agent -- a process which makes their operations taxable here.

The US has been raising the issue with the Indian Government through different channels, including the high level bilateral Trade Policy Forum, saying the present downlink policy in India is "overly burdensome and results in a taxable presence" to foreign content providers.

It said the India can oversee the programming content, if it so desires, through its licensed entities like cable operators or direct-to-home providers without requiring them to open office in the country.

"The United States continues to raise this issue with the Indian Government and the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting," an official said.

In November 2005, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting had issued a 'Downlink Policy' which applies to international content providers wanting to downlink programming to India. Despite opposition from the global firms, the ministry ruled out any change in the policy in February this year asking them to amend their agreements with the Indian customers making the tax liabilities retrospective in nature from November 11, 2005.

This has upset the US which has started exerting pressure on the government to change the policy, the official said.

DISH Network has uplinked a channel TV9 (Telegu) Ch. 807 on July 23 2008.

From today DTV has removed DDINDIA from the guide.............nina

Were not the only ones in the United States. DD India was shut down in United Kingdom last month. DD India is available only in their country. Read on:

June 18, 2008

India's state broadcaster DD India's foray into the UK market seems to be shortlived after the channel was removed from the Sky Digital EPG.

DD India Debuted on Sky Digital Satellite on January 30, 2007.

When contacted Rayat TV, who run the channel here, denied rumours of closure and instead wanted to reinforce the message to viewers via BizAsia UK that DD India will be returning on air after a four-week span. While a reason behind the EPG removal wasn't explained, our source did say that the channel was undergoing a management restructure and was also in the midst of revamping the UK recorded shows.

Some in the industry are little sceptical about today's developments as until today, the channel's EPG was displaying "programmes not available" message on the EPG banner, since last weekend. Also, recently DD had sold its News EPG slot to 9X.

DD India has vowed to return next month, whether it does is a completely different take. Before removal, the channel was on EPG 833.

As always, keep it with us for the very latest on developments on DD India.

No, none of the new international channels are coming to 61.5° or 148°. DISH Network has moved the internationals to 118.7°. They already eliminated the SuperDISH 121°.

Starting this year the DISH satellites are 61.5°, 72° and 77° are Eastern arc, 110° 119° and 129° are Western Arc and 118.7° the new International Arc.

Some that remain the 148° for the West feeds for Sony, SET Max, Sahara One and TV Asia. Possible rumor is that is coming to 118.7° in the near future.

NDTV Imagine and 9X should be coming in 2009. 9X is a free channel. Although, mostly favorites 9XM is beating out MTV India and Channel V in the ratings.

I've heard it from some ppl that DISH Network subscribers in the Eastern seaboard are having problems pointing to 118.7°. I have no clue as why 61.5° is available. Migration to the new International Arc is slow. Keep checking the DISH Uplink forum for surprises.

I don't think 9x is coming to US at all. News on the block is that this channel is doing so bad (rating wise) that it will be closing doors pretty soon. Investors are already pulling money out of this channel and it's parent company.

NDTV Imagine will sign with Directv instead of Dish.

UTV Movies is coming to DirecTV! We get see the Shahrukh Khan and his Don movies? Too bad this movie never shows up on any of the Zee, Sony, Sahara or STAR Channels.

9xM is doing better than the MTV, Channel [V] and 9x. 9x going out of business is a long shot since it is Free-to-Air channel. I don't see NDTV Imagine coming on DISH Network either. Although, DISH promised to reach 45 international channels by 2009.

DirecTV and DISH Network should focus on eliminating News channels. I see IBN7, CNN/IBN, NDTV, Times Now and STAR News did a lot better coverage on the Mumbai siege. I don't rely on Aaj Tak and Headlines Today. Some unreliable fake news there.

I live in a Comcast service area where there are a lot of South Asian, Indian Americans. Comcast here only offers Bollywood on Demand. However, there are a number of Comcast systems [including the Comcast in Baltimore] that carries both Zee TV and TV Asia. In Baltimore, there is a smaller South Asian population. It never made sense to me. Verizon Fios carries TV Asia pretty much universally where they service, but TV Asia isn't a great channel.

I currently subscribe to Dish Network and take just two channels, Zee and Sahara One, though Zee is watched 90% of the time. Sahara One's audio is awful. SONY Ent. also - bad video/audio. I really just want Zee, but Dish requires two, although recently they now permit Zee and Star Plus, for $24.99. And, I'm considering dropping Sahara for Star Plus, but I'm waiting...as the $5 downgrade fee on Dish gets to be a PITA, so I'm going to wait and may drop multiple things at once.

Regarding DirecTV,
I noticed they have now included Aastha Television in the Hindi Direct package:
Now: [8 channels]
http://www.directv.com/DTVAPP/global/contentPage.jsp?assetId=P4710114

Before: [7 channels]
http://www.directv.com/DTVAPP/packProg/channelChart2.jsp?assetId=1200035

It used to be alacarte only:
http://www.dbstalk.com/showthread.php?t=36163&highlight=Aastha

I wonder for customers that paid for both before, if DirecTV is still charging alacarte for Aastha?!

I'm guessing DirecTV was seeing customers opt for Dish now that Dish has picked up the Star channels, and they are trying to please customers, as it was always an unpopular...putting Aastha not in the package. But why not strike a deal for the popular Zee channels?? I'm wondering if Dish has signed a sat exclusive.

I actually had DirecTV for a short while, but didn't like the bundling, where Aastha would be another expense.

Now, I'm considering dropping Dish and going back to DirecTV, since DirecTV has a 8 channel package for $29.99 which includes Aastha.
However, Zee is a fav channel in my house and Dish is providing Cinemax practically free for this year, with my autopay, but its seems both DirecTV and Dish are responding to competition from each other.

On the Directv press release it says the same. However, I have been through their Sahara Filmy launch. It is the only difference between HindiDirect I and II. Sahara Filmy was launched as a free preview and then a new tier was created. FIlmy is not worth the money being charged.

If you go from Zee+Sahara to Zee+Star, you should not get any downgrade fee, since you are not downgrading, but are staying at the same price point. You can do this via phone and they should not charge a fee.

You may want to look at the Hindi Elite which is Sony/Zee/Star One/Star Plus together as well.

For Dish customers, looks like it. I suspect it may take a few more weeks to launch as they are likely testing signal these upcoming weeks.

Even if a channel is FTA in India or even in the US using a FTA dish, Dish usually charges for the channel or adds it only to its higher priced packages. Dish definitely needs more quality music channels I agree, but looks like there is nothing being offered.

They do charge a fee even if its a "sidegrade", atleast from my numerous experiences with Dish. I was charged switching in the past, and don't want to be told by a CSR nothing about it, and then find it on the bill.

On another note, Dish appears to be phasing out these combos:
Zee+TV Asia (Dish's first Hindi package, by the way)
Zee+Sahara One
TV Asia+Sahara One,
Zee+TV Asia+SET [$34.99]..

and now, from the website, its simplified
to just Zee+SONY, Zee+Star as the "pick any twos", and then its Hindi Elite.

Ok, can you tell me what's the purpose of this point of TV Asia? Edison, NJ based newscasts? Dish has a lot of channels but the pricing brackets don't make sense and some channels are weak. Like I'd think a Guju family would rather have the option of taking Zee and Zee Gujurati together, than 2 Guju channels only plus another 2 Hindi channels to top off at close to $50. Ditto with Punjabi.

TV Asia-It started as the first South Asian cable / satellite network for those in America wanting some sort of TV from India, but its outlived its purpose with channels/programming coming directly from the networks in India. Dunno. Their guide seems to show the same things that it showed 5 years ago. Don't watch it.

Anyways, Fios TV recently added Zee TV and SONY Entertainment. They sell now Zee TV, SONY and TV Asia for $14.99/mo. Compare to Dish that was charging $34.99/mo for those three not too long ago, and some customers maybe still paying that. Dish just got greedy some years back when they were the only game in town, and now they're having it harder to lower prices (because they still have a base that's fine with the price), so they are trying to add more channels to increase value.

NDTV Imagine is now a DISH Network exclusive channel. Latest news is this channel is broadcasting on January 21, pending the downlink. NDTV Imagine broadcast is likely 10 1/2 hours delayed from India's live feed. Conflicting reports are channel is maybe NDTV 24x7, NDTV 24x7 is a exclusive to DirecTV. The source given on Christmas Eve proves to be NDTV Imagine.

You might receive a newsletter about CricketTicket 2009 which is $299. You may choose any of the 8 tours listed. Indian Premier League is $99, ICC T20 World Championships is $79 and Champions League T20 is $79. Follow this link: http://www.dbstalk.com/showthread.php?t=149881.

uTv Movies should be available on DirecTV WorldDirect Channel 2009 Satellite 95° by Lohri week.

Any idea on when Direct TV will start uTv Movies? As usual the CSRs have no idea about this channel.

DISH Network is showing SAB TV FREE Preview on Channel 575 Satellites 118.7° and 61.5°. NDTV channel (possibly Imagine or 24x7) is coming to channel 574. uTv Movies premiered in February 2008 in India. I don't see any new movies yet. uTv Movies coming to DirecTV may have been monitored for bugs and glitches.

When I called them about this, they mentioned that as of right now they are not carrying this channel and in the near future they might. But before that happens it will updated on their website.

and

when i mentioned that i see it in my dishnetwork programming guide, the csr had to go and ask the higher authority, and it was still the same reply.

I was told all the above and when I mentioned that I could see it on the guide they transfferred me to techical support and he said he would ping the receivers. And there ...........maybe it will launch at 8p.m. since the guide is showing all the upcoming shows from 8.p.m onwards. Before 8.pm. it shows as off air......

I think Dish Network CSRs need to be in sync with what they communicate. I spoke to tech support as well. Anyways, let's wait till 8pm.

By the way, are they showing anything right now?

Yeah in many cases that i have come across, most of the time Dish Network CSR's haven't been able to provide me with the answers I was looking for.

Showing previews all day and finally showing up at 8PM ET. NDTV Imagine says it's only available in the Hindi Mega Pack. JKnight try to call them and remove and add the Mega Pack and see if channel 574 shows up. You would need a 118.7 or 61.5 satellite.

All you need to tell Dish Network is that, Send Your Receiver a Signal and there you go..you should be all set.

Programs are not that exciting except, Farhan's Oye Its Friday .....Colors is the new channel that is most exciting but lets see..when US subscribers can get it...

Actually the sending receiver signal didn't work, but when i mentioned about removing and readding the package, then it worked.

I called directv last night and the CSR says no definte date available for its launch.

I only hope Directv gets COLORS and UTV I (business channel) too after getting the exclusive coverage for ICC cricket tournaments like Champions trophy 20-20 world cup.
