If your definition of HD-Lite is anything below 1080P, then I have not seen where the new channels will be 1080P.

If your definition of HD-Lite is anything below 1080P, then I have not seen where the new channels will be 1080P.
I thought HD-lite was clearly defined as 1280 by 10xx and not the full 1920 x 12xx. I know that 1080P is not realistic. I just want the same HD quality I'm getting with my local cable company.
well, then your local cable company is probably 1080i HD lite also. HD-Lite is 1080i, but without the FULL bandwidth.
It's not that I'm greedy it's just that money is tight at the moment and it's hard to justify the expense right now. I just wanted to share my experience with other users in the forum. I've been paying DirecTV over $90 a month over the last year with 5 receivers and just HBO. I'm not at all impressed with the R15 either which is another reason why I passed. If it was still TiVo I would probably jump in.
Can anyone tell me if the new channels are full HD or are they HD-lite?
Nobody knows that answer except D*. But folks have said that the MPEG4 LIL's look just as good as OTA. If you don't have any HD now remember that there will also be a $9.99/month HD access chare if you add an HD receiver.

Thanks. I'm not looking to get into a debate about what is HD-lite. I'm just looking to know if the resolution is the same as the rest of the national HD feeds, or is it the same resolution as the DirecTV locals?

I can understand this since the 19.95 also obligates you to another two years of programming commitment.
However, that is a decent deal.

Sure. I just remember the last time I thought the R10 was a great deal for free with a 2 year commitment, and I've regretted that deal for like the last year. I don't even use my R10 anymore and my two year commitment is up next month. Anything can happen in two years and I hate being locked in to one company. I sure wish Time Warner could tell me what HD channels they have coming!

I called and complained about not being able to get MPEG4 with my current dish and receiver (Zenith SAT 520), and they offered me an H20. I said I wanted to retire a S2 Dtivo (Hughes HDVR2) also, so they made it an HR20, for 19.99 S&H, and a slimline dish. Throw in $50 off Superfan, and it was a good day.

Update: Got on the local list for a earlier appointment and they did the install yesterday. So far so good; getting used to the HR20. Not real happy about the 30sec slip and play bar persistence, but not bad really. I probably just need some time with it so I can get "retrained".
Thats great! How did you get on the local list for the earlier appointment?

Notes:
You should be able to keep your old receiver and get an HR20 for no more than $199. Many are getting their new HR20's for just the shipping cost of $19.
The deal you will get depends on your your "Hearts" rating that factors in payment history, automatic payments, protection plan, tenure, current hardware, when your commitment renews, sports packages, etc. There is no such thing as an "A List," just 1, 3, or 5 Hearts. If you are 5 Hearts, you have the winning hand.
Upgrading to the HR20:
1. Check out the competition. Print out the offers from Comcast, DISH, etc.
2. Call DIRECTV at 800-531-5000. At the voice prompt say "Cancel" to go directly to Retention.
3. Be polite. Tell them you want to stay with DIRECTV. Repeat their name & write it down. Ask them how many "Hearts" you are.
4. Ask if you can upgrade to the HR20 for the $19 shipping? Tell the competing offers if needed.
5. See if you can get any months of free HD and Showtime. You may have to call more than once.
6. Make sure you get a morning installation for timeliness and to have extra equipment on hand.
7. Before you hang up, confirm that your work order is for:
DIRECTV HD DVR (Expanded HD Prog. Capable)
Standard Professional Install that will include:
- New RG6 cabling and connectors (up to 125' x 4 as needed)
- Zinwell 6x8 Multiswitch (if needed)
DIRECTV 5-LNB Multi-Satellite Dish (if dish upgrade needed)
Your date and price
- Craig
This worked like a charm. I was able to get the upgrade from a HR10-250 to the HR20. They aren't going to charge me a thing. In fact, I asked for and recieved one free year of HD programming.:D :D :D :D :D :D

Now that I think of it, I may have emailed them Sunday, and not heard until Thursday. I too was wondering. You're sure you gave them the correct phone # and account # in the HTML form, correct?

Pretty sure. I was logged into my account when I did it. I sent a reply this morning to their e-mail that said they'd get back to me in 48 hours about not having been contacted and they responded to that by e-mail about two hours later. They apologized and said they were incredibly busy. I bet. If they got CSR's like I did then they are probably very busy indeed.

Worked incredible for me as well.
Got:

- 1 year of HD channels for free
- No extension of my current contract

I had a very long saga with getting a new HR20. After fighting with CSR and even having a very bruising conversation about when my commitment would end, I was getting nowhere. They kept putting me on hold for extended periods of time and told me that because I had previously been given an essentially free HR20 a new one would cost me $299 (although I was occasionally to get it down a bit by negotiating programming credit).
Finally, my wife called. She tried with CSR and got nowhere and asked to be transferred to customer retention. She was put on hold and then said, "look, we're good customers and know you have discretion to give us an HR20 for $19.95. Our $1000 directivo is now obsolete. I want a new HR20 for $19.95," to which the person said, "ok."
First available install was October 9, unfortunately.

I can only imagine when the new HD channels launch, that installs will get pushed back even more. My install is taking place as we speak, but its been 3 weeks to get an install on a saturday! Thats pretty crazy. Miami must be a popular place for installs; though I got 700s instead of 100s which I find a bit odd.

The best I could get is $19.95 for the HR20 with free install and NO programming credits. I think I'll pass for now even though the number of new HD Channels does tempt me a little bit.
WHAT??!! are you serious??!?! i would have taken one-tenth of a second to say YES!!! I'd try to call back and grab it since it should still be in the notes for your account.

I have one HR20, one H20, and one SD TIVO . I am a 10 year customer with ST and HD SF. I called retention yesterday to ask what deal they could give me to upgrade my SD TIVO to an HR20. The best he would do is $99 and was willing to let me disconnect without offering anything else. I can get that on the D* web site just by going to the 'upgrade equipment' section. I am going to call tomorrow and try again. With 10,000 CSR reps its just a matter of trial and error until I get the $20 deal. I deserve it. I have paid them a lot of money for a long time.
I posted this earlier this week. I went back and noticed that my HR20 ordered from the web site under my account login in the 'upgrade equipment' section had not been shipped. However I had an order number and a price of $99 including S&H. I emailed customer service for a status update and the response was:
Thanks for writing about your HR20 shipment. I just wanted to let you know that we received your email and I have forwarded it to a specialist who will research your email and follow up with you within the next 24 hours. For immediate assistance, please call us at 1-800-531-5000.
At 4 pm today the 24 hours expires.
I am going to try the number above. Maybe it is quicker to get to a CSR that way.

I have a friend today that has been calling D*. He will be a new customer and wants a HR20 for no more than 19.99. And a H20 for free and 2 SD boxes for free. HE even told him he had no problem signing up for NFL package and a year commitment. They keep telling him 99.99 for the HR 20. Any ideas to help???
PS is the H20 the only non -DVR mpeg 4 HD receiver they have now? Our Hd locals are in Mpeg 4

Okay, I decided to put away my Tivo bias, and give the HR20 a try. Open mind, and all that :)
We couldn't get 2 free HR20s to replace the DTivos (both at $1K, dammit) and I wouldn't pony up the $99 for a second one, so we're only getting 1 to try. If we like it, we'll try for another free one in a few months (weeks?)
Good news is we called today (Sept 1) and got an install for Sept 4!!! Either we really live in the sticks, or we live in an area that has an overabundance of D* installers :)
Thanks for all the tips,

WOW!!!
Finally my persistence paid off tonight with a DTV CSR.
I called in and said that I was leaving if they did not earn my continued support. I said my family enjoyed football, movies and wanted them in hi-def. My representative then offered me the motherlode, IMO.
Details:
HD-DVR - no charge
new 5 LNB dish - no charge
$10 off our monthly bill for 12 months
no DVR service charge for 12 months
HBO free for 12 months
Starz free for 12 months
Sunday Ticket, including Superfan for $100, split over 4 months billing
and, of course, free installation.
Then I asked what my upfront charge was going to be for all of this and he said NOTHING! I didn't even have to pay shipping for the receiver. My installation is scheduled for next Thursday afternoon. I'm still in shock. I tried in June to get the receiver upgrade, and was shot down repeatedly at $200 out of pocket. I couldn't be more thrilled. Glad I finally got the right guy at the right time! Best of luck to the rest of you. Clearly, patience is a virtue in searching for the best deal available...

Called today and got my HR10-250 replaced for free. No shipping or other charges. I will have to give them my HR10 in exchange for the HR20 but that doesn't bother me too much. CSR first offered it for $299 then came back about 15 minutes later with the free offer. I didn't have to make any cancellation threats either. Surprised me considering I am not always on time with my bill but I do subscribe to Sunday Ticket. Maybe that helped.

With only one call, I am getting a free HR20, free Dish install, and free HD for 12mo. I did not ask about HBO/Showtime, but did ask about SuperFan and was told he could not give it to me for free.:nono2: I will try emailing like Browningt since I feel if you have NFLST and the HD package, you should be able to get NFLST in HD. I don't need the other extras of SF.

After several failed attempts to get two more HR20's (already have 1) at a significant discount I called DTV tonight. I got two for a total of $99, including shipping.
Good thing I called...I have two sitting in my utility room that I purchased for $269 a piece from Costco that I was planning on installing later tonight!

More than likely they will come w/ the installer. They ship to the installer and they bring it with them on the day of the install.
Just thought I would post my experience.
I called to order NFL Sunday Ticket and was offered the HR20 for free. No shipping and handling charges. Did not beg and did not threaten. It was basically offered to me to replace a standard def non-dvr receiver (sorry, not real familiar with model numbers). I don't think I was talking to retention. I sent them an email asking about the Sunday ticket and like others have posted, I was sent a special telephone number with a four digit PIN. I called the number and only spoke to one person.
As others have reported, I do not have an install date yet. They will call within 72 hours. I have had installers out to my house several times for various reasons and this is the first time I have had to wait for an install date (Indianapolis area). Guess there really is quite a demand for installs lately. :)
Just for reference, I have been a subscriber since Dec 2005. I hardly ever buy PPV movies, up until now the only extras on my account are HBO and Cinemax. I usually do not get my bill paid on time (just lazy :) ) although my service has never been turned off for non-payment. So....you CAN get good deals even if you are an average subscriber who has only had service for a short period of time.
One other interesting note, the person I spoke to said I was not under contract but back in Feb of this year I called in and received a free non-DVR HD receiver. I was told that I had to agree to a 2 year commitment in order to obtain the new receiver. Guess they changed their mind or else forgot to note it as such in my account. Anyway, I did not have to agree to a 2 year commitment with my latest acquisition so I guess I am still not under contract.

OK. Here is the best deal I have been able to squeeze out of D* in several calls over the past few days. I currently own an HR10-250 and a couple of standard receivers and I have no commitment.
* 1 HR20 free of charge
* 1 HR20 for 99.00 + 19.95 shipping
* free install of new 5LNB dish
* no programming credits
* 2 year commitment
I haven't taken the deal yet. I asked them to notate my account of the offer. Here's my question... I heard that there is an HR21 coming out this fall with enhanced capabilities. Do I risk being offerred good deals on the HR21 when it comes out by going with two HR20's now? Just curious of your opinions.

I got that same deal after my 3rd call. I didn't take the deal, either, and had them note it on my account as well. On my 4th call, I was offered a free HR20, $10 off for a year, and free installation. I really wanted 2 HR20's, but took the deal after the CSR insisted she couldn't put 2 on the order, even tho a 2nd one for $99 was in my notes.
When you do finally get the deal you're happy with, make sure you check your order...they charged me $199 for my 'free' HR20, and had no programming credits for my account. A quick call to DirecTV got it all straightened out, but you gotta check up on them.

3 HR20's, a new dish, and a new multiswitch all installed today. All working. No charge, and I just checked with DTV - all listed as I own them and no new commitment.
I spoke with the "cancel service" people last week and they offered this deal without me even asking for it...
Only bummer is that one of my rooms only has two cables running to it, so no more OTA reception in that room since you can no longer diplex OTA and satellite over one wire.

Thanks guys. I appreciate the posts. I'll call again later this week and see if I can't better the deal. I'm OK with paying 99 for my 2nd DVR. But I really don't want a new 2-year commitment if I can avoid it. Does anyone have the direct line to customer retention?

Just got off the phone with retention. Easy as heck. Just told them the competing offer from E* he immediatley reviewed my account. Only been a customer for a little over 1 year. He came back with 19.95 for shipping. HBO, Starz, Cinemax free for 3 months. I am relocating my current R-15 to the bedroom. That easy. did have to commit for 2 more years though. But no biggie. Did ask about free HD but he said he was unable to do that.
THANK YOU Rico (CSR)
You got better than I did and I've been with D* for 10 years. I'm not complaining though, earlier today I got an HR-20 for the 19.95 S&H. Back in April I got the H-20 for free with 4 months free HD programming.

just wanted to thank all of you here for the great postings on how to get upgraded and not empty my bank account..... i got lucky and got all set up after my first call..im a 9 year customer with total choice/hbo/starz/no sports.and no contract currently.1 sd tivo and an old sony 2nd line....i called regular customer service..i was real nice and didnt threaten to leave .told them i wanted to upgrade my equipment but getting other offers but wanting to stay if they could match the other companies...so they transfer me to retention..i start out by telling her everything that i wanted.{or hoped i can get}...2 free hr20s ..1 year free hd and dvr service..free install, dish and multiswitch..and heres what i got...
first she offers me the sunday ticket for 69.99 per month that also comes with both free premier and dvr service for 4 months...{so it isnt for new customers only}
then i get 1 free hr20 for 19.95 shipping...she wouldnt give a 2nd though..il call back in 6 months or longer for that one...
i tried to get 1 free year hd but she gave me 6 months...
then she says how about the superfan too..ok
then she says ill give you the nascar pass also..ok{probably wont watch this too much}
also got the free install, free slimline dish and zinwell multiswitch...
i did have to sign a 2 year commitment ..
that sunday ticket deal is a great offer if you can get it.....she says after 4 months i can go back to any sub over total choice plus...she did mention at the beginning about me being a long term customer so im sure that helped a bit....
then she sets the install up for the next day....so im all set up now..make sure your home when the installer is there and help him out and watch how hes doing everything and if you dont agree with what hes telling you then ask for him to call his supervisor......i helped my guy for 6 1/2 hours and had several differences of opinoins to work out with him but in the end ive got the best signal strength ive ever had....i think its all about who you get connected to in retention...if you dont like what your being offered then try again later...personally i have better luck with the female agents....... ..good luck...

Finally got the call Saturday, 9/1, no hassle, no arguments got everything for $0. I asked him why we had to go through hassle to get this and his answer was that the new satellites cost a lot of money. I told him the reason they are going to Mpeg4 was to save money by needing fewer satellites and now they trying to squeeze more from us. The fact that they have no choice but to go HD seems to escapes them.

I have a second HR20 on order. But as many of you have found out they will not ship it. It has to be 'installed' even though I already have an At9 dish and it is replacing an SD Tivo. All I have to do is plug it in and put the bBand convertors on it. My 'install' is 30 days from now.
To get around the extended 'install' date of a second HR20 has anyone tried calling and saying that their existing HR20 is bad and requesting a replacement? Then when the replacement shows up just put it in service, send back a different receiver, and cancel the install?

Just called and finally got a deal that I could live with (4th try). Thanks for all of the posts. The advice I got on this site was absolutely instrumental in helping me make a decision. Here's the (OK) deal I got:
* Free HR20 (asked for 2nd HR20 for 99 but he would only go for 199)
* HD service free for 1 year
* HBO/Cinemax free for 3 months (asked for 6 months)
* Free installation on new 5LNB dish, wiring, multiswitch
Got this deal using the "I'm thinking of switching to Dish" method (quoting Dish's HD offering from their website). Oh yeah... and I had to make a new 2 year commitment. I like D* so this is not a huge problem for me. But I just hate commiting to anything for two years.
Here's the best offer I received:
1 HR20 - free, no shipping
1H20 - $99
6 months free HD
He would not budge on giving me a second HR20 at a discounted price, so I just had him notate my account. Any advice on what tactic I should use when I call back to try and get a second HR20 for $99?

Were all three HR20's on one order, or did they have to put them on multiple orders? I also would like to get more than one (free+$$). I have an H10 and a HR10-250 that needs upgrading. I'm hoping that having two outdated HD boxes will make it easier, but would like to be prepared if they say they can only do one free or discounted. I have a year left on my contract but with paying >$150 a month, I would actually save money this month if I paid the early termination fee. I just wouldn't have any T.V. :eek2:

I was told by a CSR in customer retention that the system would only allow them to give 1 HR20 for free/shipping only every 6 months. I heard another person posting on dbstalk that they were charged, and credited for the second unit to get around this. I just marked down the date I received my HR20 and an going to call back when my six months are up.

I own both my HR10-250s and will keep them in use but ordered 2 hr20s.....so did I get a good deal and does returning leased HR10-250s cause one to get a better deal?
got 2 HR20s for 99 bucks each + tax and shipping. 234.00 total
They haven't been installed yet, I think i'm scheduled for the 10th. Is it too late for me? OR....have I already got the best deal for an owner and not a leasee?

I just got off the phone with retention, I stumbled across this forum and decided to give it a try. My first try got me this:
Upgrade my HR10-250 and my standard def Tivo to HR20's
Free Superfan
Free HD for a year
$10 bill credit for a year
HBO/SHOW/CINEMAX free for 6 months
Free Dish Upgrade
I am pretty happy I tried the retention thing again. I remember a year or two ago there was a direct number for retention and that is how I got the HR10 in the first place.
This time I just told them I was very unhappy with their customer service which they had records that I called and they verified my calls. The kind lady asked me what I had concerns about so I mentioned Superfan, free movie channels, and the full system upgrade. She threw in the free HD and $10 bill credit. I am glad I found this forum. Thanks fellas.

Need some help. I have had DTV for about 4 years now I have my whole house plugged in around 17 receivers .1 hr20 DVR and a regular HD receiver and the rest are regular receivers I want them to upgrade me to the newer style receivers and I'm having a problem with them. my subscription is over this weekend and I'm thinking of canceling. I don't see why I need to spend more money to upgrade to HD receivers They gave me an the hr20 DVR last year ( I also went to best buy and bought a non DVR one for 99.00 ) They said ( DTV) the would give me it for free if I signed a extension for a year and I told them no I will wait till my contract is expired and have you offer me more , the women laughed and told me I was very wise to do that ) So I asked for another this year (DVR)and I would pay half for the second one and no go.any help would be greatly appreciated, Football means alot....... but not enough to hold my feet in the fire.
Thanks
Not a very happy camper now with DTV

You have more receivers than anyone else I have ever heard of. Sports bars do not have that many receivers!
Again, here are the steps others have been using that seem to get the best deals:
Getting a Good Deal on an HR20 (http://www.dbstalk.com/showthread.php?p=839938#post839938)
Most importantly, do not make threats. But with 17 receviers and all of your packages, you have to be spending $300 per month.
I bet that they will work with you!

I just called, they offered me:
HR20, free of charge
$10 credit for 6 months
Free installation on new 5LNB dish, wiring, multiswitch
no programming credits (I asked).
If I want a 2nd receiver it would cost $199, or $99 for H20.
I didn't take the deal because a lot of you have done better. I'll call back in a few days to see what happens.

I just switched from comcast to directv, I had directv over 2 years ago and they gave me 4 premium channels free for 3 months and $10 off for a year.
I still had to pay $199 for the hddvr plus shipping...

Last night I upgraded my old Sony SD DVR to an HR20 for a great price. I can keep my T60 and relocate it.
I followed these steps compiled from the tips others have given:

Were you talking with a Retention CSR or a Tier I CSR? Tier I CSR's have less latitude.
Plus every CSR's flexibility is based on your individual Hearts rating. So yes, someone who has not asked for much might not post here much either and may be able to ask for a better deal.

I think I'm in trouble then. I've gotten a free R15 and now a $19 HR20. I'll be pushing my luck if I try to finagle another HR20 for $19 when I upgrade the other TV to HD. :) Maybe the fact that the R15 is starting to experience freezes and hiccups when playing back some recorded programs will help me out in that regard, though.

I am a 12 year Directv subscriber, I've spent $15,000+ with them over the years. I've never received any equipment for free, no installation, nothing. I've purchased at least 4 dishes and 8 or so receivers over the years.
I really want an HR20 and taking the tips here decided to try to get one for just the cost of shipping, since that appears to be possible. Anyway, no dice. I was very nice, laid out my case to the CSR and then to retention. The best they could do was a $100 credit for the unit, and $60 credit for programming, meaning I would still be paying $150+.
I asked how many hearts I was, he said 4 though I don't see how I could not be a 5 with max programming and perfect payment record, he thought I did not have enough receivers to be a 5. Also, retention guy said that there is a freeze on HR20's and they have blocked him from giving them away by modifying the software he uses. The folks I dealt with were nice enough but essentially I struck out. It irritates me watching them give away equipment to new subscribers, giving away Superfan , all this stuff I have always had to pay for and still, knowing that to them it's just my tough luck.

Well, in my case, it's because I never had a need to look for a HD message board before I decided to upgrade. I just ordered my HDTV. I was just looking for info on deals and came across this board. I posted my offer just so others could compare. It's probably the same situation for a lot of the new posters.
For background- I've been with Directv for almost four years. I've never asked for anything before, have automatic payment, 1 dtv tivo receiver and 3 regular. I don't have any movie channels or NFL ST.

Your right because, this is hogwash. I have every-room in my house with a receiver from direct TV I have been a loyal customer I also had cable and let them go. But now that DTV wants me to spend Mucho $$$$$ to upgrade my receivers to there HD receivers there crazy, I don't have to do that with cable. DTV is a blatant RIP off and heed my warning DTV does not take care for its loyal customers. I have spent much time calling and calling, I have not time in my busy day ( nor does anyone who is in business ) to waste on getting a deal to watch TV. That's what this is I'm taking time out of my busy day to re-subscribe so I can get Television . Are you kidding me!!!! I'm spending over $300 a month for 12 months to a company that is giving me the runaround . Who Is the bigger fool ( ME !!:nono2: )

Just called for a second time to get a 2nd HR20 and the CSR initially said they could not do anything less than $299 plus shipping. After talking for a while he was able to split the $299 into 3 payments and waive 2 of them still adding in the $19.95 shipping charge. I went for it as I hate waiting on hold. Installation scheduled for next Wednesday which I thought was very soon.

In my area I have both Philly and NYC. locals so No problem to watch my beloved Cowboys. DTV will be a thing of the past by the end of today. If I need to spend all night here at work and talk to these companies to get the best deal. Don't be fooled the only reason why DTV is worth anything is that they have the NFL Sunday Ticket and just so you realize if you subscribe to that or not, If you have DTV YOU ARE PAYING FOR IT !!!!

Just called thru retention, got offered an HR-20 for $19.95 plus free Superfan and 6 months of HD credit. I already had NFLST, so I took the deal. Installation is 1 week from today, not too bad. I really had to push them to get free SF, the rest they offered right off the bat.
Thanks to the forum for letting me know what to ask for.
As a point of reference, I have been with them for 10 years, $55 monthly plus NFLST, and previously got a DirecTivo for $19.95.

Disagree! I got both my HR 20's for -$1. It was $99 with $100 credit.:D I just had antenna taken off roof and put in corner of yard, through DTV. They put post in ground, concreted it, ran new cables underground, adjusted dish, all for $52.80 SWEET!:D :D :D Been a customer for maybe 3 years.
Long time lurker, short time poster...I just got off the phone with "D" retentions and this is the deal they offered to me:
-HR 20 for free with the 19.95 shipping charge
-Super fan this season for free
-$100 credit on another HR 20 purchased from authorized dealer
I have only been with them this time for 2 years and my contract expires tomorrow. I currently have 5 receivers, with with the highest tier movie package. I was told that I have 4 hearts, but that this is a great deal, because I have only been with them a short period of time. I didn't accept yet, but do you think I should push for a program credit? When should I call back? This forum is invaluable, because last month I called and the held fast on charging me $199 for the HR 20.

I'd suggest trying one more time and tell them that you feel you are a longtime customer but feel you have been treated not so well and are calling to cancel.
They gave me the HR-20 right away. She said something about me being a longtime customer and always paying on time. Duhh, it's hard not to pay on time when the account is set up for automatic payment...
When I *hinted* that I might cancel and go to cable, she would not budge on the $99 for SF. I even asked if there was *anything* she could do to reduce that charge - no joy. Then I said, very nicely, "Well, then I guess I'll just have to do without the football." She asked, very directly and carefully worded, "So if you can't have SF for free you're going to cancel and not get the football games that you've been getting for the past 8 years?" When I said, "That's right," she said, "OK, then I can give you SF for free."
Their directives must not let them offer the best package unless they *believe* that you are about to cancel. Good luck!

If you decide to take the deal (and I would), make sure to call back before 4 PM EDT. At some point after that (maybe it's 5), the phone lines (even Retention) go to an overseas call center, and I found them much more difficult to deal with. Otherwise wait until 9 AM.

I got 3x HR20s, new dish, new multiswitch, and get to keep my 3x HR10-250s (is anbody being asked to give them back?). $297 charge on my bil. $150 immediate credit on my bill. $10 monthly credit for 12 months. 6 months free HBO. That about makes it free for me. Plus they gave me 6 months free Showtime, 6 months free Cinemax, 3 months free Starz. He also "grandfathered" me in on the HD fee so I will never pay an HD monthly fee. That is the only thing that sounds fishy to me as I don't know how they can do that. And I confirmed that I still am grandfathered on my original lifetime Tivo so I pay no DVR fee.
Pretty happy. Obviously have the new two year commitment.
Plan on keeping my HR10-250s up and running until they die.
Wow...I was on with retention for awhile and they would not allow me to receive and additional HR20. They also would not waive the HD fee or any free movie channels. Is this because I have not been with them long enough to merit this consideration? I know that I get all the movie channels right now, because of the package I am currently under.

I currently have a HR10-250 and an old Sony SAT-T60. I just got off the phone with customer retention and was able to get:
2 HR20s for $118.99
6 months free HD ($60 savings)
Free 5LNB dish and install
So, my cost is $60. I'm not greedy and am very happy with that. I'm sure it didn't hurt that I've been with DirectTV for over ten years.

OK I just pulled the trigger and got a 2nd HR-20 for the total price of....... ZERO.
I called, chose cancel, went to Retention, and was very pleasant to the CSR there. I told her I have a big family who's now starting to overrun my only HD-DVR (which is a true statement). I told her I just received my final billing for NFLST, and was concerned that I wouldn't be able to make full use of what it is an EXPENSIVE SERVICE, and would have to consider canceling my NFLST unless there was something she could do to help me out. She came back 10 seconds later and gave me another HR-20 for nothing.
So there's another possible angle. If you have expensive services you might consider canceling because of the cost of the hardware to improve your experience with that expensive service, they may bend to that to keep you buying those services.

No Dice for me, first csr said 299.00 then transferred me to retention and was offered one for 99.00 but could only schedule me for a time when I would be out of town (Sept. 28) so I declined. Second csr wouldn't budge even when I offered to sign up for nfl ticket but she did get me scheduled for my dish upgrade tomorrow, I told her I was offered it for 99.00 but she said it must have been the H-20 not the HR-20, she was a real PITA so I just told her to forget the HR-20.
I called back again and spoke to another retention agent, who prattled on about the avantages of "D" over Dish and local cable...For the most part she was correct and she also refused to provide a second HR20 for free or at a discount, other than purchasing locally and receiving a $100 credit. She also stated that I had until this weekend to cancel NFL, but was adamant about not providing another hd dvr. It burns me, because I called a buddy of mine today and "D" gave him a free HR 20 and the next one for $99.
I called today with my 3rd attempt in 3 weeks and got a deal I was happy with.
I simply stated that I had 2 HR10's that I was told would be updated to support the new channels. Initial response was $299 plus 19.95 shipping on each. I responded that I could get that price at Best Buy. I was placed on hold for a minute and she came back with $99 for each no shipping. I agreed, but as she verified my address she said she saw that she could upgrade my 2 HR10's at no cost, but they would take my HR10's. I said that I paid $900 each for those and she said OK you can keep them.
So 2 HR20's for 0.00 including shipping and I keep the HR10's. :)

Try calling again. Say Cancel at the prompt as the password to get to retention. Never tell them how long you have been a customer or how much you spend or how many receivers you have. This will only hurt you. Stay nice and friendly.
If you think someone is a pain, they were probably already thinking it about you. You don't want the CSR thinking you are a pain. It seems that for those expressing frustration, the answer is no.
Just like in your personal life, win them over with kindness. :)

Got my first HR20 in May for $19.95. Talked about the HR10-250 upgrade we were promised for free. Called tonight to get the second one for the other HDTV. She quoted me $299. I said I was looking to replace an existing receiver with it (Series 2 DTivo) and she said, "Yes, I see that we need to do a replacement in your area, I can replace it at no cost to you." Completely free. Coming out on the 14th!

I followed the posted instructions and am getting an HR-20 installed plus dish and 12 months of free HD on Tuesday for 19.95. I will be payng 6.99/month for the DVR service.
FYI, I already have a Sony SAT60 with lifetime TIVO service that will remain. I have been a subscriber since 2000. Did not ask about my hearts.
I was surprised by a few things, though. The retention CSR told me that the HR20 sells for $749, but they usually sell it to customers for $299. But for that price, you don't actually own the unit - you are leasing it. So in my case, they waived the $299 and I am actually leasing (?) the HR20 for 4.99 - I will not own it. Is that correct?
He also said that the $4.99 charge will replace the $4.99 I am currently paying for one of my extra two tuners. Is THAT right?
They also told me that my lifetime TIVO subscription does not apply to the HR-20. That conflicts with what I have been told in the past, at least 3 times by other CSRs. Is he right, or can I call back and convince them to move the lifetime subscrition to the DVR?
Also, can I sell the SAT60 WITH the lifetime subscription?
One last question, sort of off-topic. Is the signal quality that I can expect from the satellite goin to be the same as I am getting right now OTA? The OTA color is vibrant, and the sound is way crisper than what I currently get on my SAT 60.

This is all true. You can sell the old Sony but not for much. Tivo has a net lost of 146,000 users in the last quarter. They are losing DIRECTV customers the most. Try eBay. I still have my T60 as a backup.
You will love the resolution and color depth of especially the MPEG4 channels.

Just wanted to say thanks to all the info in this thread I was able to upgrade from my (owned) HR10-250 to the HR20 for free (not even the S/H fee) and 12 months of free HD. My only concern is that on my account on the directv website says it is a "Swap Replace HR20 IRD." The word "swap" concerned me since I own (not lease) my HR10 so I called and the first CSR said I would have to pay $400 to keep my receiver which is obviously incorrect so I asked to be transferred to retention where a much more pleasant CSR assured me that I would be able to keep my HR10 since it was indeed not a lease. Anyway, I am just wondering if anyone here had an issue with an installer trying to take your HR10 when they came to install the new one even though you owned the HR10?
**edit** Just saw another thread answering my question! so nevermind!
Well, I just called and got shot down, sort of... I've been a subscriber for about a year, on the Total Choice Plus package (or whatever it is now), with Starz, 5 receivers, HD, and DVR service. Order a few PPV movies here and then and a few big PPV events. Never been late with a payment. I have a HR10-250, a DSR708, and an R15.
The best they would do was $199 plus three months of HBO free. The guy I got was a bit of a jerk from the get-go. Should I just assume I got an uncooperative one and play the CSR roulette game? How long should I wait before I call back? Does it matter if I call right now, seeing as how I just got off the phone?
EDIT - Just tried again and they offered $150 plus HD free for 6mos and 3 months of HBO. Guess that's better, and the free service would offset a bit of the expense of the unit. I asked her if they could do $100 or so, because I would do it then and there, but for $150 I would have to think about it and discuss with the wife... She said $150 was as low as they can go on it. I guess I'll give it a try in the morning before work and see if I can do any better!
Thanks!

Today, called the 8-531-800 number; at prompt, said "cancel" - first CSR (retention? don't know - did not ask) would not go any better than $247 for this:
HR-20 DvR
H-20
5lnb install
6 mo hd credit
4 months free strz.
Used the ploy of having Dish Ad in hand and asking for them to meet it (me: 3 yr cust; contract expired; Total Choice Plus; 3 Lnb; auto pay); said no thanks and politely hung up. She said she would place note in file.
I immediately called another CSR number, said "cancel" and crossed fingers that prior CSR's "note to file" had not been placed into system; evidently, that was the case. I used the same ploy of referring to the current Dish offer (with some exaggeration) and ended up with the above package for $99, and a 9/11 install date.
I'm happy with that.

Thank you Milominderbinder2!!! :joy:
With only one call, I am getting a free HR20, free Dish install, and free HD for 12mo. I did not ask about HBO/Showtime, but did ask about SuperFan and was told he could not give it to me for free.:nono2: I will try emailing like Browningt since I feel if you have NFLST and the HD package, you should be able to get NFLST in HD. I don't need the other extras of SF.
Well, my email didn't do any good for SF...
My install was scheduled for the 20th and I looked tonight to see if there was a cancelation so that I could get an earlier install. There was one available on Saturday, but the site keep giving me an error and told me to call. I called and they were able to give me that date. He asked if there was anything else he could do for me and I told him about SF. He said he would charge me, but then credit me back the amount. :hurah:

A few days ago I called to cancel DTV. They wanted to know why. My story was that prices keep going up (NFL Sunday ticket) and that one of my receivers was now out of date (HR10). I just said it wasn't worth it anymore to keep the service.
DTV went into full negotiation mode.
At first they offered an additional HR20 for $199 (I already had one). Then after saying no they reduced it to $99 dollars. After saying no again they reduced it to $49 dollars. Again, I turned them down.
The Retention CSR put me on hold then came back with a free HR20 + Super Fan for basically $19.99. If I agreed to add it they would credit my account and basically I would pay the difference of $19.99. They did ask me to make a 2 years commitment but I wasn't really leaving anyway.
Pretty Sweet deal. :joy:

- CraigMilo, question about the install. I currently have 2 lines from my multiswitch ready and active for an HR20, already have the 5 lnb dish, do they really need to send an installer? At this point i just dont see the need since my setup should be exactly what they want.
All i want to do is:
-Trade my H20 in and hopefully get a HR20 for under 50 bucks.
-Install it myself, my service address is different from my true residence. (its only 60 miles off but allows me to watch Flyers games on the Center Ice Ticket)

About the best you'd be able to do is to get them to put a credit on your account and buy one at Best Buy or someplace like that. I have no idea if they'd do that for an HR20, but that's what they did for me a couple of years back with an R15.
I'd try giving them a song and dance about how you don't want to wait a month to get it, and that it'd be silly to send somebody out since all the wiring is in place, blah blah blah.
Whats the trick for a fairly new (< 1 month) to get a second HR20? I couldn't get them to give me a second one when I set up service. Should I still go through retentions? I'm not expecting the kind of deals that you guys are getting, but something a little better than $299 would be nice.

You won't get one cheap so soon. I think there is a rule like 6 mos or something. It's been since DEC 2006 since I got my first HR20 ( free) 2nd one cost me $20.

$12.50 per month for every month still on contract.
Just got off the phone, I got a HR-20 and install for no charge whatsoever. No free programming packages, I didn't even ask. I really wanted 2 receivers, but he told me you can only get 1 every 6 months. He also said that since this is considered "upgrading equipment" I don't have to renew my commitment.
Weird thing is I just checked my order, and it says "replace/swap HR20."
Does that mean the installers are going to expect me to produce an old HR20? Or is that just what they put in to get the price to be zero?
Strange how we get so many different deals.
So in 6 months I guess I can use my lack of commitment to bargain for my 2nd HR-20.

I took the plunge for a third one today .. I'll be replacing my HR10-250 this time. I was able to get the $19.95 (S&H) deal without much quibble and just didn't care to go past that point. I was probably on the phone for a total of 15 minutes.
Received my second HR20 the other day. I got a free one (19.95 s/h) back in december and am replacing my second to last SD Tivo for a total of 3 of these in the house now!
I'll wait another 6 months or so and see if I can get my last SD tivo replaced.
I'm super psyched for the VOD!
I can PROMISE you they signed you up for two years, not matter what they told you. Just about everything you do extends the commitment at this point with Directv.
I did a movers connection and they added a year to my service. Only problem is the installer did not do anything, said he could not install because of trees. I did the install myself with a dish I bought, but after 5 or so calls I finally just gave up and keep the 1 year extra commitment. It just became not worth the hassle, no one would help me, even the retention department. They would promise it was fixed, but when I called back it was the same.
No matter I guess, I would not leave with all this HD coming anyway.
He also said that since this is considered "upgrading equipment" I don't have to renew my commitment.

thanks you all.....especially Milominder...
I just spent 30 minutes on the phone with D* and am walking away with my 2nd HR20 for just $20. And I didn't even realize my committment was up at the end of this month even though I got my initial HR20 just 1 year ago and I took advantage of the Movers Advantage program 4 months ago.
no free HBO but I'm happy even though I have a 2yr committment now.

Well, I specifically asked, and he specifically said, and I quote "since this is considered equipment replacement rather than upgrade you don't have to renew your commitment right now."
I then asked him if I will have to renew my commitment when I ask for a second one, and he said probably.
I really don't think they could renew my commitment when he specifically said he wasn't.
And when I said free I mean they're not even charging shipping, which is the first I've heard of that even though I've been following this thread for awhile.
He did know I don't already have one, I think he put it in the system as a replacement (like I had an HR20 that went bad).

Well, decided to give it a try tonight. I don't have an HDTV yet, but am planning on buying one in November. I do, however, have an HD projector (720p) in the Home Theater, but we use it for DVD's almost exclusively.
I've been torn over the last several months about whether or not to stick with D* or move over to FiOS. After being subscribed to all the FiOS threads at AVS for many months and reading about how terrible their DVR's are and that they get worse with each upgrade, I decided to stick with D*.
I figured if I could get a good deal, I'd take it now and hook up the HR20 to the projector and not only get a chance to play with it for a couple of months, but we'd also be able to watch some HD shows and some HD sports on our 126" screen.
First call:
Free HR20
Free Install
Free 5 LNB Dish
Free Zinwell 6X8 Multi-switch
$19.95 Shipping
Free HD service for 1 year
$10 credit on my bill for 1 year
Free HBO for 6 months
Free Showtime for 6 months
Even with the extra receiver charge and the addition of HD, my monthly bill will be reduced about $20 per month ( I currently have HBO) for the next 6 months and I'll be getting lots of extra stations. After 6 months, my bill will still be about $5 or so cheaper than it is now.
So, even when you add in the $20 shipping charge, I'll be saving $150 over the next year and in addition to my current package I'll have an additional receiver (HR20), HD package and Showtime for 6 months.
Installation is scheduled for September 24th, but I'm going to try and get that moved up since I'm out of town that day.
WooHoo
PS. Forgot to mention a couple of things:
I told them that I was contemplating moving to FIOS (which is true) and wanted to see what D* could offer me.
She also offered me free DVR service for a year, but I'm already lifetime.
I'm a 5 heart customer.

10 year customer, Premier service (whatever you call subscription to every channel), 5 Tivos on my account (2 HR10-250s) and 2 sports subscriptions - perfect payment history.
I want 2 HR20s (as I have 2 Seagate 750s sitting in my office from last weekend's CC sale).
1st try with retention was $99 for the first, $299 for the second. The CSR didn't sound too confident - surprised he was in retention - quickly ended the call.
Called back 30 min later. Offered 1st for free ($19 shipping) and best she could do on the second one was $299 minus free HD for 6 months ($60 off). I mentioned Dish and said I felt I was being punished for being an early adopter and not recieving the benefit of all the new HD. She claimed she had to get her supervisor to approve the 1st one for free and couldn't do any better. She noted my account.
This still isn't good enough. I just need to get the right CSR. When I bought my first HR10 I talked with a nice as hell guy whom I perceived to be "flirting" with me. Hey we were on the phone, so I flirted back and he damn near gave it to me for free back when they were still $999. My second HR10 was a new mom who I talked to for over an hour (lots of questions about her kid) - she credited my account 3 different ways resulting in $80 out of pocket for that one.
Playing this game is annoying, but I always try to multitask so I am getting something else done.
Hopefully I will update with better news tomorrow...

Yeah, I had to sign up for a 2 year commitment this time around. I wasn't required the last couple of times but I guess I pushed over the limit this time.
I just signed up for new service & took advantage of the $100 rebate on the $299 HDDVR - I want to make sure that DTV is giving me the latest receiver - I've seen posts that discussing HR20-700 and HR20-100. The 700 sounds like it is the newest - is that right?
Also, the CSR I spoke with made it sound like, even though I'm paying $299 for the receiver, I won't own it. Is that true? I questioned her on this, but she got confused, and then confused me.

NiteOwl,
Are you replacing you HR-10's with HR20's? If so, they should not charge you more than $99 each. I recently called and received a new HR-20 for free (+ S&H). I then had them replace my HR-10, which was starting to have freeze-up issues. They also gave me the 2nd HR20 for free since it was a replacement for a defective receiver. Note, that I did this on separate calls about 1 week apart. The technical support rep didn't really even want to trouble shoot the HR-10. He just asked if they could send me out a replacement HR20, which is what I wanted anyway. They also didn't want the HR-10 back.

After an hour and half on the phone from 9:00 am.
Got an Hr20 for free
year of HD for free
and the 120.00 off my subscription plan.
super fan with the NFFST at 129.00-100 off
and then tried to be greedy and get 2 additional hr10's
No dice they would have but they wanted to take away my free HD and $120.00
Didn't make sense when I could go to best buy and get them there for $99 each.
So I relented and took the deal. Now I heard that costco has a major deal on the hr20 so if you have a membership go get one or 2
Then I asked about hearts wouldn't tell me.
Asked about titanium package and he said "thats for Dr. and race car drivers and yada yada .. after insulting me " Excuse me but you dont know what I do for a living I may be very interested in that package." The salesmen didn't know what to say. thats when I pounced on him. But after realizing I had wasted all morning with this guy I said sign me up. Here is the catch folks. TWO
years. I told him I only had a one year subscription and he said I know but you shouldn't have one I didn't feel like arguing anymore.I said OK but can I cancel if I'm not comfortable later on tonight after thinking about this deal he said yes before installation. So thats the story a 2 year deal hmmmmm.

Just my luck. When I called D* last night, I got a great offer of free HR20, free HD for a year, $10 service credit for 12 months, and 6 mos free HBO. As the guy was making the order, the call dropped on his end. When I called back, their retentions department was closed. So I tried back this morning only to get some disgruntled woman who basically didn't offer anything except 3 months of HD programming free. I declined and called back ten minutes later only to get a different woman that told me the most she could do is what the previous person had 'noted' on my account.
This totally sucks. Anyone here how long those notes stay on there? It sucks that I originally had a great deal and now these last two reps are offering only HD free for 3 months. I'd like to know how long I should wait before calling back.

Well i tried today and got this deal:
HR20- $199.00 - ( split into 2 payments)
i declined and asked to have them put it into the notes so i could 'get higher approval' ( 1.e. the missus  )!!
will call back later and grab it tho
p.s. they also are having a HBO/Cinemax special ( 2 for 1 ) for 3 months! grabbed that also ( well not yet )...
I wanted a second HR20 to add to the SD Tivo ( so i could move it to another room) Getting rid of at least ONE of my D-10's ;)
I was just reading this thread ands since I still have an HR10-250 I decided to call. I explained I have been reading on the internet about people getting new HR 20's for just paying the shipping and the rep replied that he could only sell me one for $299 plus the 19.00 shipping cost unless I threatened to cancel my subscription. I have had the Platinum package for 13 years and had no plans on canceling but said "ok, how do I go about doing that and getting the 19 dollar deal"? He said "you just did"...hehehe...
So I will get a new HR 20 for $20 and change including tax.......I wont complain about that or try to get anymore.....Then he said "let me set up installation for you"....I thought Oh crap, here comes a 3 month wait time to get installation....He came back on the line and asked "how is Tuesday morning between 8 and 12 noon for you ? " hehehehe......It is only my second HR 20 and it cost me $20 more than the first but I am happy..Thanks for all the advice to everyone here.....you cant see me but I am doing the happy idiot dance right now.......:icon_da:

8. NFL Sunday Ticket :money:53.80 X 5 pay

3. $10 credit per month of 12 months
4. Super fan for free
I don't own the Tivo HD DVR, so they are basically upgrading my old H10 receiver. I am just tired of the game. Installation is on Friday and Saturday of next week. I don't know...It really appears that my leverage was waning and football starts tomorrow, so I wanted to make some type of a decision...Geez, this experience sucked.
Called a couple times this week. First line CSR put a comment in my account that I could get one for 199. I called the next day, go to retention, she saw that I had gotten that offer the day before and still offered me the HR for 19.95. That's all I wanted. I have to wait until October 5th, but that's fine!
Again, because of the information this site has that has saved me money I am a paying DBSTALK club member.

Yeah, if it were not for NFL ST, I would have pulled the plug last night, I'm still thinking about doing that. The whole company was built on the backs of people like us and yet, there is no love.... somebody out there with no history with them, will get what should have been my free DVR.
Dave, I also have had a long history with DTV, back to the first few months it was available and I bought the single LNB dish and 1 receiver for over $600. My advice to you would be just to stay persistent. I called and asked for retention immediately and I just told the fellow I got that he had only a few minutes to keep my business. He was extremely nice about things and offered more than I would've thought possible. It just takes patience, as I tried a few months ago and struck out in about 6-7 attempts to get just the receiver for no charge. Hang in there, you will get the right guy at some point if you are dilligent about calling!
I recently signed up for new service through BellSouth. I'm getting the special with the premium package free for 4 months with the purchase of NFL Season Ticket. I'm also getting the HDDVR for 299 minus a 100 rebate. Is this a good deal to get started as a D* customer, or shuld I be angling for a better deal?

The coupon expires on September 14th.
I think that there is a reason for that. :)

Yesterday I posted in regard to the fact that I had received a great deal, but it was for not as the call dropped as the retentions rep was making my order on his end, and as such it never went thru.
Well, all in all, I dealt with 6 retention reps before the 7th was able to offer me a deal that somewhat resembled my inital offer. It goes without saying that being nice to the rep goes a long way in trying to have them work with you on getting the offer that best suites your needs. I will say that both the great deal I received yesterday and the deal I received today were both calls I made in the evening. I doubt the time of day had anything to do with anything, but in my case, it bears mentioning that both my 'best deals' were evening calls (after 9pm PST).
It also bears mentioning that in reading the "success stories" posted on here, it helps to have some 'leverage' to deal with. (Most people that seem to be getting good deals tend to be those with NFLST or SF, In my case it is ESPN CG and ESPN FC in addition to my Platinum package as well as being a customer since '98).
The retention rep that got me a good deal this evening was Gary. I told him that being a long-time customer, I was looking to see if he could help me putting together a package that met my needs in terms of HD coverage and sports offerings. I told him that being a loyal DirecTV customer, I only wanted something to keep me up with the changing offerings with the HD and that I had no reason to cancel if they kept me a happy customer. After he pulled up my account, he put me on hold while he "see what he could do for me". This is what he came up with:
HR20 for FREE (No S/H fees)
5 Line "SlimDish" plus Install FREE (Duh!)
12 months HD access FREE
$10 service credit for 12 months
6 months HBO FREE (Already a Premiere subscriber, but nice either way)
To top it off my install date is in 4 days (9/11).
I am very pleased with the offer Gary was able to extend. I should also mention that this DID lock me into another 2 year agreement, which I was now many years out of. But as I mentioned earlier, I've no reason not to be in an agreement given that I am now in my ninth year of loyalty to DirecTV. The only reason this post is so long is to actually ENCOURAGE those of you whom have been shot down various times. Hell, it took me SEVEN times, but it worked! Again, being NICE and realizing these are human beings you're speaking to on the other end goes a VERY LONG WAY and in the end, it WILL BE a win-win!

2. Shipping - Free :D
3. Install with pole mount 5lnb Slimline Dish - Free :D
4. Choice Plus with HD & DVR - :money: 69.99
5. :money:120 one time credit for HD Access :D
6. :money:10 credit for 12 months :D
7. :money:10 credit for 10 months (welcome back mail in coupon) :D
8. NFL Sunday Ticket :money:53.80 X 5 pay

10. 2 year commitment

This is the closest deal I've seen posted here to what I got. It differs in that I got $150 one-time credit (instead of 120), 2x$10x12mo of credits, free HBO/SHO/CINEMAX/STARZ (6mo), and free MLB:EI superfan.
Just so folks know what to shoot for. I also got all this by referencing Comcast.

As a win back customer, here's the deal I was able to negotiate:
Sunday Ticket with Super Fan $59.99 for 4 months
1 year HD credit $10 per month
4 months Premier Package for free
Welcome back credit $10 per month for 10 months
One time Sunday Ticket credit $20 (going to miss first week - install on 9/13)
1 HD DVR: $30
1 HD Receiver: $99
2 standard receivers: Free
5 LNB dish install: Free
Shipping: $20
The hardest part was negotiating the HD DVR. I was able to get that down to $30, but they absolutely wouldn't budge on the HD receiver. They said b/c I was getting the HD DVR for only $30, I'd have to pay full price for the HD receiver...
Oh well, I'm happy. Feels good to be back with D*. Also feels good to part of this forum! The information here is invaluable! Thanks to all! :)
I purchased a HR10 two years ago and called Directv a week ago about getting
a HR20 and new dish. I was quoted a cost of $100. I sent an email saying I should
get a better deal. I was called 3 days later and offered a HR20-700 and Slimline
dish at no cost. It was installed 4 days later. The installer was very nice and said
he wanted to change the location of my dish because of weight. It was installed
with supports and was a professional installation. K5CC Texas

Dont feel so bad that had happened to me the first time I called right before labor day the salesmen I was talking to "Gary " I believe was giving away the house then we got disconnected. figures took man y man y hours later but I kinda got what I wanted dont give up just keep on calling .

I should add that the deal I got yesterday was for my second HR20-700. I got the first one in January and with it came all the freebies as mentioned by everyone plus a two time $175 credit to my account for the next two months. I already had cabling run to both units but they did put it a new slimline dish, pole, grounding block and gave me a zinwell switch in case I needed one anytime soon.
They definitely want to keep the customer base and are willing to do something to do it. Just be nice tot he rep and tell them that you read on an internet forum about all the good deals people are getting and you just want what everyone else is getting.....hehe.....they will work with you

That I know of, you can cancel the install, not so sure on being able to 're-negotiate' since the package you mentioned above sounds like a good one and you're already bound to that 2 year agreement (verbal) when you were offered that package.
Your package sounds good, why would you want to re-negotiate?
I guess maybe I am being a bit greedy. I just think that having to pay $199 for the second HR20, when others are receiving them for free or a significant discount, is not comparable. Not to mention those receiving free HBO and the like. But again, each suscriber is different. I have only been with them this time for only 2 years, but I have 4 hearts and I thought I could do better. Maybe I will cancel the second dvr, get an H20 instead and save money for the HR21...

You are correct when you state that each subscriber is different. As I posted earlier, a 'strong' leverage in these situations seems to be a premium service subscription (NFLST being by far the biggest case for most getting 2 HR20s for free/reduced rates).
This is definitely one of those YMMV type of deals, that's for sure.
Thats the funny thing, because I have the highest tier movie package, NFLST, equipment protection and a bunch of older, sucky boxes...By the way...The rep. told me that my contract will not begin until the installation of the second box, so I assumed I may still be able to negotiate a better deal. I suspect that the HR21 will not be out for a few months, probably north of $1000, but I think I may be better off with just the H20 in the bedroom and not order the second HD DVR.

The HR21 that's been announced/previewed, is the HR21Pro. Its a rack mount box geared towards professional/high end installs, and it lacks ATSC tuners. Unless you're looking for something like that just go with the HR20.
Thanks for the info on the HR21. I thought they would also release a consumer version. That makes my decision easier.

Yep. When I was researching how best to score a free HR20, the common theme seemed to be that NFLST subscribers got by far the best deals. I'm starting to wonder if I got lucky (I got the $19 deal), because I only have Total Choice Plus (yeah, I'm old skool) and no premiums; still, I've been with DirecTV for 6 years and I always pay my bill on time, so that might have helped.
I got the $19 deal for my parents as well; they've had DTV a couple of years longer than I have, and have subscribed to HBO the whole time. In 6 months, I'm going to try to score a second HR20 for them, as well as myself. If we're paying the extra money per month, might as well have HR20s on both TVs, even though the second ones are only SD.

I see we're on the same page. I'm also planning on waiting the 6 month period to score another HR20 as I just upgraded the TV in my bedroom. I figured going for 2 HR20s on the same call was being a glutton. I can certainly wait and in the mean time learn how to use the HR20, so when I get one for my bedroom I'll be well versed.

that is mostly correct. I have been a Platinum or highest package subscriber (they keep changing the name) since late 93 or early 94 and have had NBA season ticket as many years as it has been available too. I have no idea how many stars I have. I have had the same package all these years, I have auto pay on my account and have never had a late payment. That being said, I still believe that us paying for leased equipment should be very inexpensive and not the $650 I paid for my first SD receivers and especially the almost $500 tag on the HR 10-250 when it was new at BB. With this last deal it just struck me funny that the rep stated several times that I would have to send my HR10-250 to them or they would charge me for it. The first time I was told to keep it. I guess they still need refurb models for those still using them.

The HR10-250 was $999 at BB when I purchased it.
Reguardless of what the reps told you, you will have to send the HR10-250 back only if it is a leased unit. If it is an owned unit no one is going to want it back, when it is leased they just want it back so they can destroy it and take the additional tax writeoff. They are no longer sent out to customers for any reason.

yeh,I waited on the HR 250 until it had a sizable rebate (I think it was $300) plus I bought a new LCD TV at the same time so I got a pretty good sized gift certificate from BB with it.
I understand your point on the leased deal. I bought mine at BB but also traded it in for my first HR 250-700 but they let me keep it so I dont know if it is actually mine or theirs at this point....hehe...Either way I got a good deal on both Hr 20-700's and cant complain.

4 months of Premier + HD

I just called again. This time I took the offer, which was:
HR20, $19.95 handling charge
$10 credit for one year
3 months of HBO/Starz/Showtime free
Free installation on new 5LNB dish, wiring, multiswitch
Installation is next week!
I'm happy! :joy:
I just called, they offered me:
HR20, free of charge
$10 credit for 6 months
Free installation on new 5LNB dish, wiring, multiswitch
no programming credits (I asked).
If I want a 2nd receiver it would cost $199, or $99 for H20.
I didn't take the deal because a lot of you have done better. I'll call back in a few days to see what happens.
I posted the following in another thread, but thought it would be appropriate here and might help someone:
Decided to do it....upgrade to the HR20....
Special thanks to Milominderbinder2 for your suggestions on "Getting a Good Deal...". Here's what I got:
I asked for Retention, but the Customer Service guy said I can probably help you without talking to Retention. He gave me the HR20 deal - free. He called it a "swap", but I told him I wanted to keep my HR10 since I own it (I do). He said that was fine. He said I would just pay the $19.95 shipping, but then said he could waive that - so I am only paying $1.54 for the taxes!
I then pushed on and asked if there were any programming deals since I was entering a new committment period with this. He said - You mean after all this for free you want more - and laughed about it. I told him you can't blame a guy for trying to get all he could. He told me he would have to transfer me to Retention for anything more. He was very polite, BTW, as was I.
Retention acted confused as to why I was transferred to them since I already agreed to an offer. I explained that I was wondering about any programming specials since I was entering a new commitment. They asked what I was interested in. I told them I used to have Showtime and NFL Ticket w/SuperFan. They asked if I was interested in NFL/SuperFan. I said what kind of deal can you offer me.
Long story short - I ended up getting an $80 credit for the NFL/SuperFan package and 12 months of free HD service. I feel pretty good about this deal since I kinda missed the SuperFan last year.
One more interesting note. I asked Retention how many "Hearts" I was following Milominderbinder2's suggestions. The lady acted shocked that I knew about this, and never did tell me my hearts rating. She kept asking how I knew about this. I told her I read it on the internet. She asked me where. I just told her on some discussion boards. She just did not believe that anyone from the general public knew about this rating system. At the end of the call she asked - Did I answer all your questions? I said - Yes, except you still didn't tell me my Hearts rating! (I was just giving her a hard time - I like to do that with people). She laughed and told me that the service I received "should indicate the answer". Kind of strange conversation regarding the Hearts rating issue.
Anyway, sorry if I bored anyone with the extra long thread. Thanks for all the help. I hope I am satisfied with the HR20. I have loved my HR10-250 and other SD Tivos and I'm hoping I don't get dissapointed with the HR20.

You probably can call to see if there are any programming deals you can get, given that realistically your new committment begins when your service is activated on the new receiver (according to what the retentions guy told me). You have up until that time to cancel the service/deal.

Cool, I thought that was the case. I was told on the phone that I didn't have to add HD programming until I got an HDTV, but that appears not to be the case, so perhaps I can get an HD credit. I'll also have to ask about my hearts rating. :)
Whatever I do, I don't want to screw up my chances of getting a second HR20 for $19 down the road. The R15 is giving me some grief with skipping and freezing, and when I finally have to replace it, I want to do so with an HR20 and not another R15, to avoid the hassle of swapping receivers yet again when we upgrade that TV.

Okay, I've searched a bunch of pages and I haven't seen this mentioned yet so I guess I'll ask away. I received my HR20 for $20 shipping and I got $10 off for 12 months. What I really wanted was a second receiver at a discount and the best offer they could do for me was to offer a $150 rebate toward the purchase of one at a retail outlet.
Two questions:
1 - Has anyone been offered this? Seems kind of strange to get this offer and have to call retention back to get the rebate process in action. Sounds fishy.
2 - Has anyone actually received a rebate/credit from DirecTv for something like this?
Regardless, I plan to go out and buy a new receiver tomorrow, but I wondered if I should waste my breath trying to get my $150.

Sounds like you haven't really 'searched' these pages very well, as this is discussed by a few people as part of the deal. For the most part, upon you purchasing said receiver, when you call to activate it, they then add whatever credit they promised to your account.

Successful upgrade has been completed...
A quick refresher - Friday I was offered 1 HR-20 for free ($19 shipping) and the second at $299 (minus 6 months of free HD $60), for a net cost of $258 to upgrade my HR10-250s. I knew this was nowhere near the best deal I could make.
Called tonight and got an articulate CSR in retention (I really think this is key) and I was very nice and used the phone silence strategy after I told her I wanted to be able to recieve all the new HD on BOTH of my TVs. She went through her spiel and I just sat there - let her fill the uncomfortable silence by making a good offer right out of the gate. The "swap out" program she called it, said she could honor the first one for free, but that the second one would cost $99 (plus $19 shipping), but she could offset that with 12 months of free HD ($120), so at this point I am $2 in the black. I thanked her, but continued to be very reserved.
She runs through all the account modifications and says, "Oh you won't have to pay for shipping since both of your boxes are already wired." Great I replied. She scheduled me for a morning appointment this Friday. I said that I was very pleased to get such a quick install and thanked her again. She then said, "As a bonus, you will also get 3 months of free DVR service on all your boxes."
To summarize, $99 charged to my account, $165 in credits = net profit of $66 - and I didn't even ask/push for any additional credits - she just kept giving them to me. Like Craig says - pays to be nice.
Good luck to everyone still rolling the dice - KEEP TRYING until you are satisfied...

There may still be time to get the HD package for 9.95 a month.
Once the new HD channels are turned on, it appears that new HD customers may have to pay an added $4.95 for the "HD Extra Pack."
When the new channels go on, current HD subscribers may be grandfathered in at $9.95 not have to pay $4.95 for the HD Extra Pack.
So if you are thinking about upgrading to an HR20, you might want to do it now... Here are the steps. (http://www.dbstalk.com/showthread.php?p=839938#post839938)
EDIT: Note that HD Extra has not been announced. This is conjecture based on alleged internal documents.

- CraigJust a note of caution for those trying to avoid the $4.95 fee for the HD Extra Pack ... There's some debate about who will be grandfathered in to receive the channels in this pack at no extra charge. Some folks believe it's anyone who has the HD Access $9.95 on their account before the new Pack goes live, while others believe it's anyone who has "legacy HD equipment" on their account before then. (The mention of "legacy HD equipment" comes direct from what appears to be internal DIRECTV documents, implying that if you have an older HD receiver like an HR10, you're fine.)

True. This is all based on two alleged internal documents. Both reference "HD Extra." One is a PPT slide that says in part:
Existing customers
• Grandfather all customers with legacy HD equipment
• Create new HD programming tier(s) (DIRECTV HD EXTRA PACK) with separate fee ($4.99) for remaining legacy customers
It might be that someone who can prove that they owned legacy HD equipment at the HD Extra launch date will be grandfathered.
It might be that you will be grandfathered if you had HD equipment and the $9.95 HD service on your account when HD Extra is launched.
Time will tell.

man, now i'm wondering if i should deactivate my h20 receiver? I currently have an old Hughs SD receiver that is currently on my regular tube tv in the bedroom. A SD Tivo unit on my SXRD, and as of tomorrow a HR20 in my finished basement.
My plan was to deactivate the Hughs and the H20 until the wife and i determined if we were willing to deactivate the tivo unit and just go with the h20? Along that same thinking, is there charges just to reactivate a unit?

Other than the $4.99 additional receiver fee, no, there is no additional charge.

I have Comcast cable at the moment ... and their rates are very high. Would like to move to satellite and keep a similar setup ... i.e. 2 HD DVRs with HDMI and ext. storage capability.
Never ever used satellite TV .. this is going to a first.
Can someone point to any good deals where I can get two HD DVRs without having to pay upfront for them ? Thanks.

I do not know how are you guys getting these deals. I have now tried 3 times (2 with regular sales people and one with retention) and I keep hearing the same message: “there is no way to get a free HD DVR”.
And they seem genuinely sincere about this. I am guessing that you have to get to a certain level of CSRs to get that deal and these guys on lover levels do not even know about it. In ether case, looks like I will be going to Dish…

I know so far I have tried twice. Once was told $199 + shipping & taxes. The second time was $299 + shipping & taxes.
I will definetely be trying again, but so far not getting any love from D*.
got 2 more installed today
1 for free 1 for 199.
and a new slimline dish to go with it all. installer is on the roof right now.
my installer just left and my second HR 20 is working fine (knock on wood)....When he called to activate the new unit they were going to send a call tag for my HR10 but I asked if I could keep if I kept it active and they said yes. I am going to have it installed in my office and later try for another deal to upgrade it.......I love D*

SO here I sit at almost 2pm local time. Install was scheduled for 8-noon today. Hve had several calls from Directech to say they would be late, and they say they will be here "soon" for the anticipated 2 hour install.
Assuming they DO make it, I am planning to call D* and make a modest complaint, then inquire about HBO. What are my odds of seeing 6 mos free after giving up an extra half day of work!?

Dude, I so fear that happening to me. I did the 8A-12P install because I have to leave to pick up my son at school at 3:00 every day. A delay like that would mean that I'd have to reschedule, and considering what the dates look like right now it'd be a fairly significant additional wait.
I would definitely give them a call and complain. Remember that politeness goes a long way, though.

Currently one HR10-250 and two R-10 (all owned, not leased). Been a subscriber for 18 months. Don't get HBO/ST/SF or sports packages. Just regular old D* and HD pkg.
Called this weekend to upgrade and got two HR20's, slimline and install for $120. (One for free and second for $99 and $20 shipping). Earliest install was Oct 3, but I will be out of town until Oct 6th, so I scheduled it for Oct 9th. Gave myself a couple of days slop in case flights are delyed, meetings slip, etc. Also, I got the 6-8 am install time. Took the first one, but I have never heard of that before. Anyone else get that slot?
CSR started at $100 for one and said that the second would cost $299, total of $400. But...she could break the payments in three! Woo hoo! Told her that was more than what I wanted to pay and she added $100 in credits for a total of $300. Told her I would talk to the wife, but it was still more than I wanted to day. Five seconds of silence and she said, "this is what I can do for you...." First one free, and $100 for the second. She also said it would be 2X$20 for shipping, but on the website only $20 is charged! She also was clear that once I activated these receivers, I would have a two year commitment.
After reading, I knew that others were getting X months free of HD, ST, SF or HBO. Before I called, wife and I agreed that we don't need any of it. Only thing that would have taken is the six months of HD for free, but, I feel the deal was fair enough and it would have only been $60. Therefore, I didn't push.
I would have taken the $300 deal, but after reading this thread, I knew what people were getting on average. So, I stuck to my plan and got what I think is a fair deal. I am no special customer, don't order the extras or PPV's and haven't been with them that long. Was never put on hold for her to talk to a supervisor. Just think I either got lucky with this CSR, or being polite and talking to them nicely in a non-demanding manner worked.
Take care,
Jim

OK 5th rep was the charm. Called and go the same spill 4 times. $299 one payment or 3 smaller payments. Asked for Retention department and got the same story. This time she threw in 12 months free HD though so that would have knocked it $120 in a year.
Asked her for my Contract Date and Cancellation amount and told her I was going to shop around. She then came back with the Free HD DVR for the $19.95 shipping, but no free HD. I jumped because my whole goal was to get another HD DVR so I was happy with that.
Scheduled for 9/17 install.

So far I have called only once, they offered me the DVR for $199 and 12 months of HD..I may try one more time (been with D* forever it seems); she did say that they were getting so many customers asking for this that they no longer are able to do it for just S&H. Whether that is true or not or just a "boiler plate" response, I am not certain. Should I call back tomorrow and try again? I called today and put in a PIN number I was given via voicemail. When I turned down the offer and asked for retentions she said she "was" in retentions. I honestly didn't get that feeling, but I have really only called D* a handful of times in my 12 year tenure with them. Any recommendations? I was very polite during the whole process but I did thank the CSR and said I would be canceling at my next monthly renewal (I have been out of commitment for years). I am very close to just going with E*; I am not a very big sports fan anyway so maybe that is the type of customer D* is trying to keep now, not sure.
Thanks for the advice in advance :)

One of the things I mentioned was that the channels I watch are offered on all three services (D*, E*, cable), so while I liked D* and its service, leaving for a competitor wouldn't put a crimp in my television watching habits, while paying full price for the HR20 (when the competitors were offering them as free upgrades) would put a crimp in my wallet.

Well - first time post, long time reader and long time D* subscriber. Called and asked for Retention as I am out of my commitment window and free to let the competitive market forces work for me.
Politely told the CSR that I had an older HD TiVo and an SD TiVo and looking to upgrade to DVRs that will get me localHD Service. He came back after a moment of looking at my account etc. and initially gave the first HR20 for free with a 19.95 S&H charge and the second for $299 with the same 19.95 and then said he would waive the HD Access charge for 12 months - net to me would be roughly $180 plus $39.90 in S&H (install etc with new dish included). I was patient and quiet and stated that I was interested in what else he could offer - he came back with a $10 a month service credit for another 12 months - this brought me down to $60 plus the S&H fees. After some discussion, I felt this was as good as it was going to get - I took it and have my install scheduled for Saturday.
At the very end of the call, he asked if there was anything else he could help me with and I politely asked him what my account rating was in hearts - he nearly fell off his chair laughing! After he calmed down, he stated I must have done my homework and he proceeded to tell me I was 4 hearts.
In all, I am very happy with what I got - to make it better, my sister in law just got D* for ST and I am getting another $50 back for the referral - making the entire transaction only $10 plus S&H fees - not bad for 30 minutes work :)
He did also confirm that I would receive all of the new HD channels about to come online for my existing $9.95 a month HD access fee. Additionally, he stated the new channels were due to come on mid-month. Looks like we are close.
Now if they just get the Redskins to look good on ST............. perhaps week 2 on Monday night.

LOL I mentioned that as well; I just got a tough CSR..I am sure they are willing to let some of their customers go to the competition...if there had been no 24 month commitment I would have had no issues with paying $299 for the receiver. I would describe myself as a very low maintenance customer, I pay bills on time, I rarely complain and I am technically proficient enough to handle most any issue I might encounter. I may try again, but I do not plan on calling 5 or 6 times to obtain my goals..I used to be a very loyal customer to companies, but over time that frankly has come to an end; those who give the best service for the best dollar when my loyalty.

So after being denied by the CSR's in my attempt to switch from HR-10 for $0 and finally winning after e-mailing my dissatisfaction and getting it installed last week last night I got a voice message that they wanted me to call them to get upgraded from HR-10 to HR-20 for free!
I tried this just now. The lowest I could get was a free HR20 and another one for $299 with $120 in bill credits. That's 2 HR20's for $180 plus shipping.
I declined. They noted the offer in my account and gave me a PIN and 800 number for retention (which I won't be giving out - don't ask).
Given that I've been a customer for 10 years and paid $1000 for the HR10 and $800 for the Sony HD200, this isn't good enough. I'll try again later today but it looks like I'll be going to FIOS.

I was wondering what "right away" meant LOL. Well then I am probably done for; I pretty much said yesterday I would call to cancel my contract after my paid month was over with...you think I shot myself in the foot. I did (& do) fully plan to cancel (no sense in making idle threats) if I cannot get a compromise I can work with, but frankly the CSR was not very friendly and I was the entire time, though maybe I came across differently to them. I called yesterday, is it pointless to try again??
Can I still use my PIN or was that one use, seems to be varying explanations about that, they never told me there was a time limit on the PIN, but I rather presumed it was "one time" use.

Remember that this is one of those YMMV type of situations. The previous persons experience will not be yours, and vice versa. If it helps any, I had to call back 7 times before I got a great deal, and yes, I did wait in between calls, and yes, everytime I called and the CSR would tell me that there were notes with the previous deals I had been given and that supposedly 'that's the best they could do for me', until my 7th call when I got a great retentions rep who worked with me in getting a great deal. You have to keep trying to get that one deal that you are satisfied with.

Basically, from what I have been told countless times by retention CSRs, is that if you get one of the HR20s for $19.95 + tax, you have to wait 6 months to get another. I had one all lined up on Sat. with Sunday Ticket($270 + free Stuperfan. Basically, ST + StF+$19.95 for another(would have been my third)HR20. He had it all set up and then the CSR said, "Oh wait, the system won't let me give you another HR20", so I cancelled the whole thing. Any credence to this. I keep getting told to call back in December(6 months from my last $19.95 Hr20.)
One thing I have been wondering: what is the 19.95 S&H all about? All the gear comes with the installer, no? They get it all from their warehouse. The warehouse gets it in bulk shipments.
They used to ship receivers to your home, but no more. So, why all the S&H BS?

I'd be ecstatic to just pay the $19.95 :D
I called back again in about an hour, using the number and PIN.
I started from scratch explaining my situation and desires. After a 5 minute hold, the representative was willing to give me 2 HR20's for a total of $99 plus one $19.95 s&h charge. I'm planning to keep the HR10 and I'm on the phone waiting for CIS to confirm that a multiswitch will be included, plus the two additional lines to the family room.

I spoke with a CSR and he said 2 HR20's for $99 a piece. Didn't look at the order online until today and notice one HR20 and a DIRECTV DVR. Called and they said no it is definately for 1 HR20 at 99 and a standard dvr for 99. Didn't say oh sorry let me see what I can do, so I cancelled the order. I guess I will wait a while before trying again.
I accepted a deal that was not all that great (HR20 for $199 with some credits), and they called me a few days later to schedule the install. When I found out it would be almost a month until install, I called and told them I would get Dish Network, they could install in a few days (all true).
The lady ended up giving me a HR20 for $19.95, 12 months of HD free, and HBO for 3 months. I tried getting another HR20, but she would not budge off $299 :-)
I still had to wait on the install (next Tuesday), but I guess it was worth it.
More info:
1. The multiswitch is included in the HR20 install. They will also run the extra lines for the HR10, mainly because I don't need new lines run (mine are only a few years old).
2. I could have had next Monday 8am as an install date, but I have something going on so I chose next Thursday 8am.
Being polite definitely helped. Also helping was the fact that I've been a customer almost 10 years and haven't gotten a discount since the HD package was first introduced.

A co-worker and I both called today. I was able to get a second HR20 for $19 S/H but he was only offered the $99 deal. I know we have similar programming and time w/D*. Total Choice w/HBO, protection program and HD. I was told I have four hearts, but they wouldn't tell him.
I did attempt to finagle some programming credits, but no dice there. Its definitely the luck of the draw. Back in February, when I got my first HR20, the best deal I could get was for $150 spread out over three months. I even got an install date for Monday.

I just called twice at lunch today. Unlike most of the posts I've read here, I'm not a current HD subscriber, just SD. I've been waiting all year to see how this new satellite thing would play out and I like what I see, so I decided to finally take the plunge.
Anyway, first call she offered me an HR20 for $199. I said no thanks, ate my lunch and called back. The second call she immediately offered me an HR20 for $19.95 plus $10 off my bill for 6 months, install, dish and multiswitch. That was good enough to get me to jump, so I went for it. I also canceled HBO and was kind of hoping she'd get me a deal there as well, but she didn't. Since I'm no longer interested, I went ahead and dumped it anyway. I could have had it installed Sunday morning, but our youngest is have his 5th birthday party then and I've had enough bad luck to not trust them to be cleared out before the party. So I'll be getting it Monday morning.
Now we just need to figure out where to move our old DirecTiVo box. :D
The only odd thing was that she told me we'd only get Fox, ABC and NBC on HD. I'm shocked since I live in Portland Oregon and all our locals are available in HD OTA. In such a large city, I didn't expect to only get a few channels like that. So for now I'll be keeping the OTA antenna setup. I'm hoping that the rest of them will come up soon.

Well I must be the worlds worst negotiator; I asked for my rating and was told i was a 2; this both irritates me and concerns me because they also said I have been a valued customer since 2003; NOT TRUE; I was with DirecTV pretty much from the start (read early 90's) , I had premiere most of those 12 years; I was forced to suspend service for 3 months in 2002 when I moved to a new house; but I went right back to them as soon as I could; I pay my bills always on time, I use auto-pay even..Now about a year ago I did drop Premiere because I caught myself watching movies on HBO I had on DVD LOL, so decided to drop that..so I wonder if they still think I am only a 3 or 4 year customer when in fact I am not...the offers I have been getting are definitely the low end of the spectrum.

I'd say just keep calling. I've been with DirecTV since 2003, only had Choice Plus with HBO, no auto-pay. I'm not sure how many hearts I have since I forgot to ask. I think you're just having bad luck.

Dan,
I don't think the number of years really matter. I have only been with them 18 months and I got 2 X HR20's for $120 including shipping this past weekend. And I only get the Total Choice Plus and HD. No special packages or anything. It is the luck of the draw, and how polite you are to them.
Take care,
Jim

I have to work with demanding customers day in and day out myself so trust me when I say I totally understand where the CSR's are coming from...so I always put myself in their shoes..truth is I really want to stay with Directv, just going to have to decide if I am willing to pay their price of admission or go with Dish. They both have their pluses and minuses, but I am getting weary of calling and calling :) I will also say that being told I was 2 hearts kinda struck in my throat. And while on the subject of tenure, it may not matter but it really should; I have chosen to stay and have not been subject to any commitment. OK, rant off :)

Never knows until they call and ask. They could say they want to upgrade to HD, E* gives a free HD DVR, I'd like to switch to D* do you have any similar deals?
Long story short, I've been a sub since July 6.
Tried to get a deal on HR20 when I signed up but best offer was $199.
Called every week the first 3-4 weeks after install, still $199 and one CSR offered it over two payments.
Called on Friday to see if I could get Sunday Ticket new sub offer and casually asked about HR20. Got the 69.99 Sunday Ticket/Premier pakage offer, an HR20 for 69.99, and 6 months free HD Access. I also got to keep my existing credits.
On a sour note the CSR apparently forgot to enter the HD Access for 6 months free.

Ok I called today to finally inquire about upgrading. I was on the fence since fios is now available in my area and if I switched to them I would save about $25/month. Only drawbacks with fios were the 2year commitment (same as D*) and the fact they currently do not have the MLB extra inning package but they said they might have it before the start of next season. That's a chance I couldn't take, I need the extra inning package so I finally called D*.
I printed out Milominderbinder2's best tips' guide and had that by my side when I called. Called the number on the sheet, was told there would be a long wait so I pressed 0 and got prompt that gave me three options, I pressed option 2 to discontinue service in hopes of getting retention. I was immediately talking to someone who was ready to help me. I explained to her that I was looking to upgrade my HR10 receiver to the hr20. She looked at my account and stated that I still had until Jan08 before my commitment ended. She then said she was looking for the available specials, paused for a moment and said she could replace the hr10 with a hddvr for free. I then said I wasn't looking to replace the receiver, I simply wanted to upgrade my receiver so I could receive the new channels. She stated the cost to upgrade the receiver was $299 but if I wanted to replace it would be free. Seemed like a no brainer I said the replacement is fine with me, but then asked what would I have to do with my current HR10 receiver. She said I could keep it since I owned it. She then said that the free replacement deal was for lease only and I would have to return it if I ever discontinued my service and if I wanted to own the HR20 I could buy it outright for $749. Has anyone ever heard of this??? Anyway I said that I understood the lease process and was fine with the lease process. She then mentioned the renewal of the 2 yr commitment and I told her I was fine with that as well. She then told me she was going to transfer me to someone from tech service to finalize the deal.
So I get transferred to someone who again asks for my name, address, telephone number and reason for the call. I tell her I am looking to replace my current HR10 receiver so I can continue to watch the current and new hd channels. She tells me the cost to replace my receiver is $99. I mentioned to her that the previous lady stated it was free. She reiterated the $99 cost but said she would waive it for me since I was a valued customer but reminds me of the new 2 yr commitment which again say is fine with me.
We finalize the order, she confirms it with me, mentioning the new 5 lnb dish, new RG6 wiring up to $125' x 4 through one wall each and new HD DVR. She does not mention the new multiswitch, I asked about getting a new Zinwell 6x8 multiswitch and she stated that the installers provide that on their own. (guess we'll wait and see if that is true). We set up the installation date (which isn't until Sept. 28  ). She provides me with a confirmation number and tells me to hold while she process the $99 credit and states that there is absolutely no charge for the replacement HD DVR, not even S&H charges. Then she goes on to say that her computer is showing that there is no new 2 year commitment showing on my account. I asked her if it would be there once I activate the new receiver and she stated no because I am still under commitment with D* there was no new commitments needed. Now I know that cannot be true but we will wait and see what happens.
Another thing she did mention to me was to make sure that the installers activated the new receiver while they were there or else there would be a $150 activation fee charge if they forget. Guess I'll have to make sure it gets done while they are there.
In closing, sorry for the lengthy post but thought I'd share what seems to be a bizarre experience, seems like I am getting the HR20 for free (including no cost for S&H). Hopefully everything they told me is correct but somehow I doubt it as it seems to good to be true.
This may be a really dumb question but is there a way on D*.com to see when your commitment is through? Just courious if there is a way to check that on my own.

Wow! That's kind of crazy - if the installer screws up and forgets to do the activation, you have to pay? Yikes! I'll make sure I do that, too!

Thanks for everyone's help. I just called in (twice) to get upgraded. As someone else mentioned, I got the "we're getting heavier than normal call volume" message ... and, after I gave the automated system my phone number, I was able to tell the automated system that I was calling to "cancel service" ... which got me right to a retention CSR.
With the first lady I spoke to, I asked her my # of hearts (3) and proceeded to see what I could get. She only offered 1 $19.95 HR20 and told me I'd have to pay $299 for the second ... no free programming or credits. I told her I wasn't interested and she said she'd write some notes in the system - in case I wanted to call back for the same offer. I told her (nicely) not to bother, that I was probably just going to leave things as-is for a while ... ummm ... like about 5 minutes ... until I called back again ...
The next guy was MUCH more personable ... I called him by name and asked him how he was doing (he was in Boise) ... and I did NOT ask him about my number of hearts (as I figured 3 wasn't going to get me any special favors). He asked what I wanted and I told him 2 HD-DVR's. Right away he offered 2 HR20's for FREE (didn't mention any handling charge) without me asking. Then I told him that I'd heard of some people getting free programming and credits. I stayed relatively silent and he started pouring on things one at a time ... 12 months free HD package ... 6 months HBO ... 6 months Showtime ... 6 months Cinemax (and, of course, the equipment/cables/multiswitch/installation/etc). I probably should've kept quiet and let him add more (LOL) ... but it was all I could do to keep from laughing ... so I said "THANKS" & "when can I get installed" ... he says: "how about next Tuesday morning" ... ummm ... sounds good to me ...
... I just hope that it all works out as he said ... he kept me on the phone for quite a while (with silence) as he worked on getting "all the stuff I gave you for free" (or something like that) setup in the computer ... I went over it all with him again ... but it almost seems too good to be true ...
He said that I probably wouldn't get a slimline dish, as that was typically only for apartments ... is that true? And does it matter? My dish sits on top of my relatively big house ... but the idea of the smaller-the-better sounds good to me ...
Hope that story helps someone ... I was prepared to call in 5 times if need be ... but attempt #2 did the trick! :)

This is obviously a heavy install period, thanks to the NFL starting up. Is there a lighter volume time, when people might be able to get slightly better deals? Or does that not have anything to do with it?

Hey man, congrats on the great deal. A lot of courtesy goes a long way in these matters. In regard to the dish, that's total bull. I just got installed and I have a big house and got the slimline. And if I'm not mistaken, the slimline is the only dish that will give you the reception on the forthcoming HD channels. One of the experts on here can chime in on that.

The larger "sidecar" 5-LNB dish will also allow you to receive the new HD channels. The only difference is aesthetics.

I called tonight to get two HR20s, one to replace our existing Philips DirecTivo and the second to be an additional receiver for another TV. While we're out of a contract, we are also "modest" subscribers: no movie channels, no season ticket, only a single receiver, no HD service until now, nothing too spendy with them.
Was offered $19.95 s/h for the first one, and $299 for the second one along with $10 credit for 12 months, free HD for 12 months, and 6 months of showtime/HBO/cinemax. I figured the free movie channels are gravy, and the free HD & $10 credit are roughly equal to a $240 "discount" on the $299 receiver price... so I took it.
It's not as good a deal as some have gotten, but I think it was pretty good and it was quick & painless. Inside of 20 minutes I had the whole thing done & scheduled (October 2nd install), and the movie channels activated!
I was trying to hold off until the SWM is available, but hopefully they will install a multiswitch & use my existing 2 coax cables that go to my current 3 LNB dish. I forgot to ask the CSR about it. I'd rather they didn't run 2 more coax cables into my house.
Neither of the orders have line items that say "multiswitch" but from reading the posts I'm confused as to whether a "regular" multiswitch would have to explicitly listed or is something an installer will just take care of.

The multi-switch is included as part of the installation. If you need it, they should set one up during installation.
First Call. Voice automated system didn't understand "Retention" but it snapped to attention when I said "Cancel Service" and had me in the retention department talking to a live CSR in about 5 seconds. I told her I was considering Dish Network but wanted to stay with DTV since they are coming out with new HD channels but I didn't want to pay for any new hardware. I have a HR10-250 DVR right now and some other crappy SD Tivo DVR in another room. I asked for two HR20 units. She offered one for free and the other for $199. Then offered 6 months of HD programming. I mentioned that Dish was offering all equipment for free and one year of free HD service. She wouldn't budge on the second HD DVR but did up the free HD programming to one year + 3 months of free Showtime. I took the deal without the extra $199 receiver. Then she hit me with the $19.95 FedEx fee. Whatever.
Good timing too since I was just about to call and cancel Showtime and Center Ice for the upcoming season. I'll cancel Center Ice next week and Showtime in 3 months.
Bottom line is:
Free HR20+Dish+Multiswitch+Install
One year free HD service ($9.99/mo)
3 months free Showtime ($12.00/mo)
Install on the 19th... same day she said the new HD channels should be up and running. Word on the street says it may be delayed to as late as the 25th but that's cool. I paid a bundle for the HR10 so I'm thrilled for the free upgrade. I'll try for a second HR20 when I upgrade my other TV to something HD compatible.

Deal my friend got. I gave him my HR 10-250 to try out. He needed to call a few days ago for new card for HR 10. He got card yesterday, but they made a mistake and sent him the same card number. He got on phone and while he was talking, his door-bell rang. It was 2 comcast people going house to house trying to get customers. He ask DTV rep to hold and evidently DTV person hear him talking to comcast guys. When he got back on phone, Dtv offered him the HR20, free movies channels and NFL sports package., full install, etc. Have to just pay $19.95 shipping. He called last night and told me what a blessing that was, as he often tried but could never get a deal and was ready to quit DTV. He has been a customer for 4 years. So hang in there guys and keep trying for a good deal.:D

File this in the, "if it sounds too good to be true..." I was scheduled for an 8-12 install today after agreeing to my upgrade earlier this week to swap out of 2 HR10-250s plus the slimline dish/multiswitch. I called both D and the local installer two days ago to confirm and the installer yesterday to confirm. I asked for a call prior to arrival.
Today at 10AM I called to check the status. I just got a call back saying the installer's wife had to be taken to the hospital and had to be rescheduled for next Wednesday. Same **** different day with the local installers. When we moved here it took 4 appointments before everything was installed correctly. D should really place tighter controls on the local installers. This is the ONLY direct interaction 99.99% of its customers have with D.
Bottom line is the local installers make D look like ****...

Welcome to the quality, professional installations touted by D*. I assume that it was MASTEC providing your upgrade. Do yourself a favor and contact D* about your missed appt. You're eligible for a $100 credit on your account for this.
I've recently went thru similar issues and raised H**L with D*. it's the same thing with these guys (MASTEC). I was supposed to have a 8-12 and at 10 got a call that "tech had a flat" and they couldn't tell me when he would arrive. Long story short he arrived after 3 pm. They schedule too much work for the techs and if they run into any trbl at all(and they usually do) the whole operation is Fubar.
Make sure to request a "Sr. Tech" be assigned from MASTEC when contacting D* or else you stand a good chance of getting the standard guy with a van and ladder on top subcontractor who can barely communicate with you professional installer.
I called this afternoon and was able to secure a second HR20 for shipping charges only. I got my first one back in February for $199 plus a bunch of discounts. Today I spoke to a regular CSR first and was offered $299, asked for retention and then asked if I qualified for shipping only charge on a new HR20 to replace an old standard DVR that is going bad and she said yes. Only thing is, even though all they need to do is plug in the new receiver, I couldn't get an install until Sept 26, went online to try to pull it up and online shows unavailable until after the 1st week of Oct. Overall, very painless process.

It depends on where you live. I was given the option on Wednesday to install on the following Monday, but I pushed it back to the following Thursday due to my schedule.
I was thinking more along the lines of getting the best free (or reduced) equipment/programming deals. Since a large number of people are calling in to order D* right now, it would make sense if they were less likely to offer people free equipment and/or programming than they would be if few people were placing orders - kind of like when a car dealer has sagging sales and puts big discounts on his cars, which he wouldn't do if sales were brisk.
Basically, I'm hoping to score another free HR20 in six months. March is probably one of their slow times, with Christmas and the start of NFL season being (I would guess) the busiest.
If they offer me that deal, I really, really wish they'd send me the second HR20, as the 5 LNB dish will be in place and the wiring is in place.

Hey guys, I been reading this site for a while and specifically this thread. I love my Tivo and have had a deathgrip on it for as long as possible but with the new HD channels coming out and reading the success stories of some of the great deals D* have been offering I just had to take the plunge. So yesterday I decided I would just try and get some good deals. I have 2 HR10-250 HD tivos and I figured I would do my best to try to get them swapped out with the HR20's for free or the $19 S&H deal some have been getting.
Try #1: I went straight to retention by saying I wanted to "cancel service." The first guy I talked to was pretty nice and said he could give me the 1st HR20 for free but I would have to 6 months between getting the second at a good deal or pay $299 to get it now. I tried to deal with him and he said ok let me see what I can do. He put be on hold for more than 5 min then I got disconnected....joy.
Try #2: Again I went straight to retention got another gentleman and basically went through the whole thing again and guess what disconnected again! I'm surprised this would happen in retention...but I'm sure they knew the game I was playing.
Try#3: Again retention....after being disconnected twice I told the third CSR that I had been disconnected and he assured me he wouldn't do the same....but guess what strike 3 and disconnected after several minutes on the phone. By this time I was getting pretty discouraged. But I thought hey why not I'll try one last time.
Try #4 (Success!): Again retention but I got the nicest lady on the phone ever. I was very polite and expressed that I was looking at replacing my 2 HD Tivos for the new units that would allow me to view the new HD content. She told me to give her a minute that she was looking up what she could do for me. I asked if she would not put me on hold and told her I had gotten disconnected when I called previously. She said of sure no problem I'll keep you on the line. (thank god!) So after a few min of silence she said "oh sorry it's taking me a while it looks like there are some new offers in your area that we can set you up with." I said great! and made some small talk. I mentioned how it was somewhat disappointing that my only one year old Tivos won't work with the new HD channels and she said "I know isn't that horrible." I about fell out of my chair that she felt the same way I did. Anyways after some checking out she said "ok I got you all setup with 2 free HR20's (no $19 charge, 100% free, only 2-year commitment)." I said awesome. Then I thought hey let me try asking about programming deals. So I asked is there any special programming deals in my area since I'm signing a new 2-year contract? She oh ya let me check that out. She offered me the 3-months free for all the movie channels (HBO, Cinemax, Starz, Encore, Showtime, etc.). I asked if there were any other options she said "ya it looks like I could get free HD service for a year." So I proceeded to kinda think about and she just said "well it looks like you're in really good standing and since you are signing a new 2-year contract I'll just give you both offers." Again I almost fell out of my chair....I had the biggest grin on my face. This lady was fantastic!
So in the end I got my 2 totally free HR20's, free install, 3-months free of all premium movies, and free HD service for a year. And hey it only took 4 tries. My install is on Sept. 24 so hopefully everything goes well.
Good luck everyone....and don't get discouraged by crappy CSR's :P

Well guys, thanks for the patience, *D came through for me. It only costs $21.35 for the S&H on a new HR-20; I called on Saturday night, made the "Cancel Service" option and was talking to a retention CSR in about 30 seconds. I deviated a little from the plan, I did mention I have been with *D for over 12 years, have made very few requests etc in that time etc, and I really was calling to cancel if they didn't compromise with me. I didn't get any free programming (though I did mention it) but I decided since my objective was for a low cost upgrade to an HD DVR, I accomplished my primary goal. I think I could have pressed the issue but it was not worth it to me. I will likely call in a few months and pick up another HR20. The CSR I spoke with was extremely friendly and cooperative and after dealing with 3 "not so much CSRs" in the earlier part of the week, this was a most refreshing change of pace.
So long story short, I am once again a happy camper, and I will be sticking with D* for some years to come. This has been an extremely helpful forum by the way; I think I will have to become a paying member just to say thank you :)

I'm new here and wandering what DLB is. Also, *D left a voice message for me about a week ago asking me to call to update my equipment for new HD equipment. Has this happened to anyone else.

Hi Shogunz:
DLB, I believe stands for Dual Live Buffer; you can read about it here:

I will about ditto Dan. Called up, asked for cancel, got an incredibly friendly CSR. Explained that I was at an equipment crossroads (Under no commitment running a Sony HD3000 & Phillips Directv/TIVO {which I said could only pulled from my cold, dead hands}). She was quick to offer a free year of HD programming, but when I said I really needed to the equip upgrade and mentioned others getting the HR20 for $21.35, she gave it to me. Turns out I had four hearts too, so I am guessing that played into it.
The whole call took ten minutes. Thanks for all of the help!

Ok, now that I know what a DLB is, I'm still wondering how many of us are receiving calls from DirecTV to update our equipment for HD? I'd like to know how much of a hassle it will be to deal with the CSR's when I return their call. Although I'm new here, I haven't noticed any posts that mentioned DirecTV calling customers to upgrade them. Are they making calls to certain regions/area to slowly convert everyone?

I think in most cases, people are calling in; in a few posts that I have read, D* actually did call some customers, but I have only read a few isolated cases. It's just my take, but you would think they would be reaching out to people like me that have been good customers, but who saw NO value in HD because of the limited selection. If I were to hazard a guess, I bet they start doing that probably as soon as they get D10 and D11 fully up and running. At some point in the future, MPEG2 receivers will have to be replaced; I would think it is in everyone's best interest (D* especially) to do this gradually rather than all at a time. Again, just supposition on my part..Oh, forgot to mention, install is set for 10/2 here; apparently my area has high demand for upgrades right now.

Got free HR20 and H20 with 5lnb dish. Not much but I'm ok with it. Had to haggle a bit to get him to remove the 19.95 handling on the H20. It would be nice to not enter into another contract but the CSR said it couldn't be avoided. Besides I'm not going to another provider unless the ATT U-Verse becomes more attractive or DTV does something to make me want to leave. Didn't ask about the hearts thing. I already have the Sunday Ticket and he said there weren't anymore offers for programming now that the football season has started. Installation scheduled in a week and 1/2.
