I'm just finishing up with the retention # now (Im in atlanta):

Summary
"Been hearing about the HR20 available on the internet - looking to get one". Takes a few minutes looking up deals - I mention folks have been getting it for shipping fee. She comes back with $299 with $250 blanket credit + shipping of $19.95. I'm ok with it as its about $69.95. She starts entering and I then ask, well by chance are there any programming credits I can get to help further? All the while maintaining nice joking tone, keeping conversation chatty. She says, sure let me check and then offers $10 off for 6 months. This brings me down to a cost of $9.95 so I am pretty happy and set for 9/18 install!

Keeping my owned HD-Tivo but new eqpmt is leased....

Has anyone been able to order two from DTV?
I had a note on my account about getting two but
now they're limiting me to one and not helping out
with availability (no note on my account, talling me
to try Best Buy)

10+ year customer - no ST, just Total Choice Plus
+ HBO/STARZ and HD programming.

So I just called Retention: The woman was very nice.

I got $200 off, plus the installation fee $19.95 waived.

$99 for the unit which I don't mind.

I asked for free, but she said that was for people who were NFL sunday ticket customers and now can't offer that.

I'm in the SF Bay area, so not sure how much it's in demand, it will be setup end of the month.

She had to take a CC and then applied the credits to my directtv acct. Everyone else have this happen?

One can only venture into the D* CSR death spiral so many times...

SO!

Found out this morning that one of the local Best Buy's had them in stock, for $299. I had a $100 gift card so I used that and bought it there.

Now to get D* to give me a deal on the installation.

Stay tuned...

I'm in Denver. After spending 40 minutes in an infinite loop with D* customer service, I gave up and called the Corporate office in California. They gave me a toll-free number that supposedly went directly to the office of the President (who knows). Anyway, I called it and was able to place my order directly with the Corporate office. I'm getting the receiver, the dish, and installation of my HR10-250 at another location for $99, including S&H. I also asked for some kind of compensation for all the inconvenience, and he gave me $10 off my premium services for six months, which is a $60 value. So, all told, I paid $39 for the upgrade. Installation is scheduled for 10/2.

By the way, the toll-free number is 1-888-237-8327.

So, like a crazy person, I called Customer Retention again. This time they offered me an HR20 for $99.00 Upgrade fee and gave me a $99.00 credit on my programming. So, basically, I'm paying the tax on it. The rep could not give me an install date and said D* will call me in 72 hours to schedule an appointment. Anyone want to take bets on wheither or not I get the unit?

BTW, I got a notification today, the day after I call D* retention, that D* make an inquiry at a credit buearu saying I was seeking credit. Just wanted to let folks know in case they're trying to keep things like this down like when trying to get a mortgage.

Here is the deal I got- Phone call to CRS 2 weeks ago and agent marked my account that she offered to swap 3 of my HR10's for HR20's free. I have a non-hd unit that I am upgrading to HR20 for $299. Installation and dish included. I was told to call back after Sept. 12 to finish the order.

I called today and the agent wasn't happy but said they had to honor it - he was amazed at the deal I was given.

So, 4 HR20's for $299(plus tax), installation next week!

Thanks for the number. It was nice to call and get directly connected to retention versus the automated system hell. I called this afternoon and spoke to a really sweet young lady, sorry I'm bad with names. Anyway, I am as happy as a pig in slop. She said it was available immediately, no having to go through the loops. HR20-700/AT-9 dish, move existing R15 DVR into bedroom, and installation all for the shipping and handling fee of 19.95 plus tax. Install set for this Sunday afternoon between 1-5. She had that appointment or else I would have to wait until the following Saturday, she said there was an available tech in Fort Lauderdale on Sunday. I know at least two others on this board that are in Miami that are scheduled for later next week, but remember we live in different areas of South Florida, and there was a tech available in Lauderdale so I snatched it. I'm going to miss some of my Eagles-Giants game, unless they come after 4, but at least once it's installed I'll be able to watch Sunday night and Monday night football in HD. I psyched.

Here's the deal I got this morning:

Called up retention, and was told by the CSR that the promotion just started today. She indicated I was the first person that she has done of the HR20-250 for installation. The deal she called it was along the lines of "HD upgrade package". I got the new HD DVR and an additional H20 HD receiver for the $99 + tax. She also indicated in this new deal, anyone w/ an HR10-250 could keep it and use it in another room. I'm not sure if she said this because I'm an "A" customer or what, but it sounded like a deal anyone could get.

The only thing that sucks is installation isn't until Oct. 6th. :(

Just got off of the phone with retention - I am getting 2 - HR20's for $99 ea, free dish and multiswitch installed + $120 in programming credits - net to me $99. I am scheduled for install on Oct. 10th, located in Central Mass. I feel like I could have pushed for more credits, but $99 for two dvrs, dish and multiswitch is more than fair. One satisifed customer here, excellent rep as well!!

Also, I am keeping both of my HR10-250's.

Just got off the phone with Retention and they confirmed availability in my area and in stock. Best she would offer me was 399 les 100 credit and no S/H. Asked her if that is the best she can do since both Comcast and Dish will either not charge for equipment or credit 20 dollars a month for a year (or 10 months). Still wouldn't budge so I told her I was calling Dish to confirm and would call D* back to cancel service if Dish will still give me the same offer. Will wait a while before I call back and see if get the same results. I can not see paying 299 dollars for something others are getting for free (and not owning it to boot).
Just got off the phone for the second call. This time was offered 399 for the HR20 less 150 credit. Also 10 dollars a month for 12 months for programming and 10 dollars a month for HBO credit for six months. In all would equal 330 dollars credit making the HR20 69 dollars. She gave me her ID # for when I call back. Think I'll take it.
BTW.....no swap necessary since I own the HR10
Third call as of one hour ago; 200 dollars off and same programming credits as posted earlier. One thing of interest was this last CSR I spoke with recommended I wait two or three weeks and that more than likely I would receive for free???????? She noted my account for this last offer and I told her I would consider it. Also it should be noted that each and every CSR (3 so far) I have spoke with have all been very nice and courteous.

Well today, after the 4th call in almost two weeks, this is what I received:

HR20 for 99.00 plus tax = 106.00 (paid today on visa)
Instant credit to my account = 200.00 (verified on my account page, on line)
HBO credit @ 10.00 for 6 months= 60.00 (also verified)
Customer credit @ 10.00 for 12 months - 120.00 (also verified)

Net 274.00 to the good!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Customer for 3 yrs. with total choice, HD, & HBO.

Every call led me to a very nice csr, all female btw. The last csr was especially nice as we chatted about a few other things while she was processing the info.

Very happy but also a tad annoyed it took four calls and almost two weeks but all is good:D

I'm an A list customer since 1997. I ordered my HR20 via the D* website on 8/17/06, one of the few to do so during what was apparently a very short window in which it was listed on the site during the LA preview (it had been removed from the site by midday 8/21, and not added back in until a few days ago). The price was $399, and they billed my credit card for it on 8/18.

The install was finished up just a couple hours ago, and I called up Retention to ask them about the $299 price that is currently being paid by folks acquiring the unit. They pointed out that $399 was the price at that time of my order, and that it had officially dropped to $299 only yesterday (8/13). I pointed out to them that since the unit was actually only delivered today, one day *after* the price drop, it would be just downright neighborly of them to look into adjusting the price to reflect today's price. They were more than happy to do this, and are now applying a $100 credit to my programming costs over the next year.

So, it does not hurt to ask (politely!)- especially for those who took the risk to order very early on... I think $299 is very fair for this hardware, since I did not have an HR10 or any more modern IRD/DVR to swap (and I paid a living _fortune_ for my DTC100 when it first came out). So, count this as a "happy camper" story: a rare enough treat for the early adopter...

I was offered 299 plus a $100 credit- I declined, and said I should be able to get it for free- I then was told if i sign up for Sunday Ticket I could receive it for free, I have no interest in ST, so i declined.

Called again today, didn't get any better of an offer, and got a rude CSR -

I'm going to call retention again tonight, and see if there's anyone willing to help -

I've been a customer for 2 years, have Total Choice, HD, and 2 additional receivers including an HR10-250 and H20.

I think my problem might be I'm still under contract - so they feel they can lowball me offers, i'm not sure.

Got two receivers for $99 and she renewed the HD package offer for another year

(first 6 months free, then $4.99 the next 6 months)

Ok, just ordered my HR20. This time I was told it's $99 plus the shipping and tax. the difference from the $299 I was told yesterday was the $99 deal was a swap out of the HR10. Since I can pretty much selling the HR10 on eBay for $300, I decided to go back and do the $299 deal. I didn't want to pay DirecTV $99 and give them the HR10 back. Anyway, not the greatest deal, but I got it and the install is set for Oct 2nd. Now, I have to find a weekend to get on the roof and re-run those nasty wires running all over the place. :)

Hmm. Things worked out well for me. Almost perfect, in fact.

I just called the main DirecTV number 1-800-531-5000 and told them that I noticed they had a new HD DVR that I could use to pick up my local channels in High Definition. The first person was very nice and said that she had no idea about the national release date (but new it was soon) and sent me over to what she called installation support, but what ended up being "extended" support. I spent a while longer with the second person as she had to check on all of the details of the offer. When she returned, I was offered $299 + S&H. I then very nicely asked if there was any way they could waive the $299 with some sort of credit. I must have hit her authorization limit, because I was then transferred to the Installation department (or Installation group).

After a 12 minute hold-time listening to DirecTV ads, the third person had some good news. He initially offered me the HR20 @ $99 + S&H. Again, I ask if they can waive the Charge ($99 this time). He asked how long I've had the HR10 and I indicate about 2 years. He hunts for the update code and after putting the data into the computer, he is able to offer me the unit for $0 + S&H (as many others have received). To his surprise, when he started entering more data into the system, the S&H was free as well. The only unfortunate thing in the whole deal is that the $107.67 total charge for the hardware could not be charged to my DirecTV bill. With College Football and Sunday Ticket, I may have exceeded their per-bill threshold or something (I'm not sure on this). I had to give him a credit card number to prepay for the receiver, but the credit will still show up on my bill. The net result is a 100% free HR20. I even received better news as the deal was finishing up. I get to keep the HR10 and the HR20 is OWNED, not leased.

Needless to say, I'm both happy and surprised with the whole transaction. It did take about 40 minutes of my time (~20 on hold), but with a bit of patience things worked out.

Results:

1 - HR20 receiver
1 - Dish upgrade
Cost $0.00

Plus

- I get to Keep HR10

- NO service commitment requirement. My current commitment is nothing, BUT I've been with DirecTV since early 1996 and really plan to continue to stay with them. Also, I have Sunday Ticket which is (1) paid for this year already (can you say: "covers the commitment" :) ) and (2) exclusive to DirecTV anyway (thus keeping me coming back).

- The HR20 Receiver is owned not lease (this is +/- thing, possible it would be better to be leased)

I just got off the phone with the installation department and was told I could get the HD DVR for $99 plus S&H($19.99). With a $10 credit for 6 months plus 4 months free HD package. CSR said I could only get 6 months credit because I have only been with D for 6 months. I am not on HD now so no trade in and they are moving my existing DVR to the bedroom. I am debating on taking the deal or trying to do better. I mentioned some people I knew were getting the HD DVR for just S&H and he said this was the best he could do.....
He noted on my account and told me he could schedule the install when I committed.

OK!

Got my HR20 today at a local Best Buy. Cost was $299, less a $100 gift card I had. Total was $223 plus change.

Called D* for activation as I already have an HR10. Got it activated. Couldn't stay on hold for installation (son woke up from his nap). Called back and got $150 credit, $20 programming credit for 6 months + a free dish & installation.

Installation is set for 9/27 1-5pm.

Glad to hear you got a good deal. I would like to ask if you and the others being charged to a CC are on their direct billing plan or not. I AM on the direct debit program, and they had no problems noting the 400 charge and then crediting it back last week when I got it ordered (399-less credits, etc.)

I couldn't wait any longer. I'm out of contract and seem to have gotten the standard deal:

$108.16 ($99 plus tax)
108.16 credit
4 month free hd
6 months 10 off hbo
6 months 10 off base package
6 months free showtime

That one guy a few posts up got a $200 instant credit and a $10 for 12 months credit; they wouldn't give that to me. Guess I could have called back but I'm getting old (33).

I'm supposed to give the installer my HR10 but I will not do it. I'm selling it on Ebay. I have an old RCA unit if they want it... we'll see. I guess that comes down to the installer from posts I've seen on this board.

She also said that bigger discounts would be offered after the first of the year when the true "rollout" occurs. I will try AGAIN next week!!!

I think the only reason I received the 200.00 instant credit is because that is what they offered me on my third call a week ago off the price at the time of 399.00 , then today offered 99.00 for the unit and said they would honor all previous offers. Maybe an oversight but I hope not;)

It is just a thought. I thought that if you werent on the automatic payment plan, that may cause them to require a CC. I guess I still don't know.

You did say you still physically go in and pay them everymonth. Albeit, it is with clicks of a mouse.

Here is the deal I got with customer retention. I currently have the H20 receiver (own) and told them that I wanted to swap out for the HR20 because I'm having so many problems with it and that the HR 20 wasn't avvailable when I purchased the H20. Nonetheless, the deal I got was a totally FREE HR20 if I turned in my owned H20. Also they are waving the $19.95 handling fee, giving me 4 months of free HD programming and 6 months of Showtime.

I'm located in the metro Detroit area and the soonest they can get out is October 14th due to availability. I mentioned that I wanted it sooner because of the issues I'm having with the H20 and that I heard they were available at Best Buy. The CSR offered that if was able to purchase this receiver elsewhere, she would credit my account the cost of the recever once activated.

Also I they gave me a number for custmomer retention and it is direct and they answer it on one ring.

So here's what I got from CSR:

Had Total Choice Plus, 2 recievers and 1 D*Tivo (SD) and was out of contract for the past year (2YR long subscriber as of this month).

I purchased NFLST and they gave me the HR20 free. They also threw in the Superfan package for me and gave me the usual 4 months of free HD.

Install in Portland, OR market scheduled for Wednesday, Sept 20. They could have delivered it as early Monday, but Wed worked better for my schedule.

The install also includes a relocation of a reciever.

I got a great CSR (Thanks Laura) who was excited about the HR20 and very up to speed. I have two HT10's, one owned and one leased (a $19.99 shipping only from 2 months ago.) I got 2 HR20's (only was looking for one) for $99 each, relocate my existing receivers, $150 credit and 4 months free HD pack. :D So, final cost was around $20 dollars with tax (and a 2 year commitment of course.) I did have to pay for the receivers on the spot with a CC. I didn't really push for more programming credits--I figured an extra receiver was a bonus. Now my problem is what to do with 4 HD DVR's and 1 HD TV? (I am planning on getting another for Christmas) Good problem to have!

OK.
got the free HR10 last month when I called retention center.
Called today to upgrade, the cost was $99 but they gave me free HD for 4 months, plus $10 off total bill for 1 year. All in all, they paid me $60 to upgrade and I will receive the new box in 2 weeks. Have only been a DT customer since March and only get the basic package, with HD. Pretty cool.. I would recomend that anyone who isn't being offered ant great deals, hang up and call back later.
Retention Center will work great deals!!!

Just called DirecTV...

I spoke to Sherman... who offered me $10 off Total Choice for 12 months, and after I said it was too high, he offered me $100 credit making the HR20 $99.

Said that was the best he could do, I told him that wasn't good enough, thanked him, and that was the end of that.

When I told him I knew people that got better deals than that, he asked if these people were on TiVoCommunity or SatelliteGuys.us.

Hey I just called and I am doing a swap for my owned Hr10-250, and are giving me the new HR20 and dish and install. All for $99. It wasn't free, but I am happy as long as they don't screw anything up and give me the wrong box or dish.

So I just got off the phone with D*. Told them I had bought the HR20 at BB without realizing the deal D* was giving people. We decided the difference in cost was about $180 ($99 upgrade plus $20 shipping vs. the $299 at BB), so they are giving me $20 off my bill for 6 months, then $10 off for another 6 months to equal $180. Maybe not as good as some of you pushed for, but I'm happy.

Live in CT; an "A" list customer; have 2 HD-Tivos (bought at original price) and an H10. Have been calling at least 1x per week speaking w/ regular phone reps...each stated to call back beginning this week to see what the deals/offers would be....spoke w/ rep finally yesterday that did not tell me to go to Best Buy and they said that it was available, but that they had to transfer me to Installation and Ordering Dept....once transferred rep told me to go to Best Buy and pay $399 for each...asked to be transferred to Retention....spoke w/ Hiram who set me up w/ the following deal:

2 HR20-700 Receivers (leased, am still able to keep my HR10s)
1 H20 (still able to keep my H10)
1 AT9 Dish
Free Install scheduled for Oct. 13th
Total = $329

I then asked for further subsidy....gave me $20 off my bill for 6 months ($120)

Total out of pocket $209 (roughly $99 per box, probably b/c they won't give it out free until November)

Now I'll wait until October and see if it was worth it...once installed, I'll probably list my old HR10s on Ebay to recoup more of the cost.

Good Luck, Be Nice...and don't call too many times...

What pisses me off more than anything is that as a paying customer who averages $120+/month you have to haggle w/ them...Totally unfair and unjust...the Cable Companies don't haggle!!!!

I'm an existing customer with an HR10-250. Asked the CSR for a free upgrade to new equipment because I already paid $300 last year for the HR10-250. Here is what I got today:

HR20 for $99 plus $19.95 shipping.
$99 credit to my account. (why they had to do it this way I don't know)
I was able to KEEP my HR10-250 and relocate it to replace another older receiver downstairs.

Total cost $19.95 and install scheduled for Oct 5th in St. Louis area.

Here's my experience today...

I've been with D* for about 10 years. I get Total Choice Plus and have subscribed to Sunday Ticket for as long as they've carried it. I currently have an HD receiver, but no DVR at all.

I called retention 3 times in a row. Was very polite each time. First time, the guy quoted me $99. I asked if there were any programming credits and he said "no, not with this unit". So I thanked him and called back again.

Second call, the rep quoted me $299. When I tried to leave, she said "wait, you've been with us for a while - I can also offer the HD package free for 3 months and $10 off of TC for year". That made the total cost $149. At this point I mentioned dbstalk.com and the deals I had seen there and she got very defensive - "oh, we don't have to do anything that you read there - we're not associated with that web site" and "those people could all be exaggerating". She said that was as much as they could do so so much for that call.

Called one more time, and also was quoted $299. But, she mentioned that since I have been with them for a while, she could knock that down to $99.66 by waiving the "final 2 payments of the 3". "Any chance of programming credits?", I asked. "Sure, how about free HD package for a year, and free HBO for 6 months". She also threw in free SHO for 3 months - I don't currently subscribe to SHO at all. She said this would automatically expire after 3 months - no worry about getting billed for it. So net cost is -$80 (not counting the free Showtime).

Installation is set for Sep 26th.

I'm a newly registered member. I have been monitoring this site for several weeks now for information on the purchase of the new HR20-700. I have been a customer of DTV for just shy of 10 years. I have 3 SD receivers. I just finished up with SLADJA (ID #400519) at DTV in retention (800-824-9081). Bottom line is that I am getting the HR20 for free :blowout: ($19.95 S&H though), 4 months free HD programming, and will work on a much reduced NFL Sunday Ticket package once I get the install scheduled due to the fact that the season is well under way. She said it was available in St. Louis, and she was kind enough to call my local installer while she put me on hold. They do not have it in stock yet, so we couldn't set up an install date. She said to call DTV back periodically, as well as the installer whose number she gave to me, to see when we can schedule the install. She did say that they were guaranteeing nationwide availability now by the end of September. (Take that for what it's worth though given other dates that have been listed here.) Free dish upgrade is included as well. All this with a 2 year commitment on my part of course.

On my first call to DTV, I was given a "deal" of $250 after all the credits. I said OK, note my account. On the second call, I got a bit higher up the ladder and was given an "ultimate deal" of basically $99 after all the credits. I said OK, note my account. I called back today, made my case why I believe I should not have to pay at all (other than S&H of course) based on my longevity with DTV, lease issues, deals being given in all ranges apparently, etc., etc. I will mention I was extremely courteous, polite, etc. with Sladja. She was very nice and professional as well. I did make my points calmly but credibly, from a business standpoint. She understood and was very reasonable in her response. Until today when I was told it was available in my area (even though the installer doesn't have any units......yet), I was not going to get too "aggressive" with bargaining.

She said normal price has now been reduced to $299 (I think), so that is the maximum anyone should be paying with absolutely no discounts/credits, etc. Not sure if that's legit, just what I was told. It appears once again that the roulette game holds true. I would suggest not wasting time with the normal CSRs, but go straight to retention with the above listed number. Be polite though, don't yell, treat it very professionally and business-like. I did not threaten to leave DTV either. In fact, I made it clear that I have been a very satisfied customer of theirs and would like to remain with them. They aren't idiots folks, they know the industry is competitive, especially at this department level. Don't insult their intelligence. You attract more flies with honey than with vinegar, if you know what I mean. If they treat you bad, call back. It appears there ARE reasonable employees at that level.

On the first call, I also talked them into giving me free Showtime for 2 months, HBO for 6 months at $2 per month, and I believe $5 per month programming credit in general for 6 months. All in all, I think I was treated very reasonably in the end and got a very fair deal. Hope this helps someone.

I've been a DirecTV customer since March and I got a non-swap HR20 deal for $99+20 S&H with no haggling at all. I don't feel like trying to screw DirecTV by calling retention because I am completely satisfied with what I pay right now and they top it off by getting me a $300 unit for $99! DirecTV has me as a customer for at least another couple years.

I don't think I (and most of us for that matter) are trying to screw, as you put it, DTV. We are just trying to get the best value for our dollar. If you go into Wal-Mart, or pick your store, and one cashier charges 2.99 for a bag of Doritos, and the cashier 4 lanes downs is charging 17.99 for that same bag, who are you going to check out with? It's about consistency, not anything personal, at least for me it is. I don't want to pay more than I need to for products or services, and competition drives that vehicle.

The deal I received was an HR20-700, new dish, and installation for about $20 (to cover shipping).

They were going to throw in another Tivo unit for my second TV, but as I already have a Tivo I said that I didn't need it.

I guess I should have bartered for some free programming, but I just got off a deal getting HBO for free for six months and money off of my bill on top of that so I went easy on them and just took what they gave me.

Now I plan to sell my old H20 and three LNB dish and use the proceeds to pay for ESPN Gameplan!

Toshiro, as was previously mentioned, no one is trying to screw anybody.
The ultimate goal is that you are satisfied. Job well done.

If you think the box costs D* $300 or a little less so they have profit, you are mistaken. They get these boxes cheap. They make their money on service, not selling hardware. It has always been the standard for this type of service, just as it is in cell phone service. You go into the cell phone store when your contract is ending and walk out with a new contract and a new phone, cost is nothing or minimal.

So I just looked at my account on directv.com; Am I getting two HR20s? I only ordered one.

I'm outside of Philly too. Do you already have an HR10-250? If so, are you leasing or did you buy it? Thanks.

Joe

P.S. I think we need to add some rules to this thread where people state what equipment they currently have and whether it's leased or not. I'm getting the impression so far that the people with leased equipment are getting the $19.95 deals.

I have an the old SD DVR and it's owned.

Not true. I have two old tivo DTV units and I got the first one for $19.95 and the second one for $200 with programming credits of $150. None of the previous units were leased. The CSRs don't really care, they want you to sign up for another two years. The more programming credits they give you the more you will keep the additional programming.

I didn't post this last week (9-08) but I received the $21.46 deal from a CSR located in Canada, I’m in Kansas. I had sent an email to D*TV complaining about the lack of dual buffers in the new HR20's due to come out and was considering switching to Dish. They emailed back and said a CSR would contact me. I missed the call but they left a number to reach them, I ended up with the $21.46 price and 4 months free HD programming after about 30 minutes of talk mostly about what features it had and didn’t have but they couldn't schedule an appointment yet. I called today to see about scheduling and almost got the runaround on price but then I pointed out that I already had a confirmation number on my order and that my October bill already reflected the $21.46 price. They transferred me to the local installation and I got an install date of 10-16 :( but I'm on the waiting list for any cancellations.

Funny bit about the Canadian CSR, we got off subject for a bit and I had to bite my tongue to hold back some innuendo when she asked if I had a webcam. It was an innocent question on her part as the conversation dealt with my calling via Skype and not a phone but the opportunity for a good joke was there, I just didn’t want to cost myself the free upgrade if she lacked a sense of humor.

Should add I'm a long time (8 years) customer who owns 2 Std Directivo's and is a 6 year subscriber to NHL Center Ice and the top programming package.

Hi,

I just got HR20 installed in Santa Clara, CA..
I have two SD TIVO's and swapped one of them out for the new HR20. Of course I get to keep all SD which are owned.

Initially, the CSR told me I could get $299 which was a drop of $100 from the original price. Then looking at my account she said she coupld knock off another $100. But I persisted, and eventually this is what I got..

Free HR20, only 19.95 S&H
4 months $10 off HD programming
6 month $10 off HBO
6 month free SHOWTIME

I am now enjoying my HD programming.. All in all, pleasant experience..

Cheers!

Good call, I was on the phone with a CSR last week and we were talking about Series Links and he informed me that NFL Sunday Ticket would not be recorded by a Autorecord search for a team. I used the Philadelphia Eagles as an example, since they are the reason why I have Sunday Ticket. The rep told me he was a Dallas Cowboys fan, and I went "EWWW", he was NOT pleased, I brushed it off by saying, "Just Kidding" but the conversation didn't get any better after that point. Some people are just too serious about themselves and their teams.

I live in Orange County, CA and here is the deal I got. I've been an 8 year subscriber. I had 3 receivers, with one being a SAT-T60 that I've nursed along and upgraded. It worked for me so no need to upgrade...unitl recently.

I called retention and asked what they could do to keep me from switching to cable. The ultimate deal I got is....

2 HR20's - yes two.
1 H20
4 months free HD
6 months free Showtime
$10/off bill for 12 months.
New AT9 dish and installation.

Cost - 0.00 - she even credited the $19.95 s/h fee.

Installation is set for end of Sept. I just purchased a new Sony SXRD 60" tv, and BB gave me an extra $150 off if I purchased any HD DirecTV receiver. I bought one of their HR20's just to get me started and I plan on returning one of the ones the installer brings as I really only need 2.

The CSR I got was very pleasant. Didn't have to threaten or push to talk to a supervisor. I just asked for what I wanted and waited for the response - some long pauses before the CSR's response, but silence on my part waiting for them to agree seemed to work.

The deals can be had if you get the right CSR. This time I got lucky and got someone who cared about my dedication to D*

Finally got my HR20 installed today!!! which I got at Best Buy $299 and was given the promised $150 credit and $5 off for 6 months on the HD package. She wouldn't give me the $10 off per month for a year because she said that is only for first time DVR users only.
It is funny how they give everybody a different answer and a different deal. I will sell one of my HR10s on eBay to recoup the rest of the cost.

--------
fyi: once a csr makes an offer/ & u don't take it / it doesn't mean it will be available next time you call/ I personally asked that

each deal depends on the csr that takes the call & their decision in the matter. if it is noted each time that u are "shopping" for offers then that can pose a negative view in their eyes. I guess in some case not all csrs read "all" the notes.

Called today, got a male CSR first and the best he could do was the HR20 for 299. He said that there was no way anyone was getting this unit for just the handling fee!

Hung up, called right back and got a female CSR. Asked about the HR20 to upgrade one of my 3 Tivo DVRs and she put me on hold. Came back and said it would be no problem to offer me the unit and install of new 5 lnb dish for just 19.95 with a 2 year commitment!

Install set for 9/26

Any issues I should know about regarding them replacing my current dish? Any cable issues that might come up?

Bad news South Florida

I was scheduled for the installation today. My installer showed up early which was great so I didn't miss Sunday football, the only problem was that 1-He didn't speak any English whatsoever, I'm an anglo living in the land of latinos. and 2-He didn't have the HR20 on the truck. He called his office and his supervisor told him to tell me that they are not installing the HR20 in South Florida because of a problem with the Local HD channels. I called DirecTV retention and their systems were down so they could not help me, but she said she was not aware of any problems with local HD in any area, but said to call back in an hour or two because she needs to speak to the local installation supervisor to see what the problem is and with their systems down they don't have the number. I also asked what I can get for the inconvienence created, and she said nothing, that they are not responsible for screwed up installation departments.

EDIT: I finally got through to retention and their computers were up and I found out that there is NO problem with local HD on the new reciever, it was just a line of BS that I was given for an excuse of why the technician didn't have it on his truck. I am now scheduled for an install on Sept 26th between 8-12, which I am furious about because now I will have missed three weekends of Superfan HD games, instead of only missing one if the installation occurred today. I also placed a complaint against the Miami office as I had additional installation problems, missed appointments, etc. when I got the R15 last year, it took three appointments to get it right and now it is at least two on this install. The local installation office here is abomidable.

I finally took the plunge and made my second call to retention.

Got an extremely pleasant young lady who said my previous rep had noted I was a "very nice guy." Quite a surprise to me, but I do try to be nice.

I didn't get the greatest deal in the world, but I did not demand anything or threaten (Of course, a customer of only 2 months has little leverage.)

I got the HR20 for $99. I had to pay for Superfan to get HD ST, but she gave me the 4 free months of the HD package and then $10 off my bill for 12 months after that. My total cost for HR20 plus SF plus HD package for 16 months=$198. This also gives me a total of 3 rooms with DVRs. If you consider normal price for HD package would be $160 in 16 months, cost of the equipment and SF package comes down to $38. I can live with that!!!

I did not mention deals others had gotten, or even mention web forums at all, because I think the CSR's "Geek Alarm" goes off when you do that. I was just a nice middle-aged guy asking the lady to help me save money, and I'm very pleased with the whole experience. Install is not until Sept. 27, tho. And no, I'm not going to tell you the name of the CSR...!

Hello,

After wasting almost two hours trying to get a straight answer from CSR and retention, I called the Corporate office in California. Got a special toll-free number for the "Office of the President." I called and placed my order directly with Russ. I'm a "A-List" customer (been with D* since 1998), but still wasn't able to get anything for free. Instead, I got the entire upgrade package, including relocating my HR10-250, for $99 + tax. Russ also gave me $10 off my premium services for 6 months, a $60 value. So, total cost was $39. Install is scheduled for 9/23.:)

I currently have one SD DVR and receiver. After multiple calls to CSR I finally got a good deal:

HR20 $99.99 ($200 credit to account)
$10 off programming for 12 months
$10 off HBO for 6 months
Free HD for 6 months
Relocate SD DVR to another room.

The bad part is I have to wait until October 6 for install.

Here is how I did:

Charge to VISA (because of system problems?) $344.45
Credit to DirecTV account -$250.00
Credit for HD pack -$40.00
HBO for $2.00 for 6 months

October 3rd install but will call if they have a cancellation before then.

I get to keep my HR-10-250.

Very nice CSR. Made a comment that he appreciated my patience while he made all the changes. Said they get yelled at a lot.

Current equipment?

What you said and/or asked for?

$10 off for 12 months
Free HD package for 4 months.
CSR was very nice and helpful, but did tell me that "all the people getting the $19.95 shipping/handling deal were getting the HR10-250." Didn't seem correct to me but, I figured I'd call back and try to get some things changed.
I feel I got a pretty good deal, but I am baffled that some folks are having such and easy time getting the $19.95 deal, and some getting much more than that.
Any ideas on what I should do??/

So I wonder how the whole thing works. Obviously there is a "list" price for the unit. And they must have been told that they can feel free to give $100 off that price. But why the variability? I would think if they were told they can give them out just for shipping if they need to to keep a company, more people would have an easier time of getting it. Maybe some of the CSRs really want to do right by the customer and call a supervisor and some just want to get through the day?

there is.. list price $399 - then after 9/13 $299. swaps may be in the future.. but right now since demand is high.. we are not suppose to give for free.. I am so totally overwhelmed at what i am seeing/hearing regarding this. earlier this week before new hr20 completely hit direct sales, options were taken away on free or lower cost of it to us (which makes our life more difficult; & ordering these are suppose to be going thru cust installation support & not retention. retention is used for cancelling your services or reconnectng your acct from disc status. not shopping for better deals on equip. trust me I understand the need for wanting new & better. I want mine too but I am going to let one of ya'll get yours first :hurah: plus my tv died so gives me an excuse to show for a cooler hdtv..

but wait for a couple of weeks for the supply to trinkle in better.. then they will be more at each area for all of us. I feel then d* will be able to offer deals again.. but right now.. it is like easter egg hunting to know what piece of equipment you may actually get when an order is placed.. & if that areas hsp even has it yet.. good luck guys, i'm not fussing but.. hot item, I know I wouldn't be giving 2 out for free they'd have my hide at my ctr. + I can only deal w/what I am allowed to..

Also, certain CSR's only have so much room to work. Some may be able to give it away, and some may only be allowed to do a $200-250 comp range, before having to go through a supervisor. I was told this by my person who set me up, and I believe surfbird mentioned it in one of her previous posts.

Short answer - it all depends on who you talk to. Have you heard that one before? :hurah:

Just called back to place my order for my HR20, the past few times that Ive called they told me that I could only upgrade 1 per 6 months. Well called today to order and she started on the order and she said since you own your HR10-250 you can either OWN the HR20 or lease, it will be free either way, I said I would rather OWN the box.

She said it will be a SWAP. I said ok as long as I OWN the HR20. I then ask her if I could still only upgrade one, and have to wait till 6 months to update the 2nd I have see said yes.
She then took a $99 upgrade fee from me and then credited back to my acct.
Scheduled for Thursday 1-5p

I check my order online.

LINE 1 SWAP REPLACE HR20 IRD QTY 1 $99.00
LINE 2 SWAP REPLACE HR20 IRD QTY 1 $0.00
LINE 3 HANDLING QTY 1 $0.00
LINE 4 STANDARD PROF INSTALL QTY 1 $0.00
LINE 5 DIRECTV 5 LNB MUL SAT QTY 1 $0.00

looks like Im getting both replaced and only had to pay $99 for one which they gave right back to me. Also get to remain as owned equipment.

Im a happy camper now!

Now lets hope they activate the OTA tuners soon.

I have 6 receivers (3 HD Tivos and 3 SD Tivos). I was planning to make the move to Fios TV early next year (when it becomes available in my area). I called DirecTV to ask what is the procedure when I'm ready to cancel. Currently I'm under no commitment. I was transferred to Retention and was offered 3 HR20. The rep said that she would have to charge my credit card for the 3 receivers and then could give me credits back on my account. She asked if I would be interested in that, I told her I need more details. She put me on hold. While on hold, me cell phone lost the signal. I called back and spoke to a different rep who said that he could give me 3 HR20s for $99 each and credit my account for only $200. I said no thanks.

During my 2nd call I forgot to ask about the procedure when I was ready to cancel. So I called back. The rep this time offered 3 HR20s for $99 each with $250 instant credit to my account and a $20 credit for 6 months. I asked him why am I being made different offers. No 2 reps have made me the same offer. He said that the reps have different approval levels so one rep may be able to offer more to a customer than another.

I asked him to note the offer on my account, because I needed to think about it. I was planning to move over to Fios TV, but now I'm not sure. The big reason is the NFL Sunday Ticket plus I was sure I would have a pay for the HR20s. I felt that there was no way DirecTV was going to give me 3 of them without me having to pay something.

In regards to Sunday Ticket, I asked DirecTV last week if I could keep it without having a Total Choice package and was told no.

Can't get $99 because the HD locals aren't in my area. They said since I don't need it to support programing then I must pay $299.

Just called retention again, talked to CSR - 100% no problems didn't even try to say that I had to pay anything for the upgrade, she went straight to FREE.

I said that I ordered the HR10 w/ Superfan and the origional CSR said that since the HR10 didn't have the interavtive capability that there would be a free upgrade to the HR20.. And she said "YUP that's right, let me take care of the order for you!"
So I got charged about $341 and then a credit to the account for $341. Install is 9/30!

I called several months ago about serious rain fade issues. The tech support told me that the AT-9 would help significantly in Florida with all the rain we get. He transferred me to installation, and she suggested I wait until the HR 20 came out and I could get the HR 20 and the dish for free. She put me on the e-mail notification list.

SO....... as soon as I got the e-mail for availablilty last week I called retention directly, and here is the deal she gave me: (I also told her that FIOS is knocking at my door at least once a week to switch to their service)

Free HR20 no shipping charge, no installation charge.
Free AT-9 no install charge.
Free Showtime for 6 months
HBO at $2.00 per month for 6 months
$10.00 off Total Choice Plus with locals for 6 months.

dervari, can you give some more details on your deal?
Current equipment?
Sub for how long?
Current HD customer?
Swapping equipment, etc.?
What you said and/or asked for?
I live just south of Atlanta, and called yesterday - but the deal I got was
$99.00 + tax
$10 off for 12 months
Free HD package for 4 months.

11 year sub - Sep of '95
Current HD Sub - Receiver is an H20 that was free in 11/05
No swap - Keeping my H20
I told them I wanted to know what deals they had. Advised her of Comcast's $99/mo deal for TV/HSI/Voice and that I already had Comcast internet and was thinking of trying their package deal. She "checked" on what she could do and then came back and gave me the whole deal for $19.95.
Getting $10 off for 12 months and free HD for 4 is a better deal in the long run. :) However, my wife hates paying for stuff up front and then realizing the gains over a long time.

I did get $5 off HD for 6 months when I called to complain about TNT/HDNet being pre-empted on Sundays.

It was my guess that ur install date was too soon, which is prob why they did not have the right ird.

It could be worse, ur install date could be somewhere in mid October like i've read from others.

When I got my Sept 21st install date, the csr had said it could have been scheduled sooner, however this was done to give them ample time to actually have the hr20 in stock.

She also stated that on the Work Order it doesn't show the model # just HD DVR. So there's still a chance the installer may not actually bring the right one, in which case i'm to refuse it and reschedule. So we'll see if they actually have the right one.

posted this in another forum....adding it to this one now that I've seen it.

I just finished reading the review and general discussion thread forums so this is my first post. I'm glad I found this website.

First...Great job Earl. I feel like I know you after reading your posts for the last 48 hrs; plus the 3+ years in the other forum.

Anyway, here's the deal I got.
I only have 2 standard DTivo receivers, don't subscribe to HD or any premium lineup services.

I called the CSR through the retention number and told them that I was interested in upgrading to HD and replacing my current receiver with the new HR20. I am not currently under contract.

The CSR offered me the HR20 at $299 with $150 off immediately and then $10 off my bill for 12 months. I asked about the deal for getting it with just shipping and she said that was only for upgrades from the HR10. She also enabled HD programming at $10/mo with the first 4 months free (same as new customer offer).

All in all I'm happy and the install is scheduled next week!

My install date is 10/17, 5 weeks after getting the order set up through a D* CSR.
I called the install company, Ironwood. She told me that was the first available date in my area. Hummm? Asked her if she could fast track me, and she put down on the order ASAP. Hopefully that will work....to be continued...

I tried to swap my H20 for an HR20 and no go with the CSR. Apparently my H20 is owned (got it in February of this year). And she wouldn't sell me an HR20 without an installation, even though she could see I already have all the necessary hardware. Fortunately Best Buy got a couple in stock so I purchased from there.

My experience was very simple. I called customer retention at 800-824-9081, gave them my name and DTV account number and said I had a question for them. Said that awhile back I had purchased a HR10-250. At the time they said that they were eventually going to have HD locals available using MPEG4 and that I would need a new HD-DVR to receive those channels. Told them that I understood that the HD locals were now available in my area (suburb of Philadelphia, PA) and wanted to know if the new MPEG4 HD-DVR was available and if I could take advantage of the free upgrade. The rep. said absolutely no problem but that in order to process the order they would have to charge me $99 but he would then process a credit for $99 as well.

He did that and scheduled my installation for the end of this week. Net is I get the HR20-700, 5 LNB dish and installation all at no charge and I get to keep my HR10-250 which the installer will relocate for me.

On top of that I also told him that I had received a letter from DTV some time ago indicating that I would receive the NFL ST Superfan package for free this year due to the issues that they had with it last year but that I noticed a $99 charge for it on last months bill. He checked and said that they had already issued a credit against it for $49 but he credited the other half of it on my account as well so that it was free.

Very nice conversation and it took all of about 15 minutes. No additional commitments either, he checked his system twice on that point.

Ive read a lot of responses about people who have gotten good deals but have a lot more advanced equipment than I have. I have been with D* for about 4-5 years and still have my original RCA equipment(ie no dvr no hd) I bought at best buy. Has anyone has any luck with deals that have this type of equipment?? I just bought a hdtv about 3 weeks ago.

Part of my problem is im still not sure if i want to get into another commitment with them because im noticing more hd channels with the "other guy" and im not sure how quickly d* will be to catch up.

I recall that last year when I was speaking to a CSR, they told me that they just launched into space two additional satellites and have the capability to add an additional 1500 channels, I'm sure most of those are for locals around the country, but I wouldn't be surprised if a lot are new HD channels on the horizon. The only HD channels that I notice that Comcast has and DTV doesn't is Starz HD on Demand, but I remember reading a huge PDF on the direction DTV is heading and On Demand is in the pipeline, as well as the showcase feature of the new recievers, whatever that may be. I have noticed somethings in my showcase tab, NFL 4 minute game recaps of each game, but not sure what else will be coming down the line.

It may be a little while before DirecTV's HD offerings increase, per this article:

Ok here is my deal
HR-20 for S & H ($19.95)
HD program credit for 6mo ($60.00) then 1/2 off for another 6 months ($30.00)
$10 credit toward programing for 12 months ($120).

I didn't have to return my HR10-250 to get this deal I am keeping it. I am an A-list customer though because of NFL ST and Superfan. My install date is set for Wednesday afternoon the 20th of Sept. I also got a free R-15 additional receiver no shipping or anything on this unit.

So D* paid me $190.05 to take there receiver not bad for 2 phone calls. And yes I did wait untial I had the order confirmed and could see the details and verify my credits so they are on my billing history. I could have got a 2nd HR20 for $99 if I was willing to swap out my HR10-250 but I wasn't ready to part with that thing yet or if ever. Besides I think if I really want another one at some point I can call and probably get some kind of deal on it atleast as good as the $99 that they threw at me the last minute. For those of you who are having trouble just keep trying and you will get what you want it is just a matter of being polite and asking for what you want.

Actually Comcast has 2 really good HD channels, (INDH and INDH2) (http://www.inhd.com/indexFlash.jsp) that D* does not carry and will prob. won't carry cause those channels are owned by Comcast (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/INHD)
I remember reading that D* actually tried to carry them but of course at a high price and D* opted against it.

Will installers actually ask to get the HR10?

If you tell the installer you want to swap out your H20 instead of say the HR10 would they even question that?

Hi Everyone,

I'll start by apologizing. I just don't understand a lot of what everyone is talking about. I just have a couple of quick questions I hope you can answer.

I currently have (2) SD-DVR40 Tivo units, and (1) HR10-250. I am interested in getting one of the HR20-700 units.

1.) I would like to keep my HR10-250, and relocate it to another HD tv in the near future when I purchase one. Can I keep this, or do I have to give it up?

2.) If I do get the HR20-700, do I need the 5lnb dish, and can I keep my current 3lnb dish (store it in my garage or something) in case I choose to use it at another time?

3.) What should I expect to pay for this?

I have been a "D" customer for about 4 years. I currently have the 3 receivers connected, HD package, HBO, Total choice plus, and the east and west networks.

ST = SUNDAY TICKET...short for NFL SUNDAY TICKET D's BIG selling point.

Since you didn't know tht I would assume you don't have it..this would mean the best deal you would probably get would be in the $99.00 range...do NOT accept the Deal if you aren't happy....

The email wasn't anything special at all. It had a link that took you to Best Buy where you could get the HR20 for $399 + tax & shipping. That promotion lasted 10 days. Then you could get it for $299 at Best Buy. Some were reporting that Best Buy would refund the $100 you spent the previous week.

Try calling D* and see if can get a deal. If not, get it at Best Buy and then call D* to see what kind of credits they'll give you. I wound up coming out about $50-60 ahead with my deal, but each offering is different.

Hi everyone. I just found this site yesterday, and I'm finding it very helpful so far. :biggthump

Anyway, just this morning my wife called (she has the day off) and ordered the HR-20. (We currently only have the older Hughes model Tivo.) She was able to get the service rep down to $99 (plus $20 shipping) and then free HD service for 4 months. Apparently the rep said they couldn't give it for free since we don't have the older HD model. Not the best deal in the world, but I was satisfied. Install date is October 5th. Looking forward to it. :)

First off, thanks to everyone on this forum for your input, it saved me quite a bit of cash as I wanted to make this upgrade anyway...

Well, it sounds like we are starting to get a "normal" price established. Here is my deal. (Currently have 1 HD receiver and two old Hughes standard receivers, all owned - Total Choice plus - HBO-HD package)

- 99.99 plus shipping and tax for HR20 and new dish installation
- 4 Months free HD Package
- $5 programming credit for 6 months
- 6 months free Showtime
- $10 HBO credit for 6 months

I tried for more, but she finally pushed back a little (otherwise VERY nice associate named Dorothy). I was able to parlay the fact that I am not currently under a commitment into the additional programming credits.

They started with the typical $299 is a good deal for such a new receiver line, but that quickly changed when she looked at my account and noticed I had been a subscriber for 4 years, but over a year with no commitment. Pleasant experience, and I am happy with the deal. They will be at the house on Saturday for installation.

One other question, I tried to get her to throw in the R15 for free for one of my other rooms, but she wouldn't do it after I confirmed the above deal. Could I still use the code found in the R15 forum to receive that for free?

I complained earlier in this thread about the lack of consistency in D*'s deals. I still fail to see why D* can't simply enact the same policy for all upgraders, with some perks for longer-term customers to keep them.

With that said, I called in because my signal is out, I think from a dish problem. When I mentioned which dish I have (3-LNB for HD), I was offered the following upgrade deal, which I took:

Replace HR10-250 with leased HR20-700 (I'm sure I can finagle a way to keep the HR-10-250 since I own it)
Replace Sammy SIR-TS160 HD non DVR box with leased H20
New AT9 dish
Total for all $199, with install next week.
$50 credit on my next bill
2-year service committment.

I am a seven year D* customer with TC Plus, HBO, and the HD pack. I did not ask or beg, and this was not a retentions call. I was offered this deal. I'll try to reposition the dish myself until the installer can come out and take care of the install of the new dish.

I'm sure D* is keeping tabs on this thread, and this message is for them: I still think a CONSISTENT upgrade package cost is needed and it sucks to have to play CSR roulette to get a good deal.

I have had DirecTV for nearly 5 years now. I do not have Sunday Ticket or any premium channels. Just Total Choice+. I do not have an HR10 or any DirecTV HD equipment. I have been out of contract since January (got a free Series 2 SD Tivo a year and a half ago).

I called up retention and talked to a very nice CSR (after calling 3 times before this) and said that Best Buy had the HR20 in their ad this week for $200. It said "Lease Upgrade". What I didn't say was that it was a typo. The fine print said it was for new customers only. :)

But she matched the price! And she waived the shipping fee. I'm getting it installed on Oct 5th. HD package free for 4 months, yada yada.

So, I was charged the full $320 on my credit card. But I have a $120 credit on my account. I didn't mind paying for it, but I didn't want to pay more than $200. So at least I got that.

The KEY is being HAPPY with YOUR Deal !...and D* of course !

First call to retention, here is what I got.

1 hr20-700 $99.00

1 hr20-700 0

shipping $19.95

at9 dish 0

installation 0

$10.00 off bill for six months.

I have a general comment that I think will help alot in making apples-to-apples comparisons of the deals people are getting. If you're going to quote what deal you got, please provide:

1) how long a directv customer
2) premium channels you have if any (TC+, ST, Superfan, HBO, etc)
3) are you upgrading from an HR10
4) are you out of contract
5) anything else I'm missing that could be a factor?

Just had an HR20 installed in the Houston area. Works great. I had a 250 that I owned and was given a $99 upgrade price. Because of run around I was given about this DVR by D* in June, they gave me a $100 credit towards upgrade. In other words - no charge for this upgrade! Included satellite and DVR professionally installed.

Works great - no issues.

Sorry, I got the impression that the things I listed did make a difference in the deal given by the CSR. For example, it seems that ST subscribers often get a free or $19.95 deal. Do you disagree?

If you're kidding, my apologies. (I didn't see any smilies :) )

After seeing some of the improvements with the 0xCC release and a willingness to get these patches out fairly quickly, I decided to take the plunge. Although, I'm still wondering how I'll adjust to the new interface and, more importantly, to the lack of dual buffers!

Here are my results:

I called in to the "you're a preferred customer" number.

When I started, I told the CSR that I wanted to inquire about 2 items - a bill credit that hadn't shown up yet and possibly getting some new equipment.

I started out with trying to get a promised credit applied for the STSF. I had received a letter about this back in January with a promise to get a credit of $99 in the spring - it never materialized. When I saw the STSF charge on my bill this month, I figured I should chase it down. After telling me that he had to put me on hold before applying the credit, he came back to tell me that since I had gotten STSF free the previous year as part of a promotion, he was not going to give me the credit this year. After I reiterated to him that I didn't ask to get it free this year but, rather, was just holding them to the unsolicited offer they made to me and another short hold, he applied the credit.

We then moved on to the new equipment. I told him that I had been waiting since they first made the HD Locals available in my area to get hooked up with them. I explained that I only had one HD receiver and it was not capable of getting those HD locals so, I had been holding off until the new receiver was available. I related to him that 2 of my co-workers had recently called in and had been scheduled for the new DVR installation so, I assumed it was now available and asked what I needed to do to get an installation appointment (I deliberately tried to stay away from a conversation involving "I saw on this website that..." and generally tried to play the dumb customer role).
At this point, he told me that he couldn't help me with that as he had been told to refer any HD receiver based inquiries from existing customers to the "Installation and Delivery" department. He did share with me that the unit was listed as a $299 cost for new subscribers and $99 for existing.

He then transferred me over to the other department. The CSR I spoke to next, first told me that it would cost me $299 to get the HR20. Then, after I told him that the other CSR had said $99 for existing customers, told me that he could give it to me for the $99. Directly after that, and without me really pressing him, he told me that if I waited a few more weeks I could get it for free. When I asked why I had to wait, he told me that all existing HR10 customers will be getting a letter from D* offering a free upgrade to the HR20 in the upcoming weeks/months (as the rollout progesses from west to east - in his own words) since the HR10 was going to be obsolete soon.
We finally got down to business. He placed me on hold for a few minutes to "check my account status". After coming back, he told me that if I elected to charge the $99 now, he would credit it back on my next bill. I agreed and scheduled an install for next weekend. While he was writing up the order, I asked if D* had any other specials or offers he could extend me. He put me on hold and came back with a $20 credit for the next 6 months.

So, the total outcome of my 1 call:

- Free STSF (from their offer letter).
- Free HR20 (after bill credit of $99).
- Free Upgrade to 5LNB dish and relocation of HR10.
- $20 credit for 6 months.
- No mention of extended commitment (this may be due to the ST promotion from last year that locked me in already)
- No mention of shipping charges and none recorded on on-line workorder

As a side note, at no time did I really press the issue or become combative or confrontational with either of the CSRs. Both were very pleasant to deal with and seemed halfway knowledgeable - although, I am interested to know if anyone else has heard about the free upgrade letter for HR10 to HR20. When he told me about it, there was something "off" in the way he presented it that made me wonder if it was true or not.

Service since 2000. TCP. HD. ST & STSF.

Called Retension tonight and talked to a very professional & knowledgable CSR. A little background on what I currently have: 1 T-60 DirecTivo, 1 A-50 & 1 Broken Samsung HD Receiver. I have Total Choice with HBO & the HD Package and not under contract. I don't have ST or any other HD DVR (as shown above). I didn't threaten to leave, I just wanted to replace my broken HD receiver that I had purchased at a local retail store.

1st Offer:
1 HR20-700 $99.00
shipping $19.95
at9 dish $0
$10.00 off bill for 12 months
$5.00 off of HD package for 6 months

Once I heard this I asked about getting a 2nd HR20 to put on my other HDTV. He said he'd see what he could do and came back a couple minutes later with:
1 hr20-700 $0
1 hr20-700 $199 + tax
shipping $0
at9 dish $0
$10.00 off bill for 12 months
$5.00 off of HD package for 6 months

He said he could go as low as free on 1 HR20 but could only get $200 off the second. I told him that this seemed very reasonable and gave him my Credit Card number.

Install is scheduled for 10/7. He offered me 10/5 but I chose to have it all installed on a Saturday morning instead.

As others have done, I was very polite and got a deal that works for me.

Good Luck!

I made the mistake of buying the box first and activating it. I called them twice tonight and explained that I was considering buying a second box to add before my installation and that I heard about credit offerings and such.

I was offered nothing for my first box and $10/mo in credits for the 2nd box for $299 + shipping. They like to remind me that box is "actually $750" or something like that. Oh well.

I was offered a better deal when I upgraded my SD receiver for the HD receiver.

Well, this morning was my HR20 install date. 1st thing I did was to take a look at the box of the HDDVR. Yes, it was hr20 (thanx Earl for the pix).

We go to get started, and he tells me that my current Zinwell 4803 4X8 Multiswitch doesn't have enough power and he needs a 6X8 multiswitch (www.dbstalk.com/showthread.php?t=52974).

He calls other installer and tells me he's going to another county to get it and he will be back in 45mins.

45 mins go by and I realize he's not coming back. I call retention, retention calls local office, local office calls installer.

Installer responds that he's not coming back because he doesn't have the 6X8 multiswitch. (luckily, I read that the 5lnb dish (AT9)will work with the 4x8, however some limitations)
At this point I just want that hr20 in my house connected, regardless of type switch. So I say to both of them (csr and local office scr) that I don't care about type of multiswitch just install the hr20 and I'll reschedule for the multiswitch.

Local office csr contacts installer, installer agrees to come back from 1-2PM.

Got the name and number of the local office csr and will call to verify.

For now, it's a waiting game.

For all prospective HR20 owners, (except those that have the AT9 already, from prior HD install) dish call back retention and make sure on ur work order it states that u need a 6X8 Multiswitch.

EDIT: Installer did come back with the 6X8 and installed HR20. I am very greatful for finding this site, cause without it I would have had to pay $99-$399 for HR20

Hi all. New member. I got off the phone with directv customer retention.Talked to Chris from Idaho. I had no trouble getting the new hr20. I just told him I was considering my HD options. Told him Time Warner just took over Comast in my area and offered me $39.99 a month for all programing (including hd package) and the hd dvr for a whole year ( cause i was a dtv customer ) I didnt really haggle all that much or threaten to leave. He told me about the box etc $ launching 2 more sats next year. Then he said what if I offer you the box for 19.95 and credit you the 299. I went quiet for a minute then he said plus a $20 credit on my premier programing for 6 months. I said ok. I know others got more credits but I didnt want to push too hard and he said he was over his credit as it was ( who knows) Oh and yes Free dish and install set for OCT 11 (im in cali) .I also ordered the h20 for 99 spread over 3 months on my bill. Im pretty happy with what I got. I really dont mind the 2 years anymore. Fios might not be here before then anyway. Good luck to the rest of you who have yet to call

Well, the installer showed as promised @2PM (said between 1 & 5) so far great....first thing he said when he got out of his van was that he has had better days and that he does not feel well. I believed him, he looked as though he had a hell of a night or something. Anyway, nice enough fellow. Here is the good part; I had called retention 4 times, being very nice each time. Final offer was 99.00 for the hr-20 and a 200.00 instant credit plus some programming credits. I paid 107.00 on visa at time of order now the installer shows up, says he has two hr 20's if I need them and since I had paid already I should go ahead and take both, no problem I said. Asked him if he brought the multi switch and of course he did not. Wasn't on the work order and he did not have one on him. Said if I waited a week or two to reschedule that they would install the entire systm with switch for free. No way, not waiting. So he installed the nw dish, comes into the house with both new units (and they are hr-20) but said activation has been down all day and if I can connect them up and call activation tomorrow. Verified I have service on my hr-10 ( did not even ask to take it). So I have two units but not activated. Hopefully tomorrow when I connect and call to activate the hr-20 all will be good. btw, he says if he comes backwith the multi switch it will be 65.00 service call.:(

I called customer retention and mentioned that I heard that HR10-250 owners, which I am (bought through customer retention about a year ago for $200), are getting the HR20 free with a $19.95 shipping charge. With no hesitation she aggreed with me and set up an appointment for next week. She said I would see a $199 credit on my first bill and $66.33 charge for the next three months. When I asked about the shipping charge she said she was going a waive that charge.

Last night I got a deal of a lifetime. I'm a 3 year customer with basic SD package, a Hughes Tivo, and I am out of contract.

After reading 600+ post and talking to surfbird, I decided that the best deal would be $150 for a HR20. CSR's are only able to give free HR20's to people that are upgrading HD equipment. Here is the deal I got:

1 - HR20-700 $0
1 - AT9 Dish $0
Shipping $0
$10 off bill for 12 months
Free HD for 4 months
HBO & Showtime $2 a month for 6 months
Install date 9/25

$0 charged to my card and saved $280 on discounts.

All I said to the CSR was that I was looking into HD, I have been happy with my service, but I can get a free HD DVR from Dish, what deal can you give me? I was expecting and ready to pay $150 but was pleasantly surprised when she said that she would enter it in the system as an upgrade from my old Tivo. Then I asked for the other discounts at the end. It took a total of 10 minutes on the phone. 1 call only and she was very nice.

I'm brand new to this forum, but I've been watching for a while.

I'm going to call D*, but I want to be sure of what I want. Can you guide me?
So many model numbers, so confusing. I really like tivo and their interface, is there no way to keep DTV and have hd tivo?

I'd like an HD-DVR but I don't know which one I want????
If I ask for a deal on the HR-10-250 or whatever is the latest, will it work with the 3lnb sat?
Oh, I'm in Los Angeles, and I have a 3-lnb sat. and an separate hd antenna.
I've got a top of the line package with them including NFL and MLB so I'm on the A list.

I've read that there are no wishlists on these new non-tivo boxes, is that true? That's a big drag. I assume there are at least Season Passes yes?

I apologize for being scattered. I will definitely report on my conversation with them but would love some guidance first. (not a great negotiator)

Thanks in advance

I called to see what offers I could get to switch from Comcast. I had D* three years ago and liked the service, but Comcast started offering my locals in HD along with a no cost (besides monthly fee) HD PVR so I switched.

My Comcast bill keeps getting higher and higher so I decided to look back into D*. For the same channels I will be paying $20/month less plus we will get XM which we want.

I called D* and was offered the HR20 for $200 until they looked me up. Since I was a customer in the past I am not eligible for any discounts now so the price would be $300. I asked why they didn't want me back as a customer and they said that was all they could do since I am already a customer. I tried calling six times (twice to retention, you know, since I am supposedly still a customer according to them) and got the same story every time.

After some arguing they offered $300 plus $60 off my bill. Still not even close to the $200 a 'new' customer could get it for.

Now I realize most of you that got great deals (free or $99) are upgrading from an older box that you paid a lot of money for. I don't expect free, but $300 is a joke when they offer it to others for $200. I would have done $200 since in 10 months it would be paid off vs. staying with Comcast.

The night after all of those calls I noticed online that it said the box would be $200 for a new customer with a $150 rebate. The rebate is $10/month off your bill for 15 months. Of course as soon as I entered my info it said I was not eligible since am a customer.

I end up using my wife's information since she was never tied to our old account. She has a different last name than I do and everything went through fine. If they do tie us together and deny the rebate I am ok with the $200, but if I do get it for $50 I will be happy.

The install is next Wednesday. I already have 4 RG6 runs to my garage roof so the wiring is already done. 2 to my HDTV, one to a bedroom and one to my Vista media center in the basement. I hope it goes well and I don't regret this... :)

I'm getting mine installed tomorrow. I ended up getting it for approximately $50. They agreed to the $19.95 (shipping) deal, but because I took advantage of the free D* Tivo a few months ago they couldn't just give it to me for free. So they had to charge my credit card the full $299, then give me $299 credit back to my D* account. Only problem there is that I have to pay tax on the full amount instead of just on the shipping amount. So instead of $2.00 tax, it ends up being $23.00 tax. But, I won't complain about getting something like this for less than $50.

You can get two. I called them up about adding a 2nd box and they quoted me a price and everything. I declined because $515 for two boxes is too expensive for my liking.

Like the rest of you, I'd been calling retention periodically over the last several weeks, spinning the roulette wheel of information. I finally spoke with some one in retention who was able to process an upgade for the HR10 which I own. Along the way, I was offered random amounts of credits and bonuses. When they were good, I'd ask for them to be noted on my account, since I needed to "think about it".

At no point did anyone in retention who I spoke with admit that there was any offer to get the unit for only $19.99 s&h, which I thought was really strange. Maybe it's not being offered in the SF bay Area?

When I was able to order on Sept 13th, here is the deal I got:
$299 HR20 + $19.99 shipping and handling (what? the installer is bringing it?)
AT9 dish, 6x8 multiswitch, install
The $319 will be divided across my next 3 bills.

$250 one-time credit on activation
$10/month for 12 months credit
Free HD package for 4 months

In total, they paid me $67 to take the unit, and be under contract for 2 years. There goes any leverage I have against retention!

The install date was yesterday, 9/21, 1 - 5pm. The installer showed up at 2:30pm, but did not have a multiswitch on the work order. I called retention, and the nice person I spoke with reassured me that my existing multiswitch would work. I told him there was no way it would work with the new AT9 dish, and that I would be out my locals that I now get over diplexed OTA if he proceeded with the install. After putting me briefly on hold, he came back and apologised, and said that I did indeed need a new multiswitch, which should have been on the work order (I have two DVRs and one additional HD receiver). Since the installer would have had to reschedule, and the next available appointment was three weeks away, he told me that if I wanted to, I could go to Best Buy and purchase my own, and that D* would credit me the purchase price. That was nice!

It turned out that the installer found an extra unit in his truck, so the drama was averted. We had a tough time installing the AT9- it's HUGE! If I wasn't actively helping him, I doubt he would have been able to pull it off.

Powering on the unit, it came up, and within 5 minutes began downloading the new software without needing the 02468 hack.

Activation was very glitch-laden- much more so than any other activation I've done. The unit kept cycling between authorized, not authorized for my premium channels, not authorized for DVR, and random combinations of the above. On probably the 7th or 8th try, everything came up OK.

I'll try to find some time to post a review in another thread, but so far, I've ran into the same annoyances as everyone else- Dolby Digital is not working via TOSLink, and I get garbage occasionally on my MPEG4 locals, even though the signal strength for that bird is in the high 90's.

Longhorn & others,

I tried to order two HR-20's but they say the system wont let them do it. Was one a replacement for another HD box?

I just explained that I have 2 TV's that can display HD and asked if there was something we could do to get an HR20 on both. The second TV is using an old Sony SD receiver that I've had around since I got D* nearly 6 years ago.

The CSR did mention a couple times during the call that I had been a "Long Time Customer". This is actually the first "Deal" that I have ever worked with them. All the equipment that I have owned up to this point had been purchased at local electronics stores.

This was my 3rd call. I had 1st called about 10 days prior and was offered $100 off the HR20. I told her no thanks and hung up. I called back the next day and the CSR commented that I had just called the day before according to their notes. He also offered the $100 off and then finally offered $200 off but the price was $399 at that time. I decided to take a little break from calling since they were "On to Me". Maybe that helped. The CSR that gave me the deal never mentioned anything about the previous calls I had made.

Hope this helps.

I like how you imply that everyone else is trying to "screw" Directv. I tell you what, let me call RETENTION and if they offer me credits, I'll take yours as well. It doesn't cost them a cent to offer new deals every now and then. We are essentially like cable customers who use their equipment and must return in when the service is over. Why should I pay them more money than the already expensive monthly charges? Good luck to you!

Almost Identical deal and conversation with Retention. I have install scheduled for 9-29. I will however call and make sure the 6x8 multiswitch is on the order as well.

No one should feel bad about calling Retention, and no one should criticise another for calling Retention.

I emailed DTV asking about discounts on the HR20, and they called me on the phone leaving a message. The callback number they left on the message was the Retention number.

I had been a customer for less than two months and they themselves told me to call Retention! They are the ones who can give you deals, that's all.

Question for you? I read what you said here and called back to make sure the work order was correct and that the installer would have a 6x8 Multiswitch with him for my install on Tuesday and I was told I don't need to have the 6x8 multiswitch because I only have two DVR's connected to my dish, and she told me that the dish itself has a built in mutiswitch and that the multiswitch I have would work.

Since this is the second appointment I have for installation I don't want this one to be a no go because they don't have the right equipment with them for the second time. How many units do you have connected to the dish? Like I said, I will have only four cables, two to the R-15 DVR and two to the HR20. Am I going to need the 6x8 multiswitch? The multiswitch I presently have has three connections from the dish along with one for an external attenna, and the other side has four connections that go to the units.

Install went great. Not at home now but will post company later this afternoon.

Company was EHP (Electronic Home Products). Knowledgable installer and everything went great.

Just had a most pleasant conversation with customer retention. They're selling me the HR 20 for $107.91 ($99 + tax), letting me keep my HR 10 (which I received free a couple of months ago as a part of their Sunday Ticket promotion), and crediting my account $100. I didn't have to cajole, beg, or threaten to bolt for Dish or Cable. I was initially offered the above deal with a $50 credit. Asked if there was anything else that could be done to bring the price down. He tried to give me $10 off each month for a year, but found I already had that. As soon as he saw he couldn't do that for me, he gave me the $100 credit. And installation is scheduled for next Friday.

All in all, I couldn't be happier. $7.91 for the new HR 20 is absolutely fabulous. And in case I have the kind of trouble others have reported, I've still got my HR 10 as a fall back.

As for me, I've been with Directv for about 6 years now, had NFLST for the same length of time (actually my first subscription with Directv was for ST alone since I didn't have a clear view of the satelites then - I put the dish on top of my van and parked it in front of the neighbor's house where there was a good view on Sundays!), Total Choice Plus, HBO and (only recently) the HD programming package.

My first post, but I've been reading for the last couple weeks.

I ordered my HR20 today. I am a 10 year DirecTv customer which Kimberly in Retention took note of. I have never had a DVR. She said they were willing to "work with existing customers" to keep us as customers. She offered me $150 off of the unit and about $100 in programming credits, so I got my unit for roughly $50. This includes free AT9 dish and free install. I'm not a hard negotiator so I took her offer and remained polite.

The earliest install date for my area is 10/16 so I need to wait almost a month to get it.

That csr may be correct but I suggest u post ur question, for Earl and others to reply to on this "sticky" which is just for the 6X8 multiswitch topic (www.dbstalk.com/showthread.php?t=52974).

Here's what I have. One HR20= 2 lines, One Tivo=2lines, One non-dvr IRD=1line, One Tivo=1line

BTW, ur doing the right thing by finding out what is needed b4 they come out. I found out the hard way. I suggest others do the same as u.

Thanks, Yeah well since this is now the second installation date, I want to make sure it goes correctly. Can you imagine my horror last Sunday when the installer came out at 10am, my appointment was for 1-5pm. I was like "Great, I'll have it installed before football on Sunday afternoon" The tech gets out of his van and comes and looks at what needs to be done as far as the moving of the R-15 and goes back out to his truck and looks and looks and is tearing it apart, and then looks at me and says, I don't have the HR20 on my truck, he didn't even have an HR10 on his truck. Needless to say I was not pleased at all, especially now that instead of missing only one Sunday Ticket in HD, I will have missed three. I did get six months of Showtime for it however.

Not a great deal, but an ok one I think. Called retention and was able to get the

HR-20 $299 - $100
AT-9 dish $0
Std HD receiver $0 and move the original

$20 off bill for 6 months. Net $79 plus tax

Actually, my bad, after re-:read:ing that 'Multiswitch Sticky' thread, that CSR u spoke to may be incorrect after all. Here's the 1st post by Earl (www.dbstalk.com/showthread.php?t=52974):
My contact from DirecTV has informed that the only multiswitch that is 100% compatible with the AT9 dish is the Zinwell WB68 (as of 2/14/2006)

The 6802 that some of us (including myself) works today... but down the road when additional items are implemented, we will have problems.
This "fact" is not a surprise to most... it is just that over the past few months, people have had the 6802 installed and it worked fine... thus prompting the confusion that maybe it was just a slight model number tweek.

So... those of you that don't have an AT9 dish installed. Demand a WB68, or at least in writing from the installer company they will return with a WB68 if all they have is a 6802...

If you already have a 6802... not sure what we can do yet.

Funny thing is, I read many posts by Surfbird (www.dbstalk.com/member.php?u=26266), a retention csr and a DBSTalk member, and on her profile it says "ka/ku dish" .

And, I was always like, I wonder what that "ka/ku" is for? Cause, from chatting with her I know she is yet to receive the HR20, so I figured it was something I did not need.

Well, it turns out that "Ka/Ku" is the name of the bands for the AT9 dish (www.solidsignal.com/prod_display.asp?PROD=AT59). And it's even written on the Zinwell 6X8 WB68 Multiswitch

DIRECTV Five LNB Ka/Ku Dish Antenna for MPEG-4 Compression HD Programming (AT9) (www.solidsignal.com/prod_display.asp?PROD=WB68)

According to Wiki "Subscribers must acquire a new set-top box (the H20 receiver or HR20 DVR) and a 5-LNB dish (referred to as a "Ka/Ku" dish) in order to receive the new programming encoded with MPEG-4. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DirecTV)"

Also, I recall the installer telling me that the reason D* does not include it in the Work Order, is that 'if they can save money they will'.

Conclusion: Calebrot, I could be wrong here but u do need it. Get ready to call retention again, lol.

Well I called and spoke with a CSR today and was told, "You called yesterday and it was no yesterday, nothing changed", I said I was just making sure because my brother that lives in Miami had a problem because they didn't have an 6x8 multiswitch. She then transfered me to Installation support and they looked at the work order and it was added yesterday, so the installer should have one with him or her when they arrive Tuesday morning. From what I read on the other thread, it is definitely needed because the current 3x4 that I have doesn't supply the Mhrtz bandwith that is necessary.

they never said anything just asked the model # (which I had to repeat several times ) and turned it on for me

then call back & ask if any of your receivers show up as leased or owned.. you might be in for a surprise/ if so then you need to contact access card distribution team to show proof of your equipment. it will be up to them to switch if purchased thru a retailer. I don't know their procedures. I'm not trained in that nitch. just know that they deal with some of those issues.

sorry guys.. laying low.. just bought new car & hunting down a new TV... :hurah: perfect time to be hunting a new hdtv RIGHT!! :hurah: THought so..

ok. list of stats.. first I have the h20 & a kaku dish ( aka mpeg4, 5lnb & sometimes known as a at9 but u won't hear me call it that) the is the "only dish" that is used for the hr20.. it does have "multi switch"in it.. but the 6x8 multi-switch that is shown in the "training manual" (boyfriend tech) & trust me I use some of that info there too.. "thank god" extra knowledge is useful for all of us here :nono2: it shows a "wide band" multiswitch.. which will make it compatable for mpeg 2/4 & stand def.. all orders I show that I have ordered & look up in acsr (not all levels can check this software) show 6x8 multswitch which brand I guess depends on the hsp.. I can check the truck later to see what brand mine guy uses if that helps any..

oh, future reference.. retention csrs are trained in all levels, (accept acdt) tech & advanced tech before reaching their levels.. so hopefully they/we all know enough to resolve issues for all. & by the way I miss my :free: button. that got yanked away about 2 weeks ago the 13th to be exact.. so if you see "free"getting harder you know why.. it didn't just happen to me but alot other that had "certain" levels of credit value they could use. lots of luck *

Asked him if he brought the multi switch and of course he did not. Wasn't on the work order and he did not have one on him. NO NO switch does show on w/o info..
but said activation has been down all day and if I can connect them up and call activation tomorrow. NO NO activation is never down.. even if system is quirky we have to fill out downtime forms & supervisor has to enter them in another type system\
btw, he says if he comes backwith the multi switch it will be 65.00 service call.:& again no no.. call cis & tell this to.. they are suppose to deal w/installer issues but retention does also.. I wish I could box that techs ears for you.. sorry about that type work. (

1. depends on if locals available in area then "swap" is the term wo uses but our system tells us that is to swap rooms if customer wishes.. so we have to ask you if it is being placed in another room.

2. all the tech is going to do is add that dish w/the rest of his collection of not ever being used again dish (unless he is a ebayer then he'd probably be selling there or to one of his other friends) sorry.. but I'd keep it.. you never know. the kaku's are a pickey sort.. line of sight has to be identical to be able to get everything you need.. r pixelation can occur.

3. depends on csr. letters, emails or other things that can alter the person who is doing the order. basically $0 to $299 my philosophy on this one.. because the demand is so great.. that is why offers are getting harder unless D* contacts you.. wait a few weeks & then numbers should be better when the stocks fill up more..

good luck folks.. I am debating about calling my order in.. "should I call retention" sorry bad joke from me.. LOL.. trust me, I think I could get mine sooner.. but I'll share... I won't order it yet so ya'll can get one first..

After 4 tries I finally got someone in retention that was willing to listen and discuss/negotiate. I had an HR 20 from VE that I had not yet activated. The past 4 CSRs were fairly firm saying $299 and that is it. Could be because I have 18 months left on a 2 year commitment from the H20 purchased 6 month ago...

The deal was --

$250 credit against the first HR20 (because of the HR10), when activated. Get to keep the HR10. You might see it on E-Bay.

$20 per month (for 6 months) on the second unit when activated.

Been a customer for 5+ years, never have gotten anything from retention.
Package Total Choice Premier with locals and HD.

Did OK but this ridiculous having to beg on what was originally promised when D* stated that they would be going to MPEG4.

Ok - so I called retention and have a deal that I'm happy with.

$250 credit upon activation of a new HD DVR
$5 off TC Plus for 6 months
free Shtowime for 6 months
HBO for $2/mo for 6 months

I already have a Hr10-250 and will be adding a second HD DVR (either the hr20 or hr10) and currently have NO satelite installed - I just moved to a new house. They said that I could just pick the HD DVR up at my local best buy (for $299) to avoid the $19.95 shipping charge.

I just moved to the Syracuse, NY area which won't have HD locals over the sat any time soon, so I'll have to rely on OTA for them, which is fine. But if I get the HR20-700, the OTA tuners are still disabled as far as I know, meaning that I WON'T be able to get any HD locals on that receiver. Interestingly, when asked about this very issue, the (otherwise helpful) retention rep swore that the OTA tuners have never been disabled!

I've read here that the tuners should be enabled in October, but the Directv website states that it will be "by the end of the year." I can live with October - not any longer than that though.

Another option is just to get another HR10, but the only place I can find them locally is Circuit City. Will I still get the $250 credit if I buy (lease) the unit from CC as opposed to Best Buy? Since the rep specifically told me to get it from Best Buy, I'm a little leary about possibly screwing myself out of $250. Is there any advantage to the Hr20 over the HR10 in markets like Syracuse that won't have Mpeg4 locals in the forseable future? Are there other Mpeg 4 national channels?

My last question is in regards to which dish I'll need. If I do get the HR20, will I need the 5lnb dish since I won't be getting locals over the Sat anyway? or could I use the smaller 3lnb dish?

Thanks in advance for any help or advice!

Some suggestions:

Get the HR20. First you can use your TV tuner for HD till the OTA tuner in HD20 gets turned on. Sure you won't be able to record your locals in HD till then but its only temporary.

You will need the AT9 antenna at some point next year so you might as well get the HR20 and the dish now - Why have to go through a second service call to install the AT9 at a later date., Remember D* will be switching all HD to the new sats next year with MPEG4 so you will need the HR20 then anyway.

Just my humble opinion.

Just got off the phone with retention

Got the HR20-700 for $99 plus tax

I ordered the HR10-250 through retention on 8/29 for free so I was actually a little surprised that I would be able to get another HD DVR so soon. All I did was say that I was interested in the new HD DVR receiver and wondered what kind of deals are available. Off the bat she offered $99 to swap my HR10 (I've only had it for a week). I told her that I still needed it and she said I could keep it anyway. Since I got 4 months of HD for free, 6 months of SHO for free, and $50 off SuperFan on my last order I wasn't able to get any other programming discounts. But, how can I complain? I've gotten 2 HD DVRs for $99 in less than a month.

Installations scheduled for Fri. Oh yeah, I've been with DTV for about 6-7 years, and have the NFL Ticket.

As you can see, I live in Massachusetts. Last August, I got the H20 and HR10 and the 5 LNB dish, all for the installation fee of $20. Last Friday, the HR10 died from heat exhaustion (overheating). Spoke with D* today and was transfered to a technician. It was determined that the receiver was gonzo. So, he said he would send a replacement. I asked for the HR20 which he said couldn't be guaranteed and then we went to the subject of an upgrade. The price he gave me was $99 including installation. Tried to talk him down to no avail and I finally relented. But then he said that he could only swap out the H20 which is not what I wanted, having a bad HR10 especially. So, got transferred. Next person came on and I was able to get a $50 taken off for being a long time customer(A list). then we got to the subject of swapping receivers. I happen to have three HD receivers, my Samsung is upstairs with a non-HD tv and have the H20 and HR10 downstairs connected to one HD TV. First, she said, for the same price, D* would swap out both the H20 and H10 with two HR20's. However, I mentioned that I would have a conflict with the remotes for the two HR20's. So, finally, it came down to the swapping the H10 for the HR20. Lastly, she said there would be a $20 installation fee (can't just send me the unit) but finally waived that.

Of course, now I wonder if I should have taken the two HR20's.

"guy thing gotta be good" but he was very impressed on how the signal is strong.. states that the bband connector usually makes your signal lower on the h20 & even hr10-250 but w/this new ird it peaks in high 80s- 90s in our area.. example the h20 in my den peaks at 78 but the d11 in daughters bedroom peaks past 90 I think he stated a 18-20 increment in difference on the other systems.. so I guess this is a good sign for this new ird/ hope to hear more good things & I am really debating on ordering mine.. even if I have to only have 1 line in it for now.. he wants to "fish" new wires himself & they have been packing the loads high lately..

____

from what I gather (when I have time to read up on this subjec) the ota tuners aren't disable. but the software isn't ready so you can use this feature properly - like the other member stated Oct? I believe that is what I am understanding too. but truthfully, if the csr isn't too techno or litely geeky on the new ird yet.. it would be easy for them to not know exactly.. it is kinda hunt & peck on info.

However, I mentioned that I would have a conflict with the remotes for the two HR20's.
Garrry

Why would you have a conflict? You can set up the remotes to have different signals, even operate both with one remote. If you RF, each RF code is different. Chances of same code are VERY slim.

About a week-and-a-half ago, I started calling the retention department, trying to get the "$19.95 shipping and handling only" deal that has been frequently posted here. (I have been a steady customer for over 8 years and I subscribe to Total Choice Premier.) I wanted the new dish (AT9), installed, and I wanted an HR20.

First two times I called, I could get no better than the $299 deal. The third time I got an offer of $299 minus $100 credit. Finally, the fourth time (over a period of 5 days) I was offered $99 (charged to my credit card) minus a service credit of $10/month for six months. THAT was a deal I could live with (net $39 plus about $8 sales tax), so I took it.

The CSR entered my order (and the service credit, thank goodness) but their computer system would not recognize the work order for the purposes of scheduling the install!!! The issue with my work order (at least partly) had to do with the fact that the $99 deal is for a "complete HD upgrade" (AT9 dish plus MPEG4-compatible receivers). But I only wanted to "swap" my HR10-250 for an HR20, I didn't want to replace my other (non-DVR) HD receiver (an LG 3200A). The CSR seemed to feel that the computer system was balking because my order was "incomplete".

The CSR ended up canceling my order, entered a "manual intervention ticket", and said they would call me back within 24 hours. Well, they never called, so I called them ... three more days and three more calls and I finally got a CSR who was able to reinstate my order and schedule an install (for tomorrow morning, Tuesday 9/26).

One oddity remains: When I look up my "order ticket" on the DirecTV Web site, it shows "item canceled" for every item except "professional install". I wonder just what tomorrow morning's installer thinks he is going to install?

I called back today and they still say you can not order 2 HR20s.

They also said no one is getting them for free.

So I guess some of you that have posted your deals, I must be missing something.

Anyone know a good CSR to call?

Is there ANYONE who doesn't have a HR10 getting the HR20 for less than $299?? It seems they just don't want to deal with me since I don't have an HR10. They keep quoting me the $299 price (best offer: $299, split over three months, and 4 months HD Package for free...no go.).

You guys are my heros! After relentlessly calling D* over and over and getting nowhere, once I got a little educated and got that magic 8008249081 phone number, I got a good deal! However, the reason I am posting is because the orders are confusing and I can't make sense of it. Here is what the rep told me: I keep my HR10 and move it to another TV, I get a HR20 and a HR10 for free after a credit to my bill is applied + a 19.95 shipping/handling fee. I also get an H20 free with no additional handling fee with the same credit-to-my-account process.

So total cost was $19.95 for an HR20, H20, AT9, WB68 Multiswitch, and I keep my HR-10. I have been a customer for just under 2 years, and used my commitment expiration date as leverage for negotiation. I also mentioned Comcast's (gag) offerings. I had to give her a credit card to process the orders, and she said that the credits would show on my account after install.

Here is the confusion(the whole process was split into two orders):
Description Unit Price Quantity Price
Standard Professional Install $0.00 1 $0.00
Relocate Existing HDDVR IRD $0.00 1 $0.00
Swap Relocate DVR IRD $0.00 1 $0.00
Swap Replace HR20 IRD $0.00 1 $0.00
DIRECTV 5-LNB Multi-Satellite Dish $0.00 1 $0.00
Handling $19.95 1 $19.95
Subtotal: $118.95
Tax: $10.70
Total: $129.65

Description Unit Price Quantity Price
DIRECTV 5-LNB Multi-Satellite Dish $0.00 1 $0.00
Handling $19.95 1 $19.95
Standard Professional Install $0.00 1 $0.00
Swap Relocate DVR IRD $0.00 1 $0.00
DIRECTV HD DVR (Expanded HD Prog. Capable) $0.00 1 $0.00
Subtotal: $318.95
Tax: $28.70
Total: $347.65

From the looks of it, I am getting two HR20's free and no H20??? And were do these magical Totals come from, everything above it is zero except for handling?!

EDIT: Forgot to mention, I did have to renew my 2 year commitment, and these boxes are leased, not owned.

UPDATE: called and asked when my contract was up, and it's not until MARCH 2008!! Anyway, the cancellation was $225, so I told them I was thinking of going to cable (which isn't even an option for me...;)).

After some haggling, I got the HR20 for about $129 after credits. Not bad for a 2 year customer.

I dont have HD right now at all. D* is installing the HR20 and the new dish on Oct 7. I got 299.00 for the HR20 150.00 credit to my account and 10.00 a month off my bill for a year. Plus the HD pack free for 4 months and they even will bill the HR20 over three months for me on my account. Not the best deal but I am happy with it. Been with D* for about 2 1/2 years with just total choice 2 rcv and dvr service.

William, I had an amazingly similar thing occur with me, and I live in Palo Alto also! When I called back to finalize the order, the nice gal said the units were out of stock and couldn't place an order. Then I called again and the next rep said they wouldn't let me get a HR20 and keep my 10-250! So I still don't have a final order - will have to try calling retention yet again.

Installer (from Ironwood) showed up this morning as scheduled. He did a reasonably good job of installing and peaking the AT9 dish (he had clearly done AT9s before and knew what he was doing, and he had the requisite signal test instrument). He gave me the HR20 "in the box" so I could do my own install (which was my preference). And as everybody else has reported, they don't ask to take away your existing HR10-250 (as least, not if it is an owned, as opposed to leased, unit).

One thing to watch out for: If you need a new WB68 multiswitch, or any of that "up to 150 feet of inside wiring", be sure to mention it to DirecTV and see that they put it in the work order. "If it ain't in the work order, you don't get it."

FYI - My HR-250 is giving me problems so I decided to go ahead and get one of these. After some "dealing" with customer retention I got the following deal:

Pay $99.00 plus shipping.

To compensate I get a $20 credit per month for the next ten months and a one time credit of $50 so they gave me money to take it.

I should add I've been with them since the beginning and get the platinum package and Sunday ticket.

New to these forums and thanks for the CSR number. I already have the 5LNB dish installed 4 months ago because I did the move program. They did not move my antenna because they said you get locals in HD now. Obviosly they were wrong so they gave me credit for the antenna.

Anyhow I was able to keep my Hr10-250 and get the HR20-700 for free. They told me it would be 99 for the swap program but I told them that it was suppossed to be swapped for free. Sure enough that is what they gave me.

They came out today to install it so I will have to mess around with it after work. I also told 2 friends and they got the same deal as well with the new dish.

Had install scheduled today between 1 and 5. Mastec was the install company - they called around 2:15 and arrived about 2:30.
2 Installers, one handled the HR20's and the other handled the dish.
Installed the new dish, which I carried around back just to see how heavy it was -not too bad I guess, but def. beefier than the old 3 LNB.
Both installer were very cool and somewhat knowledgeable. Except they didn't even know the HR20's have the OTA tuner built in but not active yet.
To my surprise, they showed up with 2 HR20-700's! I didn't recall the Retention CSR saying anything about 2 new units, but I wasn't going to argue. :)
Both new boxes have updated software, and all local HD channels are nice and clear and signal seems good and strong...so we'll see how things go.
The one thing I already miss very much, is of course the dual live buffers!!! Man, that is such a nice feature, I really hope it is activated in the next software update. Speaking of software updates, the installers said they were told the next update would be in November??? But you know how that info gets thrown around. I did call Retention yesterday to make sure my order was correct, and asked why some people were getting these units for free or for $19.95. She then gave me Showtime and Starz free for 3 months.
Current equipment is: 1 HR10-250 and one Philips DSR6000.

New equipment and details:

2 (yep 2) HR20-700's
AT-9 Dish
Zenwell 6x9
charged $104.00 ($99.00 + tax / no shippng)
HD package free for 4 months
$10 credit for 12 months
Showtime and Starz free for 3 months

In all I'm happy with this deal - ecspecially since it included 2 new units.
Now, just waiting for OTA activation and dual live buffers.

good luck to everyone,
jb

I had already ordered my Hr20 in August and got $399 - $133. Yesterday, I got a mailer with the following deal;

Free DVR (HR20) or Hd Receiver + $5 off bill for 12 months. Called retentions and got my last order to $0 for the HR20 + $60 in credits. It doesn't say anything about free install or $19.95 for shipping. The CSR wasn't aware of the new promotion but didn't question it at all. So, I got free HR20, free install, no handling fee + $60 in credits. Nice deal. I've been with them for 8 years.

The other two deals are:

24 PPV movies free (2 per month for 12 months)
$10 off bill for 6 months

The 5 LNB AT-9 Dish has four outputs carrying the signals from all satellites (i.e. each output has all five satellites). You shouldn't have a problem connecting to two DVRs. Multiswitch would not be required unless you need to connect a second dish (like a World Direct International Dish) or need to connect more than four cables.

I called customer retention today to complain that the H20 I bought from ABCWarehouse in July was showing up as a leased item on my bill, and that I should also be paying $5.99 and not $7.99 a month for the protection plan. They explained that they would fix the $7.99 to the right cost, and that the $100 I paid for the H20 is the lease cost and that had I purchased it, the price would have been $299.

I coyly complained that had I know this I would have held off and just ordered a leased HR20 when it came out. She said "let me go check what I can do." I waited about 5 or 6 minutes. She came back and said they would take back my H20 and lease me an HR20 for $99 plus $19.95 shipping and tax. They would include in this installation of the new dish to replace my oval 3LNB, and any new switches I required. I would have to agree to the 2 year customer thing, but not a problem for me.

They were clear that HD-Locals were not in my area yet over the dish, and that when they were I would be notified, as well as given an offer to get an HR20 to replace my HR10-250 for free (but would be able to keep it as a working unit that wouldn't get the MPEG4 channels).

They were clear that OTA Locals would NOT work on the HR20 yet, but will via a software upgrade they'll do in Oct. or Nov.--they're not sure--but their engineers are working hard to make it happen and it should happen no later than Thanksgiving.

They also said that the OTA locals would come in, but wouldn't be in the guide. Is that true? Really, it's not a big deal for me since this is just my home office unit and the purpose of my getting the HR20 this early is to test it out.

I've been very curious to see this box, and so want to see how the closed captioning is, and how the recording functions and such work, since I'm so used to my Tivo. And since it's not replacing a current recorder, if it misses a show or fails to work, no big deal.

My install date is Oct. 9 and I'll keep y'all informed.

Well I finally had my installation yesterday. The tech's (two) showed up at around 10:30am. I made sure it was the AT-9 dish and the HR-20 and it was. I asked them about running the extra line into the bedroom to attach the R15 which was on the work order to be moved. They told me that it was not on the work order to run another cable and started quoting me the price if I wanted the additional line installed. I did not even wait 2 seconds and picked up the phone and called installation support. They told me that the work order said to relocate the existing DVR and that I should not be charged for it because running the second cable into the bedroom is necessary to relocate the existing DVR. I asked if they would speak to the tech and they did. When he hung up with installation support he said he would have to call his office. He spoke with his office and they still insisted that I need to be charged for the additional cable run and he gave me the phone. She told me that the work order only said re-locate existing equipment. I agreed and then told her, the existing equipment is a DVR it needs two lines, the work order stated relocate the DVR, so that should include the extra cable run. She asked to speak to the tech again, and that was the last thing that was said. They installed the addditional cable, still don't know if I am going to be charged for it or not, nothing more was said, and I didn't press the issue, because I know that if I do get charged DTV will take care of it.

Activation was another animal. At first I thought I made it through the process on one call. They activated the HD package, and the locals, and made me go channel by channel to test if they worked. Everything was fine, so end of call. I then was playing around and tried to record something and it said I did not have DVR service and to call DTV. I called back and they started going through the process of telling me what it costs and what charges will be on my account. I was very confused, I said I already have DVR service on the old receiver that was moved which was a DVR. She said, You do?. I was completely stumped. Apparently upon activating the new receiver they removed DVR service from my account. Go figure, you activate a DVR and they remove the service.

Anyway, now that it's all over and up and running, I guess I'll be seeing you all in the problem section of this forum, as I've notice a few so far.

I just got off the phone setting up my HR20 install.
My profile:
- Been with Directv since 1998.
- Currently have 3 DirecTivos (with lifetime dvr service)
- Have always had a simple Total Choice-like subscription - no NFL or other specials

I called last night and could only get $199 with 4 months free HD service ($10 credit per month)

On my 2nd call they offered additional $10 per month credit for 12 months - and I took it.

It's probably not the best deal but I didn't really feel like continually calling and calling. My install is scheduled for Oct. 12th. I would have liked it a little sooner but I can understand it with the supply problems they seem to be having.

So it IS possible for a non-big $$$ customer without an HR10 to get a 'deal', but I wouldn't expect the greatest deal in the world - just a satisfactory one (for me at least)

Why would you have a conflict? You can set up the remotes to have different signals, even operate both with one remote. If you RF, each RF code is different. Chances of same code are VERY slim.

Well, today I called and tried to get the second HR20(by swapping the H20) and wasn't able to do it, despite saying that I did receive the offer on Monday. The CSR said that she couldn't do it and the original person at D* must have been confused.

Has anyone been able to swap out a H20 and a HR10 for two HR20's without having to pay anything or just a nominal amount such as $50? Should I keep trying?

Here's my experience. I've had Directv since 2003. For the last month I have had the Premiere package with a $20 credit. I have normally kept Total Choice with one or two premiums, usually with some sort of programming credit. I am on credit card autopay.

While I have gotten a lot of programming credits, I have never gotten free equipment. After numerous tries earlier this year to get the HR10 when they were practically giving them away, I finally purchased my own HR10 in February and just got the standard $200 rebate.

I called about three times (always the retention number) to switch out my HR10 with the HR20, and the best I could get was $99 and four free months of HD, no handling (or handling included, I forget). I finally decided that was good enough and called back to take the deal. The retention CSR then told me it would be an additional $20 for handling, which pissed me off, but she wouldn't budge.

I hung up and called right back, and this guy told me that he couldn't place the order on his system and had to transfer me to installation services, and I should tell my story about the handling to them. After a long hold time I was connected, and they easily agreed to credit my bill the $20. It was so easy, just on a lark I told them that I knew a lot of people that had been actually been able to pay the $20, and get the $99 credited, instead of the other way around, which I was getting. I asked if she could check and see if my account qualified me for that deal. She looked at it for a moment and said she could do it, no problem. So they charged my credit card $127 with tax, and I'm getting a $99 credit and free HD package for four months (I was feeling lucky and went ahead and confirmed that the free HD would still apply).

That was Tuesday, they are coming out this afternoon.

So I guess the moral of the story is that installation services (whatever that is), can bargain as well. I couldn't be happier with the deal I got. I wouldn't underestimate the value of credit card autopay when they are evaluating your eligibility for these things. Other than that, I'm not sure why I would be such a valuable customer. I've never gotten near the end of my committment, I never had Season Ticket or order pay-per-views, and I only have two receivers on my account. My bill has always been under $100.

Hoping installation goes well and I love the HR20.

Called retention for the 2nd time today. Here's what I got...

HR20 $99 (I get to keep my HR10)
H20 $99
New dish $0
Install $0
$20 programming credit for 6 months

Tried to get 2nd HR20 but they are running out so it was noted when I call back in a month or two, I get a 2nd HR20 free of charge. Very good deal as far as I'm concerned...

I called to ask about local HD channels. The CSR set me up with the following:

New Dish - $0
HR20 - $0
WB68 multi-switch - $0
Install - $0

Everything was install yesterday and works great. I even got to keep my existing HR10-250.

Many, many thanks. Just got off the phone after calling the number above.

Free HR20
Free dish swap
Free install
No handling.
$5 off for one year, (then DVR for $4.99).
Free HD programming for 4 months.
2 year commitment.

Hope this is real and they don't go back on it. The order says DIRECTV HD Rec. (Expanded HD Prog. Capable). Itrust this is the HR20? Do they currently ship any other HD DVR?

Tried the retention number first and could not get better then $100 of $299, HD free for 4 months and HBO for $2 for 6 months.

Many thanks guys for your advise.

Just to clarify, you did not receive the mailer mentioned above? I haven't received one but I would like to give this a shot.

Hmm. Things worked out well for me. Almost perfect, in fact.

I had my system installed yesterday and things were just slightly different than what I originally thought. While I did get to keep the HR10, it appears that the HR20 is leased and NOT owned. The cool thing is that instead of one system I received TWO HR20s at zero dollars total. I was as shocked as anyone when two arrived, but since I have 3 HDTVs and previously only the one HR10 I gladly took both. Now I have to decide where to put what and what to drop.

On Monday, I ordered the HR20 to replace my dead HR10 for $50. At the time, I was also offered an HR20 to replace my H20. I, mistakenly, didn't take them up on the offer. Yesterday, when I tried to get that part done, the CSR said it couldn't be done. I figured I might try again today. However, I looked at my account online at noon time, and it showed a cost of $334.

So, called about 90 mins ago. The CSR said that I couldn't have gotten the original deal. FRUSTRATION!! After being transferred a number of times, put on hold, cut off, etc. I finally was connected to an "account supervisor" whoever or whatever that means, and he corrected it. (I hope). But could only upgrade the
H20 to an HR20 for a discounted price of $199. I declined that and will wait until I get thru this installation on October 10 and see about after that.

This is getting annoying. I thought I had a good deal (99$ to get HR20, keep HR10, get $100 in programming credits), but the CSRs couldn't place the order for some reason. In the past week or two, I've talked to two CSRs who won't give me the HR20 for less than $299 if I want to keep my HR10. How do you all manage to keep your HR10 when yo do this? I tell them I want to keep my HR10, and replace my other Hughes HD receiver with the HR20, and they say that would cost $299.

I just got off the phone with Customer Retention - I got a free HR20-700, free 5-LNB dish, free install, no fees. I'm happy. Install is set for Saturday 10/7.

FWIW, I've been a D* sub since mid-1997, have had NFL ST every year, and have five receivers on the account. Don't know if that made any difference at all.

I am working on a deal currently. I have been a DirecTv customer for 4 years. We have 3 receivers (Samsung I think). I am pretty much a novice at this so bare with me. I emailed DirecTv asking about dvr and what our options might be. Someone from retention called and I spoke with her for awhile asking questions, etc. She offered DVR service for $5.99 2yr contract (but we would need to purchase the dvrs), $10 discount/yr, Showtime 6 months and Starz 3 months. I am thinking we can do better - based on all the threads. We really would like the HD-DVR for one tv and a regular dvr for another tv. Any advice on how to get the best deal? Wouldn't mind free anything else... They have called twice since then and left messages.

Review the posting here. You should get two HR20s - even if you don't plan to add HD to the other system - at least you will be ready for it. Remember you can not get HD locals unless you have MPEG4 receivers.

So just to clarify - you mean get 2 HR20-700s (the HD-DVRs) and can you clarify about the MPEG4 receivers? I know nothing about them.

- Also, the HR20-700s are currently listed at $299 each. What do you think DirecTv will do for me concerning those?

I called DirecTV a cocuple weeks ago, they told me $200 off and $10 / month credit for 12 months. Well, I called about an unreleated issue yesterday 6am and I mentioned it, they told me they could do $199 on the HR20 through a Friends & Family Promo and apply a $200 credit. Plus I would get $10 off for 12 months plus $10 off HBO for 6 months. So I eneded up getting paid $180 for my HR20 with very little effort. Perhaps calling in early in the morning helped? But the rep said the major reason he could give it to me is because I'm a good customer and I pay my bill on time. I really don't know if it's true or not though.

Called back, and got a much more helpful CSR. She was able to get it to me for $99, plus $19.95 shipping, but gave me $10 off for 6 months on the HD package, plus Showtime credited for 6 months. I'm very satisfied with this deal, since I was able to get a similar deal on the HR10 less than 1 year ago.

I would call back and confirm the D* HD Rec. (Expanded HD Prog. Capable) means the HR20 DVR. I had the exact same phrasing on an order I placed and luckily I was suspicious enough to call back and confirm prior to the install. Well, surprise, surprise it was NOT the HR20 DVR that was scheduled for installation but the H20. I was able to cancel the first install and get the second install scheduled with the right equipment. I copied my HR20 install info. so you can see what it looks like. 'DIRECTV HD DVR (Expanded HD Prog. Capable)' Good luck!

My order did not mention the multi-switch, but the installer knew about it and installed it. Everyone who is using more than four outputs from the AT9 will need the new switch as the old one will not pass the Ka frequencies.

(honest question - I would totally call back if I thought they would give me more credits on my bill but I'm not even sure what I would say to them.)

I called this morning to get the HR20 upgrade from the HR10. First they offered my $99 fee. When I asked about any programming credits they gave me a $10 credit for 3 months off of HBO. So a net of $70 cost to me.

I had to call back about an hour later to ask a question about the install time and in the meantime I had read this thread and figured, why not? I asked about these $19.95 shipping fee only deals and what I do have to do to get that and she said, "no problem". I'll credit you for the whole $99! So I'm still getting the $30 HBO credit and a new unit (and get to keep the HR10- which is leased! I'll move that over to a TV that has an H20 and sell the extra H20).

Honestly, I don't know how they stay in business with such deals. I have 3 receivers, TOTAL Choice, HBO, HD package but no NFL ST. Been with them since '99.

Hello all, I'm new to the forum. I also on the tivocommunity forum. My deal was the following;

2 weeks ago called into tech support about local channel problems. They tech support person talked to be about getting the HR20, best price 99 dollars. that's for new 5 lmb, installation, hr20, relocating my hr10. They also gave me 6 months of free HD package. Scheduled the install for yesterday. about 10 min before the scheduled time got a call from the installed and low and behold they were out of stock. I called retention and told them i was not happy. they ended up giving me a 200 credit + 10 off per month for 12 months, and rescheduled my install for 10/13. I checked my order and now it looks like i might be getting 2 hr20's. 1 was the 99 one i paid for and another with a 0 dollar cost.

Anyone have any idea what kind of a deal I could get as a brand new customer? I just got my R15 and D11 installed last weekend and I'm already fed up with the R15. If I can't get a good deal on the HR20 which actually works then I'm going to switch to Dish and get a 625 or maybe a 622.

I got my HR10 the end of January. At the time, I said I knew the new one was being released in Fall and did not want to pay again. They agreed to a free upgrade and it's recorded in the notes. I paid $250 and got a lot of programming credits, HD Package, Showtime & HBO so it was an okay deal.

In July the HR10 stopped responding to the remote and called CR and made them replace it with a new one and shipped the scratched refurb they had sent back. When I called CR they said I only qualify for one free unit every 6 months. That time frame works out to the middle of Winter and probably snow on the roof. They said too bad. My only other option is to pay $99. So much for their agreeing to free!

I have been a customer for 5 years and even did the mover connection when I could have opted for them or Dish. It ticks me off that they are not honoring the free HR20 as that was the stipulation when I paid for the HR10. I have called several times and according to them, there is no Free button as an option on their screen. They also no longer bill accounts as apparently people scammed them on the units. I replied that since being with them for 5 years I was obviously not in that category. I found that comment insulting since they sent me two refubs by mistake instead of one and I returned both and given the fact that I am a long time subscriber.

For the first time I am thinking of getting E* and feel pretty confident that they can file their commitment right along side my "free" upgrade. The thing that is holding me back is the PITA it would be to switch.

I had a little bit of a hassle, but here's what I got.

Called retention, told them I was previously told I'd get a free upgrade to the new HD DVR once HD locals were out. Rep said the deal I was eligible for was $99 for the new receiver (plus tax and shipping). I repeated that I was told about the free upgrade. We went back and forth a bit, eventually she said since I was a valued customer (blah blah) she could credit back the $99, I'd have to pay the full amount now ($99 plus $19-something shipping plus tax) and I'd get a $99 credit applied on my bill (which I just verified I got). Installation is set for October 12. The new HD DVR is going to be on a lease (booh!) but I don't have to trade in my existing HD TiVo (yay!). I did ask in passing if there were any other promos, such as the $20/mo Total Choice Premier credit for 6 months I got previously. No go, all they had was free HD for four months (you must keep the HD package for 12 months total, no biggie).

I possibly could have done better, but didn't do too bad either. Especially considering I get to keep my HD TiVo.
