It seems that it would make sense to rollout to the cities that already receive HD LIL since the OTA tuner is not enabled yet. I haven't seen Earl say anything about it, so I assume no one really knows at this point?

I haven't seen anything on it yet... but from discussions, it looks like:
LA->Everyone Else
But until I hear more, or get something to post...

According to LockMD via a CSR, 40 other markets after LA, then the rest in the winter. According to the most recently updated list, there are 36 active markets with MPEG4 locals. My best guess would be those after LA, then they will open it to everyone in the winter once the initial rush has died down.

This year Fall starts Sept. 23, 12:03 A.M. EDT and winter starts Dec. 21, 7:22 P.M. EST so I guess that is their window if you want to get technical.

man, switching after the fall season begins may be rough if I have to give back the HR10 right away. From a losing what I have recorded perspective I mean.

Get a DVD Recorder and dump your recordings there. That might be your 2nd most important investment next to a DVR. I know I have one already (DVD Recorder) which I used with my HD Tivo I had.

Or you could just hack the HR10 and extract the programs to your PC....<not that I've ever done that> :D :D :D

I remember the article on IGN.com when this was announced, so this may give an idea....but the Q2 2006 we swear comment is funny.
"That's all good and fine, but when does the HR20 finally come out and how much is it going to cost? DirecTV would not give us a firm date, but it did state that the unit will definitely be available in Q2 2006. "Really Q2, we swear," a spokesperson told us. Meanwhile, we're able to report some fantastic news for early adopters who picked up a DirecTV TiVo HD DVR. DirecTV reps confirmed to us today that the HR20 will be made available "completely free of charge" to select HD TiVo owners as soon as the former becomes available. By select, the company means owners who live in the PST or MT areas of the United States, as these regions will be the first to make the switch to MPEG-4 broadcasts. HD TiVo owners who live in other parts of the US can either wait a little longer for the same deal or purchase the HR20 for only $99 smackers. Brand new customers will pay approximately $200 for the device and will get a significant mail-in rebate, according to DirecTV."

Earl, do you know when the new birds are going to launch? Looks like this is just in time for that.

First one is for April 07, and the second one is on for late summer.
First one is for April 07, and the second one is on for late summer.I've seen two sites that show April 2007 for DirecTV 10, but I can find no schedule for DirecTV 11. Perhaps the schedule will be based on the relative success of the DirecTV 10 deployment.
Another interesting tidbit is that DirecTV 10 will go up on a Proton rocket and DirecTV 11 is set for Sea Launch.
