And you're sure you are getting the HR20? I thought the first month or so was only LA?
Also, what are you going to end up paying for it?
my father ordered it last week
but when the installer came by last monday they didnt have it because its not available yet.

I was trying to see if ShoNuff who live in Fremont really was getting the HR20. I guess I'll have to wait until next week to see if he gets one installed or not. That is if he responds to this forum...:)

I am also interested if anyone in the bay area has heard anything regarding the release timeframe of the HR20. When I talked with Ironwood last week, they said they didn't have any HR20s in stock yet.

So ShoNuff.... Did you get your HR20 installed yesterday? If so, who did you talk to to get it? Let us know!:)
When I sign onto D*'s website on my account it shows the HR20 and has it as a 99 dollar upgrade option (I did not order yet) but called CSR and could not even order via them yet
She says there is no swap offer and what they are doing for LA is 399.
Just another game of roulette.

Just called customer service and ordered the HR20 for $21.60 $19.95 plus tax, install scheduled for August 28th
The rep first told me my cost would be $399.00. I explained to her that I paid 1,000 for my HR10 and was told that I would receive the HR20 for just shipping and handling. She put me on hold, and came back with 299.00 telling me I was receiving a "special rebate". I mentioned again that I paid 1,000 for the HR10 and was told since D* changed their format to MPG4 that I would receive the “replacement” DVR for Shipping and Handling only. I was once again placed on hold and she came back with the HR20 for $19.95, including a new dish and installation.

Richard A - The CSR I talked to checked my zip and said that its "very close" to being available outside the LA, but is still not available.
She wanted to talk prices, etc. - which I cut her off b/c I didn't want to start negotiating about the lease upgrade if she wasn't able to place an order.
Did you talk to a specific dept? Retention?

No, I just called 800-494-4388.
Called Ironwood Communications yesterday to see if they had or knew when they would have the HR20's. I was told they currently have NO HD boxes they have no date when the HR20 will arrive but their next shipment is due on the 31st they 'hope' the HR20 is on that shipment but couldnt give any details.

I called last week to have AT9 dish and HR20 installed for Aug. 27 in San Bruno, CA. First rep told me the HR20 would be available then. After reading this forum I checked back later last week and second rep said to check in again this week to make sure it was available. I just called and was transferred to installation dept. They said they still show the HR20 as only available in LA and suggested that I push back the installation for two weeks so I did. Dissapointed but want to get it done right.
I called DTV last night about the HR20.. said it is unavailable and should be mid-fall before it's available to me....
I am looking forward to getting the HD with the DVR... hopefully before the hockey season starts....

It will be nice to get the HR20 but they still are not broadcasting FSN BA in HD to Sacramento.

I second the hockey. Can't wait for this box to hit the Bay. I wonder if that 8/22 install noted above went through. Maybe they brought a H20 box instead by accident.

Hi LockMD, Which Ironwood office did you call that gave the 31 Aug date? I talked to the main office at 800-805-8570 today and the Sacramento area office earlier at 916-643-8889; they both quoted an availabitity date of Sep 12. Have you tried scheduling an HR20 install thru DirecTV for a date earlier than the 12th? If so, what kind of deal for upgrade/swap could you get?

Yes, I've tried but no results. I may call again this weekend, not sure yet.
I called the Hayward office, they are the ones that service Concord, CA.
Remember she said thier next truck is coming on the 31st she didnt know what was going to be on it. She stated they have no HD boxes at the moment include the TiVo (HR10-250).
Just got off the phone with Customer Retention, she said it came out in LA today (hasn't it been like two weeks?). She said Bay Area is late August - early September. I asked what my cost would be, as I currently have the HR10-250. She said cost is $399 for LA, but was clueless to what Bay Area would be, she seemed to think it would be different. She said just the receiver alone was $700 and that it was an "awesome" deal for me at $399. I mentioned I was 5 hearts, blah blah, and she seemed to think for $399 they were losing money. Oh well, I figure I will call back and get another rep when it actually comes out. It seems like they are sticking to their $399, especially because they have no box to sell me.
 If they stick to their guns and charge 399 for the installation, I'm calling Comcast before I get off the phone w/ D*. No way in hell I'm paying 399 for something I don't own.
Just tried to get the new HR20. Told sometime in September for SF area. No one is selling on eBay yet.

According to DirecTv themselves (as of 1 hour ago), "The HR20 is not supposed to be available in the SanFran Bay Area for another 3-6 weeks, and that any boxes installed in the area were mistakes."
lol lyk i didn't already know that last part
Edit: I was also told I may be able to recieve a free one for a valued customer? Lets just hope its not one of their leases....

even if the hr20 is not available in your area it is nice to call customer retention as many times as you have to until you get someone that will give u the upgrade for free.....then they can at least make a note on your account so that when the hr20 is available to you ..and when you call in it wont have to be a hassle. i think it took me 5 calls to customer retention before i got a csr that offered me all new equipment, including the hr20, for free and he said i didnt have to give them my hr10 either since i owned it and paid 1000 bucks for it. i just wanted to get the "negotiating" out of the way so i wouldnt have to do it later......however i will wait a while even after the hr20 is avail in my area for them to work the bugs out. no need to upgrade yet since my hr10 works just fine and i get all my ota's just fine. besides from what i am reading so far it seems the hr10 is a superior product.

I called two months ago (long before the LA pilot) and make a huge stink and got them to agree to the free upgrade.
I called two weeks ago (day after the first unit hit LA) and got an install date of last week. I called 4 times in the days leading up to the install and confirmed that the installer would have the HR20, all said "yes". Sure enough......he shows up with the HR15. I called back, and get the answer "they are only availble in LA. I see we told you they were available. Sorry about that."
I have called since then to confirm again that my records are very clear stating that the upgrade is free. So far every CSR has found that quickly on my record so when the unit starts to hit NorCal, I should be good. But I can't count how many times D* has screwed me, so I don't assume anything anymore. I would have switched to Comcast, but I hate their DVR.

I finally after two weeks talking to so many people talked to a lady today at D-tv that knew what was going on.
What I learned:
1. The phone calls and mailings to upgrade to the HR20 w/AT9 dish are early.
2. LA is in fact a roll-out test area.
3. People on the dbstalk VIP signup list will be contacted around Sept. 13th.
4. HR20s will start shipping outside of LA the last week of September.
5. If you set a install date before the 13th of Sept you will get a H10.
6. Put your name on the VIP list and wait till next month.

mfb - Please report back after your install is done and let us know if you indeed did get an HR20. So far no one has reported that they got a HR20 when the installer has shown up. The installers have only been coming with the HR10 even though people have been calling D* to confirm that they will be bringing an HR20.
I hope that you get the HR20! Keep us posted. Thanks

So free HR20 for you too, huh? What is your story (purchased HR10, high monthly payment, etc)...
Posters have reported scheduling HR20 installs for early Sep from Fla,Tex, Colo, and Bay area and some have confirmed with D* that the model will be HR20. Ironwood installers that service Concord say they are getting a shipment on Aug 31 and Sacto area Ironwood installers told me Tuesday they would have them by Sep 12 and to go ahead and set up an appointment thru D*. I tried with two different retention CSRs for appt for Sep 14. Both said no and not avail in Sacto area till after Sep 20 or later. I talked date for free upgrade and they talked undetermined availability and purchase price. Said couldn't annotate my account; would send an email. D* CSRs don't seem to have info on what stock/shipents installers have. Where is the distribution point that ships to installers? Anyone have info on Sacto area HR20 availability date??

I'm a little surprised that I got the 9/1 date.
I negotiated the following for my brother-in-law:
I went thru two reps (via retention) to get the following:
$420 charge - $399 + $20 S/H
$250 credit
Free HD package for 12 months
Free SHO for six months.
I was on the phone with D on Monday (helping with initiating an H20 for their back room). I asked the guy about the HR20 for me and he told me it was available. Told me $399. I figured I would have to go thru another long negotiating ordeal. I mentioned that I was waiting for the HR20 and told by previous reps that the upgrade would be free. He came back with "ok, we'll just charge you S/H".
We both had the HD Tivo and long standing customers. We both have the basic packages (<$60/mo)
I'll post on Friday if it becomes reality.

Par for the course I guess. Does anyone know if the NFL Sunday Ticket HD games will be MPEG-2 or MPEG-4 this year? If it is MPEG-2, I'm good for a while and can wait. If it's MPEG-4, the sooner I get the HR20, the better.

From DirecTV El Segundo office.
After much deliberation it has been decided that the bay area will Not receive the HR20, furthermore all customers in this area will be exclude from all future hardware and software upgrades.
Just Kidding, I hope you all get it soon.
When the installer comes out, make sure he aligns the dish to 99 and 103, my first installer did not. Also be sure he forces a download at the first welcome screen, you will have far fewer problems. If you connect only with a HDMI cable during the download you will not see the download in progress, it could make things more confusing and complicated. Use some other method for the video connection temporarily.

GREAT GOING GRACE - What company is scheduled to do your installation? I am in Roseville and D* always sends Ironwood (local: 916-643-8889) (main office:1-800-805-8570) and they keep telling me HR20s won't be received till Sep 12 and D* Retention keeps telling me that they haven't been told when they can schedule installs for the Sacto area.
Do you mind answering if you have the NFL Sunday Ticket? Did you already have an HD Receiver
andbye: I haven't gotten the name of the installer yet. I plan on giving D* till tomorrow afternoon to pass the word down. Then I will call to double check the order. But it does show up on my D* account. However, I made a mistake on the install date. It is actually 9/12. Should have looked at the calendar to check what day Tuesday was. But really doesn't matter as they did offer 9/9 originally.
I do not have NFL Sunday Ticket or any other special program packages - just the basic Total Choice. And I do not have nor have I ever had a HD receiver or a DVR before.
is 5 LNB dish compatible with MPEG-2 receivers? In other words can I use my current Tivo 10-250 DVR and HR20 both at same time?

I'd be very curious to see how well the local HD channels look and perform for you on this box. I understand the feed from the local affiliates to DirecTV is over an antenna vs. fiber optic like Comcast.
When I lived in MV, I could get local OTA, but I imagine in Petaluma, no such luck for comparison?

I just got off the phone with D* Retention Rep. and got the HR20 for $19.95 and an install on 9/9.:hurah: I called Ironwood in Santa Rosa and made sure they indeed have the HR20 in stock and were installing them before I made the appointment. I then called D* back and talk to another rep to schedule my appointment. She did everything that the first Rep said and only charge the $19.95 handling fee.
I only had to make one call :hurah: to get the HR20 for just the $19.95 handling charge and no return of my H20 or HR10-250. She said the installer could run the one extra cable from the 5LBN dish they installed when they put in the H20 to have both the HR20 and HR10 running.
I could not believe it was that easy. The reps I talked to were extremely nice and knowledgeable one even said they didn't know what area had the HR20s ready to install. That's when I doubled check with Ironwood to find out if that was the box they were installing. :hurah:
I can't wait to record all the new season HD shows. ;)

I have the same problem in Lucas Valley. No OTA, so I got the H20 HD receiver from D* when it came out. All but FOX KTVU channel 2 look great. Fox has always had digital blocking and noise. Maybe the HR20 will be better. I will post once it is installed.

I had OTA channels via a Channel Master 4248 and Winegard pre-amp. Got all of the channels from Sutro. This was prior to the DNS and now locals via MPEG4.
On my setup, Pio 1120 plasma, I could't tell a performance difference across all three options. I also had an H20 w/ the MPEG4 capability.
I have removed the OTA antenna and will use the HR20 for both MPEG2 and MPEG4 HD. I'm assuming the DNS channels will go away sooner than later.
Hope this helps.

I called yesterday and got an installation scheduled for Sept. 7th. That supposedly is the first one available. (How are people getting next day appointments?)
Even with that date, the Retention CSR said that their system still doesn't show the HR20 as available. I said to go ahead and make the appt. and hopefully, I can talk to them and confirm availability before they show up.
I did get an email yesterday from D* - stating that the HR20 is available.

Tech just left about 1 hour ago. Still fine tuning the box, but it sure is nice to have HD locals.
We did have some problems with activation, but once we got it working it looks great.
So far the only problem I have noticed is the Caller ID bug but I have not played around much with the DVR features yet.

I'd be interested to see if we can keep HD-DNS on the HR10 and local HD on the HR20.
My third attempt was today to get it for free. CSR was pretty tough and seemed to know his stuff. He said it is only available in LA area, he said anything on the web saying installations are outside the LA area are false. He said when those people get an install it will be H20. He offered me a $250 credit to when it comes out in my area. He said I should receive a postcard in the mail saying its available, and that the email only means you can get it at Best Buy for $399.
I wasn't sure to take the credit or not, because I don't really want to pay $150 when I paid a ton for the H10-250. I took it and figured it's better than nothing, and that I can argue later on if need be.

Got my HR20 and 5 LNB dish installed yesterday and it was the first one that the installer had seen. No problems during setup and the tech did a force download (hit 2 4 6 8 on the remote during the first screen after powering on).
I've been a Direct Tivo guy for years and the HR20 is going to take some getting used to although the caller ID on screen is pretty cool im not a big fan of the guide or procedure for scheduling season passes (series links).
The installer said that Ironwood in Morgan Hill had a bunch of the HR20's and I talked to best buy in Gilroy and they have it listed as in route.

Yes, I get ABC and CBS. I have been recording all the shows last season on those two channels. For some reason D* had my local NBC affiliate in Sacramento instead of San Jose so Sacramento station wouldn't sign the waivers. Same with Fox, no waivers. I got a letter the other day that said my DNS LA stations would not be shut off for now. Don't now how long that will last but with the HR20 I won't need them. Although I will miss Dallas Raines Weather forecasts for LA:grin:

I haven't gotten the HR20 yet. Install is for 9/9. I have the HR10-250 and the H20 HD receiver. The H20 gets both the LA feeds (Mpeg 2) as well as HD locals (Mpeg 4).
It seems a lot of people who got in are East Bay and really South (morgan hill). Anyone from San Jose or that area get an install date? I am wondering if my area doesn't have shipments yet. 2 retention operators couldn't even process it for me they said.
I am between Oakland and Sacramento and although I have not made an install appointment as yet (still negotiating price) I was told two days ago that the local installer here (waited on hold while she said she called them) does have them available and I could set up an install date if I wanted the offer she was making. 150 dollars off the 399 price plus 10 dollars a month for a year programming credit and 10 dollars a month for 6 months for HBO credit.
Not quite enough yet;)
It seems a lot of people who got in are East Bay and really South (morgan hill). Anyone from San Jose or that area get an install date? I am wondering if my area doesn't have shipments yet. 2 retention operators couldn't even process it for me they said.
I did took eight calls and about a half hour last night to get the right csr for an install date on thurs 9/7. we'll see what ironwood brings but the order reciept says D* HD DVR (Expanded HD Prog. Capable) so im hopeful. only 19.99 ship 1.65 tax. So keep trying dont give up and youll get one
I spoke to 6 different CSR/retention agents for 40 minutes (same call).
All except the last two CSRs said the HR20 was only available through D* in the LA market and available outside the LA mkt exclusively through BB until mid September.
First offer from D* $399
Second offer from D* $199
Final offer from D* $19.95 ( inc. install - new dish etc, relocate old hd tivo, and 4 months free Showtime)
Install is scheduled for next Monday.
I do believe that the first 4 or so CSRs only knew what their computer screens told them ( i.e. - only available in the LA mkt)
Don't take 'no' from someone who isn't authorized to say 'yes'

I never had a HR10 and was able to get the CSR to bring the price down to $299 on the first try. Also the very first CSR I talked to had me setup within 10 minutes and I had an appointment for install the next day!

What was your strategy for getting it down even further? Did you threaten to cancel? Right now I am at $150 off but non availability for my area.

You have a phone number for Ironwood? I couldn't google one locally. I figure if I call D* and tell them the installer just told me they have them it might help in getting one installed.

Well, just called the 800 number and she put me on hold while she called the local company. Was told they wouldn't have them until the 14th or 15th. I would think if Morgan Hill has them, then San Jose does too.

You would think so, but it seems whenever I call retention, they say that what I am seeing online is false, and that those people in other parts of the Bay Area are going to get H20s installed. I seriously doubt that, I just think retention hasn't been propertly briefed on the HR20 availability.
Maybe I will give another call back tonight and see what happens.

When each CSR told me that it was the best price they could offer I asked to speak to a supervisor. The price got better as I moved up the food chain. I never threaten to cancel. I've been a long time D* customer with ST and reminded them of that several times. I was always very polite as were they.

Hi Guys,
I live in San Jose and called rentention on Saturday. I currently have 2 HD TiVos and was told that since I am one of their better customers (8 years, Sunday Ticket w/ SuperFan, $100+ monthly bill) that they could "lease" me the HR20 for $19.95 and I can keep my existing DVRs.
The retention rep did say that he was unable to confirm if Ironwood? had any stock of HR20s. I was told that the installer would call me at some point to confirm my 9/9 install date and that at that time I should ask about their stock of HR20s.
If anyone has the number to Ironwood, I would appreciate it.
Thanks,
-Matt

Im at work now but the installer gave me the ironwood number and I'll post it when I get home tonight. He told me where the office was in Morgan Hill on Sutter RD behind the Target.
I just got installation date on 9/6 morning for a new dish and HR20. I do not have HD yet because I cannot get them locals OTA from Santa Rosa...
We shall see tomorow..
Seems like you can now order the HR20 unit on the DTV website.

The installer told me that he does installs all the way up to Mountain View and has to come to Morgan Hill everyday to pickup the equipment for his installs. He was actually mad that he has to drive so far south to pickup equipment for installs farther nort.

I got off of the phone with retention and "Olga" said that in my area it is available, but only for install only. Not a swap.
I have a leased HR10 and need an HR20. She said that the swap information wasn't confirmed yet.
Did anyone get their leased boxes swapped? Does anyone have more info on the swap?

Being unsatisfied with my previous answers, I called retention again. This time, I was told that Best Buy has the exclusive rights to sell them until 9/11.
She told me that I should call back on the 11th and that they will then be able to select the HR20 within the system.
That makes a lot more sense, but is still lame. She wouldn't even let me set up an install after the 11th.
Weak.

So tell us how you got D* to get you one and install it! I have called D* multiple times and they won't budge one bit. They keep saying that it's not available in the SF Bay Area yet via D*, but I could order one from Best Buy. They won't even tell me when they will be able to allow me to order it from them, only that it will be soon.
After I tell them that I have seen people on this list getting them and having them installed outside of the LA area, they tell me that they no nothing about that. So tell us how you were able to get it done. Can we use your name and location to refer to when they say it's not available right now?:)
I am hoping this all gets cleared up next week and we can order from D* without all of these problems.:D

I'm in Sacramento (I know, not quite bay area, but close) and I have an install scheduled on the 12th. Did you call retention?? That seems to be the best way. The number is 800=824-9081. They were even able to set me up to get it installed for free, I don't even have to pay S&H, even though I don't currently have an HD DVR.

I called a few days ago and got the same response as you did.. Then I saw the local posts having installs close..
I went to the DTV website and the HR20 was listed and available.. so I called DTV and the CSR said that she wasn't exactly sure about where the box was available as she had heard about installs outside of LA. She ordered the box, (specifically HR20) and to my surprise the earliest install was the next day..
I would call a few times until you get someone who can help you.. This was the first one that the installer had installed.

I believe that the D* retention CSRs don't always know if the installers have the HR20 in stock yet, so it may help to tell the CSR that your local installer has stock or is getting a shipment. The Ironwood installer for the Sacramento area (916-643-8889) is supppsed to get a shipment on Sep 12. I told this to the CSR and got an appointment of Sep 13. I think the Hayward area Ironwood installer (866-264-6003) may have an earlier shipment. The main Ironwood office (1-800-805-8570) should be able to tell you the number of your local installer so you can check with them about stock/shipment and use that info with the CSR. Make sure it is the HR20-700 and not the HR10-250. or just a plain H20. If you have had a recent upgrade of some kind or have subscribed to the NFL Sunday ticket you should tell them that at that time you were promised a free upgrade when the HR20 became available in your area .
I have a bit more information on Bay Area HR-20 installations.
It turns out Ironwood has several depots in the Bay Area - Morgan Hill, Hayward, Santa Rosa, and others. The depot for my address (Oakland) is Hayward. After speaking with the GM at Hayward, he told me that the HR20 shipments have not been uniform, and that Morgan Hill and Santa Rosa have stock of HR20's and are doing installs, while he is frustrated because they (Hayward) has received ZERO units.
This appears to not be in Directv's radar, because after I spoke with retention, they agreed to the $20 leased HR20, but when it showed up it was HR10. I refused it (had them install the new dish though) and he is now trying to get a HR-20 from one of the other Ironwood hubs to fill my order.
I had also ordered one from BB. It originally showed shipping on 9/12, now backordered.

Got the same story today from Ironwood-Hayward. They were scheduled to do the upgrade today but the tech didn't have the unit. My new scheduled date is 9/20; when they show that they will have the unit available. Needless to say, it was disappointing in that I called on Tuesday to confirm availability (not the Hayward specific number though) and they said it "should be available as my order stated the expanded HD capable unit".
Major disappointment watching the NFL kickoff game in SD.

So I call the 800 number that has been posted. It's national as well. But I state my case very clearly. I know there is someone in Morgan Hill that had the HR20 installed and I just want to be able to verify that the MORGAN HILL office has those in stock so I can tell D* and they can schedule an install. She puts me on hold, comes back and says the Morgan Hill office told her that they haven't had any of those in stock and don't and there aren't any places in California other than LA that have had them.
This game playing is making me think about switching to E*. Customers shouldn't have to jump through hoops to get the same things as each other.

Just got off the phone with Customer Retention (Mary Beth) and got the $19.95 deal. Install date is 9/10. Had to call twice before to get the right answer. Required a two year service committment and get to keep the HR10-250.
It's clear that some of the reps are playing hardball and only offering the BestBuy.com route. Mary Beth, however was very understanding as I explained my frustration with the situation and inconsistent messages from D*.
I am rather pessamistic in getting such a quick install date so I'll let you know what happens. Good luck.

Hi gnowel,
My install is scheduled for tomorrow. I tried calling Ironwood today to see if they could confirm that the installer would be bringing an HR20 (vs HR10), but the Ironwood CSR was clueless. She refused to give me the local branch number to Ironwood.
Can you tell me if the DirecTV retention rep was able to confirm that the installer had HR20s in stock for your install on Sunday?
Thanks,
-Matt
She just said that the HR20 and 5 LNB dish will be installed on Sunday. No confirmation with the installer was done. That's why I'm a little skeptical - seems to good to be true. I suspect I'll get a call from the installer saying the receivers are on backorder or something...

Well if ethier of you guys getting an install tomorrow actually get it to happen, it would be great if you could ask the installer what a person can do when they are being told they don't have any of the HR20s yet.
Least I'll do is call retention and ask why no everyone is treated the same way. I should have a note on my account to get it for free because at the time I was choosing between E* and D*. Hopefully a little comment about waiting for D* and then getting screwed will help things along.

I had my HR20 and 5 LNB installed today! The installer (who came from Morgan Hill) said a "big" shipment of HR20s came in last night. My install was his first; everything went smoothly.
I learned that the Ironwood office in Morgan Hill does all the installs for Bay Area cities south of Palo Alto.
Hope this helps.

I was buying a HD TV at the Union City, Best Buy. Surprisingly, they had ordered and received a shipment of HR20s. The box showed they came from El Segundo which is SoCal. I have mine in hand with an install date of 9/15.
I had originally talked to DTV retention. They told me to wait until 9/11 or order thru BB; they gave me the following deal no matter where I bought. They gave me $150 credit, $10/off programming for 1 year and 6 months of HBO free. Basically a new customer deal even though I have been a customer for ages.
I forgot to mention. At Best Buy, they give you $400 for signing up for HD service with a provider when buying a HDTV. You need to pay for an install of TV from Magnolia, $150. Still not bad.
Long email, but they are there; you might have to ask go to the Magnolia TV area.

Ironwood has done a few average installations for me. Their local number is 916-643-8889. My install is also sked for Wed, Sep 13. They told me last week that they had a shipment of HR20-700s coming in on Sep 12 and that they will have the AT9 Mpeg4 dish, the Zinwell 6x8 switch and also an under-eave mounting bracket for the dish. The bracket is a $55 item (I have stucco siding and tile roof) that you might have trouble getting D* to pay for even if it is on your order. They might compensate you for it with credits. I intend to check with Ironwood on Tues to assure they got the HR20s. You should be able to check with them using your name or the order number shown on your internet account display Some of the old paperwork from Ironwood had the "Mountain" name on it somewhere.

Call retention again. They said that the HR20 is only available in the LA area. When I explained the local office is telling people they have them I got the same ole run around. "We are only being told they are available in the LA area." "We can't schedule an install for that because we don't know what you'll get"
Called Ironwood national and got her to call the local office and they actually said they have them in stock! ha HA! Getting somewhere now.
Call retention back to schedule, got the same song and dance about not knowing what I'll get because they are supposed to install the older one first if they have any. But got install scheduled for tomorrow morning. Have to skip an operations meeting, but hey, it's high def.
Since, BB has them in stock close to my house and so does Ironwood. I called D* to ask my options. And was again confirmed to my earlier communications with D*.
If I wanted it sooner than later, to go ahead and buy from BB and they will credit my account as it is noted that I should rcv for free.
I have one waiting for me at BB to pick up on my way home and I will install myself (already have the AT9 dish installed).

I don't doubt you, it's just frustrating that they are telling people different things. I live in Dublin, and the supervisor was pretty friendly, i'll give him that. He told me he tried to order but it wouldn't let him, and that when it was available I would get it for free. I was told all they can do is order a HD recording box. They don't have an option to pick which one so you get what your installer has.
As suspected, my Sunday afternoon install did not happen. The tech called me @ 9:30PM asking if he should come over and start the job?!?! Whatever.
Anyways, talked to the tech and he recommended a morning install as D* is overbooking timeslots and PM installs are being bumped. He also confirmed having the HR20 in hand so there does not seem to be an issue with supply out of Ironwood.
Install has been rescheduled for this Friday AM. Fingers crossed.

Well, after spending almost an hour on the phone with D*, I'm supposed to be getting a HR20 for $19.95 + tax.
My first install was supposed to happen on Thursday, 9/7, but Mtn. Satellite (Ironwood) called and said that didn't have the HR20. Then Ironwood called asking to reschedule.
Called this morning and rescheduled for tomorrow, Tuesday, 9/12.
After reading this thread, I called Ironwood back and confirmed that I'm supposed to get the HR20 and she even confirmed it.
So, we'll see...
FWIW, I've currently have a "poor man's" HD setup: Sony 32" (KV-32XBR450), 17" Proview HDTV LCD, 3 H20s each controlled by a ReplayTV with upgraded HDs to record 100+ hours in the Medium setting. Even though I can't record HD, I still get 16x9 and a better picture than SD.
Can't wait for recordable HD. To bad we can increase the HR20's HD.

WooHoo, installer here with HR20 in hand. :hurah:
As I was told numerous times D* followed through with their promises.
Bought at BB last night, called to activate and get credits. Karli put me on hold to get supervisors approval for credit of 432.99 cost of box plus tax. I signed on to my D* account this morning and sure enough the credit is there.
Deactivated my H20 and H10-250, upon doing that she stated the H20 you own but the H10-250 is leased and said she will issue a call tag via Fed-Ex and they will pay for the shipping.
All-in-all, I'm Happy. They (D*(Karli)) did as promised. Didn't have too much time to play with and couldn't set up too many SL's as I will have to wait for the guid to populate. The picture does look much crisper.
Thanks to Earl, and this WHOLE site for making this information available to all.

I had my HR20 on order at technologyconnectiononline, but I got this email from them today:
We were just informed yesterday that the initial batch of inventory that was released by DIRECTV to all their distributors has a major software issue and is bring recalled. DIRECTV is scrambling at this point to try and remedy this issue, but they will not have a working batch of inventory available until October.
Anyone else heard about a recall of all the new HR20s?
Meanwhile, after a couple of phone calls yesterday, I got DTV to agree that, since I am a valued customer (with them since '98), I could get the HR20 for just 19.95 to cover shipping etc. They also set an install date for this Thursday for a new box, although of course they can't say whether or not it'll be an HR20 to replace my HR10. I can but hope, although the email above has made me very nervous about this.

There is another thread dealing with that same subject, and apparently the "recall" was not true...
People were getting similar e-mails from Beach Audio, but sources within DTV don't know where this recall info is coming from (according to the thread). It sounds like it shouldn't be anything to worry about.

I just got off the phone with D* and the CSR was very helpful and said that my local installer (Mountain Satellite....aka Ironwood) has the MPEG4 boxes and that if I scheduled an install they would more then likely have it with them.
Becasue I spent so much time on this with them, I am getting both of my DVRs upgraded for $19.99 (shipping I am told) as well as the new 5 LNB dish.
Scheduled for Thursday....we will see.

Well, mine came today. :D I got a HR20-700S. What's the "S" for...?
Total install/activation was probably 30 minutes too long, after the CSR was told that it was a HR20, he thought I was activating a H20. Once that was clarified, the DVR was finally activated.
So, far so good...
BUT, there's no over-the-air... The installer saw that I had an OTA and told me that it does work right now. Even though the manual says that it's supported and there is an "Off-Air In" connector.
Comments? Or should this be moved to another topic/thread.
There is plenty of talk that the OTA tuners are not activated yet in the HR20 Q&A Forum. go there and check.

Same thing happened to me. The DVR part wasn't turned on and the tech called several times (because he kept getting frustrated with the CSR) and was told to reset etc... He finally left with me on hold to tech support. The whole thing was because they had put through the activation as an H20.

Just ordered mine through customer retention. Straight $19.95 charge for S&H and I get to keep my old HR10-250 with no commitment. Install date for 9/17 between 1-5pm. I'm in Los Gatos so the installation should be through Ironwood out of Morgan Hill. Lets hope they still have em in stock on Sunday.
Got the major run around from retention. I was told today that they couldn't order one because it wasn't in their computer. Told the rep all about it being on their web site and all the people ordering on these forums. He told me it was only available from best buy and I should order from them. So, I said he was full of baloney(not what I said) and hung up. Next I called retention again and was offered an HR20 for $99.00 w/ $99.00 in credits. Install date is Sep 30th(I nedded a weekend).
I just wish D* would get their offers straight. Their customer service has realy gone down hill since Murdoch took over.
Union City
I guess I was one of the luckier ones who hit paydirt on the first call. The CSR initially offered it to me for $199 (and touting the latest $100 price drop), and when I said that was too much $$ he went on his computer and came back with free shipping, a $10 service credit for 12 months, and an additional $10 credit on my HBO for 6 months. So basically I am getting the whole thing for $20. They'll also install the new 5 LNB dish, and they'll also move one of my receivers to another room. I don't actually need the latter, but I will use this as a way to get them to install a 6x8 multiswitch for free, and I'm hoping to get them to drop a couple of new lines into the house as well. Install is scheduled for the afternoon of the 26th.

rbutler - Which of the local stations in the SF Bay Area are you getting in HD on your HR20 units? How about FOX (2), CBS (5), ABC (7), PBS (9). Any other locals in HD? I can not get any of these locals now with my HR10-250 and my Over The Air Antenna. I live in Lafayette and the Eastbay hills seem to kill the OTA signals. I am hoping that the HR20 will fix this problem.:)

The bay area is currently being offered the major 4 networks in HD when available. Fox (2), CBS (5), ABC (7), and NBC (11). Currently PBS is not available in HD over the satellite and you would have to get that via OTA.

Thanks for the answer. I am a little confused by your answer though. What do you mean that "the bay area is currently being offered the major 4 networks in HD when available"? Are they not available now in some location in the bay area?

My deal:
I called retention a little over a week ago and was told that I could only order through BB, but they did give me the following credits to compensate.
$10 off my bill for 12 months
Free Showtime for 6 months
Free HD fees for 6 months
$10 off HBO for 4 months
and SuperFan for free ($99 value)
I figured this was pretty sweet.
I finally got my HR20 at BB yesterday and called for installation (888-355-7530). Michael, the CSR, said that he could now offer me the HR20 and guarantee the installer would have it. As a customer for 8 years and regular subscriber to NFL package, he was willing to knock off $75 from the $299, when I asked for a discount. I went on to ask about the S&H deal that I'd read about on this site, he said that he was glad I asked, because those "were the magic words" and said he'd transfer me to the retention dept that would give me the deal.
Once transferred, the retention CSR put me on hold for about 15 minutes, while he said he'd check with several departments and supervisors, but claimed he'd not heard of that deal. After checking, he said that he could give only $99 off, if his supervisor would authorize it, but that was it.
Frustrated I decided to call back to speak with someone else in retention and try again for the S&H deal. No luck, the next CSR was totally clueless and said that her computer said that the HR20 was not in my area yet.
I called installation back and tried to get ahold of Michael again, but to no avail. Instead I got Kristen, who seemed to groan when I explain the whole situation. When I mentioned the S&H deal I'd read about, she claimed that that was totally untrue and the best she could do was match the deal that had been offered before of $99 off. (AT9 dish included, the $198 balance would span 2 months of billing, and installation will occur a week from Sunday)
My guess is that somewhere along the line, someone looked closely at my account, realized I'd already received a lot of credits and that was as far as they would go. I assume the calls are logged and the last person could see all of my "tries".... who knows...in the end I'm still very happy with the deal and can't wait to get installed.

I just called D* this morning because I woke up early and couldn't go back to sleep. I figured "Let's see what story I hear today." :eek2:
First off, over a week ago, a customer service rep told me that I could possibly swap out the HR10 in October, but not until then and to keep calling back as things may change. The person I talked to earlier this week said I can’t do a swap out yet, but I could pay for it if I wanted. I thought about that and decided to call back in today 'cause if I don't get it free, I don't mind paying like $99. The person I talked to today said that there isn’t any plans for a swap out at all and that I can’t buy the HR20 until towards the end of the year.
I told her today that I checked on the website and I have the ability to do the upgrade online, but that $299 is a lot since I just paid $399 a few months ago. I mentioned that I’ve only been with D* for 4 months and was thinking of cancelling and she didn’t seem to care. I’ve worked in a number of call centers before and the right thing to ask at this point is “why?,” but that wasn’t the case here. She mentioned to me that I’d have to pay $250+ to cancel for the remaining months on my lease.
I would really like to stay with D*, but I’m tired of getting the runaround. In all my years with C* Cable, I’ve never had to call about any issues with equipment or service. I was paying $20-$30 less that what I’m paying now and I was able to get my local networks in HD and my local RSN in HD. I can’t believe that DirecTV would give a new customer the runaround and be willing to lose one for a local HD channels issue. So, I sent them a LLLOOONNNNGG email today- it seems that the only time I get help is by sending an email first. Go figure.
HR20 w/ 5LNB dish installed on 9/15 as promised! Took about two hours total. There are definitely tradeoffs with the UI but I like the PIP and menu response times. So far, no freezes, restarts or other issues.

I never had any luck with telling them i was moving to Comcast. I did get some help when I explained that I was being screwed by the fact that I was unable to watch NBC in HD, despite the fact I spent $200 back in December to upgrade to the HR10-250 which I was told would "allow me to watch all stations in HD".
In the past 4 weeks, trying to upgrade to the HR20-700 I learned that who you talk to is the key. When I got somebody who was less then helpful, I hung up and called back and tried again. It sucks, and you get different answers each time but sooner or later somebody will tell you what you want to hear. When that happens, I tell them to update the notes in my record/account with what was agreed upon and ask them to read it back to me. Seems like once it is in your record, I have yet to have them back out of the deal.....despite future CSRs saying "that was wrong, but we will honor it anyway".

I just realized Ironwood left the old dish out behind the house where they were working. Is this standard or should I call them to come clean up their mess?

They left my old dish on my ground in IL. Apex company. I think standard.
Even when I quit E* they did not want the equipment. I had to take the LNB's and receivers and ship them back because they were leased. D* doesn't care about the LNB's. That's Charlie for you.

Well I just had my HR20 installed on Saturday. I got the $20 s&h deal and HD package free for 4 months. I had already been receiving a $20 a month for 6 months credit and $50 dollar instant credit from when I ordered Sunday Ticket. I have been a customer for 7 years and have had thier premium package and HD programing from day one. Now it is a process you have to be patient with. I didn't get the deal until my 7th call to customer retention. I was very frustrated. And it wasn't the only deal I was offered. One rep said he would credit my account $299 if I bought it from Best Buy. At the time it was $399 on the BB website (I found that out after I hung up). When I called back I got a different CSR and she said she didn't even know how he was able to do that.

I was told all they can do is order a HD recording box. They don't have an option to pick which one so you get what your installer has.
Not true. The last woman I talked to in customer retention tried calling the local installer to see if they had any. They never answered. So she sent out a work order with the HR20 on it and told me if they had it they would install it. If not the local installer would call me to reschedule. Like I said in my previous post, got my HR20 installed on Sat.. On a side note, the guy who installed it said he has been doing at least one a day.

Installation was completed this past Sunday, 9/17. Everything is working perfectly as far as I can tell (only had the box for a day so far). They let me keep my old HR10-250 and when I activated the new HR20 they said the box was shown as being owned and not leased...excellent.
I also had the $99 charge to credit card and then $99 credit added to my bill. Overall I am very pleased with DTV and the way they handled the my HR20 upgrade. :)
Edit: Also, the Ironwood guy came out to my house with 3 HR20s just for my job because I guess they have been having problem with the units being duds, etc. The first one he tried booted up and worked flawlessly to this point.

After the 3rd try, I finally was able to order the HR20. The second time I tried, the CSR told me the payment timed out on their side and they would call back to confirm in 24-48 hours (they never did).
So I called back this morning, deal was $99 + tax and S&H but with the S&H credited to my account. (The second time I called there was no S&H, and no free DVR either).
They said the earliest date for installation was October 4th.
I'm just tired of being jerked around and told something different every time I call.

I called yesterday to order the HR20, after calling on Friday as well. They were unable to complete my order for some reason then. So yesterday I called retention again, and they said the receivers are out of stock and that I should call back in a week or two. But I did get it confirmed for $99, with $10 off HD pack for 6 months and free Showtime and Starz for 3 months, so almost free. Then the nice customer service rep talks to me about NFLST, and I said it was too expensive. She offered it to me for $100 off, and free super fan, so I took it - $150 total. Oh, I already have an HR10-250, and a hughes HD receiver, so I'll still be able to watch all the HD games, just won't be able to do interactive stuff for a little bit.
I had my install scheduled through Ironwood for between 1-5pm Monday (9/19). After numerous calls to both D* Retention and Ironwood, I got a call from the installer around 5:30pm saying he'd be out around 8pm.
He showed up at about 8:15pm Monday night, and said he couldn't do the install, because they didn't tell him it was an apartment. At that point, I'd already gone through mad and come out the other side (I worked from home on Monday to accomodate the installation). He told me that the 5-LNB dish wouldn't fit on the tripod my 3-LNB dish used, as it was too heavy and the pole diameter's bigger.
However, he told me he'd come out at 6pm Tuesday after he finished his orders, with the proper equipment, and get me set up.
Tuesday (9/20, last night) rolls around, and I hadn't heard from him. I'd left work a bit early to make it home in time to meet him at 6. By 6:30, I called him to see what was going on (he'd called me the previous night trying to find my address, and I had his number on Caller ID). He told me he was in San Mateo and headed down right then.
He showed up at 7:50, with the 5-LNB dish, the HR20-700, and a wooden pallette on which to mount the dish and stalk. I carried the dish and receiver up while he handled the pallette.
The installation went very smoothly, except his call to D* to activate, where he had to go several rounds in explaining that it was an HR20, not an H20. The D* rep ended up having to cancel and re-activate the card for some reason or other (I was only half paying attention).
In the process, we were chatting, and it seems that Ironwood only has 100 people in the entire Bay Area, and they're working from about 6:30am until 8-9pm every night dealing with the HR20 installs. The installer seemed to know what he was doing, and even got the TV set up correctly (an older Panasonic plasma with component and VGA inputs.) The only thing I had to tweak was enabling DD, since I use optical out to my A/V receiver.
He was done in about 30 minutes, and the dish, though enormous, doesn't seem to be occupying significantly more space on my patio than the previous triple-LNB/tripod combo was.
All in all, I'm quite happy with the installation, even if I did get incredibly frustrated on Monday. I tipped him $20, in part because he did an end-run around the whole installation resceduling nightmare for me.

That's good. I am due to have mine installed next Wednesday (27th). The first available at the time was 1-5 on Tues, but having run through this problem on the Mover's program last year I knew the afternoon was a crap shoot. I asked them to put me in 8-12 on Wed instead so that it would be more likely to be done at a reasonable hour.
It also helps that work is only 2.5 miles from home, so it will be easy to go in when it's done.

I should probably mention that the only thing he did was the dish install and HR20 activation/config. I did the HR20 installation into my A/V rack myself, while he started working on the dish. I don't let anyone touch my A/V gear but me. :) Too much money invested and too much convoluted wiring going from my A/V receiver, Zektor switcher, power conditioner, etc.

My install yesterday went relatively smooth. They had the HR20 this time and got everything set-up with no issues (even the 1st software update).
The only issue was that the Bay Area HD feeds were down most of the day so I didn't see any local HD until 6pm or so.
Chalk a 2nd one up to Hayward-Ironwood. Looks like everyone else should be good to go.
Oh yeah, and the installers were complaining about their long hours getting the new equipment out so be warned - be nice.
