I am getting new shingles on my house. They will have to remove the dish. Do I have to schedule DirecTV to reinstall it afterwards?I've never seen a roofer that was a satellite installer, I've seen the results of some that thought they were.:( I've also seen the dish left in place and the new roofing cut around the mounting foot so they didn't have to reinstall the dish, another bad idea. Schedule a reinstall as soon as possible after the roofers estimate they will finish your roof.

My roofer removed all old shingles and reshingled most of the roof as is normally done except in the dish mounting area. Here he simply unbolted the mount, then removed the old shingles beneath it and put down new ones, and then remounted the dish in the same holes, being sure to fill the holes with silicone first. There was absolutely no change in signal strength, nor should there be because the dish was mounted in exactly the same place. Check with the roofer to be sure that he has experience maintaining dish alignment, and let him know that if he damages the dish, he has to pay for a new one. :)

Also the lag screws may not hold as well going back into the same holes.:)

If you have the protection plan, have an installer come out the day the roofers are doing that part of the room and have the installer take down the dish, have him wait a little bit, (offer him a drink etc. to use up time) then when there done (should be long for a little area) have him re-install the dish. That is what my friends did.

The most important points are;

When removing the dish, do not change any of the angular tilt or elevation adjustments on the dish.

The change of the topography or the surface of the roof made by the shingles will change, even if the original holes and bolts are used to mount the pole. Accordingly, the MAST must be replumbed.

With the mast plumbed and the dish replaced, all that needs to be done is to place the receiver in the signal strength mode and swing the dish from side to side until peaked. Tighten the bolts holding the dish to the mast, and you're done.

or just simply move it to the facia somewhere. as far as waiting around for your roofers to roof that section, that may not be possible, we are coming into the busy season in some areas with the nfl sunday ticket and all, a cold drink may not be enough to convince him to stick around try tipping, tipping your installer for a job well done or waiting on you to complete a task never hurts and gives him the incentive not to just slap it back up with a hack job cause he was in a hurry due to the heat/cold/timeframe for that day. Just a thought....

I talked to the roofers yesterday. They said they routinely deal with satellite dishes and will remove and remount it as best as they can. Seems fair enough. There was actually a provision for it on my insurance statement thing. (Hail damaged roof - insurance is paying for it).

That has nothing to do with your insurance company making sure it is installed correctly. The insurance will pay to have it detached and reset, as required. Your insurance company makes no guarantees on any installation of your dish, roofing materials, etc. That is up to your contractor.

Actually, the insurance company does make sure it is installed correctly because they don't pay the remainder of the money until I am satisfied with everything. But, like I said, the roofers only said they will put it back as best they can. Which means, they will mount it where it was but if it needs realignment then I need to get DirecTV to come out. Which is fair. I'm just happy they don't leave it dangling.

The roofers came and put new shingles on. They took the dish off and put it back exactly where it was but I don't get a signal anymore. But the roofers were cool and told me that they will cover any charges that DirecTV charges me to realign it.

I'm glad someone brought this question up, actually. I'm getting close to the same point with my roof. This answers the questions that I know I would have been having at that point...
