I'm thinking seriously about ditching my cable company and signing on to DTV with the current special (sunday ticket etc)

I've got a few questions that I've been able to find clear answers for...

1) With the current HD-DVR, will I be able to recieve my HD locals (Wash. DC Area) with this box (I Know they're available in non-hd as my neighbor has them)?

2) Is there any way under the sun to get a "resonable" price for this DVR? This lease fee crap is just crazy, and as of now has been the deal killer. Since calling them to inquire about service last week they've been calling me back daily trying to get me to sign on....problem is, they're not offering anything different from day to day.

I need one standard DVR, one HD-DVR, and one standard reciever....If I could get all of this for a reasonable up-front price I'd be a customer today......even my crappy cable co. brings me a HD DVR as well as a standard DVR free of charge....

TIA For any insight!

1. Yes
2. Well, the price is the price. It'll get cheaper over time, but how long do you want to wait? The current NFL Sunday Ticket promotion is a sweet price break, too.

Agreed, the programming costs aren't the sticking point. It's the cost of equipment that the cable company doesn't charge......this goes a LONG way toward the WAF (Wife acceptance factor)

I just got off the phone with them again, I tried to get them (after reading another post where someone pulled it off somehow) to give me a rebate for both a SD-DVR and a HD receiver....They wouldn't budge a bit ......Even after telling them I'd be willing to pay the rediculous price for the superfan package with sunday ticket -He wasn't even willing to ask a "manager"....assuming one exists ;)....even after telling him we could close the deal right now if he could do so. I guess they just don't need/want my monthly dollars.

I'm trying everything I can to become a source of monthly income for them, if they insist on charging me to do so I'll have to stick with what I've got .......which I REALLY hate to do honestly.

In case it makes a difference in your decision making, in regards to question 1, litzdog911 is correct in answering "yes", but the truth is the current HD-DVR (which is the HR10-250) can receive/record HD locals by using an OTA antenna - it cannot receive these via the satellite.

The next generation HD-DVR (HR20) will receive HD locals via the satellite, but is currently only being rolled out in California. I have no idea of an ETA for the DC area.

Zeos do you go to the Grocery store and barter over the price of a roast or do you pay the price. DISH and Directv set their prices just like any other store, if you want it you pay it or wait for a sale. Just because you want to change the terms dosen't mean they can or will barter with you.

Which would be fine if I weren't reading/hearing about everyone else making similar "deals" with them .....I just thought I'd ask to see what others are doing to get theirs.

Now they'll spend another week calling me back every night trying to talk me into signing up I'm sure.....I kid you not, I've got 4 messages on my voicemail and they've spoke to either myself or my wife on several more occasions since I initially called them.....

The CSR tells me that their "working on" a deal where they can be more like the cable companies and lease equipment without the up-front costs....yea, thats likely to get me to break out the CC right now......

Bad thing is, if I were already a customer they'd just about offer me the world to stay....

Go with a third party not directly thru DirecTV. Just do a search online and you should be able to find some nice equipment deals.
