I have to have a Directv Tech. come out Saturday to move my dish higher because of trees. Are there any concerns with having it mounted directly on the roof, bolted into the shingles?

If it's installed and sealed correctly, no. If it's an AT-9 install, I'd ask for the monopoles to be installed also to give it extra support against wind.

The obvious concern would be leaking where they attach the mounting bolts. The installer should use caulk or silicone sealant around the bolts to seal the holes.

If the AT-9 is mounted directly to the house or roof --- BE ABSOLUTELY SURE the lag bolts (ALL 6 OF THEM!!!!) on the mounting bracket SECURELY PENETRATE ONE OR MORE STUDS AND/OR ROOF JOISTS AND ARE WEATHER-TREATED WITH SILICONE OR SIMILAR MATERIAL!!! Simply turning them into the siding/clapboards won't work.....for long!!! The monopoles are a very good idea.....however, the installers who did my work did NOT use the ones I had, assuring me their install was secure---- 7 months and MANY 50-60 mph windstorms later, it's STILL giving signal-strength readings spot-on where they were from day one.....:D
IMHO.....I'd spring for having the monopoles anyway.....cheap insurance..... Good luck!

Absolutely !!! Make absolute sure the mounting bolts go into STUDS or roof rafters. That's a heavy dish with a large wind surface area and will wobble all over the place in even the slightest breeze if it's only mounted to the shingles and OSB board (decking or underlayment). The braces should also be anchored into STUDS. When complete, the dish should be as solid as if it were anchored in concrete.

This isn't the AT-9 dish. It is the three LNB model.

The aforementioned suggestions still apply to either type of dish.

D* is upgrading me to an HR10-250 and 5 LBN dish in September. I currently have the 3 LBN dish mounted on my sloped garage roof (it's been there since 1/03 with no problems). From the ground, it looks like the mounting plate has 4 holes with lag bolts going into the garage roof. Will the AT-9's mounting plate be the same size? Or will everything for my 3 LBN dish have to be removed and replaced with all new parts? What is this 'monopole' support I've read about? Anyone have any pitures?

Also, how many lines will come from the AT-9? My 3 LBN has 4 RG6 lines coming from it to my basement and all are homerunned to my 2 Tivos. Does the AT-9 also have 4 outputs so that the installer can just unhook the RG6 lines from the old dish and connect them to the new one? Does the AT-9 have a built-in multiswitch like the 3 LBN as I don't have any multiswitches except the one in my dish.

Sorry for all the questions!

The mounting for the AT-9 is much more heavy-duty than that on the single or 3-lnb dish. The installer may be able to install it in the same location (mine was placed several feet away on my roof, since a tree has grown since my original installation and would probably have caused blockage fairly soon). It comes with two struts (monopoles) which should be attached to give it more rigidity (sort of like a tripod). The AT-9 has a built-in switch with 4 outputs like the 3-LNB dish, so the cables should be able to be just switched over.

Tech came today and moved my dish. He attached ot to the chimney. It was indeed a line of site issue as the 110 channelsa have gone from a signal in the 30's to close to 100.

I will be getting the new 5 lnb dish installed. Will it hurt my fireplace chimney if it is secured to it?

AT-9 is the model number for the 5 LNB dish.

It's a much heavier dish, I wouldn't chimney mount it personally.

Does anyone have photos of these monopoles installed? Thanks for the info.

Was the dish a AT9? the reason I'm asking is I'm not sure if securing a big dish to my chimney would damage the dhimney.

A supervisor from Ironwork's, the installers that will be installing the AT-9 came to my house to check out where the dish can be installed. He said it would be no problem in attaching it to the roof's eave. He said it will be strong enough to hold the dish without hurting the roof and causing any leaks. They said they will be using the monopoles. Any thoughts on that?

As long as it's lagged into a stud and they seal everything correctly you should have no issues.
