View Full Version : HD in my area
I live just north of Baltimore and I want to know what HD programming would be available to me. I am thinking about jumping on the free HR10-250 bandwagon until they role the new stuff out. Any suggestions?

If you get the HR10-250 and you have 3 lnb dish, you will be able to get ESPN HD, ESPN2 HD, Universal HD, TNT HD, HDnet, HDnet movies, and Discovery HD. I will check and let you know if you can get local HD channels yet.

Yes, you can get Local HD channels. (ABC, CBS, NBC, and Fox). But, you will need a 5 lnb dish and an H20 or HR20 receiver to get them. Also, sometime in 2007 they will be switching all of there HD channels to the new satellites and you will need this equipment to get them when they do that. I hope this helps!
I only really want it for the locals. Yes HBO would be nice and watching my Nittany Lions in HD would be awesome, but the locals are what I want. I guess there would be no reason for me to get the HDTiVo because it won't do the locals. Thanks for the input. I wonder how long it will be before the HR20 is available here.

You can get all the locals OTA, I live up in Cecil County and do the same. If you are just north of the city, you'd just need a small UHF only antenna to get everything, you may even be able to get away with an indoor one.

Opps! I forgot you get HBO HD and Showtime HD if you subscribe to those packages. Sorry!! I would make sure they install the 5lnb dish if you upgrade. The HR20 is out now but, only available in LA. It should be avail. to the rest of us shortly.
Does anyone know a good source for finding what OTA locals are available to you. mjones73 thanks for the info. I am in Towson so I think I might be able to pick some of these up.

Everything available is outlined in this thread at avsforum.

I basically get 2-1, 2-2, 2-3, 11-1, 11-2, 13-1, 22-1, 22-2, 22-3, 22-4, 22-5, 45-1, 45-2, 54-1, and 54-2 where I am.
I don't know much about HD OTA antennas. Is there a recommendation for a brand and type or a good resource for research?

Go to antennaweb.org and get your results for only digital stations, see how far from the towers you are. You'll only need an UHF antenna to get the B-more channels, if you are close enough, something like the Silver Sensor would probably work for you.

Being in Towson, you should have no problems getting Baltimore locals. They've all got fairly strong signals. I live near Annapolis, and I get them all with our crappy indoor HD antenna (sorry, I forget the brand name right now - from Radio Shack, though). We very rarely have to move it to get any of the Baltimore stations (2, 11, 13, 45, and 54).
We get some DC stations too OTA also, but that takes a little more efford. Sadly, the one DC station we WANT (WB 50 for hockey games) is the farthest one out from us and is real hit or miss.

A higher gain antenna would probably help your situation, might require mounting something outside.
