I've continued to have issues with D* ever since I purchased my HR10-250 5 months ago so take this message with a grain of salt.

However, I had intended to keep the HR10-250 and order another one because I like the TIVO interface and dual buffers are important to me.

I set up an installation of a new HR10-250 for this morning with D* specifically so that I could ensure getting it instead of the HR20. Well, at 10am this morning the tech called and said they were out of the HR10's and he couldn't install it anymore. He stated the new HD-DVR's (I'm assuming HR20) would arrive in their warehouse next Thursday and that they would reschedule me for Sat, Sep 2nd.

So, I called D* Retention and they stated "Huh - I didn't even know they were available in Dallas". Typical response from D*.

Anyway - to make a long story even longer, I asked him if they would swap out my HR10 so that I could have 2 of the same systems and he won't, saying there is no swap out program at this time. I could pay $399 and get one, but it would be a lease so I"m paying $399 and $4.99/mo which in theory just seems wrong so I didn't do it.:nono2:
So what I have to do is get the free HR20, which I was promised (thanks to the forum for this) and wait to replace my hr10.

  Doesn't really make sense for D* to send people out twice, but I'm not really surprised given their lack of expertise in customer service and common sense.

I'll post pictures next Saturday if they indeed do deliver the HR20.

Thanks for everyone's help. I hope that I'm happy with the HR20 because I really like the TIVO system and the dual buffers.

This is curious - I'm in FW and I'm scheduled for an install of the -250 on Saturday 9/2 (my second -250 for the house). I'm curious what I will be getting now.

I'm near Allen, TX and have an install scheduled for 9-2 also, and DirecTV have told me it will "definitely" be the HR10.....I have a 3-lnb dish already installed so there is no dish on the order, I would need an AT-9 (and a new multiswitch) if they are going to install the HR20......but we shall see!!!

What the local installer's have in stock in their warehouse, a csr cant know without contacting the local office and they contacting their warehouse so if the instllaton company is out of the HR10, and yes the HR20 is only slated for launch in the LA market and the info hasn't changed; others that have it apart from Earl outside the LA market lucky people. wish i could get my hand on one so my girl can stop recording her "stuff" on mine

do not pay a cent (except for possible shipping charge) for the hr20. call in as many times as you have to ..to customer retention until you get a csr that will give it to you for free.

I'd love it if they brought an HR10. That's what I wanted this Saturday when they cancelled the appointment. If they call and cancel this Saturday, I'm going to very specifically ask them if they can bring an HR10.

I have seen that argument before. The comparison between D* and other electronics makers is invalid. D* makes their money off of selling service to us. The electronics we use to do that should be unimportant to them. It should only be as important as to have their customers happy enough to keep paying for their service.

Sorry to steer this further OT with my first post, but I have an issue with the reply from the supposed CSR.
If Sony forced me to lease their TVs and, if Sony decided that how they deliver their very limited premium content for which I had to pay extra for in a brand new way that their equipment could no longer support in the near future, then you better bet your a** that I would! . Heck, I would even fight to pay the S/H! :bonk1:

well he doesn't lease his equipment at this time and wants to be upgraded at no charge now i understand everybody wants a deal so do i if i want to upgrade i save up and cough up and i can bargain with a csr as you may have noticed on here and the avs forums you have to spend a lot of time trying to get free equipment until you meet that person tht gives it to you but remember what goes around comes around

Placed my order with D* yesterday, talked to three different reps, and made sure
they understood the order was for an HR20, and anything else would be refused.

According the rep I placed the order with, that is no problem, that is what they will bring. ( Sept 11 is the install date ),...

One rep I got disconnected from, and the first rep was not up to speed on HD at all,
so I decided to call back and get a more informed rep,....

Fingers crossed,....

I also live in the DFW area. The CSR told me that the unit would not be released unitl mid September and that there is nothing she could do for me right now. She also said if I ordered insallation right now that I would end up with the HR10.

You need to call back. It's a game of CSR roulette. You have to keep calling till you get someone who knows what they are talking about. Or you could just ask for a supervisor, but that's a gamble too.

My installation is scheduled for Saturday Sept, 2 for the 5 lnb dish and the HR20.

As for the Tivo Taliban out there, I had UltimateTV and that was 2 steps above Tivo 6 years ago. You only had to press record twice on the guide to set up a series record and you didn't have to wait 10 minutes to get control back. You could also see which shows were going to be recorded in the future on the guide.

I started this thread and I just confirmed they are still coming between 8am and Noon tomorrow. They could not confirm which unit and I don't really care now - I want either an hr10 or hr20. Pictures asap.

Well, 9:12am and the phone rings. Installer, "I have an HR10-250, but now I don't have an off-air antenna". You won't need it with the hr20, do you want to wait?

Since I originally wanted to keep the hr10 and am not to thrilled with be a "tester" for D*, I asked him to call other installlers and find an off-air antenna.

He just called and found one, so he's bring the OTA and the HR10, which is what I wanted last week.

I'll be happy because I really like the TIVO interface and I think it will work for another year. I got the unit free anyway.

So, I guess for those that hopes the HR20's would be in Dallas/Fort Worth today, you'll be disappointed.

However, I'm ok with this.:nono2:

OK, so the installer called me and said they could not do my install today because "the technician had a car accident". I'd like to believe them but it sounds like this is standard excuse #14 from the Great Book of Excuses!
Rescheduled for Thursday...

DFW Installation Blown..Will D* Never Learn:(

Was converting from E*to D*

My order was placed on 8/13 for an install in 8/26 for a 4mpeg receiver, HDDVR. I have a long notebook of names and times promised...Finally after getting passed through about a dozen people this AM. I have been repeately told I was getting the 5lnb/MPEG4 system. I registered and signed into D* website and look at the order there and it showed an 3LNB system. The older receivers will not work with the 5lnb dish.

Said Dallas not until December.:nono2: :nono2: :nono2: :nono2: :nono2: :nono2: :nono2: :nono2: :nono2:

Maybe irrelevant but the D* website only shows what was on the original order, it does not show what the installer actually brings! If the original intent was to install the HR10 it will show 3-lnb. If they are actually going to install the HR20 they won't usually bother to update the D* website with the new dish......

I'm twenty miles from cedar hill (where the broadcast networks originate their OTA signals) and the OTA is working great. Anyone in DFW that can get OTA should keep the hr10 and wait for the bugs to go away on the HR20.

One down, one to go.

I just got my R15 delivered and am waiting for my HD dvr to be delivered. It's amazing they could not consolidate two orders into one delivery for the same day.

Originally I ordered an HR10-250 but am now very curious if I will get the HR20 instead. I'm good either way so we shall see!

EDIT
The HD DVR arrived and it was the -250 model. Not a problem because I was really hoping for the slimline version of the AT9 instead of the clunky version that's out there now. I also was not looking forward to having someone fall through my ceiling due to a really tight crawlspace attic tonight either ...

The info on the wrong equipment and the availability date scares me. I too pulled up my order online, but there was no descriptions as to the type of equipment that was being delivered. I went into my account and looked at "view orders". Is there another place I should be looking?

For those of you in the Dallas area looking for updates. Here's what happened to me today...

I called a CSR about 2 days ago to inquire about getting an HD DVR and dish for a new media room I am building. She said if I wasn't in a hurry that I should hold off until October when the new HR20 and 5 LNB package would be available. She did not quote a price.

She then sent me a generic email with the name of the hardware and said they would be contacting me soon. I did a search on the HR20 and found this newsgroup. First off - what a great resource this group is in "getting smart" on what D* is doing.

I took a lot of negotiating cue's from folks in this group and am happy to say that I just got off the phone D* and have the HR20 and 5LNB package being installed in 2 weeks. I got the package for $99 plus an additional free standard receiver and free installation.

I took note of the wide range of experiences that everyone had with supervisors and the Retention department and felt comfortable with the deal - as I was not swapping a unit - and did not have a prior HD DVR (ie HD10). I'm working with a standard def Tivo DVR. That said - I didn't want to push too hard in case they came back and said the deal is for HD10 upgrades only)

With all that said - when I pulled up my bill online to check the status of the account - I noticed that there WAS a line item that referred to a swap - even though I told her the HR20 was for an additional room. I'll fight that battle at installation time.

Bottom line is that D* seems very fragmented in their method of response and how they are packaging price. I'll echo the sentiments of others in this group - keep dialing and smiling until you get the friendly person who can make the deal you're willing to live with. I jumped at $99, but I thought I was going to have to pay $399....in my mind I've got $200 more dollars to invest in the projector:lol:

I would tell because the order type was not for a 5LNB system as is required at least here in Dallas area, but a 3lnb---which is not compatible.

What's on the D* web site as your order does not necessarily match what the installer brings. I speak from previous experience! And there are people in LA who had an order showing the 3-lnb dish who actually got the AT-9, the installer brought the HR20, the correct dish and multiswitch. However, given all the confusion I can believe that anything may happen. I would not be surprised if someone posts that the installer brought the HR20 and a 3-lnb.

Given all the stories I've read in this group - nothing would surprise me. Even though I had the CSR read the exact order back to ensure it was the HR20 and the 5lnb - plus additional standard receiver - I won't believe it until it's up on my roof and working.

The good thing is if I do have to call and complain about a wrong order - I've got more than enough ammunition given the content contained in this forum...

I'll let you know what shows up on my doorstep in three weeks.

My install which was rescheduled from 9/2 to Thursday 9/7 was cancelled by someone at DirecTV (person unknown). It was then rescheduled for 9/21. At the same time the order was changed to include a 5-lnb dish so I guess I will be getting the HR20. I talked to the installer who said they are no longer sending out HR10s, every install in DFW will now be an HR20.

I guess I'll wait till next week to call. We had D* for about 10 years, until last November. I just want 2 HR20s & an AT9 dish at a decent price (heck I'll even sign for 2 years & STSF)...is that too much to ask? lol

marlen

I would tell because the order type was not for a 5LNB system as is required at least here in Dallas area, but a 3lnb---which is not compatible.

When I decided to call back and check my order a new CSR told me that the original CSR DID NOT put me down for the HR20-700, but had me down for the H10.

I told her that I had the original CSR READ BACK TO ME 3X the order. (Iwas tempted to record the conversation - but not sure of the legalities of that). She said SHe in no way can give me the HR20 for anything less than $299.

I asked to be put through to Retention. Told her about my 10 years with D* - 6years of football and hockey packages. She responded by saying "I can offer you the HR-20 with the 5LNB Dish, plus free installation for Free. S*H $19.

I paused.....tried for an additional free standard receiver, but she said c'mon - I just gave you the HR20 for FREE....I felt guilty and said okay $49 for the receiver.

I was still ahead from my original $99 plus S&H and way ahead off where I was three days ago when I thought I was going to have to fork over $300 for the HR20 and $75 for the Dish.......Good thing I found this group.

Oh Yea...just for kicks - she threw in the first 4 months of HD programming for Free.

Just bought my first HD tv.

Had the Hughes Tivo Series 2.

Wanted to get Directv in HD - including locals.

LOVE Tivo - but if Directv's software is close, I'm ok with it.

Played CSR roulette.

First CSR (last Friday, 9/1): DFW will get them in 2 weeks to 2 months

Second CSR - retention (yesterday, 9/5): DFW will get them in a few weeks

Third CSR - retention (today, 9/6): In a few weeks.. - I told her I was considering leaving - .. let me check again.... available now. Install scheduled for next week.

Whined about $399 being to much. Offered a $250 discount. Whined about $150 being too much.

Final cost: $19.95 s/h
6 mos. HBO for $2/ month
$10 discount off total bill for one year
Free NFL Super fan
4 months of free HD pkg.

Hopefully the install on 9/11 will go as planned....

I'm happy :D

Called this morning to see what kind of time frame and the CSR told me "soon" and "very soon". I said, "soon like this week?" and she said spryly "soon is more than likely this week and I should call back Wednesday". That sounds promising!!!! Still getting $250 off, free installation, HD package free for 6 months and Showtime free for 6 months since I already subscribe to HBO.

Good news is that if I buy it through Best Buy they will honor the $250 credit so I think I am going to go that route.

If anyone just needs to go buy/pick up an HR20 in the DFW area, there are 8 or 9 of them at the IRVING Best buy (on 183)- they're up on the shelf above the TV's. ASk for them and someone can get them for you. Just wanted to let you know!

After 12 different calls today, I finally was able to get an install sched for 9/29. Only being charged for handling (21.95). $299 service credit to offset the cost. I then went to best buy and saw them on the shelf. After the store closed, I called back and told them what I saw. Was offered $299 instant svc credit and $10 off for 12 mos if I buy it in the store. Doing the math, this means they are actually PAYING ME $20 to go to best buy and pick it up. If i didn't have a flight in the morning, I would buy it first thing before they run out. Call, call, and call again and you should be able to get the same offer.

I just moved to Richardson, TX from Chicago and had a movers installation date of Sept. 13th. I called to verify that they would be coming out later today to install my service and then I asked about the possibility of adding new hardware. I was offered a HR20 at no additional cost to be installed tomorrow with my 2 HDTivos, 1directivo, and one HD receiver.

Great day White Sox lost, Cubs won in extra innings.

I got shafted by CSR's.... all said it was only in LA, so I blew a gasket and then ...

I finally got to talk to retention ... they saw a note from the CSR's saying that they were only offering me $100 off the HR20, so that's the best deal I could get.

I've got an HR20 plus AT9 dish with "free" HD package for 4 months for $199, to be installed Sept 25 (a monday).

This sucks. I guess this is since I don't subscribe to premium movie channels or NFL Sunday Ticket therefore I'm not one of their ideal customers.

I called and called D* all this week and tried to get some kind of deal, I could not get past the "later this fall" crap. Finally talked the wife into the Best Buy option last night, price dropped $100 there overnight, got it, activated it and got about $150 off in credits from the csr. I'm happy now but I think it would've drove me crazy to keep calling D*...

Allready had 5lnb dish and HD service, did the install myself.

Hi Everyone,

I'm thinking of getting an HR20 later this month. I currently have 2 non-HD, Tivo based DVRs and subscribe to NFL Sunday Ticket.

What is the arguement generally used to get a deal on the HR20? Do you have to threaten to leave Directv? Or what?

I would like a discount on the HR20 and the free HD pkg for a few months. It would also be great to get the Superfan upgrade to the Sunday Ticket thrown in so I can watch the games in HD.

Also, I currently have to cables routed through my house for DirecTV. Will I need more for the HR20?

Finally, are the local channels available in Dallas in HD?

Thanks,
Kevin

Hey guys thought I throw my post out here. I live in McKinney, TX by the way. They have these units at Best Buy right now. I call them and ask them that I am thinking about getting one but need the 5 lnb dish. They ask if I already had the HR10-250. I say yes and they say they can swap them out for the new HR20 for $99. So I get receiver, install and dish for $99. I am cool with that. Girl sounded real nice, and hopefully installer will bring the right stuff.

I think they have plenty of these in the DFW area to go around.Being one of the first markets to get mpg4 I think they won't screw us in the DFW area.

Were any of you who have successfully ordered the upgraded HR20 from DTV required to have some sort of letter before they would place the order?

I called them today, talked to someone in customer service... they offered to upgrade for $99. I asked about any better deals, they transferred me to Retention, who said they would give me a service credit of $49 to offset half the cost, but either way they couldn't place the order until I received a letter with some sort of offer code from DirecTV telling me that I was eligible to receive the HR20.

She kept repeating the requirement for the letter and was typing away furiously, so I'm quite certain she's now updated my account to reflect that requirement. Anyone have any luck without the letter?

Separate question from a relative home theater newbie...

I currently have a 3-LNB dish with one HDDVR, one SDDVR, and one SD receiver. Each has only one cable run to it.

When I get the HR-20, i'm planning on having them run new cables at the same time (which i'm prepared to pay for)... planning to end up with 3 cables to the HR20 (2 for SAT, one for OTAHD when it becomes available), 2 to the SDDVR (both for SAT), and one to the SD receiver.

Can we get HD locals in the DFW area (I'm up in Little Elm, almost 50 miles from the HD transmission towers) from DTV, or do I *have* to get an OTA HD antenna? As someone who has absolutely no intention of crawling up in my attic, does it just make sense to have the DTV installer put one of their OTA HD antennas in for me when he installs the 5-LNB dish? If I can get the HD Locals without the OTA antenna, is it just a simple call to customer service, or do I have to somehow demonstrate that I'm essentially too far (according to my original DTV installer) to pick up the signals OTA?

We get HD locals via MPEG-4 here in DFW (5 LNB needed). They are also available in SD. Just have them add locals to your account, no antenna needed.

Since I've already got the SD locals via my HR10, I'm guessing I'll just start to see the HD locals once I get the HR20 (whenever that happens, once I receive "the letter", unless I can convince a different CSR tomorrow to go ahead and order it for me)... Thanks again.

Well I guess if Best Buy did not have them, and you know seem to have a letter it looks like the model is getting scarce. Understandable with the high demand and all.

I am having someone come out this Friday supposedly with the HR20 and the new 5 LNB dish. Hope they don't screw anything up.

I hate how Best Buy says they have stuff available, and then you find out they don't. The receiver was in today's ad as well. So stupid!

Anyways I will keep you guys posted if I get my receiver and dish this Friday. My install is between 8-12. So I will be ready! Also tell them you want early install, cause some of the guys won't come if it is too dark.

HR20 and AT-9 dish installed today (and a WB68 multiswitch). The installer even brought monopoles! I had originally arranged to have an HR10 but the install got delayed and it was impossible to guarantee an HR10 so I decided to take whatever arrived.
Cost me $19.99 plus tax.....
Only problem was getting the HD locals activated, took two attempts and about 15 minutes.

Just talked with CSR at 888-355-7530 at D* and I ordered the HR20 and 5LNB dish, to be installed next Thursday, the 28th...

I told her I wanted the same deal others were getting through their retention department, and so instead of the flat $99, she offered me 6 months of $10 discount off of my HBO subscription, bringing the net down to $39...

I take it !

Will post again after it is installed to let you know how it went...

They look fine but it takes the HR20 sometime to put the picture up. It's not instant. I also have an over the air antenna and the picture looks slightly (I mean slightly}better due to compression of signal.

Well the guy called he was running late yesterday due to the storms. Got there about 5:30 PM and installed the dish and lines. Everything went smooth it just took him until 8:15 PM to finish. Then when we called DirecTV their system was down and they needed to call me back when it was up to activate the receiver. I called back about 9:30 PM and we got everything setup the locals did take about 5 minutes to show up. I was however disappointed that the one local I was looking forward to having HD in is not available yet, The CW. Reading the board I noticed that it should be coming real soon like a week or two.

I'm in Allen as well and my installation went like clockwork last week, although they were a little stressed out about the steepness of my roof (they replaced the existing dish attached to my chimney). They apparently have sent some guys up from El Paso to help out with installations in this area. I haven't had any problems with my box and have recorded around 20 things flawlessly so far.

I'm in Allen. I got one HR20 on 9/15, then had the 5LNB installed on 9/26 by Mastec. I then picked up another HR20 at CC on 9/30. I get 0's on all six transponders on 99(b). I get 100 on 103(a) transponders 1 & 5, 0's on 2, 3, 4, & 6. Same readings on both HR20's, so at least it's consistent. Not sure if all 0's on 99(b) is correct, so I'd love to hear if anyone else in the DFW area sees something on 99(b) on an HR20. I sent an email to D* to ask of 0's on all 99(b) transponders was normal in the DFW area. I'll let you know what I hear from them.

All I can say is good luck. I was scheduled for an install in Allen this morning, which was rescheduled from 2 weeks ago after a screwup on DTV's end, and they called Saturday and said they have no HR20s. They are anticipating a *2 week* delay, but even that is not certain. Maybe your install is through a different company and you'll get lucky, but don't hold your breath. At least in my case it is a second HR20, but I'd sure like to get my 5lnb dish so I can start using HD locals.

They are the same...4, 5, 8, 11, 27 (for some reason). The CW33HD appears on ours in the guide as if it'll be HD soon. The SD of CW33 is on there. The stations are in SD, as well, with the same #s. By default, if you press 4, 5, 8, 11, or 27, it'll goto that channels HD version. To get to the SD, press channel up on the remote.

Thank the Lord!! I am not alone. I'm in Stephenville and was told the last week of August that the HR20 wasn't available in my area yet but would be within the week. I call CR the next week and they say that the the HR20 is still a couple of weeks away from being available in my area. I call back two weeks later and they take my order, charge my credit card, and then put the credit on my account. They give me an installation date of Thursday Sept 28. My wife stays home from work and after never hearing from anyone on the 28th I call D* and they call the installer who says that they didn't come out because my home phone number was disconnected. It wasn't. Install is rescheduled for Oct. 3. They call on 10/3 and say that they aren't coming because they don't have the HR20 in stock, but a truck is coming the next day and they reschedule for Thursday Oct. 5. They call on Oct. 5 and say that the truck didn't come in and they aren't doing the install. This is the third time my wife has taken off of work to be at home for an installation that didn't happen. When talking to CR that day they wouldn't give me anything free HBO, Showtime, etc. but did waive my two year committment if I decided to cancel. After speaking with my wife she wants to go to Dish. I call back to cancel and they say that I can't cancel and I shouldn't haven't believed the person that told me that I could. I went balistic and they have now given me a $10 per month credit for four months, a one time $60 credit ($20 for each missed appointment) and six months of free Showtime. They also have FINALLY given me the installer's phone number. When I called them they said that they were told that they would have a shipment coming in on October 23, but that they weren't optimistic that it would happen because they've been told that before.

Daniel from Mastec arrived just a hair within his 8am-12pm window. He was here for a little over four hours and got my HR20, an R15 and a D11 all connected. He charged me $52.50 times two for a total of $105 to run two more coax lines to the living room and the bedroom for the dvrs. So much for free installation. He did a pretty good job, although he got very rushed during the activation and bailed at the end. I may have to call customer service to ensure that I've got all of my channels, because some of them are still showing up as not purchased, when I'm supposed to have the full monty with the NFL Sunday Ticket Promo.

All in all not too bad, just very long and wasn't expecting the $105 to run the (required) coax.

Mastec showed up last Thursday at 2:30 (during the 1-5 window) and was there until 7:30. It went pretty smoothly, the only annoying thing was that he was blaring his radio out of the van while he was installing the satellite (until I asked him to turn it down). It only took so long once it was installed because he tried to hook up the HR-20 to the TV with an HDMI cable (that he gave me free of charge), but I guess since my TV's HDMI port doesn't have HDCP it wouldn't work. He tried everything (including calling everyone he knew) before he figured out what happened.

If it's worth anything, he said that he thought they had a pretty good supply of HR-20s in stock.

Since basically all he had to do was change the dish out and replace the old unit with the HR20 he might have been there an hour and a half. So after ordering this unit in August, having three installs cancelled or no showed, numerous calls to CR I finally have my unit.
