I had a long and involved discussion with DirecTv's customer retention folk last night. The long and short of it is I have a HR20-700 install scheduled for between 1 and 5 pm on September 11. The total cost to me is $100.00 plus a re-up on a two-year service contract.
I'll redeploy my HR10-250 to the small TV room.

Do you have any more details on that conversation with retention? I'm in the same market and would like to know how you got them to guarantee you a HR20. I'd like to get one now, but I've been hesitant to call until the nationwide release for fear of the installer bringing an HR10.

Paul01463, Are they going to turn off yourHD DNS feed when you get the MPEG4 HR20? Also did you ask if you can hook up your own box, since I don't really want the installer touching my equipment.

You dont have to have the receiver before the HD DNS feed is turned off according to the Agreements with the affiliates once the HD locals are up and unning they have to stop broadcasting the DNS feeds to those who currently have it,Dish didnt stick to agreements and broke the law now they are paying

Well haven't lost them yet, so just wondering if I can still get Hd DNS with my hr10-250 after I upgrade to the hr20.

Paul , make sure it's a hr20, Because I just called RETENTION and they told me I could upgrade my 10 to hr20 for free but they are not shipping to my area till mid-september.
I am in 01566 zip.....
I had FRANCESCA put it in my file that I would be getting it for free.

So are you saying you're NOT going to have to Turn-in /Return the HR10 to get the HR20 ?
I could live with that..... :))
But, I didn't Buy Either of MY HR10's....
I guess I'll have to keep my Eyes and Ears open in the Next couple of months to see how all this pan's out.
Thanx

As I have stated in other threads, the HD-DNS will remain in MPEG2 for only a few more months (West Coast HD-DNS will be the first to go, then East Coast HD-DNS), so the answer is no, regardless of the legal reasons...

I am sorry for the late reply to the posted questions - I've been traveling.
1. I'm sure the unit being installed will be an HR20-700, not an HR10-250. I explored this issue in great detail with the retention supervisor. The retention supervisor actually brought up the issue of replacing the antenna himself, without my prompting, and stated that DirecTv was installing the new antenna with every HR20-700 they deployed. The antenna change bolsters the impression that the new unit will be an HR20-700.
2. I expect I'll lose my HD-DNS at some point. At this point, I still have both east and west coast feeds for all networks. Providing the HD locals are available before the HD-DNS is terminated, I really do not care.
3. Regarding the conversation with retention: I pointed out that I am a 14-year/ $125 per month customer and that over the 14 years I've provided them over $25,000 in top-line revenues. DirecTv's recent performance with regard to three failed HR10-250s, the obsolescence of my Ultimate TV receiver and the inability to upgrade the HR10-250 to provide a speedier, more-robust, product is placing that revenue stream at risk. Within the next few months, the Series III TiVo, coupled with Charter Cable will be a viable - and user transparent - option that I almost certainly will take. The only way for DirecTv to prevent such a change is for them to provide me with the HR20-700 now so that my family is beyond the learning curve and comfortable with the HR20-700 user interface before the Series III becomes available. – That pretty much sums up the conversation.
4. Yes, I hold on to my HR10-250 units. They are mine.

Take monthly subscriptions, add three HR10-250 units, the various antennas, standard units, the pay-per-views, sports packages, special programming, etc...yes $25k

Paul, I didn't realize charter was going to be using the series III tivo, why didn't you just switch over since you are already using the tivo now? Also when I called they told me it was not being shipped to installers in our area till mid-sept. Maybe I will switch to charter, but there are three issues I have with them. first of all I hate their customer service, 2. I have one more year on my 2 yr D** committment and 3. no NFL NETWORK on charter( they won't pay the money). I Know I can get cable, phone and internet for a year from charter for $100 month, but theres too many negatives, what do you think? My other option is Dish network and they have NFL NETWORK in HD, but I would have to buy out my D** comit.

The Series III TiVo is not yet available anywhere - a far as I know. My point to DirecTv was that I would obtain one as soon as it became available and switch to Charter as my service provider, so DirecTv needs to get in front of the Series III TiVo-Charter curve if they want to retain my business.
What's driving the whole thing, from my perspective, is having to re-program wish lists and seasons passes into yet another replacement HR10-250. Either the HR20-700 or the Series III TiVo with Charter will suffice - whomever gets their solution to me first gets my money.

I became a DirecTV customer in 1994. DirecTV started in 1994. Just be glad the CSR didn't know that! ;)

I know, I was just laughing about how if you told the CSR that you were with them for "14" years, they probably wouldn't even know DirecTV hasn't been around that long!
USSB, I remember them well! I used to come across promotional flyers from them all the time, but not as much any more...
I also intend on telling them how long I have been a customer with them (as well as mentioning how I never received my $100 rebate check from DirecTV last year after purchasing a HR10-250).

I could say I didn't get my check too, but I called and complained....they gave me a $100 credit on my account for the hr10-250 I bought.

Well, I called DirecTV months after I sent it, and talked to a guy about it. He suggested it was probably just late, and that he would make a note on my account, and for me to call back in another month. About a week before I was going to make my call, I ended up getting sick for a few months... and by that time, I just decided I had lost my money, but, if DirecTV wants to me to pay more than shipping for the HR20, I WILL be bringing up the fact that the last time I bought a receiver from them, I didn't receive it for the price I was supposed to get it for...
