will it still update and do everything properly. All my other DVD players I never used Stand By mode, I always just left it on and turned my TV off. I like the fact that when remote is on DTV and I hit TV power off button it shuts my TV and stero off. But it also turns off the HR20.

The HR20 will continue to do everything it is supposed to...

The only way to truelly "turn-off" the HR20... is to pull the plug

This brings up something I've always wondered about. I always leave my Tivo DVR on so it's always writing to the hard drive. Seems like they are meant to run this way, but doesn't that put a lot of extra wear on the hard drive?

The most wear and tear on a hard drive... is it's boot up sequence.
And the most dangerous thing is a sudden power loss, or physical hit to the drive

The additional reading and writing to the drives that occur in the DVRs will shorten the life of the hard drive minimally if at all.

I approached my HR 20 with a little trepidation this afternoon to turn it back on after turning it off last night. When this unit is turned off it really looks off! There are no lights, standby or otherwise. But the unit continues to run (you can hear it - but it's not loud) and it is warm. When I turned it back on today, it came on instantly, no warming up or wait time.....

If you are recording something, the amber record light will light while in Standby mode
