Just placed an order for the HR20-700 from Robert at Value Electronics....and they indicate that they will be shipping either this Friday or next Tuesday!!!(Monday is Labor Day)
I spoke with a "live person", Wendy, and she said that I would be in the first allocation for shipment....so there are still additional receivers available in that first allocation if any of you are interested.

Thanks for the info Tarmack. Between ebay and some of these wait lists it seems that we'll see a bunch of people receiving their HR20s sometime next week. With any luck I should be one of them :D

I sent Robert a pm yesterday and he said he hoped to be shipping no later than the 1st of next week.

Wow, VE is selling the HR20 for $299. That's not bad considering they're supposed to be $399 from d*, if you call up and ask for one w/ out negotiating.

There was a message a week or so ago which said that DTV had dropped the price to $299 (not counting what you may be able to negotiate beyond that). Of course not all the CSRs may have discovered that yet.

Yep, DTV offered it to me at $299 before the LA release (just the price -- not to actually deliver before the LA beta). I think the price will decrease steadily, and relatively quickly.
Plenty of folks reporting $299, and less from DTV. Of course, plenty are still saying $399 too...

I am new to this board and have a few questions.
What are the pros and cons of ordering from VE? If I order from D** is there an installation fee? If I order from VE, will D** still install the equipment? VE told me I would have to get the 5LNB dish from D**. Any advantage to leasing from D**?
Thanks in advance for any help.

Just ordered one from VE for $299, called first and I was told that it will ship this Friday or Tuesday. They told me that once the unit get here I will have to call D* for installation.

Is this because you don't have the new 5 lnb dish? If you have the 5 lnb dish installed, why wouldn't installation of the HR20 be a matter just pulling the cables off the HR10 and reconnecting them to the HR20? Does something else need to be done to install the HR20?
Thanks and sorry for the slightly off topic post.

There is nothing "special" about the installation of the unit itself... If you are just replacing an HR10... it really is just a swap the wires and go.
But if you do need the updated dish... then yes, you will need to call to arrange an installation/purchase of the AT9 if you want MPEG-4 content.

re: installation. Some people just aren't comfortable with installing electronics, not even a VCR. I've actually had friends call me up and ask if I'd help them hook up a VCR, no joke.
Me, I look at it as another opportunity to grow the cable mess. ;)
Anyway, once you get the HR20 from VE you will need to call up DirecTV to activate of course. If you want or need installation then you can arrange that as well.

Thanks guys. I already have the AT9 so I am good to go to just swap out the box. Of course I will have to call D* to activate it, right, as it will have a new card.

Gator,
I am going to do the self install also as I already have the AT9 dish installed....for the past several months.
I came across a .pdf file from the Value Electronics website that may make the self installation go smoother.....here is the link to that.
Whoops.......just got informed that I have not yet made 5 posts to this forum so I can't post a URL.
Gonna fix that now!

That link is basically for installer usage, to troubleshoot issues with the unit not starting up, or not downloading a software release.
Both of those steps: will ERASE your hard drive.
It is not really recommended for the average user.

If purchased fron VE how does that affect D*s new leased equipment requirement? Who owns the unit ? Is it shipped with an access card and will there be any extension to subscription comittment ? Thanks for any insight.

It is leased, and you will have a two year committment.

I feel that way based on a telephone conversation we had years ago. While you may not hold a grudge, I certainly do.

Earl....how many TVs do you have? Just wondering because looking at your sig, you have enough DVRs to support 10+ tuners. That would be at least 5 or 6 TVs. Why do you have so many DVRs and what on earth do you have time to watch that you need 10 tuners to record everything???
Just curious.

My guess would be that the tuners are less important than the storage in Earl's instance. That's why I would have 10+ DVR (though I currently have only 3), but unless some miracle of God intervenes and NDS gets their software right, then mine will all be TIVO-based receivers. ;)
Also, Robert - did you steal KC's wife or kill his dog or something? Or was it creative differences when you left his Sunshine band that is causing KC's hard feelings??? Just kidding, I don't really want or need to know. You're a great sport though and handle yourself with honor and dignity and it shows when you post. ;)

Main Room:
HR20 - Starting to replace the HR10-250 and partially the DSR704
DSR704 - SD Programming Only
HR10-250 - HD Programming Only
The HR10-250 and DSR704 are going to be history when I get my 2nd HR20
Then the main room will be:
HR20 (QTY2)
H20 for mostly sports programming when I have something going on all 4 tuners on the other two (has happened)
Basement:
R10 - Kids shows, Misc Wife Programming, Excerise stuff
Spare Bedrrom
R15 - My Sis-In-laws programming, special events that people want me to record, and that is where I test a lot of the R15 "issues posted"
Master Bedroom
R15 - All our evening and casual programming
Office:
Samsung Fliptop - I usually on use it for Sports (baseball) and background viewing when working
Over the years, it has just been as easy to have DVR's as non-dvr receivers.
I have a D11 receiver that I need a TV for, so that I can use it to test out some of "your" issues and stuff like that.
IN the main room, it is a combination of storage space and conflict resolution.
There are some nights, that I have a program on all 4 of the big 4 set to record at one time.

Same here. Back when 7S went up, I had to replace some of my old receivers to get the locals, so it was just as easy to replace them with DVR's since I was buying them anyway.
Sort of OT but not really, I noticed in the BB listing that the unit had 2 satellite tuners and 1 ATSC tuner. Does this mean it can only record 1 OTA program at any given time? Or does it have the virtual sat/ATSC tuners like the HR10? This may have been answered somewhere else, but there is a ton of info out there and it can be easy to miss it.

The HR20 has 2 physical ATSC tuners. The whole 1 ATSC tuner looks like a typo that keeps getting repeated in other places.

Earl,
Understood.....I am going to be my own installer....so that is why I found it interesting and perhaps helpful....to myself....and for others that are already equipped with the AT9 dish and only need to swap coax and HDMI/opticals.

Somehow I get the impression that only a delay in shipping from Value Electronics would/could make you happy.
I have used Value Electronics for several major purchases over the past 3 years and consider them a very reliable source...in fact with Robert's help I was able to return two defective HR10's(HDMI prob's) for new replacements from DirecTV. When they told me they did not want to old units returned....I became the happy owner of 4 HR10's and two of those became suppliers of HD television to two of my HD TV's that only had component inputs......so they are happy as hell cuz I never told them they were deprived. grin.
It is my opinion that it is darn hard to beat the price and service of Value Electronics.....and I am in no way a "fan boy" of anything.

You want to know why their prices are so cheap??? Check your credit card bill in 3-5 months after your purchase for some Western Union charges. That's all I'm saying.
