Backordered just means that they can't sell it for another 2 weeks when it's officially released to all retailers. ;)

If it is "ready" to go national, then why isn't it on the DirecTv site? Why haven't the people that signed up on wait list been emailed? Why is it I can order from Bestbuy or Value Electronics and NOT DirecTv?

Why are the people that spent up to $1000 on the 10-250 and spend $100/month and buy sports packages NOT able to buy this thing?

Why are random people outside the LA area able to keep calling and by chance able to order one of these things and everyone has to wait?

What the hell is wrong with DirecTv? Why do they treat their "valued" customers this way.

Until the unit is available by everyone in the country directly from DirecTv then the unit isn't released and it isn't "ready" to go national.

Did I say "ready to go" nationwide?
Or
Did I say "has gone" nationwide?

The fact that one major retailer and mulitple online retailers are now accepting orders tells me that it is "ready to go" nationwide.

Ok. Please tell me or speculate why DirecTv is not accepting orders and others are? Even if it is going to be early next week or even two weeks, they could start processing orders like other retailers are doing. God know it may be until October before they actually show up for an install but at least they could take the orders like other retailers are.

Maybe I am in the wrong here, but what other major satellite or cable company behaves like this?

Actually... Most of them. For the last two Dish releases, IIRC they where available from retailers before showing on on Dishnework.com

Same for Comcast, they usually don't even have some of the latest cable-modems and other items there....

The retailer's PRIMARY buisness is selling merchandise.
Some have people that 24/7 update their retail systems and websites, the moment they have numbers and figures and stuff for sale on system.
And most of them are setup to handle "Pre-Orders" for merchandise that is not ready for shipping.... I am sure DirecTV doesnt run on a retail system setup, so their functionality maybe very different when it comes to the "sale" of systems.
Historically... DirecTV.com has always been behind in getting "items" for sale on their website.

Heck... have the major Movie Studios that sell DVD's are usually the last to have their own movies and stuff listed on their sites for sale.

When has DirecTV ever accepted pre-orders? They will have it on their site the day it's released. Sept 18th has been a date knocked around a bit. If that is the official release date then that is when DirecTV will have it available.

DirecTV isn't in the hardware selling business for the most part. The retailers do 90% of that for them.

Yes, I am aware of that, and you can't really blame Best Buy that much since even DirecTV has a few things wrong (or so it seems) in the Owner's Manual.

Not a problem. Please remember that although we are working closely with DirecTV regarding the HR20 and the waitlist, the ball is in their court to deliver. Please try not to shoot the messenger. :)

You should all know that many things have been happening behind the scenes to make this possible and we hope in the end, everyone will be happy. :)

Paperboy,

If you THINK one of your HR10s is dying, it might just need a new drive. Although not as easy to replace as the new HR20, it is definately doable and not that difficult. It would be a shame to let a good HD DVR go to waste....

Just called D* again (you think they would just give me this thing already, to shut me up :D )

Anyways, she said Best Buy is their #1 retailer and will get it first. Since my account was noted that I am to receive one at no charge, that if I were able to get it from Best Buy sooner to go ahead and buy it and they will credit my account. Is this message that's coming any different than the message I got last night from D* telling me that " is right around the corner. I guess my question is if I haven't signed up here, am I not getting the message from D* , but only via my talking with CSR who put me on their email list or will I just be getting the message "later" because the people who signed on here are getting "special treatment?:D

Does this have anything to do with BestBuy's current promotion on HDTV sets?
At my local BestBuy, the TV are normall placed in the back of the store. When
I was there yesterday, they had two dozen plasma HDTVs lined up at the
entrance of the store.(forming a giant row of HDTVs) There were also several
Sony, Pioneer, and Toshiba factory reps on hand. They also handed out freebies
such as keychains and mugs.(with each manufacturer's logos)

In addition, the receipt cop(the guy who stands at the exit checking your
receipts) asked EVERYBODY leaving the store if they had any HDTV-related
questions!

So the drill is to order the HR20 through the Best Buy website (for $399) and then call D* once you receive the DVR to schedule an installation, assuming you need a new dish and multiswitch?

I'm trying to figure the logic of paying $400 for something that I have to give back to D* at some point. Will the money I pay now be a one time charge type of thing that guarantees that I'll receive future upgrades to newer models at no charge? That is a lot of money to pay up front. Sorry, but ST isn't worth this much to keep me as a customer. I hope D* has a better deal to offer those of us who paid $700+ for HD Tivos.

She did offer to replace my SAT-HD100 with an H20 (and new dish) for an amazing low price of only $99, though. :nono2:
Try again. I just called retention a few hours ago and got the HR20 for just $19.95 handling fee and they didn't want my H20 or HR10.:) I pointed out I have been a customer for awhile and have invested a lot of money in D* HD equipment. So she gave me a great deal I couldn't refuse.:D Install is set for 9/9. I am in San Rafael.

I haven't gotten the e-mail yet but I don't need it now especially if it is just a Best Buy ad.

I'm sure that if you call DirecTV before you place your order through BestBuy....they will offer you some kind of credit if you buy the HR20 through a retail outlet. THey told me they would give me a $150 instant credit and $20 my bill for 6 months. That means your only pay $130. Not free....but better than $400.

Reading through 3 pages of responses to this thread...it seems if you are from California DirecTV is offering a deal. Outside of the state they'll refer you to Best Buy.

The national roll-out is sometime between 9/13 and 9/18, but some select dealers will begin shipping the HR20 sooner.

-Robert

Sorry guys, at 4:29 PM ESt today DIRECTV sent a memo to its distributors stopping all shipments. The new national release date is now 9/13/06.

Today our FL fullfillment warehouse had already packed 30 of our orders and they were pulled back at the last moment before UPS came for their daily p/u, the balance of our large allocation has already been scheduled for delivery tomorrow morning at 10:30 AM. As of this moment they can not be shipped either.

I'm not sure if we will be able to ship sooner, but by Tuesday, 9/5/06, all 12 of our fullfillment branches will be stocked and ready to ship.

Any and all charges that were made were fully refunded immediately at 4:30 PM EST today. So if you see a charge the credit will also be posted hopefully on the next line item of your credit card statement, but certainly on the same statement.

Sorry about this false alarm, everything was going ahead of schedule till the last moment of the UPS pick-up.

If we are not permitted to ship earlier than 9/13 at least our nationwide 12 warehouse simultaneous distribution will ensure the fastest possible in-hand date to all of our customers.

I assume one of the reasons for this small delay is to give engineering time to enable more features for us to download upon activation.

-Robert

So the DBS forum order list which members signed up for received a email from DIRECTV promoting BB's $399.99 lease offer?

Actions speak louder than words Robert. The writing's on the wall.....plain as day. Can't you see it? It's time you finally realized where you really stand with DirecTV and stop giving shipment dates than you can't keep.

Hello All...

Not sure where some of you thought pricing was a part of any of this. :)

Let me see if I can try to help here for I worked with DTV on this. The list was for being one of the first to be able to order it "when it was available" as was stated. Until you received that e-mail, the product was not officially released for sale by DirecTV.

The e-mail was considered a VIP list for it was to be sent by DirecTV right at the time when you could order the item. (As some others noticed, Best Buy now show it as Available 2 to 3 days and not as back ordered as it read this morning.) As such, if you did choose to order, you would then be able to be one of the first to receive the unit for they seem to have stock. Thus the "preferential" treatment as being able to get a special notice and order. (They are first come first served.) It was suppose to be a special Pre-Order, but the date got moved up as you can see. (as some were reporting the 18th)

Thus the e-mail was the call to action for being on list that went out like this. (I think current DTV customers who called in and asked to be on a list also received something like this.) Thus you should be able to act before the general public and thus be one of the first to get the unit.

We of course have no control over pricing or delivery times. You may choose to order or not, 100% your call and we have no stake in the matter. But the notice was sent to the members on the list and it was only sent when you could officially order the HR20 for the initial roll out.

If you care to order elsewhere, go for it! If the place you order it from does not have the unit to ship or does not arrive in stock when they might have said, you will just have to wait or cancel the order. This holds true for any dealer, even Best Buy. If you care to save $100 because you can wait...GREAT!

All in all, that is it in a nut shell.

(Yes, someone seems to have goofed on DTV's end with the link. It should have gone right to the HR20 page.)

I am sorry...forgot to mention...Chris had said "This will give you preferencial treatment when you order." This was supose to take place, but based on legal thoughts between parties, it was something that did not come to pass. Sorry Chris, I did not contact you about it when I found out.

Take care...Safe Weekend.

If you choose "Estimate arrival time.", even if you pick Next Day Delivery, it gives you an Est. Arrival Date of 9/12-9/13/2006 :(

I placed my order from Best Buy last night. I talked with a CSR from D* and I got all the install for free, including 5 lnb dish, multiswitch, free HD chan. for 4 months, $10 dollars off my program package for 4 months, plus she is crediting me $100 off the DVR price from Bestbuy since the first CSR I talked to last week told me that I would get it for $299.00. Mine is being delivered on 9/11/06 and installed on the 9/13/2006

I called Direct TV and they know nothing about the unit being available in my area. I called them three different times and got a different person each time. They gave the same story that it is not out yet in my area and they don't know when it will be out.

I am also a bit upset that my signing up for the advance notice list caused me to get an email that asks me to pay full price at BestBuy. I guess its like with most electronics; if you are patient you can get a better price. If you have to be the first kid on the block to get it you will have to pay for it. I was the first kid on the block for the HR10 but not this time. I am going to wait for the better price.

I also just noticed that the model # on the bestbuy.com website is:

Model: HR20-250

shouldn't it be 700 (not 250) ?

Just want to be sure I'm buying the right thing...

The HR20-250 is the one with one ATSC Tuner, the HR20-700 has two.

No. There is no such thing as an "HR20-250". It's a typo. So is the info about "one ATSC Tuner". The HR20-700 is the only version and it has two ATSC Tuners, although neither is active yet (hopefully coming in October).

Why did they call it the "HR20-700" and not the "HR20-300" to indicate the size of the hard drive being 300 gigs? (or is it only 250)

For the HR10-250, the suffix designated the HD capicity.

Now DIRECTV uses the suffix to indicate the hardware manufacture's code, -700 is Pace.

Actually, I expect we wil see the dual OTA ATSC tuners activated by the end of this month if not sooner.

I know the email notification was done with the best of intentions, but my local Best Buy had the unit in stock, at the store itself when I stopped by Friday after work. I did not receive the email from DirecTV until later that night so I am not sure what the benefit to the email was. Needless to say, I did not purchase it for $400 and will pursue other lower cost options. Again, I appreciate the intent of the early notification.

Best buy said that if I go thru them to purchase the HR20, I only have to commit for 12 months instead of 24. Is that true? I think the Best Buy rep was making it up.

Whenever any subscriber adds any advanced product (SD DVD, HD STB or HD DVR) you must agree to a new 2-yr. programming commitment.

Your programming commitment can be terminated early without any penalty if you return your leased equipment upon termination.

That's an incredibly low price for an HD DVR that's barely available yet. Are you sure it's not an R15 DVR, or the older HR10-250 HD DVR?

Should I take this that I am far down the list or that DTV will just not let them ship it yet. Even after I ordered it on Friday, it said the estimated delivery was 9/11 thru 9/12. Should I cancel!

Here's my take for what its worth. My opinion only.

It seems as though DirecTV and BestBuy got in bed with one another and cooked up this "exclusive" deal for the HR20. In order to do so they blocked all other dealers from shipping this product during this time. It now seems based on the email you received that they cannot meet the demand of this "agreement" and will end-up shipping even after the rest of the dealers now. Kind of defeats the purpose of the "exclusive" doesn't it?

Anyway, my advice would be to either a) cancel from bestbuy and order someplace else that actually have the boxes and are just waiting until the 9/13 to ship. or b) keep the order open and see if they ship sooner then the say the can. If they cannot then you can always cancel the order later and order from some place else. But of course you run the risk as the longer you wait the more of a possibility that even these other dealers will have limited stock available.

Nice to hear, but still doesnt put it in my grubby hands today. :)

Just curious, Lock - how is it that your account is noted that you will get one at no charge? I have heard of others getting free stuff from D* in the past but not sure how it all happens.

I have been a customer for 9 years, I've got three TV's hooked up and I'm a Total Choice Plus subscriber (with HBO, Starz and Sports packages added.) I pay over $100 per month.

Do I qualify for a new HD receiver? I would obviously subscribe to the HD package, as well.

patsfan,

I called retention directly and they said they couldn't ship it to me as our market does not have HD Locals yet (in Providence DMA) but that she would put a note on my account indicating that when it was I would receive it for 19.95 (shipping only). She took a minute, typed away and then read it back to me. I asked her for a confirmation number but she said they did not have one and offered her Badge ID and first name (which I wrote down). She said to also note the date and time of the call.

We'll see what happens when I call for the install but armed with the date/time/CSR name/Badge ID I'm confident it will be okay.

It took a about 40 minutes of back and forth and she had to check with a supervisor and it took me a while to convince her that it was even available out side of LA. She actually tried to enter the order for me but the system only provided her the H10 as an option (that is when she offered to note my account). I never started the conversation asking for anything for free but eventually that is what I alluded too. When I said I could get it at BB for $399 she said if I bought it there she could give me $150 in credit. I said that was still to rich for me and that is when she went to talk to the supervisor.

HTH

One last thing I would suggest is to call back D* , speak to another CSR and get them to confirm the "note" is on the account. Give them name and date of prev conversation and have the CSR verify the documented conversation.

Picked up mine last night at the bestbuy in Trumbull CT. They had about 5 of them on the shelf, went home hooked it up called Dtv to get it activated. I got a 100$ credit, but whatever, I can watch the Patriots in HD this weekend. I like it, but the mpeg 4locals in CT (all 2 of them CBS NBC) are NOT as good quality as OTA, but once the OTA is active I will be happy.
Just need to get used to the interface. The 6 second rewind seems inconsistent sometimes it seems like it went back a full minute, but I’m sure its just different from the Tivo I have used for about 8 years, ill keep at it. I will have to reread the rewview thread to get an idea of how the buttons really work.

So far so good, did have the dolby digital cutting out, but didn’t want to miss the game last night by doing the software download. I checked this morn it did over night so hopefully it works out.

My wife just bought me the HR10-250 for me from Best Buy. Should I return this unit and get the HR20-700 instead?

What's the difference between the two units? I got the HR10-250 because of Directv HD Sat receiver, DVR, and Tivo-like capabilities. Will the HR20-700 do all this and have extra capacity as well as MPEG-4 decoding capability?

I'm getting a bit confused. I'm afraid. Thanks.

Keep the HR10-250!! From all I have read in the last few weeks, it seems that people with an existing HR10-250 have been getting upgraded to the HR20-700 for little or no cost and being allowed to keep the old machine. You may have to wait a while for DTV to give you an upgrade, and you may have to moan about it for a while, but it seems like the way to go. Less than 2 months ago, I got a 10-250 for myself but returned it when I realized it couldn't record the locals in HD which they just activated for Orlando. If I had kept that machine instead of returning it, I could have upgraded it.

Of course, if you activate a leased HD DVR, you lock in a two year committment. That may decrease your leverage when you moan about not getting your HD locals and needing the HR20-700 upgrade. But it isn't like the digital picture from a DTV receiver is terrible. And with an OTA, you might be able to record local HD anyway.
