View Full Version : The various ways of resetting the R15?

I tried the famous 'reset' I hear so much about.
I powered down... and pressed the red button... and when things came back.. it seemed a good deal faster!... until... I noticed there was only around ONE day of guide information.. no wonder.
SO.. what are the various ways of resetting?
Was the way I did it good? (The 'once a week' reset some suggest doing)..
Is there a difference when you reset when it is on? How about unplugging etc?
Seems to be a LOT more ways to reset than DISH.. even a way to reformatt I gather??
Pressing the reset button has the same effect as unplugging it. It makes no difference if it's on or "off" (standby). The guide takes some time to repopulate, which is the major drawback of regular resets.
Holding the record button and down arrow on the front of the receiver after resetting it will wipe the drive.

Tx! That's it? Just two reset methods?
I notice my VOD shows are just fine.. but seems the to do list is shorter!... ? Like was 65 and now is 38.. wonder if that will go up again when the guide is back?
1- Will ANY programs I had previously set to record be lost?
2- How long does it take to repopulate the guide? Hours? Days?

OMG.. now my TDL is down to 31 from 38 just a half an hour ago!... 65 before the reset... I spent a lot of time searching for shows to build it up to those 65... are these going to come back when the guide does??? Or do I have to do a total research of my 'recent history' to once again set next weeks stuff?
That's a HUGE reason NOT to reset if true! :(

DOWN TO 15 now! Oh well.. perhaps I have to redo all my searches in the morning.. or perhaps they will all be back when they guide comes??? REALLY strange... going down 1 show per minute or so.

They will come back as the guide rebuilds.
Can take up to 48 hours.

TX.. I will HAVE to remember to do any reset 2 days BEFORE I do my major searching and setup for the follow 10 days or so of programming. Eh?
EDIT: Sure enough! It's already gone back up by a few TDL items... :)
Pressing the reset button has the same effect as unplugging it.
DirecTv recommends using the red reset button first, if that doesn work pull the plug to reset and wait 30 seconds. This seems to be a more complete reset.

I think there are really 4 reset methods. The red button, pull the plug and two reset options in the menu. One does a reset and wipes your TDL list, the other resets and wipes everythings.
After a reset, the TDL appears stange for a few hours until it builds again. I have seen the entire TDL have the same date and time for all programs, go up and down in the number of shows, etc... It fixes itself after a while, dont drive yourself crazy watching it all the time.

Also the guide data should fully repopulate within 12 hours or so. You can safely reset and have 24 Hours of guide as soon as the receiver comes back up. The reset shouldn't hurt any of your recordings or SL's but as you said you won't be able to do many searches or setup future recordings that are not already scheduled until you have enough guide data. On a side not the guide data doesn't really seem to fill in in any certain way that I can tell. It seems to fill in odd blocks here and there on different days.

Actually, doing a lot of searches is one of the activities that appears to cause problems with the R15. You want to do all of your searches and recording requests, wait a half day or so, then do the reset.

Not only different days, but hours as well. I've seen some channels be populated up to a certain hour, then a "hole" or two, then several more hours "filled in".

The way to go is, hit reset one night before you go to bed. Put it in standyby, and hit the red button. Some say the guide repopulates faster in standby. Might have something to do with "housekeeping" mode. Anyway, it should have repopulated most of it by the time you turn it on again.

That's seemd to have gotten much better over the last couple updates (at least for me). That, and manipuating your SL list.
