Seems like Micro$oft has made the "wise" decision to not allow the startup sound to be disabled or changed in Vista.
I usually disable startup sound on the laptop so it does blare out unexpectedly on a plane when I power on.
I guess the "experience" is more important than trying to be courteous to people around you!

Since MS has virtually 100% of the OS market, why do we need to be reminded
every time we boot who's in charge? I once had a female boss like that.
Can you imagine -- all cell phones with the same "corporate identity" ringtone?

You mean like the Nextel Direct Connect Chirp...
VISTA is constantly 'In your face'. Appears that it will also be 'In your ears'!
I don't know how you all think about it but this is my take on operating systems:
1) An operating system should confine it's role to allocating and managing system resources as required by my running applications. It should not be my principle application.
3) It should consume no more than 15% of my system resources.
4) The operating system should service me and not be constantly screaming for my attention.
It boils down to this. Operating systems are basically baggage. I want to use my computer to run applications, not the operating system. Old fashioned thinking?
