I found this today:
http://www.beachaudio.com/product_info.php?products_id=85522
They say they have 305 of them in stock as of 09/01/2006 12:52 PM and they offer $5 ground shipping.
I purchased 2 Directv Dtva3brace Mono-pole Braces for my AT9 a few weeks ago from these guys and their shipping was very fast for basic ground to my zipcode.
Has anyone purchase D* receivers from these guys before?

NICE find! Just ordered one, wow those 305 are dropping fast!
Does this include the AT9 dish too??
I wonder how this compares to the "special DBS" discount that hasn't been emailed yet (soon?!?)

It looks like it doesn't include the dish and is the receiver only, but I'm sure you can get the AT9 from D* from what I have read in other posts.

Bah, the AT9 dish is selling on Ebay for $30, no big deal. I wish I could just use my OTA antenna, don't really need the new dish, just want a DVR
When are they supposed to turn on the OTA?
I emailed the store to ask them when the ship date is, they say 3-5 days when I put in my Zip (San Diego) but BestBuy isn't shipping until mid-month.

There was no "special DBS discount", it was an email from D* telling us we could buy an HR20 from Best Buy for $399.

It seems strange that this place and the places selling on eBay all list the box as having only 1 ATSC tuner, when D* says it has 2. That seems like a big error. Earl has posted his picture showing the two tuners inside the box.

Why does everyone want to get one of these units so quickly (with all of the complaints on this site regarding digital audio drop outs, unit freezing, inaccurate playback during recordings, etc). What reason is there to be an early adopter on this thing when the HR10-250 works so well (albeit slow) for now? Also, why are people willing to spend nearly $300 now when they can get it later for a lot less if not free?
Am I missing something here?

I have had bad drop outs on OTA (i.e. network) channels on my HR10 since I got it 18 months ago. I have tried 4 antennas (using a CM4228), and have tweeked the position of the antenna countless times. Sitting down to watch LOST, only to find it recorded only 30 minutes of choppy unwatchable junk gets old.
So I plan on running the HR20 and HR10 in parallel, with the HR20 recording the MPEG4 HD locals, and the HR10 using OTA. I am also looking forward to better PQ. My current H20 is clearly better than the HR10 and I expect the same from the HR20.

I'm glad I saw this post, that is a way better deal then BB. I couldn't resist and I ordred one. Now I need to convince D* to upgrade my dish for free :).
And just as a random question, does anyone know if your harmony remote will control the HR20?

...when the HR10-250 works so well (albeit slow) for now? ...

I can't answer for everyone, but I can answer for me. I have personally never liked the HR10. I moved to it from a UTV and I found it slow and clunky.
Furthermore, I live in the city and I can't pickup all of my channels at once with that OTA receiver because all of the signals come from different directions. I have to move my antenna based on what I want to watch. It is soooo what I don't want for a TV experience. I want the MPEG-4 locals and I won't watch them live on a H20.

Please Wait, this make take a few moments
That is the only thing my Tivo H10 was ever good at. Slow, very slow UI really hurt that reciever. I will take my new HR20 with some bugs over my old Tivo unit any day of the week :)

OK let me get this straight for the last 6 months everyones been on D*where's the mpeg-4 DVR there falling behind in the HD scene etc, etc.
Now that is finally out your saying whats the big hurry let them work the bugs out wait for the price to drop wait for them to give it away.
There just not going to please everyone and thats why there are choices and I choose to buy one now as I do not get my locals OTA.
Remember what you paid for your first VCR, your first DVD how about your first, second and third computer oh did Dell give you the last one for free because of new technology dont think so.

i get all the locals OTA, but i am still getting it because i want to have it by the time ota is enabled. I dont have the h10, i was always holding out for this one- which is the apparent future if you plan to stay with D*. the price was right for the wife, so i did not think twice. Since i cant currently record HD OTA with equipment i have, i am not missing anything.

I agree! All I hear about is problems with the H-20, so what makes this unit any better? Plus no OTA enabled yet! I'm not getting rid of my OTA anyway, besides locals, what's the big deal at this point?

Where has D* said it has 2 ATSC tuners?
Site shows 290 left, called D* and they will install the dish for free, set appointment for Friday as long as the unit arrives as promised. Spent 3 hours last night trying to get it for free, but I had gotten the HR10-250 for free two years ago. Still a good deal for $274 with tax and shipping. Just hope it is for real….

Why do I want it?
Because I have no DVR at all.
Because it gets MPEG4 here in San Diego that is live.
Because it is made by PACE (best STB out of all I tried renting from TWC)
Native resolution, I can't stand watching 480i poorly scaled to 1080i, SD looks horrible plus you can't use my TV's smart stretch at 1080i.
I don't have any surround sound so the audio glitch doesn't effect me, the only downside for me is the lack of OTA :nono2:
Cost is not really an issue, $250 is a fair price in my opinion, now if it was $1000 I would say no freaking way, that is just a waste of money.

I decided to bite the bullet and get one just to see what it's all about. I won't be giving up my HR10-250's anytime soon, however. The UI may be slow but I've been living with three of them for so long now that I hardly notice anymore. I certainly don't see it as a legitimate reason to drop the HR10 in favor of the HR20. The HR10 (or any DTV DVR) wasn't meant for channel surfing so if that's your bag, stick with a standard receiver.
I've never been a fan of UTV's for several reasons. I used to have three of them so my opinion is based on extensive firsthand experience with them. I'm not sure how a discussion of UTV's fits this thread but since it ws mentioned I believe that opens the door for my 2 cents on the subject.
1. Developed and tanked by Microsoft. That alone is enough reason to stay clear of them.
2. Drive upgrades are easy but extremely limited. The sky's the limit for an HDTivo.
3. Absolutely no way to upgrade them with special features like you can with a Tivo.
4. The monthly UTV fee is about double the fee for a Tivo-based DTV DVR and also the new DTV DVRs.
5. The UTV user interface was much easier to use than a Tivo. Think of it as a DVR for dummies. Not a bash as I rather preferred the UI of a UTV over most DVRs I've used.
I only purchased the HR20 to test the waters. I won't see any benefit from using it for a couple of years. I already get more HD locals with the HR10-250 than I'll ever get in mpeg4 (currently 14 OTA vs. 4 from DTV). The local RSN in mpeg4 may be something I'd watch on occasion but it certainly wasn't the driving point to own the HR20.
Furthermore, I live in the city and I can't pickup all of my channels at once with that OTA receiver because all of the signals come from different directions. I have to move my antenna based on what I want to watch.
While this may not sound like an attractive solution for you I have found it to work for me. I'm in a similar situation where I can get locals from both Baltimore and DC but the towers are in opposite directions. I just put up two UHF antenns pointed in each direction and then combined the outputs of both antennas into a single cable using a standard UHF/VHF splitter/combiner. Since the antennas are pointed away from each other there is no danger of picking up multipath interference from channels being picked up by both antennas.

My plasma TVs work with that setup. The HR10 can't tune with it. The signal meter will jump between 1% and 95% every other second. What's worse, if a heavy truck rumbles by, which I can't feel, I lose signal on my one constant station.
As to slowness on the HR10, the problem isn't changing channels. It's the navigation in general. There is no excuse for the guide to take 3-5 seconds to scroll down when you are tuned to a HD channel.
Just ordered 1 from Beach I have AT9 dish I called D* to make it short I ended up with coupon for$150. & $10. off per month for 1 year. Had to bitch a little.

So since you bought this from BeachAudio, do you own the unit or is it still leased?? I heard the HR20s were all going to be leased.

Okay - fair enough - thanks for answering my questions and I wasn't trying to disuade anyone from buying the unit. I was merely trying to guage why people are paying big money for it, in it's current condition.
As a matter of fact, you all have pursuaded me into trying it. MPEG-4 HD locals will be coming to Maine from DirecTV this Fall or so I'm told. We don't really get OTA HD to speak of where I live, very easily. So, I called DirecTV retention today and my HR20-700 will be installed on 9/18/2006 and I get to keep my HR10-250 as well. The installer will just need to run one more RG-6 line and I'll be a four tuner household. Because I'm not sure I trust the NDS software in its current state, I'll be mirror all programming that I request to record in HD on the HR20 to also record in HD when possible or SD when not possible on the HR10. That way, I will miss hopefully no recordings.
Thanks again for the answers to my question.

Just ordered mine from Beach. It said 2-3 business day shipping to my zip code in Minnesota.
I called D* retention and she had to look at my account and situation and she said it is different what they can offer a person depending on their situation. I currently have two HR10s and she said she could give me $150 off when I activate the HR20 since I wanted to buy it at an outside retailer. I wasn't able to get it from D* yet but was supposed to be able to get it in a few weeks if supplies are there. I didn't want to wait cause the Vikings will soon be playing and I need the HD locals to get the games in HD. So for $250 plus $150 off it is not a bad deal. While I was on the phone I also set up an install date of Sept 16th Which will be free and they will give me a free AT9 dish. Hope the receiver gets here on time or I will have to delay the install. Can't wait. I have been waiting many years to get my local NFL team in HD!

Because DirecTV won't allow them. They are giving Bestbuy a 10 day "exclusive" so no other dealers are allowed to ship before the 9/13. Time will tell if BeachAudio follow DirecTV's rules but its in their best interest play nice with D*.

Listen, I'm not going to argue with you as you already know it all apparently. But the price on the HR20 has been reduced by DirecTV and is currently being offered for $299+shipping (no tax) so the $50 delta stands. (except at best buy that is). And why demand sources for a Best Buy Only exclusive if you are just going to call it a lie? I'd ask you to cite your sources on this "lie conspiracy" but I know you do not have any.

Where in your sources does it say "10-day Best Buy" exclusive? Not even in Robert's post does it mention it, he mentions it might be due to software still being developed.
How can you say there is an "exclusive" when no one has even received it from Best Buy, but others sure have it installed already - an "exclusive" means it is ONLY (your bolding) at Best Buy - not true, aka a LIE.
Clearly, your mention of Best Buy's "exclusive" must take in to account their price. If you are saying it's 10 days and $50 that's incorrect since others have it for $299 but they have to wait to ship it according to your "exclusive" theory.
So it's either 10 days and $150 or 0 days and $50.

I live in NY, 20 minutes from Roberts store. I bought a R-15 from robert a few months ago and picked it up in the store. Great Guy and his whole staff were very professional. I will buy All my Directv products from robert, EXCEPT this time...
Since I am in NY I have to pay 8.75 Sales tax on top of the $299 price. It brings my price to about $325.00 so the Beach Audio HR20-700 is about $75 cheaper for me. And I cant pick it up at roberts store, it has to be shipped from the warehouse, so it should take the same time shipping for both places
Sorry Robert but If the price stays at $299 I have to go with Beach Audio. I would love to do business with you again but $75 LESS for a receiver I am LEASING, Its a NO BRAINER.

Actually the lease plan is very good for authorized dealers for the following two reasons.
1. We are off the hook for the charge-back buy-down money.
2. Authorized dealers can compete by exclusively offering the ownership of the equipment we offer. Only by buying directly from an authorized dealer does the customer have the option to activate the HD DVR as his owned unit.

1. You never should have been on the hook for the majority of chargebacks in the first place. My local dealer, now E* only, used to get installs from D*, but then D* would charge him back if they didn't stay on for a year and it was an install D* sent him. Its not like he was going out and selling bogus systems to make the commission.
2. On the Leased vs. Owned. You have repeatedly stated the equipment you sell is owned. Isn't it supposed to be at a much higher price to be considered owned? For example, the HR10 was $399 to lease, but if you wanted to own it, D* would charge you $799 (or something like that.)
Robert, I ordered the hr20 from you the other day, is the unit considered leased or owned? Thanks

When you activate the HR20 you have the choice to tell the CSR you want it to be set up on your account as an owned or leased unit.
If you select owned you will not be eligible for the free dish upgrade or free lifetime advanced replacement coverage.
The lease adds nothing to your monthly bill so leasing is truly to your benefit, but you do have the choice.

They stated they are shipping today. I quickly jumped on the Best Buy BS email, and ordered one for 399. After I submitted payment, got an email stating HR20 was on backorder. Called BB to cancel, was then told that order should ship out on Tuesday. (TODAY). Today, I check my status on BB website, and now says delivery expected for 9/13 to 9/14. That is NOT good. I am expected to pay an extra $175 and get it AFTER every one else...No thank you. I promptly returned the HR 20 that I "bought" at BB. Good move. Anyone else still believe in Best Buy's "exclusive"?
They stated they are shipping today. I quickly jumped on the Best Buy BS email, and ordered one for 399. After I submitted payment, got an email stating HR20 was on backorder. Called BB to cancel, was then told that order should ship out on Tuesday. (TODAY). Today, I check my status on BB website, and now says delivery expected for 9/13 to 9/14. That is NOT good. I am expected to pay an extra $175 and get it AFTER every one else...No thank you. I promptly returned the HR 20 that I "bought" at BB. I hope Beach Audio comes through on shipping today, but if they don't, and I get it next week, I still saved $175! What a friggin scam that email was!!! I feel used by D* & BB.

I also pulled the trigger on Beach Audio. (Ordered early am saturday). So I'm hopeful also, but I have a little time to wait in case it doesn't go out asap. Quickest installation date I could get from DirectTV for the dish is 9/20.

Beach Audio is not shipping until the 13th. How much you want to bet that Robert from VE either (A) called Beach Audio to give them a friendly heads up that they probably shouldn't start shipping until the 13th, or (B) called DirecTV distribution and ratted out Beach Audio? LOL
Oh well, now I'll just wait for BB or even until I can order directly from D*.

I will be P!ssed if this is the case and not stated earlier by BeachAudio. Well even if it is true, it is still cheaper than Robert could sell, so I am still up in that regard:) If it is the case, I hope everyone orders from Beachaudio anyway just in spite, I have held grudges for less haha

Not true in any way whatsoever.
All authorized independent dealers buy through one of two authorized distributors. It's the distributors that have orders form DIRECTV not to ship any product. That's how I know no dealer, with the possible exception of BB will be shipping HR20's before 9/13.

Apperantly, my above post was misinterperetted, so I feel I should clarify.
The above post was not meant as an insult to Robert. Any wise businessman in Robert's situation would probably do one of the options I stated above. Why? Because he has a business to run and if Beach Audio was shipping units.....he would have lost a lot of business. If I were Robert, I would have called Beach Audio and informed them of the D* restrictions. I would have done that for 2 reasons....1) as a courtesy to my fellow businessmen, 2) to keep as much of the sales to myself as I could. If I called Beach Audio and they said "screw you....we are shipping", then I would probably call someone in DirecTV distribution to inform them. Again.....to try and preserve as many of my pre-orders and sales as I could.
So, while I do have differences with Robert....my previous post was not meant to be an insult in any way. I was just saying what I think a smart businessman would have done (did do?). My apologies to Robert for any misconceptions.

However, for the record I want everyone to understand how I know no dealer will be shipping before 9/13. No authorized distributor will be shipping any HR20's before 9/13. DIRECTV has put out a very clear directive to the two distributors not to ship any HR20's till 9/13 to give BB a chance to get their orders out before even DIRECTV ships any.
I have requested special permission to ship my orders on 9/12 so my customers will receive them on 9/13. We’re stocked in all 12 warehouses across the US waiting for DIRECTV’s go ahead.

Good move. Anyone else still believe in Best Buy's "exclusive"?
Beach Audio is not shipping until the 13th. .
I spoke to three different reps yesterday. The first one admitted that she didn't know too much about the HR20's availability so she transferred me to their installation department. That rep transferred me to another person who gave me (what seems to be) good information.
First he said that Best Buy has the exclusive rights to lease the HR20 for the first 10 days, beginning 9/1. Value Electronics and Beach Audio can sell the HR20, but cannot ship them during this 10 day period. Only Best Buy can.If I got an HR20 through Best Buy, he said the best offer he can make is the free install of the new Dish & multi-switch. Right now the only HD receivers D* can lease out is the H20 and the HR10.
He said that people who leased the HR10 last year will get the HR20 for the price you were quoted. You will have to give up the HR10. Since I bought my HR10 outright two years ago, and if I were to wait for D* to start leasing the HR20 (after 9/11, when the 10 day Best Buy exclusive is over), the best deal I can get (with all credits taken into account) is $130, plus shipping. I get to keep my HR10.
He also said that I might be able to get a better deal when D* starts leasing the HR20, but he couldn't say how much better.
So, I'll be waiting for D* to start leasing them. I'm not going to drop $440 at Best Buy just to be the first one on my street to get one.

D* will install for free and give you a free AT9 dish. Call and talk to the installation department to set up a date. In some cases when they "look at your situation" they may give you $150 credit when you activate the receiver.

I picked mine up yesterday 9/7 at BB here in suburban Chicago and had it activated last night..a process that took an hour or so.
By the way, they will price match a website, as long as that website has a bricks-and-mortar store nearby.

Yes, I'm sure people that ordered from BestBuy.com have started receiving their HR20s. I see that you're in Jersey. Many BB stores have them available (they may not be on display yet). You can goto their website and do the instore pickup option.

Yup, I had the same situation, but when I noticed the in-store availability, I cancelled my .com order (I had been notified that it was b/o'd), and did an in-store pickup.
The store I went to (Naperville, IL) had an HR20 box on display just as you walked in the store, so it is being promoted heavily, in store at least.

Yeah, I got the one that I had canceled the day before it shipped. (see post above) They sent it anyway and I got it yesterday.
Here's the weird part: When I opened the plastic bag that they shipped it in, the seal on the box was broken. The owner's manual was stained on the front and some of the pages were dirty and wrinkled. You guys think I got one of the beta testers? I ain't gonna pay 400+ and get a used piece. (unless its a good hooker, of course :D ) This whole experience gets funnier by the day.... Needless to say, I am not gonna activate it and will be taking it back to BB today.

Not true in any way whatsoever.
All authorized independent dealers buy through one of two authorized distributors. It's the distributors that have orders form DIRECTV not to ship any product. That's how I know no dealer, with the possible exception of BB will be shipping HR20's before 9/13.
Please don't blame me or think there is any truth in another members bashing my company or me. I have always prided myself on honesty and delivering the highest level of customer service and support. I am here to help this forum and its members. I enjoy providing technical and dealer insight to DBSTalk and its members.

Hi, any chance value electronics might ship a day or so before the 13th? Also, I see you still are accepting preoders....do you have enough in stock in to ship all the preorders next week?

Looks as if BeachAudio.com has the HR20 back up on their website @ the $299 price. Also, they note that shipping will not start until 9/13/06.

Time will tell, but I don't think that getting your HR20 on the 13/14th from Best Buy constitutes an "exclusive". I have yet to see one post that anyone has received one from Best Buy yet.
Hello - the Best Buy website lists that the HR20 is available now for in store pick up at the store in Germantown, MD (search on zip code 20180). For now, I'm going to hold off until the hubbub dies down. Been this long without DVR, so I think I can wait a bit longer to secure a deal. The 'Skins will be on ESPN HD this Monday, so at least I'm set for this weekend.

I just received this e-mail from Beachaudio:
Dear Customer,
After inquiring this morning with our distributor about a confirmed ship
date for the HR20 unit, a representative from DirecTV contacted us
advising us on the current ship status of the HR20's we have in stock.
Rather than giving us the green light on shipping the units for their
arrival on the previously scheduled release date of Sept.13th, we were
advised of a significant software upgrade issue that has been widely
reported in the units from the first production run of the HR20's.
Because so many of the units currently in service are affected by this
issue, DirecTV has ordered a recall of all the current HR20 units
nationwide that still remain un-purchased by consumers to avoid the
overwhelming need for installation technicians to make in home visits to
replace the faulty units due to the significant software issue which
exists in them.
While this is clearly not good news for you, the waiting customer,
please understand this recall is on the order of DirecTV & is an effort
to avoid thousands of angry customers who would inevitably receive a
defective unit if the pieces currently in stock were to ship as planned,
or if purchased exclusively through local retailers. We have been
advised that all current units nationwide are affected with this glitch
& will have to be replaced for proper operation.
DirecTV has given us a new tentative release time frame of the first
week in October for the new units to be arriving at our warehouses &
ready to ship. This is only an estimate & has not been confirmed as a
guaranteed arrival date. Once we have a confirmed date for these units,
we will email you to advise of the release.
Please contact us at Beach Audio if you wish to cancel your order, or if
you would like to keep your current order on back-order status & await
the arrival of the new units. **Orders that have been placed via
Amazon.com are subject to a 30 day expiration time frame. Please contact
us if your order may be in danger of expiring & you wish to keep your
backorder in good standing.**
As information regarding this issue is given to us, we will keep
customers with current back orders advised via email immediately. If you
have any further questions or concerns, or if you wish to cancel your
order at any time, please feel free to email or call our offices during
regular business hours, Mon-Fri, 9am-5pm PST, at the number below.
We sincerely apologize for this delay & appreciate your understanding in
the matter.

This is bunk from BA. I received the "backorder" email. They are getting a little shady.
Got the same e-mail checked other treads & see nothing about a recall & people are getting them installed by D* I think they realize they under priced them & are now trying to get out of the deal. If I don't get this I will never do business with them & will do my best to let it be known to all
BeachAudio has pulled the HR20 from its web site again; I have sent a few emails to them today and no response. Went to BestBuy today and found a full pallet of them, Now I have one, just need the dish, install set for Friday. Now for a letter to the Better Business Bureau…

Maybe we do indeed need to mount a campaign to the Better Business Bureau regarding BeachAudio! Not only have they raised the price twice in a short time, now they tell everyone that they won't be shipped till early October.
They seem to be lying through their teeth. I just got off the phone with a BeachAudio rep and he says they were told by a distributer and by DirecTv that there is a recall on this unit as described in their email and "that is all the information we have at this time." What about Best Buy and Value Electronics who are distributing hundreds or thousands of these units and they know nothing of this supposed "recall" Something stinks bad here. I just ordered from VE and hopefully it gets shipped today.
I think this is it...
Dear Beach Audio customer,
It is with regret that we must cancel your current order for the DirecTV HR-20. There is an easy way to file a complaint. Go to beachaudio.com and click on their Better Business Bureau icon
Then click on BBB Report on Company- which gives the info on beachaudio
and fills in all company data when you click on File Complaint.
Take a few minutes and let your voice be heard.

I received the stock email for one unit from Beach Audio listed above, and for a
second I recevied a full "Cancelled, sorry". I place my order when this thread was only 1 message long. Something smells funny. 600? WOW $20 on more out of
stock equipment. My other order is in status "BACKORDERED". I suspect I will get the cancel tomorrow. TIme to find another company. BTW, Beachaudio.com has a direct relationship with BUYDIG.com. in Edison, NJ. They don't ship Saturdays, and close early Fridays, and the Buydig.com site says they are not affiliated with any other sites. (Yet the address is identical). Uh.. May want to avoid this company.

I just checked out the Beach Audio site again and notice that they have now removed all D* recievers from their site they still had the D10, D11, and R15's and I think H20 on their site as of yesterday afternoon but now they have no Directv recievers listed at all.
I wonder if D* may have pulled rank on them because of their business practices and informed them they are not allowed to sell any D* boxes anymore?

Just got the rebuttal from BeachAudio through the Better Business Bureau complaint I filed:
"Company’s Response To Your Dispute:
The customers card was never charged and a $20 credit off the customers next order was offered as a courtesy. We are no longer stocking these units."
I sent back a rebuttal also, asking that BeachAudio admit their error and that they lied to their customers about a fake DirecTv recall and that they should apologize. And BBB should remove their good standing.
The BBB has only received 6 complaints. If you guys want to make a difference you need to register your complaints with BBB at the above links.
How many othere have submitted comments to BizRate about this incident? I wrote something up, responded to all the e-mails from BizRate and nothing has shown up in the comments section about this from anyone. It does show 50% negative rating over the past week though.

I got a rebuttal response through the BBB from Beachaudio.
Beachaudio responded:
"We forwarded the information we were told by our supplier of DirecTV. Unfortunately, that information was incorrect and we have tried to make it up by offering a future credit off next order."
At least they finally admitted that the information was incorrect. Still don't think we are getting the whole story. It will permanently damage their credibility with a lot of folks on this forum and elsewhere.

Yea, it's also a bit strange that BeachAudio no longer shows any D* receivers on their web site. The entire thing stinks.

WOW, I knew that $249 offer was too good to be true.
I bet BestBuy raised a stink with Directv since they wanted to be the "exlusive" HR20 retailer. To be undercut by a small shop on price, and lose exclusivity was too much to them they used their power to influence Directv to pull Beach Audio's Authorized Directv Reseller status. Knowing what a shady company BestBuy is I am not surprised.

BeachAudio lost their D* dealer status by sending out some emails saying that the HR20 had been recalled (completely false) and that the recall was the reason they couldn't deliver the HR20s to the customers that had already ordered them. I doubt a monsterous company like BB cares about the actions of a small online retailer like BeachAudio.
