View Full Version : Confused as hell...

I can't seem to get a straight answer to my question and the more people i talk to at Dish Network about this, the more confused i get.
Any help with the following issue is greatly appreciated...
I ordered a DVR-625 receiver to replace my old receiver. My friend said that i could watch one show and record another show at the same time using only one tv (kind of like Tivo). However, I have now been told that, that is not accurate. That in fact the only way you can watch a show and record another show at the same time is by connecting the receiver to two separate televisions.
Is that true?
Assuming that is true and i have to have two TV's, can i just take a little tv throw it in behind my big tv and make the little one my second tv? I was thinking about doing that and just never turning the little TV on rather i would just use it to create the link but i would control and watch everything from the main TV.
Is that possible?
and last but not least..
Can i use just one remote control (in this case the main one) to control what is to be recorded on tv #2 or do i have to use remore #2 for that purpose as well. Also, can i use remote #1 to record something to TV #2 but then watch it on TV #1?
Like i said, any help is greatly appreciated.

The 625 can in fact record one channel while you view another channel using one TV using one remote called Single Mode. However, the 625 has an additional feature that allows seperate, independent viewing on a 2nd TV called Dual Mode. You push a button to switch between modes.
It seems that the confusion is not regarding the capabilities of the 625, but in exactly what the details are of your installation. Please provide as much detail regarding your planned install and how many TV's and how many and which boxes. If the 625 will be installed to serve two different people in two different rooms for independant viewing, then you may not always have the TV2 tuner available to record while you watch another channel. These details are important because it is best to make all arrangments regarding what you want from the technology by installation time because it will cost a lot more money to fix it later.
More info please.

You should be able to watch and record on a 625 and one TV. I don't have one in front of me or I could be more precise in the answer, but you should be able to put the receiver into single mode or use recording preferences to make TV2 your preferred place for recording events. That frees up the tuner on TV1 for another live channel.
All done from the TV1 remote - without making your tv rack look like mission control. :)

Idealy, i just want to connect the receiver to one single television and be able to watch something while recording something else and it looks to me as if you are saying that in fact, such a scenario is possible through "single mode".
If in fact that is true, Dish seriously needs to rethink their hiring policies. I called no less than 5 times trying to figure this out and every single time, the rep's would tell me that it is not possible unless i was willing to connect the receiver to 2 tv's.
Unbelievable...

Well it looks like that settles it then.
If i use "single mode", i can watch one show while recording another on the same television.

Unfortunately, it seems like the average CSR is about as knowledgable of the product as the salespeople at Best Buy. It is a shame, but it is very hard to find folks who won't just make up answers to get you to stop asking.
I never know if it is apathy on the part of employees, lack of training/care by the companies, or a combination of both (which is what I really suspect).

Hold the phone!
I only use one TV. I never watch live TV, I record anything that might be interesting.
I regularly watch a recorded event, and record two shows at the same time--only have to use one remote.
Watch live TV (one tuner), and record a show at the same time (second tuner), easy.
Record Letterman and Leno at the same time, easy.

It's better than at. With the 625...You can record on # 2...you can record on # 1 at the same time AND you can watch a Previously recorded event at the same time as recording on both 1 & 2. All with one TV.
It's a beautiful thing

Unfortunately, it seems like the average CSR is about as knowledgable of the product as the salespeople at Best Buy.Speaking of... I was told that Blue-Ray is better because it can output 1080p while HD-DVD was limited to 720p. :nono2: And this was from someone in the Magnolia section. Good thing he was wearing a button-down shirt and tie to make him look more "professional." :sure:  It's better than at. With the 625...You can record on # 2...you can record on # 1 at the same time AND you can watch a Previously recorded event at the same time as recording on both 1 & 2.That's how I interpreted rk's post.

duffy75, I am very sure that you can watch one channel and record another when in single mode which is controled by the mode button on the front panel. I just installed a 625 two weeks ago. I did not test that specific function though I am sure you can do it. Here is the url for the manual on the dish web site. You will be able to read the manual and see for yourself.

Hope this helps
