I just called retention, and the guy told me that DirecTV is not yet installing the HR20 in Michigan. He told me that I could order it through bestbuy.com and pay $400, and then DirecTV would credit me back $200. I passed on that offer, because once DirecTV can give it to me directly I'll probably be able to get it for $21.95. I can wait a couple more weeks when it means saving $200. :)
Detroit was the very first market to get MPEG4 locals, but now we're lagging behind on the HR20 rollout. :(

Called again today, and the story hasn't changed. This is starting to get old...

Sure it's available. Order from Value Electronics, it'll ship tomorrow most likely and when you get it you call up DirecTV for an install should you need it. Could also pick it up at Best Buy and do the same for install.

That's how much DirecTV will give it to me for, when it's available in my area.
I dont understand why you cant get it. I live in a small town and dont even have hd locals, let alone mpeg-4. I called D* yesterday and I got it for 19.95, it will be installed tomorrow morning. The installer doesn't have any 10-250's, all HR-20's. I would try again. Call retention again.

That was my fourth call, and every single CSR gave the same response after checking the system. For some reason, the local installer just doesn't have any HR20s to install.
It was retention that I spoke with, and all of the CSRs seemed to know what they were talking about.

The HR20 isn't even hitting a national release until tomorrow. Probably be another month until there are enough in the pipe for DirecTV to be able to offer it themselves and the installers across the country to have them in stock.
So if you want $21.95 price then waiting another month or two is the price you'll pay. If DirecTV is willing to give it to you for $21.95 then simply get them to give you program credits after you get a unit from Best Buy or VE and activate it. You don't need to get it directly from them to get a deal.

I've lived this long without an HD DVR, and I'm willing to wait a little longer in order to take the path of least resistance.

HR20's are now available in Michigan, at least the Detroit area. My installation is scheduled for next Wednesday.

I picked mine up from Best Buy today, and got a $200 credit from DirecTV. Not quite as cheap as I was hoping, but I'm alright with it.

Pickred mine up from best buy in troy a couple days ago, I havent installed it yet. But how did you get D* to give you a 200.00 credit. before or after you bought it.

I called retention before I bought it, and they told me that they'd give me a $200 credit once it's activated. Also, make sure you ask for the HD Pack free for 4 months when you call to activate the receiver.

Yeah. The most annoying bugs for me are the Dolby Digital problems. It's so bad that I just shut off Dolby Digital. I'll turn it back on once they send down the next software update.

Let us know if that fixes the problem. Others had to switch channels and then back to the dd channel. other then that hows everything else like it
do you have the hr10-250 if so hows it compare

Disabling Dolby Digital does fix the problem, but obviously it shuts off Dolby Digital. It's a tradeoff, but I'm willing to give up surround sound for a few weeks in order to keep the family sane.
I did not have the HR10, so I can't make any comparisons.
