Since more people have the HR20, do trust it to record all your shows with no problems (i.e. miss a show do to corrupt record, audio not fully recorded, etc...). My wife will kill me if the new DVR missed some of are shows we watch, especially with the fall season of shows starting. I would not want to miss a episode of Prison Break.

Also heard people had problems recording long shows, like 3 hours or more and then having problems playing them back after you hit the 3 hour mark. Would hate to record a football game and miss the final quarter.

So the should I get the HR20, or hold on to the hr-10 until like x-mas time, of course I will have to worry about snow or ice delaying an install around that time of the year. I live in the NYC area so I get the national HD locals, and the main thing I want the hr20 for his RSN HDs and the interactive Sunday ticket stuff.

Thanks for any and all responses.

After one week with my new HR20 DVR I've only had one recording get messed up .... Thursday's "Big Brother". It showed up in "My VOD List", but when trying to play it the recording just froze. When I reset my receiver it was gone from the "My VOD List". Fortunately I had a backup recording on my trusty HR10-250 DVR.

Not sure why this recording was messed up. The HR20 has gotten probably 50 recordings perfect so far this past week.

I haven't had the HR20 miss any of the recordings I have scheduled for it thus far, except for one instance earlier this week in which a recorded show failed to play. I believe this happened to other HR20 owners and it may have had something to do with a software update occuring about the same time.

As for lengthy recordings, I failed to record the last quarter of the Arkansas/USC game. However, it wasn't until after I had set up the recording and left the house for the evening that I realized that I didn't set up an "overrun" buffer for the game, which the HR20 allows you to do. You can tell the HR20 to keep recording past the end time of the program so that you don't lose programming that extends farther than that shown in the program guide. I won't make that mistake again....

Yes, overall I'm liking the HR20 DVR. And I consider myself a "Tivo diehard", so I was predisposed to hate the HR20. It has it's advantages though compared to the HR10-250 HD DVR (documented elsewhere in this forum).

The HD picture is great. It's actually slightly better than my HR10-250, at least comparing MPEG2 HD channels. Also, DirecTV's MPEG4 HD Local channels look just as good the HR10-250's local OTA HD channels. We can't compare the HR20 OTA channels yet because its ATSC HDTV tuners are not yet active (coming in October).

So, if I'm already receiving my locals through DTV will I be receiving MPEG4 HD from DTV with the HR20? I'm in NY.

Yes. In the the NY DMA, they're giving the big 4 nets in mpeg-4 (and still mpeg-2 for that matter), as well as YES HD, channel 96 (mpeg-4 but usually simulcast on channel 95 in mpeg-2 for MLB EI subs also) and SNY HD in mpeg-4 on channel 97.

So, are you saying that YES is always viewable on chan 96 in HD as well as 622 and sometimes 95?

That is true if YES is doing HD for that particular game. They used to just do HD for home games but they substantially increased their road HD telecasts this season.

Cool....I can't wait to get the HR20 now.

Thanks

Any word on MSG HD for the fall hockey and basketball season (Rangers/Knicks)??

Thanks ....

Overall, I too can recommed the HR20. This is my first DVR and it hasn't disappointed me.

I had only two brief technical problems with the unit, but they have resolved themselves (non play of a recorded program and unit lock up on a channel change corrected through a system re-set).

The user interface is pretty easy for a newbie like me and it didn't take me long to learn how to set up and schedule recordings. I like starting to watch a program 5 or 10 minutes after it starts, rewinding to the beginning, and then skipping all commercials to the end. That ALONE for me makes the investment worth it.

One minor drawback from my old receiver. There is no channel readout on the front panel of the HR20. I've got it tuned in to an XM music channel right now, but you wouldn't be able to tell what XM channel I'm on just by looking at the unit. Oh well......

That's good news, Mike. Just in time for NY Ranger Hockey!

Yeah, I'm looking forward to some Knicks HD, myself. Hopefully they can be competitive again.

Same thing happened to me with a show earlier in the week. Hopefully, they will fix this bug in the next week before the fall season. I'm not confident in the HR20 yet.
