I was going to switch to Dish, but decided to wait for the HR20 to see what its like. Anyone have experience with both? If so, which do you like better?

Anyone tried both the HR20 and Dish 622? I saw the reviews at CNET, but would like to hear from someone who's experienced both. I've been with D* for some time, and currently have two SD DTIVOs.

From what I can glean from the boards for the HR20 and Dish 622, both have had teething pains to one degree or another. The only essential difference of the DVR capabilities I'm aware of is the 622's ability to take an antenna in from an HD antenna to allow recording of "over the air" HD transmissions from your local HD stations AND a true 30-second skip (as opposed to slip). Anyone have a comparision between the two?

The HR20 will have this before the end of the year.
AND a true 30-second skip (as opposed to slip).
The HR20 will never have this.

I have used both D* and E*

DISH hardware was MUCH more reliable.. never a problem or missed recording.. and great search and 'Dishpass' features and very high limits for search history, number of things to do etc.

BUT... I still like D* better, the boxes (when they work right) have more options for a geek like me and more useful features and better picture quality. AND when OTA is enabled... and the recent FF bugs fixed.. D* will be really great!!

But don't me started on my wifes R15! :( :( If you plan going the SD route only.. get DISH. No questions asked.

No, I'll be staying with my DTIVOs as long as I'm still using SD. Barring hardware failure, I'd never go to the R15 as it exists today. I'm still a little bit away from committing the $$ to HD, so maybe D* can get the OTA on the HR20 going.

Have you seen the HR20 and VIP622 HD outputs? Or were you refering to SD Dish and D* picture quality?

Overall both SD and HD seems better (to me) for even the R15 and the Hr20... vs all dish units.

Do you mean picture quality? This brings up a point... I know I am going to get yelled at for this. But why stay with D*? I have been a D* customer for years. Never really checked out anything else (cable was crap) and I was a TiVo snob.

However the HR20 has been better than expected (I have not switched to the 5LNB dish yet). I even like it better than my TiVo (series 2 not series 1).

However it looks like Dish has more HD content. They seem to have a better HD DVR 622 (30 second skip/can record 3 shows at once). Also, seems like Dish has better pricing.

From what I have seen these are the reasons to stay:
1). better HD content in the future.
2). The HR20 seems to have better PQ.
3). I can get better pricing by calling CR.

I guess I am having a "doubting" moment...

Ive been with D* for 5 years and Im right there with you. My father recently switched from sd D* to the HD E* and he loves E*. Granted he doesnt have a dvr but still the hd content is hard to beat.

Im lucky right now though since D* is out of the Hr-20 anyway I have time to think about it.

I would hold off on making any decision until the middle of next year. Let DirecTV get it's satellites up and start pumping down all it's HD content. Then see. Don't forget. Other than broadcast networks and specialty channels there are still maybe 10 national HD channels. DirecTV simply decided to put everything into getting HD locals out first. Dish went for nationals. Kinda makes sense to get as many HD DMAs online DURING the fall/winter TV season as possible and then do national channels in the summer..

I won't be moving on HD until at least then anyway. But I suspect eventually both D* and E* will have a similar number of HD offerings. Since I live in the LA area, I'm sure my locals are available in HD anyway. But given I can get them OTA, I'm very interested in having that capability in the HR20. Will the HR20 be able to record from all three sources (two satellite, one OTA antenna) simultaneously?

I have 3 R15's and NEVER had a problem. Records everything it is set for and the picture is SWEET. Better than the DTivo I have the R10's and an HDVR2 and the R15's picture is far better.

No ....two sources maximum at one time:

2 OTA
1 OTA, 1 Sat
2 Sat

Forget the fact it says something else in the manual...the manual is wrong.

I thought that once OTA is enabled, one could record 2-sat and one OTA, all at the same time? Is this not correct? And how can it ever record 2-OTA at once, doesn't it only have one OTA tuner?

Doesn't matter to me because I'll never use the OTA, just wondering what is correct.

Also, my two R15 SD-DVRs have been nearly perfect.

The ViP622 has only one OTA tuner, but the HR20 has two.

The big advantage for new E* subs is that they can often buy their way out of a contract while new or upgrading D* subs are looking at 24 months under most circumstances.

The argument that baffles me is that if you want HD, go HR20 even though you can't get a lot of HD with it yet. If you want HD today, E* would appear to be the choice. Waiting for this feature to be turned on and those satellites to be launched may be good sport, but it isn't going to get you lots of HD content today (or even in time for the holidays).

Content-wise, E* is the way to go. Way more HD is available. The 622 is very reliable (have not had a problem with it yet). Picture quality is great on my LCD. 2nd TV accesses my recordings from my living room into my bedroom. Price is better than DirecTV... DISH wins this one. I have had both DirecTV and DISH. DISH's offerings are much better.

Almost sold on E*... the only thing is the hard drive size. On the 622 can you increase the hard drive size? That is a huge advantage for the HR20...

Have to agree that this is a big issue for me as well. With my currrent SD DTIVOs, I've swapped out both disks for larger ones. I know the HR20 can use an external SATA drive instead of the provided internal one. As I understand it, the VIP622 can't do this yet.

On 622 Hard Drive Space Increase:
There is a function planned to be able to use a harddrive with the USB port. The specifics haven't been released on it yet though.

The VIP 622 sucks in my opinion. Either that or the pic quality from E* totally Sucks but I see the Same issues on OTA so I think it is the box. I am much happier with the pic quality of the HR20. YMMV! Now if they would take care of this FF crap.

GeoffQ,

so you have used both? What exactly sucks on the 622? I have heard just the opposite that the 622 has better PQ...

The concern I have with this is the limited bandwidth they will get with USB vs. SATA... Maybe if it's used just for archival, they can get away with it.
