View Full Version : Increase Ram?

Would it be possible to increase the amount of RAM in the HR20? Also, would there be a noticeable improvement in performance? Granted, this is a leased unit. So, maybe not the best idea.

I'm guessing the RAM is soldered on, so I definitely won't try it! I'm sure there's at least 1 person here crazy enough to attempt it though.

From what I've heard about the performance of this unit, there is nothing to indicate that the amount of RAM it has is holding it back in any way. So an upgrade would not only be extremely difficult, but also pointless.

I am not impressed with the speed of the guides. It is tolerable, but definately not blazing by any means. If replacing the memory is anything more than pulling old ram up, and sliding new ram on the board, I'm out.

Adding more RAM would not speed up the guides.

Adding RAM would only speed things up if RAM got full and hard disk space was being used as virtual memory. I don't know that the box is set up like that.

I highly doubt that it is, because the box is very tightly locked down and DirecTV knows exactly what is running on it. So they gave it enough RAM to handle what it needs to do, and that's that.

You don't know the type of business - if they would cut a cost of the DVR for just $5 by substitute 64 MB of RAM to swap file on disk - they ALREADY did that ! :)

OK guys, IF you could increase RAM it would only be of any use if the code was designed to look for available ram and use it. I'm 99% sure DTV hasn't done that. They know how much RAM is on the unit and they code to fit that amount. Throw in 2GB of RAM and it's still only gonna use what it was designed for. Plus, without knowing the processor you have no idea how much could be added.
So, how much RAM does it currently have? How much Flash? How much EEPROM? Anyone performed a chip inventory on a HR20 yet? Until that happens, discussions such as this are moot.
