View Full Version : Concerning mpeg-4 locals in Cleveland
Why is it that ch.'s 3(nbc) and 19(cbs) looks so bad but ch.'s 5(abc) and 8(fox) look pretty darn good.Right now ch.19 is pixilating and stuttering like mad. This might be a problem at D's end but why 2 good channels and 2 bad ones?

Same thing in Boston...if I'm not mistaken ABC and FOX are 780p while NBC, CBS and Boston's RSN (NESN) are 1080i. All the MPEG4 1080i stations are not up to par (to be kind)

I have had the HD locals since early July and that is just how they are at this point. I had several tech's out because DTV makes you think it is your equipment. But, after you have read the postings on this forum you find out it is MPEG4 issues. There is supposed to be an update soon. You can call and complain and they'll give you some freebie's. I just had installed an HR20 yesterday for $19.95 and the picture is the same on 3 & 19. It hopefully will get better. I want to watch the Browns on 19!

It's too bad there are such problems with MPEG-4, but I'm sure there's an update coming. I'm also in the Cleveland area.
I'm still evaluating whether I should upgrade my HR10-250 and Samsung SIR-TS160 HD devices. I get all the local channels other than PBS :( OTA. The HR10-250 has difficulty resolving channel 3's HD signal no matter what antenna I use, which is the only thing causing me to continue consideration of the new units despite my being upset about having to wheedle and cajole deals out of CSRs instead of D* having a consistent upgrade policy.
BTW, which installer did you guys use for your AT9 dishes in Cleveland?

I wasn't aware that CBS (19) was available in Cleveland in HD. I know I haven't had it. Although, when flipping around the football games CBS was in HD for a couple minutes. I flipped away and it was SD when I returned. That prompted me to come here and check...
How long have you been getting the HD 19?

for those of you with HR20's in cleveland, ABC has a problem when you record/get in the buffer with the HR20, it cause very bad playback. I just wanted to let you know I spoke to the ABC tech and they are aware of the problem, the encoders they use (I forget the brand) need a firmware update, the only problem is, he dosent know when they are going to get that update, so it could be awhile.. in the mean time, ABC HD records are horrible, and unwatchable! make sure you call, I am positive the more people call and complain the faster they will get it done, remember they need viewers too!

I thought that the local HD problems were the handoff from the locals to D* transmision facilities and D* were updating these?

it was the Head engineer who I talked to, and he said they have it narrowed down to Their (meaning WEWS) trandberg (is that right spelling) encoders needed a firmware update, so it might not always fall on Directvs shoulders

and I might believe it if it wasn't happening in all of the 1080i stations in many cities ...

Okay READ before you post, This is abc a 720p station, the problem is everything looks flawless live, but when you record it starts stuttering and flipping out, this has nothing to do with 1080i.

Thanks for the info stuart. It was this terrible playback that pushed me over the edge with the HR20. I blamed it on the DVR and returned it to BB.
Hmmm... Has me thinking that maybe I should give the HR20 another chance.

Yeah Head engineer said he was made aware of it this week (probably monday when I called!) and thats what they tracked it down to, also remember this is still new mpeg4, and they are working on upgrading things fast, I am very happy with what I have seen so far!

Problems with Channel 3 seem to have been solved there still seems to be a problem with Channel 19 though. Its getting close to being perfect.

I thought channel 3 looked good last night. I didn't if it was the national broadcast of the NFL game or what. It looked as good as NBC in 1080i can look.
It will be nice if 19 is fixed soon. Hopefully, FSN will be ok for the Cavs!

Agreed and I checked this morning with the Morning News on 3 in HD it was the same, smooth broadcast the way it should be. Hopefully a fix for 19 is coming soon. FSN Ohio SHOULD be ok as thats broadcast at 720p.

I caught a little of the Columbus Blue Jackets on Ohio FSN on 95 tonight. It looked great so the Cavs should be fine.
