Okay, I've been with Dish for 2 years, I have standard definition DVR... I just got a new HD set and want the HD DVR.... This is my first HD experience... What's the cheapest way to do this?

Dish has a good offer on the 622, you can also buy a used 942 pretty cheap. Before you do any of the above try your local OTA HD channels if you are in range, that will give you a good calibration of the best pix you can expect. The stuff from Dish is more compressed.

What's the deal on the 622? and is it dual tuner?

David,
The VIP622 is indeed a Dual Tuner DVR. The 622 also has a ATSC tuner for your Local OTA HD channels. The 622 only has ONE OTA TUNER so you can only record or tune to ONE OTA channel at a time. If Dish has your Local HD channels then you can record more than one Local HD channel at a time.
With the 622 you can record TWO HD channels as well as one Local OTA HD channel at the same time as you playback another prerecorded events on up to two TV's. The 622 can only output HD to ONE TV, although the 622 can playback a HD event to TV2 when in dual Mode but the HD playback on TV2 is downrezzed to 480i.
Lastly in Dual Mode you can NOT view any Live OTA signals on TV2.
You might want to reconsider purchasing a 942 as Dish will NOT allow ANY new HD subscribers to get an HD package without a VIP HD receiver, if you want anything other than OTA HD.
Dish does have a HD upgrade offer for current subs; $199 for the Vip622 upgrade and includes any needed hardware and installation for the upgrade price. There is a rebate of $100 for Current NON HD Dish Subs that upgrade to a HD metal package, the rebate is $10 per month for 10 months. Lastly the Upgrade requires a commitment of 18 months, and the Upgrade is a Lease that requires a lease fee for the 622.

David, see the 622 (http://ekb.dbstalk.com/622.htm) page on the EKB for links to more info. If your standard DVR is a 522/625, you're already familiar with the operation. If you're coming from a 501/8/10, or even a 7x00 or 721, you'll have some big upgrades to enjoy.

Will they give me any credit for my 522?
Will they give me any credit for my 522?
David,
If you are leasing then you will get a portion of the lease fee back as you are billed and Pay for the Month ahead.
If you own the receiver, as in you Purchased it, then you can get a credit but it will be for a VERY SMALL AMOUNT. You would be better off selling it on Ebay, that is IF YOU OWN the receiver.

You either bought it or you are leasing it... there is none of this "you own it after a year" business.
Check with Dish and double check your contract - Dish could be wrong (high probability). If you pay a lease fee it not yours - EVER.

If you do the "upgrade" you get a 622 for 199 why are they telling you 499? It is still on the website that this is what it cost for 1 HDTV. It dosesn't say anything about being only for new subs. That is what seems to be the going lease price for the set up. Then you could sell the 522 on ebay.

I thought the same thing too, the lady told me that deal didn't exist and there were no longer lease options even after my persistance.
The upgrade was listed on tonight's Charlie Chat. Call back till you get a knowledgable CSR.

tell them they need to watch the Charlie Chat :) haha
try again in the morning, and ask for a supervisor this time. If they are still having issues, point out it was discussed on the Charlie Chat, find it on the website if it's stil there, and make them get off their lazy duffs and find it :)

Isn't great how many Hoops a person has to Jump thru to get an Upgrade, etc ? Dishnetwork is becoming a Big Joke!! A person should be able to have something taken care of ,on the FIRST Phone call !:nono: :nono2:
When I called about upgrading to HD, the phone rep actually told me about the $199 deal before we even got started. Keep calling and talk to someone else.

You might want to double check phone number you are calling. I heard Direct has 888-333-3474. Dish is 800-333-3474. Or you may have used your upgrade and have to wait, except also heard Dish is not selling 622 so don't know why they would be quoting the sale price.
