View Full Version : HR20 and pay-per view recording problem

I purchased the HR20 last week and everything has been working fine except one thing. I can't record pay-per view movies. I can purchase them and watch them live without a problem. I can rewind, pause, and fast foward through the whole movie while it is recording if I am on the channel that the movie is on while it is recording. The orange light is on indicating that it is recording the program. My problem is when I go to my list of recordings and choose the pay-per view movie the screen is just black with no audio or video. Sometimes I can fast foward through it and sometimes it just sits at zero minutes but regardless the screen is black with no audio. I have absolutely no problems with recording anything else. Only pay-per view movies. I have had this happen with V for Vendetta and The Benchwarmers. The first time I didn't think much about it but the second time I called DTV about it. They said it was the first time they had heard of this problem and since the receivers were so new their only suggestion was to completely reset the system. I did that and it did not fix the problem. They also said this had been a problem on their first non HD DVD DVRS (not sure of the model number) and it had to be fixed by a software update. I guess my real question is has anyone else had this problem or is it an isolated incident with my receiver. Thanks in advance for any feedback.

Hmm....

I haven't had that particular problem.
Try RECORDING it first, completely.... (but don't "buy" it yet)

Then buy it when you try to watch it... (that is the method I have been using).

There is a new software update comming soon, so hold on for at least a week before trying to format the entire system or anything like that.

Thanks for the quick reply. I didn't know you could record it before you purchased it. I will try that next time if I buy another pay-per view movie before the next software update. Not the biggest issue in the world to me but just something I noticed. I don't have my receiver hooked up to a phone line so I have to order pay-per view on the internet. Not sure if that matters at all. I figured it was a software issue so I will wait. I actually reformated it yesterday but I only had a few programs recorded so it was not a big deal.

I LOVE... the record, then buy feature.

It is great, as I can que up a bunch on their over night replays, and just have them there.... Kinda like renting a movie and keeping it for a month.

Do note, that they will "delete" if you don't pay for them by a certain date (usually a few months down the road)

I tried setting this up, but when I would select a PPV movie it seemed that my only option was to buy. Do you need to select the movie from the guide and then hit the record button?

I have only tried it via the Guide.

Same problem here.

I ordered a PPV online and watched it on the HR20 last night (9/23 - UFC 63). I pressed the record button after it started, and recording light came on on the front panel. The advanced csr said to do it this way so I could watch it on any receiver in the house. She said if I just recorded the ppv from the guide on the hr20, then I'd have to pay the first time I watched it (which is fine), but I couldn't see it on any other receivers in the house).

I set a manual record for the ppv on my HR10 for the event, and it recorded/plays fine.

So I have the PPV in my VOD list on the HR20, but when I play it, I just get a black screen (not even an option to buy it). Any ideas? Am I doing something wrong?

So this begs a question. I haven't seen any way to do a manual record for the HR20. So if I want to get a PPV online and record it on the HR20 (without having to pay for it a second time with the buy-it-the-first-time-you-watch-it method), how can I do that?

I'm still have yet to try this. Had it record The World's Fastest Indian yesterday, but I'm too cheap to buy and watch it, haha. Maybe when the PPV actually has a movie I really really want to watch I'll try this feature out.

I recorded UFC 63 last night on my HR20. I wasn't home but I just got done watching it and it played fine. The way I did it was to buy it via the guide. Then I used the guide to select it and hit record. Worked great.

Order it online, and then just record it via the guide.

Add my data point. I did order online and set up recordings on my HR20 and HR10. The HR20 began recording it and there was picture and sound when I went to bed. When I got up, black screen with the play marker stuck at zero. It would act like it was FFing or RWing, but would never move from zero. The progress bar was full and it reported a 3 hour recording.

Hope they work this out. I don't do a lot of PPV, but probably about $500/year when you include the fights.

Last night i ordered a movie online and recorded on my HR20. I watched 5 minutes of it while it and it seemed to be recording fine, then I went to bed. Today I tried to watch the recording and i am having the black screen, as described above in the posts.

Should I reset my machine? Will that fix it, so i can watch this movie?

Will Direct TV give me a refund?

I guess I wish I would have seen this forum before I ordered the movie and I wouldn't be going through this now!

You can try a reset to see if you can then watch it.

If it doesn't, call DirecTV and they should credit you for the program.

When you said "... I go to my list of recordings", did you mean while recording the PPV movie, or after you've recorded it?

I had the same probelm. I recorded UFC 65 last night. FF and RW worked fine while I was watchign it, but this morning when I tried to watch it, there was only a black screen and it looked like it was stuck... Anyone else still having this problem?

Thanks,
Andrew

I have the same problem last night/today. I ordered the TNA PPV last night online. Then I set it to record and even record all the replays just in case I experienced a problem. I can still watch the replay now, in fact, but I cannot see any of the recordings of the TNA PPV from last night (including the one being recorded right now). I cancelled the recording of the current replay and set the next replay to record with no extra time added (just a simple guide then R-button record). I'm worried that if this doesn't record, I'm out of replays and I didn't get to see it.

The plan was to watch this tomorrow night if anyone is curious about why I haven't just watched it "live" already.

Ooops, damn. :) Didn't mean to post in this old topic. Was researching the issue and made my reply in the wrong topic by mistake!

That's fine. This issue definitely still exists, I was bitten by it recently. It's good to make sure that DirecTV is still aware of it.
