View Full Version : Screen Saver????
The HR20 is on channel 70 -- HBOHD -- I go away for a while and when I come back I have a screen-saver!!! It's a DirecTV logo bouncing diagonally off the edges of the screen like a pool ball. If I use a remote button it goes right back to the channel 70 picture -- how do I disable this useless "feature"??? And I still have that equally useless message about the other tuner (that I can't control) having no signal. . .

That "uselesss" feature is trigger because of the lack of activity on the remote.
How long is a "while"? And did you pause it before you left?
If you paused it, that is what is triggering the screen saver.
If it was left in normally play, it could be triggered by the lack of signal on the 2nd tuner.
Are you having rain issues (lack of signal issues), or do you not have a cable plugged into #2?

It turned on again while I was sitting here -- maybe 5 minutes passed from last use of the remote. I didn't use pause at all. Why should what the OTHER tuner is doing affect the foreground screen?
Yes, we have had heavy rain all night and continuing still. The no signal message has "771" in parenthesis -- is that the channel it is trying to receive? That would be sports -- I have NO sports subscriptions.
an easter egg to disable this would be great. I'm tired of the screen saver popping on WHILE watching something recorded. (0xcc)

a persistent popup dialog (like "771 searching for signal") could cause burn-in. maybe that's why the screensaver kicked in.

I just saw this screen saver yesterday for the first time, and I love it!!! I have a household of women that like to pause a now-playing show and walk away for hours. This way, no plasma burn-in!!! I'm liking this HR20 more and more.
Is there some way to turn this *%#@ thing off?! I set a recording on my DVD recorder to dump off a show from the HR20 before I went to bed last night, and I check the DVD this morning and I have 8 minutes of program, and 1hr32m of audio with the @&%# screesaver bouncing around!!
Any way to fix this?! I have a DLP, so I am in the least worried about burn-in!!
Which brings another thought to mind.. :sure:
WHY do you need the box to go into screensaver mode when a program is playing anyway?! I can understand if the box is left in a menu or the box notes that a static display has been left on too long (like a music channel), but during a playing program, that just doesn't make any sense!!

This is just a bug. I'm sure it wasn't intentionally designed to work this way, because it's incredibly stupid.
With all of the "bugs" on this box, D* is really losing credibility here! It's to the point where it seems that "bug" is merely a description for a "feature!"
D* seriously needs to consider stopping shipment of these things until they can get all of the "features" .. oops .. "bugs" worked out!!
As I said in another thread .. D* really needs to get back to launching satellites, adding HD channels, focussing on retaining satisfied customers, and leave DVR design to the "professionals!" (like the ones in Alviso, for example!)
.. and no, I have no financial interests in TiVo! :p
So now, I can forget about dumping a 1.5 hour program to DVD while doing something else (because I can't keep it on the HD .. I don't have enough space, and I can't add a larger drive on this "leased" box like I could on the six TiVos I've bought). I have to sit in front of the TV for an hour-and-a-half and press a button every five minutes so it won't go into screensaver mode!! How ABSO-FREAKING-LUTELY ridiculous!! What a boat anchor this thing is.

Not sure if this is also related to the screensaver, but I'm hoping someone here knows the answer. Although I think having a screensaver come on when a show is paused is a great idea, specially for plasma owners, I'm not sure I understand the other reasons! I'm hoping it's just a bug.
Here's what I experienced this weekend, if I pause a show and the screensaver comes on, when I press play again it goes back to live TV instead of the paused location! Any idea? It doesn't do it if I press play before the screensaver comes on. I just did a test and it didn't do it this time! This thing is possessed!!!
This thing is possessed!!!
I think you hit the nail!
Send this thing to the Hellfire of damnation!!

DLPs and LCDs don't get burn in.

Is there something missing from this post that I don't understand (probably), but I have not seen the screen saver anywhere except on the XM channels.
I know I have watched movies that are 2 hours long (both live and recorded) without touching the remote. In fact, I leave the HR20 on all the time and when I turn on the TV, it is playing whatever is being broadcast, not the screensaver.
Does it make a difference if you use component or HDMI?

I've never seen it either... I have no idea how long it takes, but it can't be a short period, because I probably don't go an hour without hitting some button, unless I fall asleep. Again, I've never seen it.

If you pause a show for a few minutes it will come on. I've never seen it come on during playback.

The only time the screensaver will appear during playback is if there is a message on the screen. This (I assume) is a bug. Otherwise, the screensaver will only appear when the program is paused and you're not doing something else.

OK the screen saver bugs me. While this is useful for CRT and Plasma TVs it has no value for LCD or DLP sets (and it is ugly.)
It would be very nice if this could be turned off as a setup option.

I've said this before.. but the screensaver comes on WAY too fast. Go to the bathroom and it's on.. then stumble through now dark room trying to not trip over everything.
Almosts seems a bit better now after the last update?
