Big Black Box on Weather Channel

I've suddenly started getting a big black box that appears on the Weather Channel, but only when a show like "Atmospheres" is on and not regular programming. The box takes up most of the bottom half of the screen. It never appears on the other channels but once it appears on the Weather Channel, if I change stations, the box remains. It disappears when I turn the TV off (not the SAT, the TV.) If I turn it back to the Weather Channel the box returns. If I turn off the TV and then turn it back on to another channel, the box does not return. Someone on a newsgroup suggested that it had to do with closed caption. I don't remember playing with the closed caption. I can't adjust it with my UTV controller and never use the TV controller.
I don't know if the problem is with the SAT, D*, my UTV receiver or my new Toshiba TV. Any suggestions?

Check the captioning options on your TV. Most likely, you have a text screen mode on.

You can get the big black box if you have caption text (one of the 'other' modes in my caption menu) on.

On my Sharp if there is a signal it puts up a big black box over most of the screen. On other stations nothing shows up. Typically the data for these is not transmitted by DTV (to save bandwidth, hassles, etc).

Thanks for your replies. Last night, when the box came on, I used the TV remote and touched the Caption/Text button and the box immediately disappeared so I guess it was as simple as that.
